She may be innocent…but she's also deadly!

When seemingly fragile Miss Ivy Cavendale takes the headmistress position in an orphanage, it is her chance to stay anonymous in society. But not all is what it seems with Miss Ivy. When an intruder breaks in one night, she’s quick to draw her weapon, and while fear - her constant companion - has mysteriously disappeared, one thing is very she and her charges are the next target of The Devil’s Sons.

Commissioner Edward Worthington owes the head of The Queen’s Deadly Damsels a debt. So, he must keep an eye on the Duchess’s new protégé. How much trouble can the shy Miss Cavendale be? Rather a lot, actually. The diminutive wallflower has been overlooked and forgotten by society's elite, but Edward sees a woman full of fascinating contradictions he’s compelled to unravel.

Burdened by secrets and childhood trauma, Ivy is stunned as Edward ignites a breathless curiosity within her. And when he asks her to join forces to identify the dangerous intruder at The Widow’s Ball, she cannot refuse. One Liner: Not bad! Time-pass read

Miss Ivy Cavendale becomes a headmistress at an orphanage. One night, she deals with an intruder, relieved that the fear that had gripped her for years hasn’t stopped her from saving her charges. Soon, it’s clear that she and her charges are the next target of The Devil’s Sons.

Commissioner Edward Worthington owes the head of The Queen’s Deadly Damsels. So, he agrees to watch her latest ward, Ivy. It doesn’t take long to realize that he is attracted to her. But Ivy has childhood trauma, and danger surrounds them.

Can they identify the criminal and make their happy ever after?

The story comes in the third-person POVs of Ivy and Edward.

My Thoughts:

This is the fourth book in the series and works as a standalone with possible minor spoilers for the previous ones. I read the first and second, so I have an idea about the mystery/ overarching plot.

This is predominantly a romance despite the threat of an intruder and a dangerous gang lurking about. The gang hasn’t been dismantled yet, safe to say there will be more books in the series.

We met Ivy in the previous books, though I’m not sure about the Commissioner. The events related to her family occur in book #1. In book #2, there are hints about her trauma. Here, we get more information.

Though the romance is made to seem like it is not insta-love, it actually is. Still, I appreciate the attempt and the conversations that take place as Ivy learns to overcome her fears. That said, it is a spicy (4) book with open-door scenes.

The first chapter can be a hit or a miss. That’s because it clearly shows the FMC’s character – someone who has always thought of herself as weak. Her inner monologue can be a bit grating, but she proves herself with her actions.

The MMC is okay, kinda stereotypical, but he does the job. We get more than a glimpse into the Duchess’s past through him, so that’s good.

A couple of kids shine despite the limited page space. I'd be happy to meet them in the subsequent books.
The mystery is lackluster, TBH. The villains were too apparent the moment they were introduced. But then, this is not a mystery read but a romance with a touch of danger.

There is an epilogue that doesn’t really give us much except a wee bit of info about the side characters.

To summarize, A Most Unlikely Lady is a quick and easy read despite the triggers and the hints of danger. Let’s see what happens in the next book.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Guardians of Innocence

Ivy Cavendale dropped the title of “Lady” when she was forced by necessity to take the position of headmistress to an orphanage. She didn’t feel qualified to be anything else, not even a wife, as her father’s abuse ruined that for her.

One night, Ivy hears a clatter in the area where the girls sleep, opened their door to see the eldest girl fighting with a well-dressed man. When the child separated herself from the miscreant, Ivy shot him, whisked the children out the door and locked him in.

Ivy was visited by her friend, the duchess, a member of the queens deadly damsels, along with the Commissioner of Scotland Yard, who is also Duke of Worthington.

This was a mostly fast paced story filled with friendships, past pain, and budding romance, along with lots of excitement, action and adorable orphans. This was amazingly fun and often poignant, and worthy of a five star rating for this mildly spicy story.

Dark doings continue in Victorian London!

