The Hillcroft Group #2 • MM • Age Gap • Action • Military Romance • Hurt/Comfort • Healing/Loss

Part of becoming a private military contractor was learning how to profile people.

Leighton Watts. Lonely as hell. A coward. An orphan. Twenty-four years old. Desperate to belong somewhere. Felt dead most of the time. Too much of a chicken to reach out to the family I never knew. Never asked for anything, because I was afraid to get rejected. In general, just a sorry sack of sadness.

Bo Beckett. Senior operator at the Hillcroft Group. Mentor of sixteen Hillcroft recruits, me included. Rough around the edges but patient and kind. Had sworn off relationships. Straight? Most likely. Early forties. Smoking hot. Angry. On a mission to hunt down his brother’s killer. Definitely pushy. He wanted me to get in touch with my dad’s family, and even more so when we discovered I had uncles who’d worked at Hillcroft. this freaked me out.

Another part of becoming a private military contractor was to focus on the training and not get caught up in an active operation—but in my defense, it wasn’t my fault someone tried to freaking kill me.

---------

This is book 2 of the Hillcroft Group series, and it ties together with book 3. You do not, however, need to read the first book, The Story of Danny Rose, to get the full enjoyment of Unmade. Book 2 and 3, Unmade and Remade, follow the same couple, Leighton and Bo.

I'm often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

Unmade is 80% military operation/action, 15% family drama, and 5% romance.

Bo and Leighton have one explosive scene together at 85%. The book ends with a shoot-out and Leighton freaking out over meeting his uncle.

I appreciated the dual, first-person POV but wasn't a fan of the long chapters. Far too many secondary characters crowded the story.

I didn't particularly like the MCs and have zero interest in reading the sequel.

I’m going to start off with saying this duology (Hillcroft 2 & 3) has a big cast of characters from previous books and I wouldn’t recommend reading it unless you’re familiar with those particular characters as they are a pretty big part of the story, especially in part 2 of the duology which is Remade (Hillcroft book 3)

The main books that I can tell are linked are: The Renegades (4 book series, 3 couples), Breathless (Book 3 of the Game series), Auctioned, The story of Danny Rose (Hillcroft 1), and the Camassia Cove series (this is over 17 ‘standalone’ books in total, not sure which ones are necessary but they visit Camassia Cove in Remade and mention a lot of people from there). I have not read many of these and it wasn’t so bad in this book but in the next book I felt swamped by all the cameos and the time spent with them detracted a lot from any further development with the main characters.

Waiting to write this review after reading Remade (part 2 of the duology) was a bad idea, because I liked this one - I was invested in the characters, plots were interesting, the sexual tension was hot, a connection was forming IT WAS GOING PRETTY GOOD. But then it ends on a cliffhanger action scene that felt pretty OTT RPG’s and guys with flamethrowers.. really?? (Don’t try and tell me Ms D doesn’t play COD in her spare time) and then Remade (duo part 2) was quite a disappointment 😔

After reading Remade all the things I didn’t like about Unmade but could happily ignore became more glaring. Mostly the half baked multiple plot lines - the murder, Leightons family issues, Bo becoming a dad to Alex, Leighton’s training, the people out to get Bo. None of these really came together solidly in Remade. I also skimmed the more political military talk and the interactions with the kid.

I recommend this duology for people who have read the linked books because it seems to build on a particular family with lots of extended ties and some already established organisations which I imagine would be much more enjoyable for the reader.

Cara can do no wrong, especially when we have some Tenley cameos. Sorry that's just facts.

Also Crew Finley shows up! I love him. Also, I could see him and Leighton getting up to some trouble. LOL. I just keep hearing all the old people jokes.

This ended on a bit of cliffhanger, but I am diving right in to Remade.

OMG I need part two asap because this opener was bloody brilliant.

We're back at the Hillcroft Group, and this time it's operator Bo Beckett under the spotlight alongside new recruit Leighton Watts - who might just also be a missing Quinn family member.

