DI John Hunter believes he’s seen every kind of weird murder, but a dead extra-terrestrial who is also a senior government minister has got to be a first. Like all ministers, Sir Duncan received many death threats, and one reads, ‘Death to all aliens’.Special Branch starts breathing down John’s neck, determined to take the case from him, but the Prime Minister overrules them. He has his own agenda. The minister had two phones and one of them was used to contact just seven men, ostensibly his shooting friends. One of those men, a highly regarded deputy headmaster, is murdered by the same bizarre method.Another of Sir Duncan’s contacts was the ‘Church of Pure Humanity’, and there John and his wife meet Sir Carol and Eleanor Smeeth, their four daughters and Tarsa, an ex police officer and the family ‘guard dog’ and listen to a lecture by Michael Brane, who advocates, ‘Death to all aliens’.The murders of men on the list continue until there are just two names left of men who are still alive.Jane is kidnapped, and John is told he must drop the case or she will die. Believing he has the answer he sets a trap, expecting to catch Eleanor Smeeth or Tarsa, but finds he has been wrong all along. The killer is someone else; someone who has the best of reasons for the murders.Smeeth commits suicide, leaving a note confessing that he was responsible for all the deaths. It ties everything up neatly, but John knows it is a lie…
