PI by day, reluctant witch by necessity—Beatrix has a case to crack and a legacy to reclaim.
I walked away from my magic, my past, and the home I was born to protect. For the last decade, I’ve been scraping by as a PI in the non-magical world, solving human problems and ignoring the legacy that should have been mine. My magic is barely worth mentioning—unless you count my menial ability to sense emotions, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
But then my oldest friend breaks into my flat with a desperate plea and I’m suddenly heading back to Witchlight Cove—a hidden magical town on the British coast I swore I’d never see again.
The Eternal Flame, an enigmatic magic that protects the town, has vanished. A ruthless property developer is circling my family home like a vulture. And a poisoning at the village fête proves there’s something far worse lurking in the shadows. If I don’t figure out what’s going on, I’ll lose everything—not just my inheritance, but the only people I’ve ever called family.
With my fiercely loyal retriever by my side, a murder to solve, and a smug, insufferably attractive rival getting under my skin, Witchlight Cove is about to test me in ways I never imagined.
Some legacies can’t be escaped. Some flames refuse to die.
Perfect for fans of strong heroines, lovable animal sidekicks, and heart-racing urban fantasy, Secrets of the Forgotten Heir delivers action, charm, and supernatural surprises. With stand-alone mysteries, sharp humour, and a swoon-worthy slow-burn romance spanning the series, it’s an unmissable treat.
Witchlight Magical Mystery Secrets of the Frostbound Cottage - a prequel story Secrets of the Forgotten Heir - Book 1 Secrets of the Deadly Nightshades - Book 2 Secrets of the Eternal Flame - Book 3
This was a five-star read except for one thing that seriously bothered me throughout most of this book. Beatrice, who has been a full-time PI for a long time, suddenly turned into a novice detective the moment she knew the people involved in her current case. And she acted like a child when corrected. I was annoyed by this most of the book. I loved everything else in this book and didn't want it to end. Especially with everything that needed to be revealed and what WAS revealed at the very end!
Secrets of the Forgotten Heir (Witchlight Magical Mysteries Book 1) knocked my socks off. Heather Harris and Ella Stone make a dynamic writing duo. I was engaged by the story from start to finish.
Beatrix Stonehaven was born and raised in Witchlight Cove. However, she has spent the last ten years in London, working various jobs until becoming a P.I. When she gets a desperate call from her bestie, Maddie, begging her to come back, she's out the door and on her way.
When Beatrix (Bea) left Witchlight Cove, she was the Keeper of the Eternal Flame. She and Maddie had been so tight growing up together, Bea felt comfortable leaving Maddie to guard The Eternal Flame.
This first book of The Witchlight Magical Mysteries tells about the mysteries behind Bea's family and why she is a virtual outcast in her community. Woven in between the history of her life, four people are murdered and the blame, which seems obvious, jumps from person to person.
Secrets of the Forgotten Heir is a fast-paced, exciting story for those who love Urban Fantasy. It's filled with witches, shifters, vampires, and Sorcerer's. Harris and Stone have also left the ending with a kicker of a cliffhanger. Great start, I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Yeah…. No. I tend to give Ms. Harris a lot of leeway because I like her voice and a couple of her earlier series were awesome. This, however, is so over-the-top silly and unbelievable that even I couldn’t justify it. From police who do the dumbest things imaginable, to an FMC who reads as the most selfish (almost narcissistically so) woman to walk the planet, to a “love” interest that has absolutely NOTHING to make us believe it (it’s just a TaDa! Completely out of nowhere with two people who have don’t even know each other!). The best way I can describe the book is that it feels like when a bunch of kids get together and tell stories. The big stuff is there but no one even thinks to add anything more… kinda of like, “ She didn’t want to go home but she had to and then she found a dead body! And it was awful, and then he kept showing up….”
The bottom line? If you are just trying a Harris book, PLEASE don’t start with this one! Try any of the “Other” (…Realm, Wolf, Witch…) series, because she really has written some great books.