There's so much love in this book, even as the bullets fly and a particular mystery deepens as Leighton tries to find a direction forward after his army stint that doesn't leave him feeling emotionally dead.

Beckett's got his own emotional turmoil, still reeling from the death of his brother on an op, he's not prepared for the feelings this new mentee is giving him.

There's the usual sharp, snappy dialogue you'd expect to see in a Cara book, there's a lot of laughs too and, as this is part one of a duet, there's a kind of cliffhanger that's not particularly onerous, rather it makes you desperate for more.

It's slow burn-y by its nature, which makes sense, but the UST is en pointe throughout and when the lid finally bursts - hold on for the ride as it's smoking.

I loved the fast pace of the later half of this one, when things ramp up both with the investigation and with the potential relationship between both men and I was gutted when I finally ran out of book!

Roll on part two which fortunately isn't too far away.

#ARC kindly received from the author, I am voluntarily leaving a review

Beware of cliffhanger, if that wasn't already obvious by this being broken up into 2 books.

The character development was great. But this one is a little more focused on the Hillcroft Group and less on the romance. There was no romance until the end. Still a good story, and the Quinn surprises were delicious. Looking forward to the second book for these two MCs.

Omg, I legit wanna just say No! Absolutely not, you can’t leave it there! I need more of these guys, Leighton and Beckett are amazing and vulnerable and closed off and sweet and sexy and hot and rough. And the rest of hillcroft group is just as intriguing. First things first, this is a slow burn, the two main characters take their sweet time getting to bedroom activities. And it makes sense for the characters and the plot why it’s a slow burn. It doesn’t take away from the story at all, there’s still chemistry and tension and lust and pining. This story also does not conclude in this book, there will be another featuring Leighton and Beckett. This does end on a cliffhanger, I would call it mild, while the overall story is still going on and Leigjton’s dealing with some issues, where it leaves off isn’t such a terrible place other than I don’t want it to be over. At all. I mean, while I consider it not a hard cliffhanger to the plot, it made my jaw drop a little when I realized that no it wasn’t my kindle frozen and wouldn’t turn to the next page, there was no next page! But that’s beside the point really. The fact is, this story is wonderful and sweet and funny and frustrating and sad and lonely and hot. These guys are going through it, and they just keep pushing through life to try and come out the other side. These two are really perfect for one another, they fit together. Definite soulmates and I can’t wait to see what comes next for these guys. As always, Cara Dee has written a fantastic book that has sucked me into her works and I don’t want to leave, ever. I would live in this world if I could. She does an amazing job creating an interesting plot that keeps you engrossed and guessing, characters that you love and hate and want to hug forever. I devoured this book so fast that I’m a little shell shocked over here waiting for the second book. This series is like the renegades series, lots of action, good characters, love and a little spice thrown in. If you loved that series, you’ll love this one. Thought honestly, if you love reading Cara Dee, there’s nothing bad I’ve read by her.

This book was a real page turner. I love when Cara writes military op books. I know I’m going to love this series. Of course it has a Camassia Cove AND the Game cross over with the Quinns and Tenleys present.

The set up and execution was great.

Leighton and Bo are an unlikely pair, yet not. Their chemistry was ott hot. Cara writes good tension. The cliffhanger was 🤯 I’m glad I was able to read book 3 immediately!

Now back to reading it…

I didn’t want this book to end. And when it did I was dying to turn the page to continue. Cara Dee is the master at leaving you wanting, needing and pleading for more.

This second instalment of the Hillcroft series had me riveted from page one. It speaks to the skill of the author when you find yourself fully immersed in a world, hanging on every word, barely noticing real life happening around you.

This was a slow burn but it never felt like time wasted. I love these two men.

Bo, the PMC who’s, no spoilers, dealing with some heavy stuff all the while being a loveable bad-ass.

