Winifred Darling mum asks her to be the maid of honour at Tracy’s sixth wedding, she’s shocked and wants to stop her from making another mistake and getting her feelings hurt. Fred likes men and she dates on Tinder and she doesn’t want to develop feelings for any guy or believe in love and finding your soulmate and all that rubbish.
When they arrive on the island where the lovebirds have decided to hold a small and intimate family wedding, Fred’s delighted to discover the groom Paul’s son Leo isn’t happy about the wedding either and they plan ‘Operation Break-Up’ and try to sabotage the lead up to the big day. During this time Fred and Leo get to know each other, and Fred tries to ignore how hot the teacher and musician is and she’s never met a man like Leo before. Fred’s supposed to be writing her debut novel called 21 Rules for Not Catching Feelings and instead she’s either thinking about Leo or trying to keep her hands off him and maybe she’s going crazy due to the lack of sleep.
I received a copy of The Bad Bridesmaid from NetGalley and Penguin Random House Australia in exchange for an honest review. Rachael Johns is the queen of romance and romcom in Australia, she has prefect timing, touch, delivery and I wonder if she’s ever considered being a stand-up comedian?
A story full of wonderful and diverse characters, Fred and her brother Waylen and his partner Benji, Tracy and Paul’s family including his two daughters Scarlett and Juliet, son-in-law's, grandchildren and Leo. I remember Fred from The Other Bridget and her bestie Bree and numerous workmates and members of the Fremantle library.
A narrative about love and rushing to the altar and when is it too soon to remarry? You do consider how the adult children would feel about the situation, and society and most of us do judge anyone who’s been married more than twice. History and secrets, chemistry and longing and for Fred is it too late for her to change her mind about love, the nuptials and Leo? The Bad Bridesmaid is a must read, I highly recommend it if you want to laugh out loud and try not to snort while doing so and five pink stars from me.

We met Winifred Darling, Fred in The Other Bridget Jones, which I loved and now Fred who does not believe in love at all and who is writing a book called 21 Rules For Not Catching Feelings has just been asked to be maid of honour at her mother’s sixth wedding to say she is not happy is beyond belief but when an all expenses trip to Norfolk Island is offered by her soon to be new step father and her mother so badly wants her there she decides that it will be a good break to write over the week, we will see.
Always on the lookout for good looking men Fred spies a very handsome one at the airport and nick names him hot-muso and is shocked to find out when they arrive at the resort that he is going to be her new step-brother, Leo but getting to know him they realise that neither of them are keen on this marriage and set a up “operation Break-up” to stop the wedding at least for the time being, will they succeed?
The only problem is that the more time they spend together creating plans the more time that the feelings neither were looking for grow and OMG is Fred starting to break her 21 rules of catching feelings? Leo and Fred live on opposite sides of the world and both have very different thoughts on love and what it brings could there be a chance that together they can work through Fred’s rules?
I did love this one and Leo he is the best and of course Fred how can you not love Fred, this one made me laugh, smile and sigh as the things that happen on Norfolk Island cause dramas throughout the two families the setting is beautiful and the many characters from each family are wonderful, this is one that I highly recommend, make time for reading because you will not want to put it down after you pick it up.

We first met Winifred - Fred - in Johns' previous novel The Other Bridget. Fred is a librarian and an aspiring writer. Her current writing project is "21 Ways to Not Catch Feelings".
One of the upsides of having read lots of books is that I can tell pretty early in my reading journey if a book has the potential to be a 5-star read. It was the case with The Bad Bridesmaid. When I heard the sentence "as long as he's not reading 12 Rules for Life" - I was all in, because I'm judgy and prejudiced like that, just in case you were under the false impression that I was perfect. lolz
I quite liked Fred. She's different, a serial dater who doesn't believe in love, let alone relationships. You'd understand why she's like that when you hear her mum was married five times! To Fred's incredulity, her mum announces she's marrying again, and pretty soon, and the wedding will be on Norfolk Island. (The island is an external territory of Australia in the Pacific Ocean.)
Under duress, Fred agrees to be a bridesmaid. She's convinced her mum has fallen for yet another deadbeat man. She'll do all she can to ruin her mum's plans.
On Norfolk, Fred and her brother meet Paul, the groom-to-be, and his children and grandchildren, who made the long trip from England. One of them is gorgeous Leo, who'll be the best man. Fred and Leo's attraction to each other is palpable. She's a commitment-phobic, he prefers to have sex while in a committed relationship. What a shame! They concoct a plan to stop or at least delay the wedding. Will they succeed?