I’ve liked this writers other works but I just really didn’t like the FMC in this, and at 57% of the way through I can’t get over that. Once you start wishing something would just eat her and let it be over, it’s time to DNF.
First in a new series and it was good. I will say it was slow at times but then picked up. The mystery around the murders had enough red herrings to really keep you guessing. I give it 3.7-4 stars
First in a new series! I totally thought this was going to be a cozy mystery/fantasy. (Is there a word for that like there is “Romantasy?” Mystantasy? Let’s make that a thing.) Private Investigator/Witch Beatrix moves back to her magical hometown because her family legacy, the Witchlight, is missing. Her town has a fayre, for crying out loud, WITH a pie eating contest. If that doesn’t scream “cozy,” I don’t know what does. But what comes after is an investigation fraught with perils.
Let’s take a minute to talk about Beatrix. She is so relatable. She avoids painful parts of her past, loves her dog and coffee, and dislikes mornings. Me too, Bea, me too.
And like Bea, I didn’t put together the ending until it was almost too late. The last few chapters literally flew by as I raced to see what happened next.
Secrets of the Forgotten Heir kicks off a new series from Heather G. Harris, introducing us to Beatrice—an empathetic witch, reluctant heir, and long-absent guardian with a very cute dog named Eva.
Beatrice makes for a refreshing main character. She’s not your typical overpowered witch; her strongest gift is empathy, which lends a quieter, more nuanced approach to her magic. I loved this about her—it made her more human and relatable. Plus, Eva the dog adds charm to just about every scene she’s in.
The story starts strong. Beatrice returns home after a decade away, having fled following the tragic death of her parents. She’s been working as a PI in the human world, and now she’s back because something’s gone wrong—the eternal flame she’s meant to guard has gone out. Mysterious, right? Add in Fraser, a dark and intriguing love interest, and the set-up feels rich with promise.
But unfortunately, that promise doesn’t fully deliver in this first instalment.
For someone who’s been a PI for ten years, Beatrice doesn’t seem to do much actual detecting. The murder mystery that’s meant to be the core case is ultimately solved by a mix of forensic evidence and rather convenient leaps near the end—not much legwork or clever deduction. It made the PI angle feel more like window dressing than a real part of the story.
More frustrating, though, is the flame plotline. It’s central to who Beatrice is, to why she comes home, and to the tension of the story—or at least, it should be. But it doesn’t go anywhere. We don’t learn why the flame’s gone out, what impact it has, or what she’s doing about it. For something that’s meant to be a world-shaking event, it just… sort of simmers in the background.
I’ll definitely pick up book two, because there’s potential here. Beatrice is compelling, the magical world is interesting, and the emotional beats land. But I’m hoping the next book brings more forward momentum. Mysteries should be investigated, not just solved by luck, and world-shaking events should shake the world.
This was a good first book in the series! Beatrix is a PI running from her grief and her past, but now that ten years have passed, it is time for her to face it. While that isn't what she planned, her best friend Maddie needs her help and comes to collect her. Bea and her trustie sidedog Eva head back to her hometown to help Maddie. They need to find the disappearing Eternal Flame, Bea's birthright to guard, that Maddie has been watching over for all these years. Also, to keep the good-looking businessman who is requesting to take ownership of her home from her. I look forward to book two to see what the town has in store and if Bea sticks around or turns tail and runs away again.
"You were never an early bird.’ She smiled. ‘More of a permanently grumpy pigeon."
Well, I just finished this, and my jaw is still on the floor after that ending. Anyway, we got to know Beatrix and her friend Maddie, Yanni, and a few other characters in the town really well. There’s a murder, and Beatrix feels she must help when her old teacher seems to be the only suspect. This is a very fun, interesting, engrossing and well-written book. I loved all the characters, and like I said at the beginning, the end was just a huge shock that I didn’t see coming. And I even liked her love interest. I can’t wait to see what Beatrix and her friends do in the next installment. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Very similar to other stories by the author. Cute and sweet. The first of the series, it introduces the main characters. I can see a slow burn for the Main FC/MC. Looking forward see where the series goes.
