Daniel: A Short Story

Rate this book
Detective Daniel Hartwell followed his captain into her office and stood before her desk as she rounded it. Confidently, she pushed a file across the desk. "Your first assignment. A murder at the docks last night. The vic is a John Doe, but we have a witness. Name's Elena Bixby."

Daniel flipped open the file, his heart racing with anticipation. The photo of a beautiful, full-figured woman with dark hair, dark almond-shaped eyes and the complexion of the same café au lait lingering in his nostrils stared back at him. Elena, who was a waitress at a nearby café, had seen the murder and reported it. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement at the thought of meeting her.

“I’m on it, ma’am.”

Elena reached out and took his hand, her touch sending an electric current through him. "But you're more than just a detective to me, Daniel," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're the only one who understands what I've been through."

Daniel's heart thudded in his chest, his professional facade threatening to crack. He squeezed her hand gently, feeling the warmth of her skin against his. "I'm here for you," he assured her, his voice thick with emotion. "Always."

Elena nodded her head. Reluctantly, she watched him go, her hands clutching the edge of the kitchen counter, her knuckles white. She knew the risks involved, but she couldn't help the feeling of comfort that washed over her when he was near. It was dangerous, she knew, but she couldn't ignore the way her heart raced at the sight of him, the way she felt protected when he was around. Deep inside her heart of hearts, she didn't want to him to leave, ever.
