Hernando Villa: A Sri Lankan Love Story

Rate this book
"Hernando Villa" is mainly the love story of a Sinhala boy and a Tamil girl, set in the background of the Sinhala-Tamil ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka in the early years of the 21st century.
Thulasi Muttulingam in her review in “Ceylon Today” wrote:
“Though the book claims to be a love story, it is essentially much more than that....the book is well crafted, with various threads being skillfully interwoven to give a colourful but real idea of Sri Lankan life. It is one of those “unputdownable” books that will keep the reader turning the pages to know what happens next....read it, you won’t regret it. I read the book in one night.”
Ruwini Jayawardana in her review in the Daily News wrote:
“The story is written in simple sentences that makes it ideal for light reading. Yet the satire behind the tone describing the incidents sheds light on serious themes.... Many of the cultural and traditional practices endemic to Sri Lanka are brought to the fore with descriptive details so that even those who are not familiar with these customs will have no trouble grasping what is taking place.”

Padma Rajaratnam’s parents who live in Edmonton, Canada sent her Aunt Emma’s in Goratuwa, Sri Lanka to find a suitable Hindu Jaffna Tamil (caste) husband.
Padma was welcomed by Aunt Emma.

Hernando Villa. She later met up with Reshan Hernando (husband/father, Sinhalese), Malkanthi Hernando (wife/mother, Sinhalese), Manel Hernando (son/brother, Sinhalese) & Nihal Hernando (son/brother, Sinhalese) the family she had known all her life.
It wasn’t long & Padma was meeting quite a lot of so-called-suitors.

Will Nihal Hernando & Padma & get married?
What about Manel & Nirmali?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Sri Lankan romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Sri Lankan romance movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

A fun book which gives us raw insights into the functioning of the Sri Lankan Elite through generations.

Regular life at the Villa has been intelligently weaved between political and natural upheavels in the area and have been told through the simple eyes of a family living through it all. The clash of thought between the young and the old, the fun aspects of their heritage and the serious issues of caste and marriage have been deftly dealt with in an almost charming manner.

However, this version of the book had names of the protagnists interchanged in various places making you stop and wonder what just happened. And that's the sole reason for it losing one star.

That being said, I do look forward to reading the sequel which I just noticed – Turmoil at the Villa.