And Leighton, who’s dealing with the loss of his mother and trying to find his unknown father, goes from a wide-eyed 18 year old to a 24 year old military man with issues of his own.

These two take their time building a friendship and trust. But when they finally get there, holey moley, it goes from luke-warm, to hot, to absolutely scorching, real quick. Unexpectedly quick. Like, where the heck did that come from quick. We might need a fire extinguisher quick. I need to read that again quick.

And then the ending. What’s to say but - how long is 60 seconds??

I need the next book now.

I’m writing one review for both books. These were only ok for me. I’m a huge Cara Dee fan but every now and then, this happens 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t think there needed to be two books and there was too much of the military part and not enough of the romance for me. I did like both mc’s and that they communicated and were straight forward with each other. And all the side characters. And seeing some familiar faces was pretty cool, as always. I’ll keep reading the series - maybe they’ll feel better for me.

Unmade is book two in the Hillcroft Group series

This is your vibe if you like
Military vibes
Age gap
Hurt/comfort
Found family

Without fail Cara just makes me fall in love with every damn character and couple she writes.

I’m so stoked we headed back to Hillcroft, a lot of couples stories tie back to a time in this world. So we get appearances by faves like the Tenleys and the Quinns!

I’m so here for Bo and Leighton! I need more like now. That cliffhanger moment was mean Cara…

When I see Cara Dee release a book and the trope list says "age gap & hurt/comfort" I know I'm in for a good time. I feel like the hurt/comfort in part 2 is going to be so epic and I'm absolutely ravenous for it. I can not wait to see Beckett and Leighton together now that things between them have picked up. THEIR DYNAMIC. OMG. YOU GUYS. IT'S PERFECT. I won't tell you what it's like though you'll have to read it to see ;). It's so hard to write this review without spoilers but I am BEYOND READY to have my greedy little paws on the next installment.

Side note: CARA IS THE QUEEN OF PET NAMES. I DIE. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I MELT.

The second book in the Hillcroft Group series by Cara Dee. This is the story of Leighton Watts, who is searching for his lost family, a place to belong, and falling for the one man he might not be able to have. It's also the story of Bo Beckett, dealing with grief and anger, who never expected to fall for the new recruit he's supposed to mentor, not f*ck.

This is definitely an action book, although the first part of the book is fairly calm. We get to know Leighton mostly, until he meets Bo again when he starts as a recruit at the Hillcroft company. This story felt so real, I was really there with Leighton and Bo, learning new subjects in my classes with Leighton, and getting drawn in my the ongoing mission of Bo. There is slowly blooming feelings as well, but it's secondary to the overall story line.

We see some familiar faces from other books from Cara Dee, even though this series (and this book as well) can be read as a stand alone. You really don't need to have read the other books or even the first novel in this series.

For the slow start this book had, the story really picks up at the end and we kind of end on a cliffhanger. Not a fan, but I know Cara won't make us wait long until the next book in this series comes out, hopefully giving Leighton and Bo their own HEA.

I loved Bo and Leighton's story - it was a tension filled slow burn with a lot of heart and feelings to it!

Leighton tugged so hard on my heartstrings, he was very lost and lonely at the beginning of the story, trying to find his place in the world. He and Bo shared a connection almost instantly, even if they only met twice and texted a few times in the first six years. Bo had a soft spot for Leighton though, and once Leighton ended up at Hillcroft, they just couldn't stay away from each other.

Bo had a lot to deal with, still grieving his brother and trying to work out how to be a single dad. He wasn't ready to admit his attraction to Leighton at first, and it took him a while to come to terms with his feelings. Their story was the best kind of slow burn, with lots of small interactions and sexual tension, and once they acted on the attraction it was just *chef's kiss*!