Once more we follow the antics of one of the Duchess of Dorset’s wallflowers, spies for the Queen.
Ivy Cavendale is the daughter of a scandalous Duke who committed suicide with his son and Ivy’s brother, both members of the sadistic organisation, the Devil’s Sons. Ivy is left with a small income from her father. Frugal Ivy has taken on the role of headmistress of the All Soul’s Orphanage.
Ivy, may look a slight, pale pushover. She proves she’s not. On her first night at the orphanage she confronts a man trying to kidnap one of the girls.
I loved the Ivy’s soliloquy at this moment.
“Wonderful. A girl with a poker, a boy with delusions of grandeur, and a lady quaking in her half-boots. I’m sure the three of us will strike fear into this blackguard’s heart.”
A great start to a tale that involves the unmasking of leaders of the Devil’s Sons
Then there’s the absolutely delicious Commissioner Edward Worthington, Duke of Landbourne and secret spy to Queen Victoria, who will do anything to protect Ivy.
It seems the Devil’s Sons are targeting orphanages for their prostitution rackets, both here and abroad. How to stop them?
A tense Victorian mystery, and slow burn romance.
(possible triggers for abuse victims)

This series is one of my favorites - I love historical romances that have spies as main characters! This series has heroines who secretly work for Queen Victoria as vigilantes trying to hold aristocrats involved in human trafficking (called the flesh trade in this book, which is period appropriate) accountable for their actions. The House of Lords wasn't apt to punish their own, so the Queen Victoria's agents step in.

In this story, sweet and quiet Ivy Cavendale thwarts an intruder at an orphanage where she is working and eventually realizes orphans are being stolen by the human trafficking group. She works with police commissioner Edward, who unexpectedly inherited a dukedom, to find the villains. We're also introduced to Ivy's friend and the patroness of the orphanage, Olivia Smithwick.

This was such a great ride and the romance was lovely. I immediately started the next book in the series after finishing this one.

Without a doubt, this is the best book in the series so far! From the very first page, the plot pulls you in with its gripping tension, layers of secrets, and a delicious undercurrent of mystery. The chemistry between the characters crackles with energy, and the romance? Absolute chef’s kiss — the perfect blend of instant attraction and a deeper, meaningful connection as they get to know each other.

I especially adored the forced proximity trope and the playful “please teach me” moment (you know the one 👀).

We also make serious progress on the Devil’s Sons storyline, and get some juicy glimpses into Philipa’s arc — I’m beyond excited for her book!

Highly, highly recommend this one — it's a must-read for fans of romance with depth, drama, and just the right amount of spice.

Ivy Cavendale is a friend of the Queen's Deadly Damsels and the current (and newest) headmistress at an orphanage. After a harrowing incident she encounters Commissioner Edward Worthington, spy for Queen Victoria. They grow closer as the danger surrounding them increases, but can they both overcome their past and find their way to happiness together? I liked it! I have read the previous books in this series and have enjoyed them all. This one was a little slow to start for me but the pacing picks up as you go along. Both Ivy and Edward are haunted by their past and closed off for their own reasons. Ivy has been emotionally scarred by family trauma and abuse. Edward is wracked by guilt over his sister's death 20 years ago. It was satisfying to watch Edward help Ivy draw on her inner strength to overcome some of the horrific events of her past, as Ivy did the same for Edward. (Pay attention to content warnings, there's always delicate content since the series deals with human trafficking, but this one has some especially troubling content.) This is not a standalone and as with the other books in this series, there's a nice mix of intrigue, danger, and romance. Throughout there are touches of dry wit, which I always enjoy. Great choice if you're looking for an open-door historical romance with intrigue and suspense and a mystery to (continue to try to) solve. Definitely read the other books in the series for peak enjoyment! Publishes June 6, 2025. This review was based on a complimentary eARC of the book and all opinions are my own.

⭐ 4
🌶️ 1.5
🥵 Spicy chapters: 15-16, 17, 21
📚 Tropes/Themes: Inspector x governess-ish, romantic suspense, spicy lessons, tortured hero, trauma healing
👀 Dual POV 3rd person
💔 Triggers: Foster care/orphanage, adoption, toxic/abusive parents, mentions of: child/sex trafficking, suicide, & being institutionalized, very slightly graphic mentions of CSA

💬 This was an enjoyable read! This is the 4th book in the Queen's Deadly Damsels series, and the second one I've read (I've read #2 and now #4 lol) but functions well as a standalone. I had grand plans to read books 1&3 but life 😅

I loved the mystery aspect- something I remember from the second book. And I didn't figure this one out until the very end so it kept me guessing. I also really loved reading as both the MCs help each other work through their trauma and heal. The romance aspect of the story was so sweet and extra swoony. You could just feel the tension between them. McGuire does a great job of blending the romance and mystery elements together into one story.