I am thoroughly confused to say the least. I read the prequel of this series and it got me really excited about the rest of series and of what I could expect. In the prequel we get to meet Beatrix and she seemed like a solid, self sufficient, smart and kick-ass PI, with a caring personality and just an all-around great personality. Once I started to read this first book I was thrown off guard. The Beatrix we met in the prequel is not the same person that I got to experience in this first book. She acts more juvenile, impulsive and her reaction to situations is not of the solid, smart and kick-ass character I read on the prequel. Additionally, the story itself was not as good as I expected. I am not saying is not entertaining or enjoyable, but I must say I am disappointed. I have read many books by this author and I know she is a very talented writer and her previous books are truly awesome. I am not sure yet if I will continue to read the rest of the series, but if I can offer a word of advice to Heather is that it would be great if she could make sure to give us the well rounded FMC that she gave us on the prequel and a bit more depth and mystery to the story. Obviously, this is just my opinion, but I do feel the second and third book could be much better than this first one. Enjoy!
It took me days to read this book, it just never grabbed my attention apart from the last 2 or 3 chapters. The writing pace was as lethargic as the MC.
I enjoyed the story and I like the setting. The characters are interesting and I liked the book. I will pick up the next book at some point as well. 5 stars.
Flip a duck was this book a brilliant read! Absolutely awesome! I loved everything about this book, EVERYTHING! These two authors have impressed me with their consummate collaboration, right from the fabulous beginning of this book, which immediately draws one in the tension interspersed with the humour, is fabulous. And this set the tone for the rest of the book. Having "met" Bea and her darling dog Eva in the prequel, I couldn't wait to find out where their journey would take them next! All I can say emphatically is, an excellent build up which has set off major cogs in my head! None of them right...
Bea left her past behind, where she tries to forget horrific events that caused her to run from all she knew, her friends, her town. Foraging a new life isn't easy, it's a lonely one for Bea, her PI skills and self defense classes are all she has. Thankfully she now has the most adorable, darling dog to keep her company. I really found Bea extremely likeable, personable and my heart went out to her. See, she's a witch, who lived in the magical town of Witchlight Cove with her parents, who were guardians of the Eternal Flame until tragedy struck 10 years ago. Bea, a very mediocre empath, next in line to carry the torch of the Flame, handed this responsibility to her friend Maddie and ran. So when Maddie appears suddenly, desperate for help to discover why the Flame, which was inextinguishable was gone, Bea has to face her greatest fear and return to Witchlight Cove, a double edged sword it was. And she'd barely set foot in town when the poo hits the fan, in the guise of a poisoning, in the form of a property magnet hellbent on taking over the Flame AND her ancestral cottage and to a murder... yeah, quite a lot to deal with! But hang on, there's even more happening, Maddie is happening too, nope, I'm not going to say what but hells bells I was shocked out of my boots! And what they did with Maddie, well blow me down, I was gobsmacked and then limp with relief when Maddie wasn't who I was led to assume she was.
And this is why I say this collaboration is superb, the ability to conceal, the ability to pull ME out of where I thought it was going, the ability to keep guessing, is astonishing. And then they give us characters like Maddie, who is sunshine and exuberance on tap, her grandma Yanni who's the kindest person on the planet, Bea, who's so fearful of her past and her non magic that she cuts my heartstrings with laser precision. And then...we get Fraser...ok, HOW the authors get ME to have butterflies in my tummy, well shoot, but they do! I was kind of sighing and by the end of the book, I was full on drooling! Yummy! His true nature is concealed and bit by bit, we get to see there's more to him, we get to see the layers Fraser has tucked away expertly and, oh boy, we get to see a soft, caring, very dedicated persona. I love how much I can "feel" him, same for Bea, I can feel her with every fibre of my being. Her personality, her fears, her emotions are very credible, as are her genuine love for Yanni and Maddie.
