Thank you so much to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Agent Cupcake follows Miguel, a 12yo, who gets to work as a spy for the bureau of mystical creatures (MBB). He has always been passionate about mystical creatures and can't wait to use his knowledge about them to help the MBB. He gets paired with Agent Cupcake and they immediately get to work, going undercover, investigating and uncovering mysteries.

This graphic novel is the perfect middle grade read, it touches on important real life themes while using a language that fits the demographic in question. It's a fun spy story and the mistery elements are very interesting and captivating. Throughout the story there's also little magnifying glasses that lead you to the bonus material at the end of the story, and give more info about certain aspects of the story.

The illustrations are very colorful and cute, I loved how the different mystical creatures are represented.

A Magical Mystery with a Heart of Gold

I received a NetGalley e-ARC of this book.

Mel Hilario and Lauren Davis's Agent Cupcake is a delightful and clever graphic novel that is sure to charm middle-grade readers and adults alike.

It’s a beautifully illustrated and witty spy adventure that successfully blends a vibrant fantasy world with grounded, relatable themes. While the plot moves at a brisk pace, the genuine heart of the story and its sharp social commentary make it an incredibly fun and worthwhile read.

The core of the book is its fantastic premise: a twelve-year-old human boy named Miguel, who is an encyclopedia of mystical creatures, gets to be a spy for the Mystical Beasts Bureau. His partnership with the impossibly cool unicorn, Agent Cupcake, is pure magic.

Their dynamic is the engine of the story—a mix of goofy awe and professional determination. Miguel’s journey is especially touching as he grapples with finding his place and learning that his knowledge and unique skills are just as valuable as any magical power.

The story is a fun, fast-paced caper with plenty of codes to crack and clues to collect. What’s most impressive is the layer of subtle (and not-so-subtle) social commentary woven into the narrative. The critique of corporate exploitation and the commodification of art and culture is handled with a light but effective touch, making it accessible to young readers.

The art style is a vibrant treat, with a colorful and expressive palette that brings the world of mystical creatures to life in a way that is both modern and enchanting. The extra spycraft information at the end is a wonderful bonus that adds to the book's value.

------------------------------------------
Pros:
* Charming Premise and Characters: The concept of a human spy in a world of mystical creatures is a delight, and the partnership between Miguel and Agent Cupcake is a highlight.
* Smart Social Commentary: The book tackles complex real-world issues like corporate greed and exploitation in a way that is understandable and thought-provoking for its target audience.
* Engaging Art Style: The illustrations are bright, energetic, and full of personality, making the book a visual treat.
* Educational Element: The inclusion of real-life spy facts and a glossary adds a fun and unique educational layer.

Cons:
* Pacing: At times, the story moves a little too quickly, particularly in its central mystery. Some plot points and the timeline (everything seemingly happening in one day) could have benefited from a bit more space to breathe.
* Subtlety: While the commentary is a strong point, the corporate villain's name and its connection to a real-world company is a bit on the nose, which may not resonate with every reader.

------------------------------------------
Overall, Agent Cupcake is a fantastic addition to the middle-grade genre. While some minor pacing issues exist, the book's genuine heart, wonderful characters, and clever narrative make it a magical and worthwhile adventure. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves spies, unicorns, and stories with a powerful message.

Miguel is excited to finally find a place where everyone appreciates his obscure mythical beast facts, but when he goes on his first spy mission with a unicorn, Agent Cupcake, Miguel realizes that there's a lot more to spycraft than just knowing facts. After nearly bungling his first mission, Miguel is more determined than ever to figure out who is stealing unicorn magic and how to stop them, but he'll have to regain his confidence first.

This book is a great combination of silly and thoughtful. I like the way that it addresses belonging and what it means to find your tribe, but it also reminds us that fitting in isn't necessarily about conformity. There are none-too-subtle jabs at certain big corporations and more than a few amusing jokes. The art is playful, and the dialogue feels authentic. And who doesn't love some awesome spy facts? I would recommend this book for middle grade readers who like InVestiGators but are perhaps looking for something a little more serious (just a little).

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

Miguel is a bit of an outcast at school, so when he gets the chance to join the Mystical Beasts Bureau to help them solve mysteries, he jumps at that, as he loves all things mystical.

This is a fun spy story, for the middle grade set, that actually teaches how to solve problems, such as how to read ciphers, how to pick locks and what spies use to communicate with each other. Not all things can be done by the average kid, but at least that gives them an idea of how to do it.