I did have some questions in the beginning that took a while to be explained which made me feel a little lost, and I realized I really dislike regency/UK slang for genitals. I get that's a weird thing to realize but since this is spicy and the commissioner has a very dirty mouth 😏 it stuck out to me.

I would caution readers to check triggers with this book, it was darker than I expected and while most things were just mentioned as part of their past, they are important to the plot.

Lady Ivy Cavendale, daughter of an evil dead duke, prefers to stay out of being the center of attention. Taking the job as Head Mistress at the All Souls Orphanage, leaves her in position to prove she's stronger than she looks. A member of the Queen's Deadly Damsels, she's learned to take care of herself. Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Edward Worthington, Duke of Landbourne, secret spy to Queen Victoria, noticed Ivy at a ball. Intrigued, he has the opportunity to work with her to expose members of the Devil's Sons. Attraction between Ivy and Edward will lead to nothing, unless they can overcome fear and guilt.
The fourth book in the series.
I recommend reading them in order with an overlap of characters

Mystery, Romance, Spies and Spice set in Regency England.

Ivy Cavendale, a wallflower & Edward Worthington, a dashing Duke and Scotland Yard Commissioner have an undeniable attraction, but can they overcome their tortured pasts and give into temptation?

This was a fun read with the two main characters, Ivy and Edward, and a return of the supporting cast from the first three books.

Darcy McGuire definitely knows how to keep your interest in the fourth book of the “Deadly Damsels” series. This could be read as a stand alone, however each book builds on the previous and adds to the enjoyment.

Thank you to Boldwood Books & NetGalley for the complimentary eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

What can I say other than I absolutely love these books. This book in particular was one of my favorites in the series! So much character depth, the romance was *chef’s kiss*, and the way that Darcy connects all the dots book after book is just dang impressive. One thing I absolutely love is anytime Stokes and Philippa get into it- so hilarious! Darcy, if you’re reading this- thank you. Please continue to write romances!

“Because I do want him. Most ardently.
But even more than wanting, she missed him.”

✨ The Vibe:
Trauma, trust, and undercover missions - this is not your average duke-meets-lady romance.
A story about healing, justice, and discovering that not all men are monsters… even if some definitely are.

📖 The Plot:
After her father’s and brother’s scandals left her with little more than a tarnished name and no financial security, Ivy Cavendale - daughter of a duke - vowed never to marry. Fueled by her father’s bitter lies about men, she’s carved out a new path as the headmistress of All Souls Orphanage, devoting her life to something meaningful.
That is, until she finds an intruder at the orphanage - an encounter that spirals into an unexpected investigation linked to a much bigger case… and to Edward Worthington, Duke of Landbourne and Queen Victoria’s undercover operative.
He’s carrying his own emotional baggage - haunted by guilt and the trauma of loss - but together, Ivy and Edward slowly untangle not just the case - but each other’s wounds.

✔️ What I Loved:
No slow start - this story dives in right away and keeps the pace.
Ivy’s independence is refreshing and realistic - her strength feels earned.
Edward is more than the brooding duke stereotype - haunted, determined, and quietly vulnerable.
Their emotional connection grows naturally, with great chemistry and some heat, but never overshadows the plot.
The criminal subplot adds just enough tension without dragging the romance down.
The balance of trauma recovery and romance is handled with care.
The cover? Gorgeous. The kind that makes you click “Buy Now” before reading the blurb.

➖ What Could’ve Been Stronger:
The mystery wasn’t much of a mystery - I saw the villain coming early on. A twistier resolution would’ve elevated the final act.
The ending felt a little rushed; I wanted just a bit more space for emotional payoff.

💭 Final Thoughts:
A Most Unlikely Lady is a heartfelt, slightly steamy, emotionally satisfying historical romance with a sharp heroine, a complicated hero, and just enough criminal intrigue to keep things moving. I read it in under 12 hours - and I’d happily pick up books about the other characters in this world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ More, please!

