This is an absorbing collection of eleven powerful, well-researched short stories, all worth reading. Cockburn has a keen eye for detail and is adept at exploring his main characters’ inner conflicts. Among my favorites are “The Endocrine Tyranny,” where a man tries to save the woman he loves from the effects of an experimental operation, and “Coldwater Cottage,” in which a scuba diver literally plunges into unresolved conflicts with his deceased parents. “Rainfall by Night” is an interesting portrayal of what happens when an isolated young woman suddenly acquires power in a post-apocalyptic setting. “Summer Holidays” is an engaging twist on a boy learning about women. Clever and thought-provoking, this book deserves to be read and talked about.