I really like Miguel, the main character. What I like, besides that he is an outcast, and not popular with his school friends, is that he isn’t perfect the first time he tries to spy. But as everyone around him points out, no one is good the first time, at anything they try.

A fun book, with bright colors, and silly characters, but with heart as well. Very enjoyable.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out on the 4th of November 2025.

When I was a little kid, I liked unicorns so much. I even asked for one for Christmas, and this fixation never really went away. I want more books and films about unicorns, so I was so pleased that NetGalley gave me the opportunity to read this graphic novel before publication.

IT WAS SO CUTE AND PASTEL AND MAGICAL. I enjoyed every second of it, and I'm really hoping there will be a next one.

4/5⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an arc of “Agent Cupcake”. I really enjoyed the art style in this graphic novel, it reminds me of Steven Universe. The story was interesting, with all the spy related elements, and I liked seeing all the mythical creatures related to the plot (specially the water creatures, the unicorns and the dragon)!! 🫧✨

I came for the beautiful and cute cover and I stayed for the fun and educational story.

Longua's artwork is stunning. Often cartoons get overlooked in the art world, which is such shame when you have people like Longua putting down beatiful art on each page. From color choices to character design this comic looks fantastic. There was so much detail in many of the panels, and the full page spreads were gorgeous. The hours that had to go into those pages alone is mind blowing.

Agent Cupcake isn't just something pretty to look at, though. It's a great story for kids who are interested in spies and/unicorns. It's filled with wit and metaphors, but most importantly it's an engaging story with a lot lessons for kids that are given either directly or indirectly through the text.

One of these lessons is empathy for others and for oneself. Throughout Miguel's adventure, he makes mistakes, and he is always met with compassion and understanding from those around him. In fact, Miguel's harshest critic is himself, and he has to learn to give himself grace and be okay with making mistakes--that's it's all part the process to learning any sort of skill.

There are several lessons that focus on similar concepts of self-love and compassion for others scattered throughout the story.

Of course, the biggest lesson of all is how to be a spy. From disguises to decoding encryption to picking locks, this book gives just enough of a taste of that information to get kids curious about the topics and seek out more in-depth information. Additionally, it encourages kids to take the information that they've learned and share it with their friends.

Overall, this is wonderful book, and I appreciate NetGalley for giving me an Advanced Reader Copy.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

Miguel Mangayayam gets hired by the Magical Beast Bureau since he is very interested in learning all he can about supernatural creatures, and because his mother works there. He is paired with Agent Cupcake, a unicorn who has lost his magical powers. Right away, Miguel learns a lot about unicorns (their horns DON'T purify water, and dragons are allergic to unicorns), and gets started on missions right away. A fashion store, Paleontolgie, is selling outfits with pilfered phoenix feathers, and investigating this leads to deeper problems. The unicorns sell their crafts on the Betsy website, but those whose work sells the best are losing their magic! What does this have to do with HOARD, a massive online retailer? The unicorn Ganache is some help, and contact one of his online friends, Polly, who works at HOARD to find a way to get into their headquarters. Miguel and Cupcake manage to infiltrate the building, but will they be able to get the unicorns magic back? There is a glossary at the back of some of the technology terms used in the book.

This was a rather goofy satire of online commerce; since Anthropologie jeans retail for over $200, I'm not sure that tweens are really their demographic. (I was glad to see that high rise jeans and sweaters with embroidered motifs seem to be back, however!) Miguel has a lot of anxiety, so goes back and forth between the manga star eyes and weeping, so that would be appealing to young graphic novel readers. If Graley's Donut the Destroyer or Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn are popular in your library, I'd take a look at this title. Wow. The first Phoebe came out in 2014. Seems like just yesterday.