A Most Unlikely Lady is the forth book in The Queen’s Deadly damsels series and takes up the story of the hunt for the men known as the Devil’s Sons, the men who are behind the horrific flesh ring of child trafficking of young girls from the country who are drugged, then shipped across the channel to France to be sold into prostitution.
Lady Ivey Cavendale, a quiet, retiring former wallflower, introduced into the circles of the Duchess of Dorsett, Lady Philippa Winterbourne, a woman who works clandestinely for Queen, is now trained as and considered as a member of her group of operatives known as the Queen’s Deadly Damsels.
She has only recently accepted the position of Head Mistress of the All Souls Orphanage and is s learning to manage her role. She is about to face her first crisis when she hears a series of thumps along the corridor from her room.
Bullying herself into action she is forced to confront a young man who has broken into the orphanage, terrifying the children. She shoots him in the shoulder by mistake, locks him in the room and sends for the constable.
In the meantime, the intruder escapes and this sets off a series of what seem to be unconnected events that seem to mean nothing at all, but as the day’s pass, could also be part of a plot orchestrated by the Devils Sons.
Commissioner Worthington, Duke of Landbourne, spy to Queen Victoria and friend of Lady Philippa, becomes embroiled in the shooting in his role a Commissioner and also as he has his suspicions about Ivy Cavendale, the daughter of the man known as the Snake; a member of the Devil’s Son who is now dead.
As Edward and Ivy discover they have to work together to uncover who is behind this horrific racket, they also discover they are falling deeply in love, something neither of them ever wants or expects. They both carry secrets, are both damaged and both simply want to live their lives in peace.
Will they, with the help of the Deadly Damsels, be able to discover what is going on, and who are the other members of this deadly triangle before they can spread their hateful pervasion further.
Darcy McGuire has created another steamy romance between the sheets of Regency England in A Most Unlikely Lady with which to while away an afternoon relaxing on the couch.

A Most Unlikely Lady by Dacy McGuire is the fourth installment of The Queen's Deadly Damsels series and if you haven't picked these books up yet, you definitely should.

In this book, our fmc is Miss Ivy Cavendale. If you've read these books, the name will be familiar. She's Millie's best friend but also the daughter and sister of some men taken down as part of the Devil's Sons. That said, she has done what she can to survive and she is now the headmistress at an orphanage. When an intruder breaks in one night she is quick to defend her charges but she is pulled into the investigation and with the help of the Commisioner, realizes that she and other orphanage children are in more danger than anyone thought. They are the next target of The Devil's Sons.

Commissioner Edward Worthington owes the Duchess of Dorsett (the head of the Damsels) a debt so he's keeping an eye on her new protege - Miss Cavendale. When he is pulled into the intruder investigation, he is intrigued and he finds himself fascinated by her. He can't seem to stay away from her.

As Edward and Ivy become closer, it's clear that Edward has to take things slowly with Ivy. He knows she has had some trauma during her time with her father. That said, he also has secrets and burdens in his past and believes that no matter how things proceed with Ivy, she deserves more than what he can (and should) give her. He doesn't deserve to be happy but if he can help Ivy and give her a bit of happiness in the short term, he will do whatever he can for her.

I loved these two characters and it was great to see these two characters overcome their pasts. I also loved that we finally got to learn more about Phillipa and Edward's background. It explained a lot and I hope we get to see Phillipa's story in the next book. We also get more on the Devil's Sons and it will be good when we see the last arm of this group brought down. If you're looking for a new historical romance that has great characters, a bit of mystery, romance and sexy times, consider picking this one up. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

À Most Likely Lady by Darcy McGuire is book #4 in the Queen’s Deadly Damsels Damsels series. This book is a Historical Romance, but there are also elements of mystery and intrigue in the story. This was my first read by Darcy McGuire, and I enjoyed the story without having read the other books in the series.

Lady Ivy Cavendale has taken a headmistress position at a London orphanage, and is managing well until an intruder breaks in one night. As the break-in is being investigated by Scotland Yard, Commissioner Worthington takes a special interest in the case and vows to protect her at all costs. He pledges to stay at the orphanage each night, and also encourages Ivy to work with him to solve the mystery. Ivy has become a target of the Devil’s Sons, a secret group of noblemen who have committed horrible and depraved crimes.