The banter, humour and found family were all fantastic, and there were some sharp and fun dialogue as well. I loved the crossovers / cameos, and the speculation about Leighton's family ties added a bit of mystery. The action and suspense built up fast towards the end of the story, and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Unmade was a highly enjoyable and entertaining read that I couldn't put down! I have to admit that I was kind of relieved that I waited until Remade was released so I could jump straight into the second part of Bo and Leighton's story - I really couldn't wait to see more of them!

Holy cow! What a ride. This ends on a cliff hanger a very good cliff hanger, but book 2 is out of that helps.
Also watch your triggers especially surrounding the spice.

What a book. I had to come back and write this review because I have to immediately read book two. These two were fire! I loved their relationship. Their healing their understanding of each other in seeing each other. Their encouragement for each other and how they supported each other was amazing. Their spice was 😳 I wasn’t ready for it, but it worked for them. I loved the surprise visit from a few past MCs also. On to the next book because that cliff hanger is a good one.

I. Loved. This. Book!

I am absolutely a fan girl of Cara's, and I read every single thing she writes. Her characters always feel incredibly real, and I especially love when her books are located in the Washington DC metro since I live here. It's just an extra special little thing for me.

So all that to say that I knew going in that this would be a good read because they are always good reads. But this one gripped me from page one. Poor Leighton is all alone in the world, floundering, trying to figure out what his life looks like now that he's an orphan. His dad ties us to the Quinn's in Camassia, and this series is all about Hillcroft where we get some more TenShay cameos. That already sounds amazing right? And it's just the icing on top!

The pacing was just right. We really get a feel for what Hillcroft is like, how Leighton is settling in, meet back up with some not new but characters we've just seen small bits from in Danny Rose's story. And I love the addition of Alex because Cara writes kids well.

The relationship between Leighton and Bo feels really natural and...real. They are recruit and mentor - and all the push and pull and feelings of confusion that could bring up. How they straddle the boundaries that naturally should be in place. Cara really likes to write age gap romances, and while this one doesn't have a daddy element, there are definitely some little comedy gems about age thrown in.

One criticism I do have is that I wish we could have some variety when it comes to the spice. I feel like every book from Cara for awhile now involves CNC. It's not my favorite element so to see it over and over brings downs the vibes a bit. Not every single dynamic needs that, and I'd just really like to see something different.

But we do get action! I was honestly curious how that would work with Leighton as a recruit because who's going to let a recruit be in the field? The ways the action scenes came about were really smart, and definitely made the story richer without being unbelievable for a recruit to be involved in.

BUT THAT ENDING!

This is another duet which I'm past hating. I really wish we'd stop getting these books split into two parts - just write the whole thing THEN release it. But I hate it even more this time because there really is a super emotional cliffhanger that is going to kill me to wait to resolve. Thankfully, the next book comes out really soon.

So. Read the book. It's awesome like always. But just know, you'll have a cliffy for a little bit. It's okay, we can be sad together!

I thoroughly enjoyed Unmade by Cara Dee. This action-packed read kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved the world the author created. I’m excited to see what the next book does and how it’ll build on this one.

One aspect that really sets Cara Dee apart is the commitment to making characters realistic. The raw emotion and flawed humanity comes through perfectly in these characters. It’s what makes them relatable and draws me in. I’d like to note here that there was mention of ASPD characteristics. I thought the author handled this exceptionally well. It was well researched and explained in an excellent manner. It showed a sensitivity and understanding of the topic.

I also highly respected the way the author deftly handled grief, anger, and abandonment issues. Cara Dee once again proved the masterful skill of weaving a character that is multidimensional, facing real challenges and living with the effects of it. I am looking forward to part 2 to see how the character development continues for these two characters as I’ve fallen in love with them both.

That brings me to one of my favorite parts. The chemistry! It is a slow burn for the most part, which honestly I thought was perfect, especially dealing with a mentor situation. I also liked that aspect in regards to the age gap. Despite having to wait for the explosion, the tension was there and kept me hooked. And when they did come together? Well, explosion may even be an understatement.