So, not only did I get an impressive read, impressive characters, sublime storytelling, I got mystery, subtly kept just out of reach, I got drama, I got to have my mind blown with revelations that honest to goodness I was agog. An outstanding story with messages strewn throughout, one which stood out like a beacon was "fear is a cancer in society, it erodes friendships, raising walls instead".I got characters that are so well defined, they stand out as individual voices, I'm loving them. Sonny is hilarious, Ezra is...hmmm... What I was very impressed with was the understated action, it was there, vividly concealed and so well depicted, only my racing pulse rate was full on aware, and THAT'S genius! The romance brewing is beautiful, and heaven help me, when THAT happens to Bea, which leads to THAT being done, well shoot, a feather could have knocked me off my feet! I was NOT expecting that bombshell at the end! At all! But I think these talented authors might just have an evil bone or two, they left me THERE at the end of the book with my jaw wide open! I need the next book YESTERDAY!
The recently released prequel to this new series, Secrets of the Frostbound Cottage, was just a brief introduction. In the official first book, Private Investigator Bea is persuaded by her childhood best friend, Maddie, to return to Witchlight Cove, her hometown in Cornwall. If you've read the prequel, you know that Bea left after some rather horrific events (evil grandmother, dead parents), but we learn at the start of this book that she also left Maddie to take over her role of guarding the actual witchlight, the Eternal Flame. Bea has some work to catch up on.
Lack of money in expensive London, as well as guilt, helps Bea make the decision to return home after ten years away. She and Eva, her dog, accompany Maddie back to Cornwall where they will all live in Bea's childhood home. Maddie's grandmother, Yannie, the chief of police, has offered Bea a job answering phones at the police station, so she can have some income. But just answering phones? No way this PI is just going to sit at a desk and wait for the phone to ring when already there are mysterious happenings -- and then deaths -- occurring.
Even though this book is the first in the series, Witchlight Cove already feels comfortable. Although I enjoyed the prequel, I so prefer this longer entry. We learn more about Bea, her family, her family's history, and Witchlight Cove in general. There's a vampire who runs a coffee shop that serves the best coffee Bea has ever tasted, yet the proprietor believes that customer service is for bad businesses that need to kiss up to their clientele. There's a new man in town whom Maddie dislikes, but Bea feels drawn to him. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? Oh, and what kind of supernatural is he anyway? What's going on with Bea's former favourite teacher who turns into suspect number one when the first person dies? (Yes, I said first. There will be more deaths -- more crimes to solve.)
It's an urban fantasy crime novel, with a bit of romantasy thrown in for good measure. But don't expect a resolution neatly tied up with a bow. Everything continues in book two. Now, when is that one available to read? (Soon, I hope!)
Beatrix has been living her life away from Witchlight Cove for a long time. She’s made a life for herself in London, even it’s a boring life. But one day, she comes home to find her best friend has broken into her apartment and needs her help. So Bea goes back to Witchlight Cove to discover that the Eternal Flame she was supposed to guarding is gone. And there’s someone new in town trying to buy Bea’s family home at the exact same time. Bea is someone who loves to help others. She likes to help others and definitely likes to take charge when investigating. (Poor Yanni!) She has a good gut instinct, even when she wants it to be wrong (looking at Fraser!). Speaking of Fraser, he is a great suspect. Is he charming bc he’s guilty? What are his motivations for wanting the house? Why does he get a discount at the coffee shop?! Is he really as nice as he seems? The remaining characters are all just as fun. Yanni is the perfect grandmother/police chief. She definitely knows Bea well enough to know she won’t just stay back and answer phones, but she also puts her in her place when it’s needed. And I look forward to getting to Maddie more as well! She’s obviously a wonderful friend to have taken care of the Eternal Flame for so long. We also get to know some of what happened that drove Bea away. I thought we may have to wait awhile, but it was the perfect way to reveal the tragedy that caused her to run. And there are hints that Eva may just be more than meets the eye after everything that happened when Bea saved her years ago. And who doesn’t love an animal companion that’s more than what they seem?! This book has the perfect amount of mystery and suspense! There are red herrings and twists I didn’t see coming. At one point I thought I had it semi figured out bc of the name of the book, but boy was I off base! And that surprise reveal at the end! Oh boy! Good thing I don’t have long to wait until the next book.