I loved many things about this novel. It's light but it also had a few serious topics. Fred was an opinionated, go-getter, I liked her a lot. Leo was so dreamy - arguably too good to be true, but yum.
I even noticed that Johns wasn't all gushy about Norfolk Island, she mentioned both its beauty and less desirable features. (I'll probably never make it there, it's so far from Perth).
This novel had lots of elements that kept me turning the pages. It's my favourite Johns novel, so far anyway.
Somebody grab the screen rights, this has all the ingredients of a great rom-com movie.

As always, another winner from this author. If you've read 'The Other Bridget' you'll find Fred a familiar face but if you haven't that's okay as this can be read as a standalone. Even though the topics can be serious (come on, trying to break up your own mum's wedding is a bit rough... but in all realness, there is some childhood trauma and grief featured in the storyline), the story has a light-hearted feel and is super easy to read. It's always good to read a book where basically every character is likeable and the location sounded lovely. With a perfect romcom vibe, Fred is busy trying to write a book about not catching feelings while she is in fact herself catching feelings but doesn't want to acknowledge that.
Overall: happily and highly recommend!

👰I listened to this January 2025 release on Borrow Box, which was narrated by Maddy Withington, a narrator I loved and will be seeking out more audiobooks in the future with her attached narration. From the beginning I felt that The Bad Bridesmaid offered high entertainment value and I was soon wrapped up in the events and lives of the cast of this Rachael Johns release. I have to say I really love the eventful, somewhat resistant and progressive road to love. There were many messy moments, romantic situations, problems to overcome and entertaining family politics thrown in the mix. The final result was well worth the agony experienced by the protagonists on their pathway to true love. There were also some beautiful take away messages about the nature of love and how it looks for you when you least expect or even want it!
👰Cast wise, both male and female leads had fascinating careers. I loved getting to know Fred and was with her all the way as she pursued her writing dreams. Johns weaves this aspect through the story perfectly, working to offset the family stresses and issues surrounding the upcoming marriage.
Likewise, I found Leo a man full of talents and I’m not surprised that Winifred who was sworn off relationships found herself utterly taken by this man. Johns interchanges the burgeoning relationship of Winifred and Leo with the excitement of the wedding plans of Winifred’s mother and Leo’s father. For anyone who loves a good wedding story this one has it all!
The Norfolk Island setting definitely stole the show for me. I haven’t read anything set in this part of the world and I do find it quite a mysterious place full of secrets and many special quirks to tell. It definitely offered me a spot of armchair travel which I love! Johns made sure that the setting felt realistic to the reader and I came away feeling like I gleaned a lot more about this previously unknown locale. It really was a highlight.
With themes of expectations, parenting, strained family relationships, trust, vulnerability, personal exploration, undeniable attraction, connections, unions, blended families, self-discovery, ambition, morals, friendships, growth, love, second chances, travel and surrendering everything for the sake of love. There was so much to embrace that this was an easy 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟five star read!

It can be read as a standalone as it’s loosely linked but to get the best reading experience, I suggest you read Bridget first, also it’s a fantastic book too.
A delightful, humorous and heartwarming tale about weddings, love, friendship and matters of the heart.
As the story begins we catch up with Winifred Darling aka Fred and see how life is going for her.
One day Fred gets a call from her mother announcing she is getting married for the sixth time and wants Fred to be her maid of honour.
A destination wedding is confirmed but Fred is apprehensive.
As a soon to author for a book about “not falling in love” and knowing what her mother is like, Fred will do whatever it takes to stop the nuptials.
With the help of handsome Leo, the groom’s son who feels the same way, they set out to create chaos.
But feelings erupt and Fred soon has to rethink her beliefs…..
Rachael continues her reign as a successful, memorable romcom author and I found this book charming, comforting and entertaining.
A stand out for me was TJ, the little girl with sass and attitude and her one liners made me laugh out loud.
And my final word is….. The nineties remake of The Parent Trap is a great film.

The best laugh out loud moments I've had in so long while reading this book! What an absolute gem! 💎 A reverse parent trap situation that was done perfectly 👌 (Have you ever watched The Parent Trap movie? Soo good!) and who doesn't love a friends to lovers trope right?!
I also loved the setting on Norfolk Island, the landscape and the people and have now added it to my bucket list of places to visit!