There is a small amount of kink thrown in. Although I’m a major kink lover, I am thoroughly enjoying Cara Dee really getting back to more of the older style that’s so perfectly layered. The kink I thought fit exceptionally well. It is CNC so please be aware of that, but it fit beautifully and the caretaking afterward melted my heart.

The worldbuilding expanded more about the Hillcroft Group, which I appreciated. I think it’s such an incredibly rich world. Plus, all the action really kept me captivated.

While I know it may be controversial, I’m a sucker for a well written cliffhanger. This one is perfectly executed and fits the story. It made sense to break it there although I’m certainly desperate for the next book. I’m glad there’s not a long wait, but I greatly respected such a perfect cliff.

5 stars for everything I could want in a read!

Both Leighton and Beckett are great in their own ways: hot and rough, sweet and sexy, vulnerable and locked off. The remaining members of the Hillcroft group are equally fascinating. You should know going in that this is a gradual burn; the protagonists don't rush into bedroom antics. The gradual buildup is purposeful and serves the plot and characters well. Everything that makes the story tick—the chemistry, tension, lust, and pining—remains intact. There will be a further book involving Leighton and Beckett; this one does not wrap up the plot either. While the plot is still unfolding and Leigjton is still dealing with certain challenges, the cliffhanger isn't that bad; the only problem is that I don't want it to end. None whatever. I mean, it's not like there's a major narrative twist or anything, but when I realized that there was actually no next page—and it wasn't just my kindle freezing—I was shocked. That, however, is irrelevant. The truth is that this narrative is fantastic, charming, humorous, heartbreaking, lonely, and steamy. These men are in the thick of it, but they refuse to give up hope of overcoming their challenges. In a way, these two are tailor-made for each other. Undoubtedly, these two are soulmates, and I am incredibly excited to witness their future endeavors. Fantastic as always, Cara Dee's writing has me engrossed in her world and I never want to come out. In an ideal world, I would make my home here. She pulls off a remarkable job of crafting intriguing narrative points that keep you turning pages and characters that you will either adore or despise. I am a bit taken aback by how quickly I finished this book, and now I am patiently waiting for the second installment. Similar to the Renegades series, this one has thrilling plot points, likeable characters, romantic subplots, and an extra dash of spice. Fans of that series will adore this one as well. Honestly, I haven't read anything negative written by Cara Dee, thus I would recommend her to everyone who like her work.

**I am a member of Cara Dee's ARC team and received an electronic ARC via BookSprout.**

Cara Dee returns to The Hillcroft Group with book 2, Unmade. Readers follow Leighton Watts as he struggles with finding a place to belong. After the death of his mother from cancer, he pursues the information he has on his deceased father to the Hillcroft Group where he first meets Bo Beckett. Leighton enlists in the army only to be back at Hillcroft as a recruit several years later, with Beckett assigned as his mentor. Despite the information he's gained, Leighton has never reached out to his father's family, certain they don't know he exists and unsure if that should change. When Beckett realizes two of Leighton's uncles are Hillcroft employees, the pressure is that much higher for Leighton. And what's worse, Beckett's hot.

This author has never been one to shy away from the hard topics, and Leighton certainly has a lot going on. There is a heavy focus on seeking help from friends, family, and therapy. Especially with the line of work that Hillcroft employees are in, Beckett makes no secret of the fact that addressing mental health concerns is a requirement. This is a welcome change from a lot of paramilitary or military stories, where "strength" is frequently shown by sucking it up.

Leighton and Bo are a pair I'm eager to continue to follow into their second book (book 3 in the series). It is my understanding that their story was originally meant to be one book that got split due to length. While I am thrilled to get more of these two, the cut off point is absolutely diabolical for this one.

As always, Cara Dee's books feature lots of crossover with her other stories, and the cameos/easter eggs are so much fun.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read Unmade early and eagerly await the sequel.