There is a lot going on in Secrets Of The Forgotten Heir and fascinatingly, several teasers for things that will come in future books. It really ticks a lot of boxes and held me captivated throughout.
Chapter 1 is one of the best reintroductions I think I've read. The FMC, Bea, was in her mystery-solving/care for the world element and her history was succinctly but clearly re-established. There was a taste of action and drama to grab my attention, with humour and self-deprecation to let me know there would be light-hearted moments and characters who didn't take themselves too seriously. Eva, the gorgeous animal sidekick, was there creating mischief and making sure she stole my heart. It started the book off with rare and real zing.
I enjoyed getting to know people and places from Bea's past, as she was reluctantly drawn back to it. The wonderful relationships these authors write so well were in evidence and brought a strong found family vibe. One character was presented in an intriguing light but then disappeared from the pages so that arc will be interesting to track for further development.
There's a nice little enemies to something happening, which was fun to watch. Muscled forearms make for some very nice mental images!!
Mystery seemed to be the focus of this book and was mixed in at all levels and in all relationships. The authors didn't dominate the narrative with it but let it drive the plot, touching all aspects of this community. It really kept me on my toes! The twists were surprises for me and a couple have been left to be carried over into the next book, so I'll definitely be returning to the Witchlight Cove world.
This is a well-rounded, well-crafted story. I've already pre-ordered the rest of the series and can't wait to dive in.
Beatrix Stonehaven is one self-sufficient, totally put-together, fine-flying solo private investigator... And if you believe that one, I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.
Trix is a magical empath with a knack for solving mysteries. Having left the magical city of Witchlight Cove after the death of her parents, she thought she was all done with magic and just making it day after day in the busy world of mundane London. It’s been 10 years now. She’s not super successful, but she makes her way… more or less. When her oldest and dearest friend breaks into her apartment, Bea figures that maybe, just maybe, magic isn’t done with her.
With her paw-tner Eva by her side, she’s going to do what needs to be done; there’s mysteries to solve… back where it all started. Witchlight Cove. And with the eternal flame having suddenly gone missing, bodies dropping left and right, and her bestie seemingly magically out of sorts… there are mysteries to solve in old Witchlight town.
“Secrets of the Forgotten Heir” is the first novel kicking off Heather G. Harris and her new partner in rhyme, Ella Stone’s, new series, “The Witchlight Magical Mysteries.” Trix is an immediately engaging and endearing character; the writing is spot-on; the world-building is downright magical; and the story just flies off the pages that the reader won’t be able to put down. There’s mystery that keeps you guessing and desperate trauma that yanks at the heart strings, I really enjoyed it, highly recommend it, and look forward to the rest of the series being published! Also, if the listened word is more your flavor, get your mitts on the audiobook narrated by Alyse Gibbs!
I received a free copy of this ebook/audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’ll start by saying I loathe the insta-lust fated mates trope. LOATHE IT! This is one of those and for that alone, it lost a star.
There were also a few inconsistencies, the first one I noticed was the coffee shop. She went with Maddie, then left for an emergency without her coffee. Later she went back to get a coffee and the owner tried to give her the two from the morning saying she hadn’t paid for them. Why didn’t Maddie pay for them? She didn’t leave.