Edward Worthington has been fascinated by Lady Ivy for a long time, and as they spend more time together, they fall in love. I really liked how respectful and patient Edward was with Ivy, who struggled with past issues as she and Edward got more involved. He also encouraged her in many ways, which I found refreshing and positive. These characters have great chemistry and affection for each other. Both main characters are committed to helping others and fighting for justice, which was a refreshing twist in a Historical Romance.

I found the author’s style to be overly wordy. She would describe each situation and feeling in multiple ways, which felt repetitive to me. However, I really liked the multi-faceted, complex characters the author creates in this series. The reader sees the main characters fall in love, but they also are working for justice and to pursue criminals. They have complicated pasts and relationships with friends and family members.

A Most Unlikely Lady has romance, mystery, and intrigue. The ending is happy but also very dramatic as the criminals are found. This novel would be a great choice for anyone who enjoys the Bridgerton series, or Historical Romance in general.

Thank you to Darcy McGuire, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for an advance reader’s copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

a most unlikely lady is the fourth installment of the queen's damsels series, but as you can read it as a standalone as well. this book focuses on miss ivy cavendale who, after her fathers and brothers scandals, is left with a tarnished name and almost no financial security vows to never trust a man and is now the headmistress of all souls orphanage. That is, until she finds an intruder at the orphanage and is thrust into the middle of a much bigger mystery alongside duke and commissioner edward worthington. while both characters carry their own heavy emotional baggage, it is soon obvious that they can't seem to stay away from each other.
°°°
let me start by saying that this is not your average duke-meets-lady regency romcom. this book focuses on trauma, grief, post trauma healing, justice, and much more!!! while i was very emotional reading these themes, i know they can be triggering for some so please check the warnings before starting.
i loved how this story didn't have a slow start, how it stepped right into the action and kept that pace with its storyline. as with all regency inspired books, i really loved the overall vibes and especially the concept of the queen having a group of women called the deadly damsels.
the plot focusing on so many important themes like injustice towards women, verbal abuse and harassment, and trauma recovery were balanced amazingly with the romantic aspect and the ongoing mystery. although the mystery wasn't that much of a mystery, i think it added enough tension without dragging anything down. if only the emotional resolution had a bit more space because i felt like after everything the ending came a little bit rushed.
the characters tho... i loved (almost) everyone and i'd love to talk about them one by one but the main characters need their own moment because both were imperfectly perfect. ivy made me cry and my heart ache more than i could count with everything she had to endure and went through. but she also made me smile, be proud of the woman she became, and cheer on for her. the character development she, herself, went through is just amazing and so empowering. her strength, her composure, her bravery when it comes to those she loves, and her fierceness... she might be one of my favorite female characters. but let's also take a moment for edward, who might be the most caring and delicate man ever written. the tenderness he treated ivy with, understanding the trauma, respecting her and her ideas, and him being in awe by ivy's fierceness and bravery made everything so much better. he's also not the duke you'd expect, his quiet vulnerability and hauntedness added much more depth to his character. while both of their backstories made me cry a lot, i loved the way they healed each other.
overall, a most unlikely lady is a steamy (A LOT so definitely beware) but emotional historical romance with sharp but vulnerable heroes and lots of mysteries among the noble. i'll probably be picking up the former books but this one comes out june, 6th!!!

Darcy McGuire kicks off another tale from her 'Deadly damsels' series, following the proteges of Lady Phillippa, Lady Winterbourne, under the aegis of Queen Victoria, herself - a sort of Queen's Lady, if you please. Think Bridgerton meets Charlies Angels - these sparkling, intelligent unconventional heroines, stifled by rigid patriarchal rules, train in hand to hand combat, weaponry and self defense - and why you ask... Why, all in an attempt to bring justice to the scoundrels' in the House of Lords, who are often let off with by the peerage with slaps on their wrists.

They are often abetted by their counterparts - the dashing heroes, of course, under the Prime Minister, hunting the same villains! How these two factums clash, sizzle and burn forms the basis of the novel. Add in dimensions of equality, crimes against voiceless victims and a brace of adventure, horse riding and a lot of interspersed spicy moments make this a fascinating read.