I loved this story so much! Leighton is so real and I was so sure he would turned away when he went to Hillcroft and first met Bo. I admired Leighton when he enlisted and worked so hard and then became a recruit. He was loner and he struggled at first and when he found out that Jacob Quinn was his dad and that others in the family had also worked for Hillcroft and he was so sure that they would reject him. Bo was drawn to him and he struggled with being with him too much and his drawing back hurt Leighton. It was ironic that when the some of the recruits had to be moved due to flooding and Leightion ended up in Bo's room and he shot a man who had broken in and they knew it was connected to the men who had killed Bo's brother Vince.
When Leighton wanted more with Bo it started in the shower and when they did finally fuck it was so hot! When Bo left on a mission to Fredericksburg Leighton was down and then talking to Coach in the lobby he spotted the duffel bag a man had left and Coach got the duffel and he and Leighton ran out and the duffel exploded. Killing one of the men and then catching the van and diving in was leaving me breathless. I was impressed with Coach and Leighton and shooting the driver and other occupant and getting out(so glad that the innocent men were not killed; how ironic since in the real world they would be on their way to detention in Texas before being sent to El Salvador). I knew there was a cliffhanger but not that Bo was coming and that Leighton had just met one of his uncles and had a panic attack and that was the end. Can't wait for the next book.

I have already read a few books by Cara Dee and was therefore very excited about Unmade. What can I say? I really enjoyed Unmade! The author has a wonderful writing style and it didn't take long before I was in the middle of the story.
This time it's about Leighton, who feels lost after the death of his mother and therefore tries to find his father's relatives. And so he ends up at Hillcroft to meet Bo Beckett, whose name he found on a note.
In Unmade, the author gives an insight into training at Hillcroft, as Leigthon applies there after his time in the military. I've been waiting to find out more about Hillcroft for a long time.
I also loved how realistically the protagonists were created. I could directly feel Leighton's raw emotions and his inner turmoil and I liked him from the start. He struggles with grief and anger. We also learn a lot about Bo Beckett and he's not a fan of relationships, but he's a hot operator.
If you're looking for romance, this is a slow burn romance, but it fits the story very well. There is a constant underlying tension and the chemistry between Leighton and Bo is explosive.
But there is also plenty of action and suspense, which is why I was thoroughly entertained.
The ending leaves me feeling a little desperate. Leighton's world may or may not be turned upside down - either way, I was super excited to see what happens next. And then the story ends with a nasty cliffhanger. Now it's time to wait for the next volume and I'm really looking forward to hopefully reading the next one soon!

4.5 Stars!

I can't wait for the next book! While I can't say I like where this one ended, I am of no doubt the upcoming book will be worth the very short wait. This book leans into the making of an operator at Hillcroft as the reader follows Leighton, a new recruit, and Bo, who has been at Hillcroft for a number of years.

I felt for Leighton. He was left with no one to really rely on and the information his mother kept from him made things worse in some ways. While I didn't like how he made some of his decisions early on in the book, I can see that it led him to the right place. I think he will fit in well at Hillcroft assuming he can complete their training.

Bo was an interesting character, and I liked learning about him. Superficially, he seems to have a lot of contradictory behaviors, but they are really just parts of a complicated man. He's convinced he was not a good partner for anyone, but for those he truly cares about, he would move heaven and earth. I could see the right person causing him to change his mind. It was fascinating to see him struggle and rationalize his interest in Leighton and then finally acknowledge the attraction. When they both give in, they have amazing chemistry and are hot together.

This story is a slow burn as far as romance goes, but there is a lot going on and Bo's case accidentally sweeps Leighton into it. It'll be an amazing ride to see how things turn out in the next book and I can't wait to read it.

One word: Fabulous! And I could stop there. But I must admit I need to share the goodness and I am definitely waiting on pins and needles for book two which will be out in two weeks so thank God!