Then at the end Bea recalls a conversation that I swear never happened in the book.
I’m not a huge fan of the FMC, Bea. For someone who’s been a PI for a decade, she’s terrible at letting her emotions dictate everything during an investigation. She would be the worst PI ever. She’s constantly making snap decisions based on a single piece of evidence or her own evaluation of that evidence, or just her own feelings and opinions on the matter. It’s ridiculous. She also acts and reacts more like a teenager than a 28 yo woman half the time. Another trope I loathe. If you have an adult character, they have to act like an adult.
This book needs a better edit, it’s not horrible for the first 70% but there are definitely some missing words, extra words, incorrect words, words spelled wrong. Likes “askes” instead of asks. Some of the sentence structures are weird too but that could be because it’s in British English, even though it’s not something I’ve personally heard or seen before, it might be regional turns of phrase. The last 30% however was riddled with errors.
The plot was relatively interesting but a bit chaotic and muddled. There was too much going on between the flame missing, the death, the missing persons, the romance, the new job, and more. I understand it’s book one and so we need backstory and introductions to people but it was still just a bit much.
I really enjoyed the prequel novella to this series, so had to pick this first full length book up and loved it.
Having been working as a PI in the human world for the past ten years, Beatrix Stonehaven had lead a fairly simple, yet lonely, life. She has had a lot of deal with but she didn't really deal with the issues that are in her traumatic past, she just ran away from them. However, the time has come for her to return home when her best friend begs her. Bea is supposed to be the guardian of the Eternal Flame, something Maddie has been doing in her stead, but upon her return she realises that the flame has completely disappeared. No-one can explain it!
That all gets pushed aside though when a poisoning, leading to a triple homicide takes precedence and Bea helps out Maddie's grandmother, Yanni, who is the local chief of police. Bea has never experienced anything like this - she has mostly dealt with missing pet or cheating spouse cases, so this case is quite a bit beyond her, but she bundles her way through and finally realises who is behind everything before it is too late.
I liked the love interest and can see the slow burn romance starting already. I knew that Fraser Banks wasn't going to be all that bad!
The ending was a bit of a surprise and I can't wait to see how this all pans out now!
A fun, quick read to the start of this new series and I'm looking forward to jumping straight into the next one now!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily please note there may be spoilers!
We re-join Bea and Eva three years after the prequel novella when she returns home to find her front door unlocked!
Before she knows it the duo and the intruder (Bea's best friend) are on their way back to the last place Bea wants to return to, the magical community of Witchlight, to solve a more personal crisis. Bea is barely back in her family home with a job at the local police station before there is a man banging on her door demanding access to the magical artefact that is her family’s duty to protect and not long after a dead body!
Although she is employed to take calls its not long before her PI instincts and her compassion have her championing for her old school teacher when the body of one of the wealthier residents is found murdered.
The suspects are few but when more bodies are found its a mystery Bea has to investigate as well as her own investigation into the mystery man who wants her missing artefact!
Will the case be solved? Will the Witchlight be found? Will Bea finally get the answers to why she has so little magic within her? Read and find out.
After teasing us with the short "Secrets of the Frostbitten Cottage", Heather and Ella return with book 1 in this fantastic series. We open with Beatrix in London with Eva her special Golden Retriever partner. They come home to an unlocked door and inside is a surprise. Bea's best friend in the world, Maddie. Maddie had been doing her job for her for 10 years, since Bea had left the town she grew up inn and the magical Eternal Flame she was tasked with protecting. Maddie had taken over the task and now asks Bea to return for shocking reasons. She even got her a job with the chief of police (and Maddies grandmother) answering phones at the station. But Maddie has other reasons why she wants Bea to return and Bea needs to figure out what those are to help her. Once she gets home she gets caught up in a poisoning, a murder and mayhem galore along with a crazy witch who freaks her out. Oh, and a hunky rich guy is all over her and want to be the guardian of the flame as well. Things cant get any worse... until they do and all hell breaks loose. This is a rapidly engaging and wonderfully charactered series with the heart and soul of two fantastic authors. Hopefully much more to come.