This book in particular deals with Ivy, a lady who has suffered under the whims of a callous parent and a hapless sibling - our elf-like, petite wallflower, who captures the heart and soul of the Commisioner and Duke, Edward Worthington. Both Ivy and Edward have broken spirits, and are often held back by their own cages from living to their fullest. Ivy is currently embracing her role as a protector for the children in an orphamage, where a nightly intruder invites inspection from the commissioner. Add in some human trafficking, beauty and the beast vibes, this makes an excellent read for any Victorian fan, albeit some of the swearing may be more modern, considering the period in question. This gripe aside, this is a fast paced, easy adventure mystery with oodles of spice!

3.5 out of 5 stars

I picked up A Most Unlikely Lady thinking I'd just read a couple of chapters before bed... and suddenly it's 2 AM, I'm emotionally compromised, and I’m ready to throw hands for Ivy Cavendale.

So here's the tea: this isn’t your usual balls-and-bonnets historical romance. Nope. It’s got trauma, spies, fake names, an actual orphanage (!!), and a broody duke who low-key moonlights as Queen Victoria’s secret agent. Wild, right?

Ivy..daughter of a disgraced duke, now headmistress of an orphanages swore off men forever (understandable, considering her father was the worst). But then this random man breaks into her school and she straight-up shoots him. Turns out he's tangled in the same creepy child-trafficking ring she’s unknowingly standing in the middle of. And boom, in walks Edward, the undercover commissioner/duke/guilt-ridden softie who’s supposed to keep an eye on her. Cue sparks, secrets, and slow-burn healing that had me feeling things.

What I loved most? Their chemistry simmers but never overshadows the bigger plot. It’s slow-burn but delicious. The action scenes weren’t fluff – they actually mattered. And Edward? A man who listens, respects boundaries, and isn’t afraid to confront his own ghosts. More of that in fiction, please.

The mystery wasn’t shocking, I’ll admit – kind of guessed it early on – but honestly? I didn’t care. I was in it for the emotional payoff, and this book delivered.

Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

A Most Unlikely Lady by Darcy McGuire is the fourth book in the series called The Queen’s Deadly Damsels. In each of the prior novels the damsels were able to solve and help the Queen. This novel focuses on Miss Ivy Cavendale, a wall flower and a woman who had been beset by troubles with her father and brother leaving her with next to nothing.

Ivy decides that she needs an occupation and becomes the headmistress of All Souls Orphanage. Ivy describes herself (as do many others as shy and retiring.) however when someone breaks into the orphanage intent on harm, Ivy rises to the occasion and is able to stop the assault. Later , she realizes that the group The Devil’s Sons were responsible. The Devil’s Sons are a ring of aristocrats and others who kidnap/steal young girls and sell them into slavery. The trafficking of young girls is something that Commissioner Edward Worthington, a dashing Duke and Scotland Yard Commissioner is focused on and he is hoping that Ivy can help him track down the person she saw.

Duchess of Dorsett, Lady Philippa Winterbourne who runs the Queen’s Deadly Damsels is not sure that this is something Ivy should do. However, she does see how Ivy and Edward can connect…

I enjoyed the novel. It started off with a bang and allowed the reader to become pulled into the mystery. I enjoyed Ivy coming into her own and liked Edward for her. A Most Unlikely Lady by Darcy McGuire is a good read.

A Most Unlikely Lady by Darcy McGuire comes out this week (June 6).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

A Most Unlikely Lady is part of The Queen’s Deadly Damsels series, but the good news is — you can totally read it as a standalone! If Sherlock Holmes met the Bridgerton universe, this book would be their beautiful, sassy lovechild.

The story follows Ivy, the headmistress of an orphanage, a brave and fiercely independent woman who doesn’t back down from danger. Edward, the chief of police, is everything you’d want in a historical romance hero — protective, determined, and absolutely swoon-worthy. The two of them join forces to catch a ring of criminals involved in the kidnapping of children… and, of course, fall in love along the way.

I didn’t realize how much I could love historical romance until I read this book. It made me smile constantly! The tension, the banter, the stolen moments — it was all so perfectly written. Their romance is surprisingly spicy (yes please!), and Edward… what a man you are!! 😍

I also appreciated how the author tackled the societal expectations of the time. Ivy fights for her independence in a world where even being alone with a man was considered scandalous — and Edward doesn’t try to tame her, he helps her discover who she is and what she truly wants. That dynamic? Chef’s kiss.

