The Titan's Debt: A Mirielle Laurant Thriller

Rate this book
Beneath every origin story lies a version someone paid to bury.

Mirielle Laurant—brilliant financial researcher with a sixth sense for deception—knows the official tale of Kidemonas garage prodigies, genius code, global domination. Clean. Heroic. Sanitized. But then she spots the crack—a minor discrepancy that should’ve been nothing.

Still reeling from her husband’s murder and armed with grief, razor instincts, and a deep distrust of clean narratives, Mirielle assembles a quiet task Harriet Godwin, a forensic-minded researcher with a vicious eye for data; Ivy Choate, a rookie reporter whose ambition outruns her access; and Joe Pulver, a retired CIA analyst who never really retired.

What begins as a financial anomaly spirals into something far darker—a decades-old crime, expertly buried and ruthlessly protected. And with Kidemonas on the brink of launching the world’s first Artificial General Intelligence, the stakes shift from reputational ruin to global risk.

Mirielle isn’t just chasing the truth. She’s dodging surveillance, confronting ghosts, and betting everything on the one thing they never saw her.

They built something too big to fail. She’s about to prove them wrong.

The Titan’s Debt is a gripping mystery-thriller where buried secrets, corrupt power, and the ominous rise of AI collide—crafted for readers who relish the tension of Baldacci and the depth of Larsson.

The Titan’s Debt is one of the most propulsive books I’ve read in quite some time.

Mirielle Laurant is relentless in her pursuit of justice. Currently, she has the head of the company Kidemonas in her cross hairs. Their unrestrained development of an AI network is beyond scary. With no commitment to ethics involved in the development, the program is close to going rogue. Laurant and her small team are willing to go all out to prevent the launch of this world-altering Artificial General Intelligence. But the men behind Kidemonas are ruthless, and will stop at nothing to succeed.

The characters are relatable and the plot is so appropriate to today, it will send chills down your spine.
Explosive, and so believable, the reader will not want to put this book down. It’s beyond good. I consumed it and want to get my hands on the next book in the series.

This new book by H.N. Wake is a real page turner. I think it took me just 2 days to finish. The titular character, Mireille Laurant, is a smart, brave, flawed woman. Through all her life's tragedies she has come out the other side stronger and richer. The story, with it's financal and AI themes, is suspenseful and fast paced. I can't wait for the next book in this new series, Lost Son.

If you like complex plots, The Titan's Debt: A Mirielle Laurant Thriller has it in spades. Mirielle Laurant is the widow of an FBI agent; her mission in this story is to shut down a tech company that she believes is unethical. She recruits a team of diverse, highly qualified colleagues to research with the intent to take down a financial giant. Mirielle Laurant is good at what she does. Very, very good.

H.N. Wake has created a saga that is almost too dreadful to imagine. Remember Hal? 2001: A Space Odyssey? That’s what I kept thinking of. But this is worse. This book has corrupted men developing Artificial Intelligence. There are many questions: What happens if AI escapes? Will the missing pieces to the puzzle fall into place so that Mirielle’s Ravaler Research team can succeed in time? Or will Kidemonas prevail? And if they do, can they control their AI? The Titan's Debt: A Mirielle Laurant Thriller will keep you riveted to until the very end.

Intoducing Mirelle Laurent head of a firm called Ravaler Research - a stock trading firm, along with an introduction to the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mirelle previously investigated an online marketing firm where their stock values soared but there was something amiss. Once she was able to prove they were fraudulent she took a huge risk shorting their stock, until eventually her knowledge of their fraud brought them down making her a handsome profit along the way. Mirelle has since been investigating another highflyer this time, a large tech company moving into the development area of AI where there appears to be inconsistencies in their methods of operation and the past of the principals.
A young journalist co-operates with the Ravaler team bringing her investigative skills to Mirelle, and when dirty washing of the management team in the tech company comes to light this makes for a fast paced read with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Recommended as a hard to put down story.

Good start to a new series.
There’s lots to like, with a trademark cast of strong women, a ticking clock deadline to ratchet up the tension, and some well-presented explanations about AI (i.e. accessible to non-techie readers).
Mirielle is a math wizard, whose self-belief in her ability, coupled with hard work and razor-sharp attention to detail, enabled her to short sell a defrauding company to its demise, giving her a legendary status in the industry and a nest egg with which to go after other companies operating unethically. This time she’s closing in on a leading AI company, the co-founders of which have suspiciously minimal publicly available history. She hires Harriet straight out of college to dig deeper into their past. Meanwhile, investigative journalist Ivy, recognising Mirielle attending a presentation from one of the co-founders, smells a bigger story than the “AI for dummies” one that she was planning. These two strands eventually intertwine, by way of sickening revelations about the co-founders, terrifying projections for the autonomy of the company’s AI algorithm, and actual threats to Mirielle and Harriet.
The author reveals tantalisiing hints to Mirielle’s past, brings in the wonderful Leah Peck from one of her other series, and sets up a story arc related to the open case of the death of Mirielle’s FBI agent husband that will clearly span several future books in the series.
There were occasions when the action was almost too speedy, when a few additional sentences would have helped bridge the sequences better. But this is a minor quibble when the bulk of the book is so compelling and assured.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow - great thriller!

A fantastic chilling, yet informative and haunting thriller that I could not put down. It is a real eye opener for the possible future direction of AI. A book that keeps you engaged while reading and thinking of the implications of AI long after you finish the book. I highly recommend this book.

I read this book as part of an advance reader team and am voluntarily writing this review.

The Titan's Debt: A Mirielle Laurant Thriller, my first enjoyable read from author H.N. Wake. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Lost Son: A Mirielle Laurant Thriller due out on March 20 of this year. Enjoyable read!

I enjoyed this book. It took me a bit to get into it but I think it got better and better as it progressed. I learned a fair amount about short selling and AI from reading it as well.