This is the first book in the series by the collaborative team of Heather G. Harris and Ella Stone. In the prequel, Secrets of the Frostbound Cottage, we’re introduced to Beatrix and get a teaser about her past, her abilities and her family. Now Beatrix is back and a desperate plea from her oldest friend has her returning to Witchlight Cove, a place she ran from ten years before with no intention of returning. It turns out that the Eternal Flame, a mysterious magic that protects the town, has gone missing and it’s up to Bea and her retriever sidekick, Eva, to find it before it’s too late. I definitely enjoyed this story which had multiple mysteries to solve, including a murder and a rich , questionable developer who wants access to the Eternal Flame. I enjoyed seeing Beatrix back in her hometown and I got a much better picture of who she is as she interacted with old friends and new. I found her to be very relatable and likable and could empathize with her as she struggled to make up for mistakes she made in the past. There’s a great small town vibe, some quirky and unique characters, lots of mystery, action, just the right amount of suspense and a touch of romance. This series already has so much to offer and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
I really enjoyed this and the prequel, and while I like that she is able to produce books so quickly, I would urge the author(s) to slow down a little.
Is the main love interest Fraser or Corwen? Because the audiobook mentioned Corwen a couple of times and even the blurb on Goodreads for the 3rd says he’s Corwen.
Additionally, I feel like we really lost a lot of spatial awareness throughout the book. Not only in the actual scenes, but the people/animals within the scenes which made it really difficult to follow the plot. All the while it was really rammed down our throats how Bea was a magical dud, multiple apologies, and rehashing of Bea leaving to never really get us to a place that helped explain in more depth why she left. There was a small little toe over that line once or twice but it never gave us the answers I wanted.
I do like the relationship forming between Fraser/Corwen and Beatrix. However I really wish it would be explained why Yanni and Maddie keep pushing Bea toward Ezra. I feel like Bea was kind of being weird to not seek him out and catch up as well. I don’t know, I wanted Bea to give these people who meant so much to her more credit and reconnect, I didn’t like how she kept them at arms length still.
This is a new series by Heather G Harris and Ella Stone, however there is a prequel novella which gives you a taste of the series so I suggest reading that first. Anyone who has read Heathers books or co-writes know what to expect and that is supernatural fun and this book is no different.
We have our main heroine Beatrix who is a bit of a magical dud (though anyone who has ever read a book knows there has to be some witchery going on there, she is going to have power hidden somewhere and be a magical badass)comes back to her home town after a ten year absence.
Our Hero Fraser is a shifter and you can tell these two are going to be great together but I won't spoil anything apart from giving his name.
Bea was a PI and gets herself a job in the police department so this book encompasses a case of murder, which is solved in the book. But the main plot points for the overall are are woven through the entire book which does end with a few questions and a little cliffie.
This is a MF book with supernatural goings on, light romance, friendship, a canine companion (which I expect from Heather by now) and a little bit of mystery but most of all fun and easy read.
A captivating fantasy book that follows Beatrix, a reluctant witch forced to return to her magical hometown after years away. Her childhood friend, Maddie, took on the responsibility of guarding the Flame after Beatrix’s parents passed away, but now she needs help. When mysterious deaths begin to plague the town, Beatrix teams up with Maddie’s grandmother, Yani—the town’s formidable chief of police—to uncover the truth.
With the help of her sharp-witted puppy, Eva, Beatrix dives into a web of secrets and danger. But things get even more complicated with the presence of Cowen Banks. According to Maddie, he is their enemy—someone who seeks to take the Flame from them. However, not everything is as it seems, and Beatrix begins to wonder if Maddie might be wrong about him.