Agent Cupcake by Mel Hilario, Lauren Davis and Katie Longua review

Genre: middle grade fantasy mystery
Rep: BIPOC

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for giving me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Agent Cupcake is a fun graphic novel about Miguel who is starting his spy training at the Magical Beasts Bureau. This agency recruits magical beasts and humans to protect society so there’s a lot to see and soon Miguel gets assigned his first adventure to solve a mystery.
This middle grade graphic novel would’ve been perfect for my younger self. I would’ve loved to learn about spy work and protecting society and its citizens magic. I loved how there are little signs that there’s more information on certain things in the back of the book. This book manages to be educational on different societal matters, be very fun to read with a great mystery plot and gorgeous magical beings, and be beautiful in its art with a diverse cast of characters.
What I loved most is that this graphic novel combines the educational bits into the story and helps the reader understand the world at the same time. Some of the educational topics were password safety and dealing with making mistakes and being different from your peers. It was a magical journey with wonderful characters!
What I would’ve liked to see, was a division of the plot into chapters, as I never really knew what a good time was to take a break from the story. Still, this is a minor critique.
I would encourage everyone to read about Miguels and agent Cupcake’s adventure!

I picked up Agent Cupcake expecting a traditional story, so I was surprised to find it presented as a comic book. What hit me first was the vibrant comic book format—bold illustrations bursting with pastel hues, unicorns whipping up enchanted plushies, and a young hero cracking codes alongside a pastry-obsessed agent. It's got that fun, fast-paced energy of a graphic novel, with panels that zip you through the action like a secret mission. The story follows Miguel as he joins the Magical Bureau of Burrowing to save unicorns from a corporate villain sucking away their magic, mixing whimsy with sneaky spy lessons on everything from spyware to safe-cracking. It's clever how it sneaks in real spycraft facts without feeling like a textbook, keeping the pages turning with humor and heart.

The plot has some predictable twists, like the big bad corporation reveal, but the character dynamics shine, especially Miguel's wide-eyed enthusiasm clashing with Agent Cupcake's sassy vibe. Pacing-wise, it flies by in short bursts, ideal for quick reads, though I wished for deeper dives into the magical world-building. Overall, it's a sparkling intro to graphic novels for kids, blending fantasy fun with educational bites that make you feel like a junior agent yourself. If you're into visual storytelling, this one's a sweet treat; for prose lovers like me, it's intriguing but not a full reread.

This was a fun little graphic novel with some deeper undercurrents. The children old enough to identify those plotlines will appreciate it.

There’s also the basics of secret codes/ sleuthing techniques with extra information set a little apart from the story itself that the more adventurous of younger readers will also be excited by.

We have a mixed crowd of characters, with magical/ fantasy creatures and regular humans milling around together. We have an organization which works together in tracking down issues that impact the overall cooperation between the different species.

Our protagonist is someone who recently joined the organisation in a special capacity. Being one of very few humans is a definite privilege. The case begins simply but ends up more complicated than previously thought. It’s a nice way of showing what supportive atmospheres can do in encouraging talents and ideas.

Overall it’s a nice book for children younger than pre-teens ( mostly because I think teenagers will think themselves over such narratives). I am not sure it will appeal to all types of children but younger me would have definitely enjoyed it.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Miguel has always loved learning about mystical creatures, so he is ecstatic when he is hired by the Mystical Beasts Bureau to be a spy. He learns he will be partnered with Agent Cupcake, who is a unicorn (which is even more exciting for Miguel). They are quickly thrown into a mission when a fashion company is using blackmarket materials. This leads to a bigger case though when it turns out unicorns' powers are being stolen.

This was really cute! I loved the idea that what we would call mythical exist in this world, and I really enjoyed the art. The main storyline is throwing some (not so) subtle shade at a big corporation that is also the name of a river and how it tries to get rid of independent artists, like the unicorns that work at Betsy (wink wink, nudge nudge). There were times I wish things had been explained a little bit more, but I might be thinking about it from an adult reader in terms of plot cohesion. It also seemed like everything happened in one day?? Maybe I missed a day break though. Despite that, it was still a fun, cute read!

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

Thank you, Mel Hilario, Triple Dream Comics, and Netgalley for giving me a digital advanced copy of Agent Cupcake in exchange of an honest review.

Agent Cupcake ★★★★

Trigger warnings: violence.

This is such a clever little graphic novel that thoroughly discusses the themes of capitalism, exploitation, and cultural appropriation in a method of expression that is easily understood across the demography of readers; the luscious, colorful anthropomorphic fantasy creatures are a visual treat to enjoy, each of them showing how the metropolitan period modernizes the way of living for these creatures while acutely displaying a sharp critique of how the loss of tradition is caused by the cosmopolitan world.