This book gave me mystery, passion, witty dialogue, and a heroine I could truly root for. I’m already adding the rest of the series to my TBR. If you love historical romance with a twist of danger and a whole lot of heart, this one’s a must-read.

In the latest book in the brilliant Queen Victoria’s Deadly Damsels series from Darcy McGuire, readers follow Miss Ivy Cavendale, the seemingly fragile headmistress at a London orphanage, as she attempts to stay anonymous until a break-in forces her to defend herself and her charges against the Devil’s Sons. Commissioner Edward Worthington is shocked when he discovers how much trouble Ivy can cause despite being overlooked by everyone else, and Ivy herself is shocked that Edward sees her and ignites curiosity within her. As they join forces to discover the invader at the Widow’s Ball, both Edward and Ivy will discover their own hidden strengths and perhaps find more than their suspect at the end of the investigation. In A Most Unlikely Lady, Darcy McGuire delivers another thrilling installment of the Queen Victoria’s Deadly Damsels series, blending espionage, romance, and female empowerment into a compelling tale. Miss Ivy Cavendale, orphanage headmistress and survivor of deep personal trauma, has built a quiet life of duty and protection. But when danger intrudes, Ivy’s resilience collides with Commissioner Edward Worthington’s unyielding determination, drawing the two into a world of secrets, peril, and unexpected passion.

McGuire strikes an impressive balance between heart-pounding suspense and tender intimacy. Ivy’s journey from guarded self-preservation to rediscovered strength is poignant and believable, while Edward’s protective nature is matched by his respect for her independence. Their chemistry simmers with witty banter, emotional depth, and a satisfying dash of spice.

This novel excels not only in its romance but also in its portrayal of solidarity among women, highlighting the strength found in friendship and shared defiance of societal expectations. With its clever mix of danger, mystery, and steamy Regency romance, A Most Unlikely Lady cements McGuire’s place alongside the best in the genre. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, this book is both a rewarding standalone and a tantalizing continuation.

This was very nearly a 5 /5⭐️ from me! It made me laugh, made me tear up, and even blushed! It reminded me of Jane Eyre's meets Bridgerton, and I loved the dark mystery moved into the plot.

It blew me away how much I fell for this book! Life was really an inconvenience because I could NOT put it down! I struggled with the upper class POV to begin with, and I was worried the characters would grate on me with their hoity toityness, but around 25% in, I was hooked!

I loved the inner monologue throughout the book as if the characters were arguing with themselves. They were so funny and full of banter!

The FMC is your typical delicate little "wallflower" but with a fiesty protective side to her that ignites a passionate flame in the broody MMC. Together, they explore their growing relationship (and eachother) and there's one scene in particular (IYKYK) that will definitely get your heart racing! If there were more scenes like that, it would have made it a 5/5 for sure, but I like my spice as smutty as it comes, so maybe I am just being too greedy!

I have never been more excited to realise that this was 1 of 4 standalones in the series, never run so fast to Amazon for the others!

ARC received with thanks to NetGalley.

A Most Unlikely Lady is the fourth installment in Darcy McGuire’s series, but it works perfectly as a standalone, as each book focuses on different characters.

This historical romance was a refreshing and thoroughly entertaining read. The witty banter and the characters’ inner monologues had me laughing out loud more than once. The story centers on Ivy, who has recently accepted a position as headmistress at an orphanage. When an intruder breaks in, Ivy—trained by the Queen’s Deadly Damsels—doesn’t hesitate to defend herself and shoots him.

Edward, a lord and the commissioner of Scotland Yard, already has his eye on Ivy. When he hears of the incident, his protective instincts kick in, and he moves into the orphanage to ensure her safety. Together, they work to uncover who is behind the break-in and the mysterious group known as the Devil’s Sons.

Amid the intrigue and danger, Ivy and Edward must also confront past traumas before they can acknowledge their growing feelings for one another. Their emotional journey adds depth to the fast-paced plot and charming romance.

A delightful mix of mystery, action, and romance with strong, likable characters—this book is a standout in the genre and a joy to read.