The Bad Bridesmaid is a cute fun romcom about a girl (Winifred - Fred for short) who doesn’t believe in love - insert: serial dater with no commitment. In fact, she’s in the process of writing a book, ‘21 Rules for Not Catching Feelings’. Her mother is getting married for the 6th time up on Norfolk Island and, of course, she’s been asked to be the bridesmaid. What could go wrong? In this funny tale ... absolutely everything!
‘... she wants me to be her bridesmaid, or rather her maid of honour.’ ‘Excuse me?’ It’s clear by the expression on Bee’s face that she doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Xavier laughs. ‘You’d make a very bad bridesmaid.’
There is a cast of sensational characters from immediate family to step family and the residents of Norfolk Island. Fred and her soon to be step brother (insert gorgeous man) team up for ‘Operation Break Up’ in an attempt to prevent their respective parents from making a terrible mistake. This is of course where everything starts to go pear shaped but very amusingly so. I must also add here that this is a huge plug for travelling to Norfolk Island with loads of interesting information.

I liked the close to home Perth references, but otherwise I wasn’t the biggest fan of this one. Fred was frustrating her back flipping about love was somewhat insulting to people who really feel that way. She lacked conviction when what she’d needed the whole time was proper therapy, not to write a book that’s anti love. I’m glad she got her happy ending, but I don’t really like her as a character.
It was nice to catch up with Bridget and Sully though.

I really liked Fred in The Other Bridget and worried she came off as a bit arrogant and snarky when we first meet her here, but it's probably more reflective of her personality. She's confident in her looks and sexuality and doesn't really seem to carry any baggage relating to self-worth - with which many of us grapple. She believes she's deserving of love, she just doesn't believe in it or that it lasts.
I enjoyed this so much more than I expected and part of that is the characters and a mix of their likeability and realness, thanks to Johns's talent with dialogue and storytelling. The other thing that surprised me was that I got completely wrapped up in the non-romance plot. It's set on Norfolk Island and Johns inflects a lot of local flavour which had me intrigued.

I enjoyed this so much more than I expected and part of that is the characters and a mix of their likeability and realness, thanks to Johns's talent with dialogue and storytelling. The other thing that surprised me was that I got completely wrapped up in the non-romance plot. 2. Damn it, Mum! Are you engaged AGAIN? Don't you ever learn? I REALLY don't want to pick up the pieces AGAIN. I mean, I only want to protect you from being hurt!!

4. Okay, you're offering a week long holiday in Norfolk Island. I suppose it's the perfect opportunity for a writing retreat. Let's go, I suppose.

Paul's family may be off the kilter, but damn, they absolutely adore each other. Total contrast to the dynamic Fred has with her mother and big brother.

This was cute and quirky! Very cozy to read. I love the Aussie culture shining through.
I loved that we got a glimpse into B and Sully too :3
After reading Clem Ford, I found it hard to feel satisfied with what FMC ends up doing. She is posed as being anti relationship because she was broken by a SA in her teen years… and then she literally says to the MMC “you complete me… I was empty before” NO. noooooo. A woman anti-marriage and anti-babies would never utter that ☹️

Sorry, I couldn't find any redeeming features of the main character to warrant continuing with the book. only made it to chapter 5, before putting it down.

I am in the minority but I really didn't like this
Fred drove me absolutely insane she was so holier than thou because she didn't believe in love it really grated on me. She was so condescending towards her mother, and decided she knew best rather than listening. The whole scheme to try and break her Mum up was ridiculous and really pissed me off
And I didn't like Leo either he was another condescending know it all
And I really hated the ending. Its a romance so I knew it would end this way but after building Fred up to be this "feminist" suddenly in the end she's willing to leave everything to move in with this guy? It didn't ring true for me and again really annoyed me

I loved The Other Bridget and was super excited for the sequel! A mum getting married for the 6th time? A romcom about a girl who doesn’t believe in love? What a premise!!! Fred is a delight, I loved armchair travelling to Norfolk Island for a destination wedding!!

