Cara Kelly should have left the faery realm now that it has a king to rule all, but nothing is ever that simple. The real king is trapped in the Fade, and Cara's journey is just beginning. Guilt-ridden by the fact Brendan's soul was sacrificed for hers, she's determined not to desert him after his one pure act of goodness. Time is running out; even if she makes it past all of the dangers of the Darkside, a shade might await her in the Fade. Running from enemy and friends alike, she sets out on a path that will lead headfirst into danger.

Even if Cara makes it to the Fade, even if a goddess watches over her, she doesn’t trust all of her companions, she still has to find a way home, and freeing Brendan could cause a war between the two faeries she cares about.

And all the while, Chaos grows unchecked.

Love triangle

If you don't like reading stories with love triangles, then this is not your story. Cara loves them both. You have to love someone to go through such a scary adventure. Fortunately for her, she is loved by her friends who come with her whether she wants them to or not. Of course, not all are there for her. I really dislike Sorcha. She is such a witch but I don't understand what she has to gain. Cara is pivotal in the fae world but it is still unclear what she can do about anything. I think my favorite part was her time with Drake and Brenden. They have such an interesting balance at the moment. I am so upset at what Drake did at the end though. I know he loves her and just wants her safe, but what an arrogant schmuck. I also have a prediction that she is pregnant, so hopefully I find out in the next book.

These books are like the fae magic described in the book to compell a person and drive them mad when not near... I haven't been able to stop reading... Great adventure!

She's pregnant. She's totally pregnant. Also, I hate Drake. I stopped shipping him with her in book 1, and then he goes and does the whole no-more-seeing-faeries thing. Like, URGH! Well, onto the next one I guess. :)

Wow oh Wow!!!' It started a little slow for me but what an explosion at the end. I have this love hate relationship going with both kings. But after this book I'm leaning towards team Brendan.

NOPE!!! Rant and spoilers ahead:

To say this book was not for me is an understatement. My bff recommended it because she assumed I’d like the strong female character (which is my jam), but I had to put this book down. This is going to be a hugely unpopular opinion, but I HATE when a character getting pregnant is critical to their character arc. I said what I said 🤷🏼‍♀️

I already thought the reason Cara’s mom was raped was incredibly stupid and now this... so I’m done.

These books remind me of The Fever Series, but the authors writing style is disappointing after Karen Marie Moning’s. The books are slow and the action seems to be an afterthought to drag the story along.

It infuriated me so much, I’m in a book slump and have had to go back and read a favorite. I don’t want to be let down by two books in a row.

My best friend loves it though, so have at it, and if it makes you mad like it did me, let me know so we can rant together!!

Damn this was a long ass journey! So many obstacles I thought Cara and her band of misfits would never get to Brendan. Cara was super frustrsting in this book, her feelings were all over the place. One minute she's laughing, joking and happy...the next she's angry and jumping down someone's throat. It was hard to keep up with her and I did start to resent her shitty behavior and attitude. Though I understood why she felt so conflicted, her behavior was still annoying as hell. I swear if I didn't know any better I would think she's pregnant....hmmmmm...the plot thickens!

Overall it was another fascinating read!

Yeeesh! What a way to end the book! What will happen next?! Oh my goodness!

This book had so much action, adventure and fae folklore in it! It left me needing more! It was a lot tenser and more gripping than the first book and the characters are really shaping up.

It was a sort of mixture of Lord of the Rings in that they travelled lots and went on adventures and met creatures along the way and other Irish Fae books that I love. It sort of fed and solidified my knowledge on the fae that way.

I feel like she needs to get back to the fae world. I need to know what happens next!

Imagine risking your soul to save another and not knowing whether either are even redeemable. Add in an immortal sneeky cat shifter, two striking fae kings, a bitchy banshee, numerous other fae that have or have not tried to murder her in the past and call it a grand old time. A birthright, a life debt, and a tangle of raw emotion packed into a whirlwind of adventure. Worth every penny in my opinion. Leaves you waiting for the next book to download.

All I can say is, I hate and despise journey/quest novels. Why do fantasy novels always have to do this? It started with Mervyn Peake and Tolkien, and it still goes on. It's all so old. Spare me, please, I beg you.

I love this series. I have been holding out on re-reading them until the series was finished as the first time I finished this book it just devastated me and I couldn't deal with my knowing what came next!
Now I'm free to finish the lot. Phew.

Fade picks up where Soul ended. Cara and Drake are alive and properly in their bodies while Brenden has been sucked back into the Fade. With Drake leaving to attend to his kingly duties, Cara, along with Grim, Realtin and the cat/woman Bekind, sets off on a journey to save Brenden.

Immediately the setup feels and reminded me of all the “quest” novels I had read while growing up (The Prydain Chronicles, The Dark is Rising, The Wild Road… I could go one here but I won’t) and I immediately had a fondness for it. On her journey through the Darkside (no space or Vader… different Darkside) Cara encounters all of the elements that make a good quest: danger, strange creatures of all kinds, a little romance, lots of darkness and even a wonderful fae animal friend in Dubh, the contrary black horse. We follow Cara as she experiences the fae world and stays grounded like a good heroine even when faced with some of the freakiest of things. All the while keeping up her wit and heart.

I found Fade to be an enjoyable second book of the Chaos Series. All the characters are progressing and changing as the world around them becomes more dark, threatening and uncertain. I’m not sure how I feel about Drake’s changes but, despite the darker side of Cara’s changes, I am glad to see that she doesn’t stay a happy and naïve creature, thinking only the best of things. While her positive outlook is there, she’s starting to see she can’t keep her hands clean much longer, no matter how much she wants to stay herself. I sense a tigress brewing.

I am also enjoying Farrell’s way of telling her stories. Her character’s dialogue is quick and you can see the expressions in their faces. You also care about the characters and feel for them whether they do something to make you cheer for them or annoy you with their choices (I’m looking at you, Drake). The faery tale continues and, much like with Soul, you are stuck with an ending that not only punches you in the gut but also makes you want to continue to find out more.

Favorite Character: I love Dubh. He is the best… horse… ever.

Favorite Runner-Up: Still loving Realtin and Grim. Arlen really starts to grow on you too.

Least Favorite Character: Scorcha. Still a bitch. However, Nella might be worse.

Favorite Fairy Tale Gone Horrid: The Hauntings. It’s a ghost town. Literally. Instead, it’s memories.

Favorite Moment: There is a moment when Cara, Brenden and Drake meet a tribe in the great forest. The night is what I would love about being a faery. It sounds like so much fun.

Least Favorite Moment: The ending. Sorry. No spoilers but… yup.

Favorite Quote: Drake is still one of my favorites at the moment so the quote comes from him:

“We’re fae… there is no sanity here. This is a wonderland with the blackest shadows tainting the edges. There’s a pretty blanket, but hidden underneath is something rotten and depraved. You don’t belong with us.”