This story has so much: an orphan who wants to join Hillcroft and is counseled to do an Army stint first. Leighton Watts comes back to the same operator who he met the first time: Bo Beckett. Bo is older, hotter, and tougher than anyone Leighton has ever imagined. He's also straight. And when Leighton shares some of the results of his search for his deceased birth father, Bo is the first to have an inkling of who it might have been. That subplot runs throughout the story, but it's just one of the subplots. One of the others is Leighton's attraction to said straight man. And another is simply Leighton's training to be a Hillcroft operator. But let's add to that the target Bo has on his back ever since his brother was killed the previous year. So much packed into so few pages, but never a boring moment in this story.

And when Bo finally gives in to his attraction to Leighton, um, the 4th of July celebration can't even compete with the heat levels. Make sure you have a personal fan handy because... whew. I can't even.

Oh, and I didn't even get too far in to who's family Leighton was born into and the fact that they have no idea, but tune in to part 2 for that big blast-off. Should be amazing. Can't wait.

I am over the moon to be back with the Hillcroft book for the next installment of this series. If you were a fan of the Renegade series, this will be another home run. In this one, we find ourselves following new recruit Leighton Watts. He’s a little adrift and looking to find his place in the world after his mother’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent death. He never knew his dad and only had his mother’s tales of being his dad’s ‘wingman’ to go on, and after her death, his search led to his first encounter with Bo Beckett at the Hillcroft Group. It was enough of an impression on a young Leighton, who was somewhat directionless, that he enlisted in the Army, ending up right back on Hillcroft’s doorstep with Beckett as his group mentor. He’s like many other veterans—dealing with mental health issues—and the trauma surrounding his mom’s death and his uncovering information about his father continues to contribute to his compartmentalizing and unraveling. His ability to persist and push through while he’s not at his peak speaks to his character, and Bo is a constant, steady presence. There are lighthearted moments with the TenShays, Alex (Beckett’s daughter is gold), and Leighton’s fellow recruits (can’t wait for those stories to come) to balance out the heavier feels. If only that last page wasn’t the last page… I can’t wait for the next book!

Leighton. Man, did he pull at my heartstrings from the very beginning. Lonely. Lost. Untethered. While I can’t relate to the trauma he experiences at a young age, those feelings of being so unsure of where you belong, being rejected simply for who you are, definitely hit home.

This was an exciting read for me. Having read Cara’s entire library, having one of my FAVORITE characters be a Quinn, I devoured each page of this book with so much anticipation for how this would play out, but I also found myself desperate to learn everything I could about Leighton. Because I know the Quinn’s…and I was right beside Bo, rallying behind Leighton to just give them a chance. Take a risk.

I think that while Bo is struggling through his own personal tragedy, he is the perfect person for Leighton to lean on…no one knows the significance of having family that understands you and relates to you, more than Bo.

After spending an embarrassing amount of time trying to turn the page after reading THAT question from THAT character, only to realize that was, in fact, how this part of the story ends, I feel slightly better knowing I won’t have to wait long for the fireworks after the bomb is dropped.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Dee has lured her loyal readers into her latest romantic suspense series by promising (and delivering) a ton of the crossover potential that makes the sprawling shared world of her books so much fun. However, new readers shouldn't hesitate to take a chance on a book that seamlessly intertwines the external and relationship plots, focusing on a surprising connection and a realistic glimpse into the world of private military contractors. The real work and training are about as glamorous as the reality for regular military service (except those at the Hillcroft Group get better food from the chow hall). Bo and Leighton are sexy not because of what they do, but because of who they are. Individually, they may be stumbling through new phases of their lives, but together, it's clear that they have the potential to build something meaningful. If, of course, Bo's past doesn't catch up to him, and Leighton is ever willing to face his future. This story ends on an emotional and mental cliffhanger rather than a physical one, but as usual, Dee invites such investment in her characters that I'm already counting down the days to the second half of this unique romance.