Summed Up: Sassy Rom-Com With A Twist

Earlier this year, I read The Other Bridget by Rachael Johns and it became one of those rare books I couldn’t stop thinking about after finishing. I even had review regret, wishing I’d rated it 5 stars. Naturally, I was excited to dive into the follow up - The Bad Bridesmaid.
This novel had the same easy to read writing style, cute rom-com vibes, was packed with pop culture and bookish references plus funny one liners. I especially enjoyed the updates on characters from the earlier book, those little connections were a fun touch.
However the main plot didn’t work as well for me. The romance storyline was sweet but it centered around two people at a wedding who ❗️spoiler alert ❗️would become step-siblings when their parents marry. While this might not bother every reader it gave me major ick vibes and made it hard to be happy for their happy ending.
The main character was bold, sassy, chaotic and unapologetically herself, but holy moly.. she was also very horny.
Rom-coms aren’t my go to genre and smut isn’t really my thing, so I recommend taking this review with that perspective in mind. You’re going to enjoy this if you’re into bold characters, cheeky humour and don’t mind a somewhat unconventional romance ♥️

Winifred can't help but be skeptical when she is asked to be maid of honour at her mother's sixth wedding. When she finds an ally in the groom's son, Leo, they together plot to stop the wedding.
Rachael Johns' writing is such a joy to read. Combining a fantastic storyline with romance and laugh out loud moments is always a winner in my books and this one had all this. I cheered, I swooned and I laughed. Such a fun book.

The super sassy Fred heads to her mums sixth wedding and she’s not impressed at all! During the week of the wedding, Fred meets her new step father’s children and grandchildren. Spunky Leo catches her eye, and as they get to know each other, they both agree they need to stop this wedding!
These two are super cute together, loved their instant connection and conversations about their past. As we all know, Fred doesn’t get attached so it’s interesting to see how this goes! I enjoyed the families getting to know each other, and the locals all helping out too.
I also loved learning more about Norfolk Island as well, as it’s a place I’d love to visit one day.
I don’t want to say too much, but my goodness so many things happen in the lead up to this wedding! It’s one crazy ride that’s for sure!

I’m a BIG fan of Rachael Johns and I loved ‘The Other Bridget’. The Bad Bridesmaid delivers another good book from Johns - it comes with intriguing characters and a solid plot with a range of supporting subplots and twists.
The book itself delves more into Fred - who was the ‘anti’ romance best friend from The Other Bridget. I really enjoyed learning more about Fred and what makes her tick, and this was probably the best part of the book. Not only do you get to explore a character that is very clear in her views, but there is a strong relatability to her commitment to not being hurt.
The setting of Norfolk Island read like a travel guide - not only was it a master class in setting a scene, but it showcased how location + characters will help drive plot without over reliance or use of explanatory/convenient and unrealistic dialogue.
A fun novel from Johns that needs to be on your ‘want to read’ list.
I’m unsure if there will be more from this Fremantle work, but if there is I will be eagerly awaiting the next.

Oh dear sweet lord, I do love a straightforward commercial page turner of a romance book. Lovely writing, likeable characters, barely any sad bits, happy ending.
I just love love love when writing is uncomplicated, with no weird subtext, the main character is not super neurotic, and the story moves you from point A to point B. Better yet if you feel as though you’ve been on a little holiday to Norfolk Island by the end of the book.
I will definitely be reading more from Rachael as an antidote to all the other books I think I should read but provide a far less enjoyable reading experience.

The Bad Bridesmaid is such a good read. I connected with Fred from the very first page and loved the journey she went on... not just to Norfolk Island, but her own personal one.
There's plenty of laugh out loud moments, but it has depth as well, as you discover the reasons why Fred doesnt believe in love, and why her mum is heading down the aisle for the sixth time.
I loved seeing Norfolk Island through Fred's eyes... and I also loved seeing Leo through Fred's eyes. Their banter was fun and really showed the chemistry between them.
There's references to The Other Bridget but you can read this as a stand alone.

Another sequel I wanted to love that just didn't get there for me. I loved The Other Bridget and really liked Fred there as a character but for the first 70% of the book all I could think was FFS Grow Up! The entitlement, the holier-than-though, I know better than anyone attitude of Fred just grated on me When the inevitable finally happened I just didn't care. Maybe I just need to lower my expectations on follow up books?

Okay I loved the book and it’s content but I found the constant bad talking about Norfolk Island really baffling? Like there was way more chat about how it was rinky dink and like “do they even” than how gorgeous it was? So even tho I really enjoyed the plot I couldn’t help but be a bit annoyed every time one of those bits came up which seemed like a lot 🤷🏼♀️