The book masterfully blends mystery, magic, and personal growth, as Beatrix confronts her past while solving the chilling events threatening her town. The story is well-paced, with rich world-building and engaging characters. Beatrix is a compelling protagonist—flawed yet determined.
Overall, this book keeps readers hooked from start to finish.
The newest place I want to visit is Witchlight Cove!Right from the start, the mysteries to solve hook you and you won't be able to stop until you have all the answers! There are two main mysteries to solve and the authors did a great job of keeping them separate, but cohesive throughout the story.
I am so glad we got to learn more of Bea (FMC)'s story and why it is so important for her to go back to Witchlight Cove after being gone for the past 10 years!
I also loved meeting all of the supporting characters as well-reuniting with old friends and making new ones...espeically one that is easy on the eyes! I enjoyed learning more about PI and Police Detective work, including how Yanni taught Bea how to keep emotion out and look at all facts during investivgstions-not just jump on first thing she finds out. I felt like it shows just how much Yanni is kind of a motherly to Bea too.
I think the authors did an excellent job telling just enough history, so I could really understand the role everyone played in Bea's life...plus set it up nicely for future stories as well. I definitely recommend this book and I am IMpatiently waiting for the next one!!!!
As usual another great read from one of my favorite authors. Her characters are well developed and the plot keeps you guessing. I absolutely loved Eva she is a great addition to the cast. Beatrix had tried to leave her past behind. That included her magic, her home and her family. After her parents death she just couldn't stay there. So she started a new life & became a private investigator. All was going fairly well. She wasn't rich but she lived comfortably with Eva. Then one day when she returned home and found her house had been broken into. Maybe her self defense skill would come in handy. What she found was her best friend who needed her help. She needed to return home to Witchlight Cove. Her childhood home in a magical town that is hidden with the magic of The Eternal Flame. Beatrix and her family had been protecting it for a long time and her friend told her it was missing, vanished. Once home, another mystery popped up. Beatrix would be very busy and she was happy to help Yanni. Eva was my favorite character. I loved how she would respond to Beatrix. The story made me not want to put it down. A fantastic read and can't wait for more.
A spectacular co-author combo of Heather G Harris and Ella Stone! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s one of those that you can’t be disturbed while reading because you can’t wait to find out what Bea discovers next. When she was orphaned at 18, she abruptly left the comforts of her magical town, that is being protected by the Eternal Flame, which she had been groomed as a child to become its guardian. After 10 years in the regular world, working as PI, she is urgently called back home, only to discover that things are not at all what they were before nor what they seem to be. She regroups with her best friend and sets out to solve the mysteries that are going on around her but townsfolk are now turning up dead.
Bea continues to put her foot into the mess but things are worsening and the guardianship is desperately slipping away and she is clinging to a few memories and her pitiful witch powers, hoping to fix it all. At this point, the evil villain - so named by her best friend - may be her only hope to assist her in saving herself and her hidden town, especially when she starts to have feelings for this so called villain.
Bea is actually the guardian of a magic power, the Eternal Flame, that she left in the care of her best friend, Maddie. When Maddie contacts her to say the Flame is missing, Bea and Eve head back to Witchlight. There is also the problem of a developer wanting to buy her home and the Flame. As soon as Bea gets into town, there is an attempted murder at the country fair and then a murder. Teaming up with Yanni, the bear shifter sheriff, she starts some investigating. One of the problems is that everyone in town seems to remember the disaster that caused Bea to leave town, some people are happy she’s back, others seem scared. The developer, Fraser, is also a problem, the only person who doesn’t trust him is Maddie and although Bea wants to support her friend, she’s very attracted to him. Again, there is the wonderful dog, I read about Eve doing something amazing and look at mine wondering where I went wrong, there is no way he is as well behaved as Eve although he definitely leaves lots of hair around like she does. This is a wonderful read, some action, suspense, mystery and humour. But … after the ending, the next book is too, too far away.
