Blending the charm of a small-town mystery with the mind-bending possibilities of time travel, The Carousel Effect is a thrilling addition to the Jerrod Series, and science fiction debut from Wayne Hughes. A story of loyalty, discovery, and the timeless What if?
The plot was intriguing and I wanted to enjoy it, but was disappointed.
An artifact was found on a ranch at the same time a bunch of weird things happened within the surrounding area. Bureaucrats, Federal Agents, Scientists and the US Military got involved with the weird happenings and made life hell for the rancher with the secret find. Throw in a bit of science fiction dimensional time traveling and it's a recipe for a great story; however, it jumped around and skipped over details which leave the reader wondering why the author chose not to fill us all in on the whole story.
Have you ever had someone share some gossip with you when you didn't know the people or places they're talking about and they act as if you are supposed to know all those minor details so you end up not understanding the point of what they're saying? That is how this book feels. The author is assuming we all know things that only live inside his imagination. Unless he puts those details down on paper, we cannot possibly grasp the story he's telling us.
The Carousel Effect hooked me from the first page with its intriguing blend of small-town charm and mind-bending time travel. Max Arnold is a relatable protagonist, and the mystery surrounding the artifact kept me guessing. The story’s mix of loyalty, secrets, and consequences makes it a compelling read for sci-fi fans and newcomers alike. A strong debut that leaves me eager for more in the Jerrod Series!
This book really surprised me in the best way. The Carousel Effect isn’t just a story—it’s an emotional journey. Wayne Hughes has a beautiful way of writing that feels honest and reflective. You can feel the weight of each moment, the characters' struggles, and those little revelations that sneak up on you.