With every book in this series I enjoy it more. Lady Ivy is a heroine much to my tastes. Almost 30 and a wallflower capable of cowing even the Commissioner of Scotland Yard. Lessons in intimacy on top of this make for a great dynamic between them. This series is about ladies absolutely capable of defending themselves, but who find their ideal partners and protectors along the way. They work together and are equally in charge. I honestly thought this would be the last book, but the overarching plot isn’t fully resolved. Some things that I think are or have been red herrings, but I think I was able to guess at least part of the direction this will continue to take. A fun, sexy, historical romance, and absolutely a fun series. Just considering how industry never feels like it’s really part of these books, aside from the fact that Queen Victoria is ultimately in charge these do feel like they might have been Regency era, and the covers don’t do much to dispel that. Nonetheless, looking forward to the continuation and absolutely recommend.

Give it a try if any of this makes interests you:

- Victorian setting
- evil secret society
- kick ass women
- A+ tension and yearning
- comedy

This is book 4 in 'The Queens Deadly Damsels' series. They appear to be a series of interconnected standalone stories, and having not read books 1-3 did not impact my understanding or enjoyment of this book, however, having read it, I definitely wish I had read the prior 3 as I reckon they will be great stories judging by the snippets of the other ladies we meet in this book.
I was totally engrossed in this story, finishing it in 2 sittings over the course of 9 hours, I just didn't want to put it down but alas real life interrupted me!
Set under the reign of Queen Victoria, the women are understandably constrained by societies standards of the time, however they show strength and confidence at times that gives them some modern day grit!
There's some really tough topics addressed, such as abuse, orphanage, illegal homosexuality, grief and violence. The topics are inkeeping with the setting and handled appropriately. To counterbalance the harsh realities of many of the characters, we also see humour, warmth friendships, trust, and love.
There are some fairly explicit discussions and scenes, the language all being time-setting appropriate.
Fans of period romances with a bit of mystery and thrill to them will absolutely love this.

I was very lucky to read this as ARC and it’s the 4 book in series definitely give it a read

When seemingly fragile Miss Ivy Cavendale takes the headmistress position in an orphanage, it is her chance to stay anonymous in society. But not all is what it seems with Miss Ivy. When an intruder breaks in one night, she’s quick to draw her weapon, and while fear - her constant companion - has mysteriously disappeared, one thing is very clear: she and her charges are the next target of The Devil’s Sons.

She may not trust many, but something tells her she should trust Edward… with more than just this mission.

Thank you to Boldwood Intern for this ARC.

This is book 4 in the Queen's Deadly Damsel series and finally, we get to know more about Miss Ivy Cavendale.

After we meet her horrible Father and Son in the previous books, Ivy reputation has been damaged by her family's actions and has taken a new job as the headmistress of an orphanage run by the Lady Society.

The first night on the job, she stops and shoots a man breaking into the girls' dorms and attempting to abduct her. The man manages to get away, but not before being injured.

The Commissioner Edward Worthington , has been asked by Duchess to look out for Ivy in her new role. Edward has been drawn to Ivy at every ball they have both attended together and is eager to make sure no harm comes to her.

After she was attacked, he decided to move into the orphanage to protect her and the kids under a disguise. As they both believe this man might be a member of the dreaded 'The Devils Sons'.

Both Edward and Ivy have haunted pasts, but together they slowly overcome their demons, while protecting the children, and take down the Devils Son Organisation. I loved Edwards' slow approach to Ivy, I loved their partnership and marriage.

I am so intrigued where this story is going - will we get to know the Duchess more?

“A Most Unlikely Lady” by Darcy McGuire was probably my favourite of the Deadly Damsels series. The really loved Edward Worthington’s story of redemption and how he manages to win over Ivy all while convincing himself he will keep his vow to remain single. He was so gentle with Ivy as she found her strength after having survived an abusive father. I loved seeing Ivy come into her own and discover her power and it was neat to see Edward help her there.

Ivy takes a position as the headmistress of an orphanage at her friend’s request but Phillipa her friend and self defence teacher as well as a spy for the queen does not trust her other friend’s motive. After Ivy shoots an intruder, Edward poses as a servant to help protect the house and brings Ivy on his investigations to help ID the man. The forced proximity leads to Edward starting to loose control of his vow not to love and for Ivy to start loosing her fear of men with Edward. The chemistry heats up near the end and so to does the action! A great book from start to finish and such a great series so far!