The protagonist, a young human boy, serves as an expressive and effective conduit for perceiving the intended messages through a youthful perspective—maintaining its innocence without being too naive and piercing without being alienating. I believe that this is one of those books that you have to read for once, both for leisure and keen insight, to reflect on what the reality is

Miguel is a 12 year old who gets to work as a spy for mystical beasts but he has to keep it a secret. He loves mystical beasts and love to learn about them. He is paired with Agent Cupcake, a unicorn and he is over the moon as unicorns are his favourite beasts. They work on a case and we go on this adenventure with them.
I was invested in the story since page one, it was introduced in simple way and was very easy to understand. Miguel was adorable and his and agent cupcake's dynamic was fun to read. I loved the messages it gave to the young readers how power is not just something you are born with but something you can learn and develop by having different skills.
The art style is beautiful, magical and enchanting. I want to see this to be turned into a series and see the duo go on different adventures.

I'm not sure there are words for how much I loved this book, but I will try. There is so much packed into such a small book. The use of real spy tricks and knowledge as well as the extra information at the back of this book, makes it really special. The reader learns so much about spies, mythology, and more without even realizing it as they are brought along on this thrilling adventure. The parallels to the real world and "subtle" commentary on how certain businesses run themselves and the cost of those choices was a great addition as well. However, most of all, the characters and their journeys to find a sense of belonging is such a relatable story no matter your age. Highly recommend this one!

Thank you to Oni Press for an early copy of this book.

3.5 starts rounded up

Miguel landed his dream job and working with a real life Unicorn, total dream comes true, all by the age of 12.

The story is cute, the drawings parts of it was rough, but the ones with detailed background, those art were nicely done.

Story line was simple, how do you not embarrass yourself in front of mystical creatures and do a good job? Miguel had to learn that things don't happen overnight. And as they work thru a case, Miguel stop beating himself up for doing wrong and started to understand how to work together.

Story was interesting, but not to my Middle grade student. (shrug)

this is such a fun graphic novel! I love the concept of a mystical beasts bureau and it's kind of like a secret spy organization but with all of these different creatures and species of people. agent cupcake is a unicorn who gets paired up with brand new 12-year-old agent Miguel and they have to go on a mission. Miguel learned a lot about spycraft and agent cupcake learns how to find community again. very cute and one that I could see this series growing quite easily.

I think this is one that I'll end up picking up for my 10-year-old nephew. it's an easily digestible but exciting and intriguing graphic novel perfect for that age group.

Such a fun kids' story! In this world, humans live alongside mystical beings, and there’s an organization dedicated to keeping those creatures safe from people who might want to harm or steal from them. Our main character, a middle schooler, gets accepted into the organization as a young spy and is partnered with a unicorn! He worries about messing up his missions since he’s new, but he learns that you can’t grow without trying. A great story filled with imagination, teamwork, and wonderful lessons for young readers.

I had a blast reading this magical spy graphic novel. It is a delightful mix of real-world spycraft and mythical fantasy. I’ll be recommending it to a broad range of kids, from Spy School fans to mystery buffs, and, of course, fantasy lovers.

A hilarious story about a lonely boy who ends up working in a spy agency for magical creatures. With his unicron partner he must find out who is stealing magic from unicron's. The story uses really spycraft and at the end of the book as information on real life spies! The story itself also has some thoughts to impart about corporations. A fun read for children but adults will also get something out of it as well. I would be delighted if more volumes where written.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the chance to review this ARC!

I really liked this fun little graphic novel and I know I would have loved it when I was younger, so I know kids will love this book. The only thing that bumped the rating down for me was the art style. It just wasn't my favorite, but I am not the intended audience and I think kids would really like the art style. I will definitely recommend this graphic novel to the kids I know.

Miguel doesn't fit in. He's interested in Magical creature facts.
When he is hired by the MBB as the first human spy, he and his handler, Agent Cupcake, a magicless unicorn, show him the ropes. They discover together that a popular company is abusing its employees and stealing magic.
This was such a fun spy novel. Bright and cheerful while attacking overconsumption, climate change, and the issues with a business monopoly. Children will learn a bunch from this.

I'm hoping for more stories in this series. Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC.

This is the smartest, most clever mid grade GN I have read in forever!! I had no idea the authors were Bay Area girls... I wish they would come in the store and sign the copies of Agent Cupcake I have displayed FACE OUT on the shelf!! Despite being rife with mystical beasts, human error rolls out of each page. Betrayal, unending doubt, forgiveness, greed and faith abound in this sleeper gem of the year. 100000000% recommend.
