5/5! Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by Tipton. This little book is the best introduction to Christ’s work on the cross and his current work in glory that I’ve ever read! Tipton frames the conversation in the Reformed distinction between the states of Christ’s humiliation and exaltation. Using the Westminster Catechisms and Confession as a guide, he simply and pastorally lays out the ground for the believer’s new life and the sustaining power from which it comes. With surprising precision he explains the difference between union with Christ and the benefits of that union and also helpfully distinguishes how the benefits manifest the union, not the other way around. He draws out the hope-filled connection between the believer’s justification, adoption, and sanctification and Christ’s own justification, adoption, and sanctification. I think he brings out everything helpful about historic, Reformed soteriology while carefully avoiding nearly every misconception. And all that while being constantly and intimately tied to Scripture! I’m going to be getting another Tipton book soon. What a gift to my soul!
