Most people believe that sags, bags, and wrinkles –– on the face and body –– are inevitable. many people choose to temporarily circumvent these signs of aging with surgery, chemical peels, Botox injections, or laser treatments. The good news, according to research scientist and practicing dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, M.D., is that by following a simple program of diet, exercise, and skin care you can prevent and even reverse many signs of aging.
The Perricone Prescription clearly and succinctly explains the rock–solid laboratory research behind Dr. Perricone's revolutionary theories, revealing that inflammation at the cellular level, precipitated by poor nutrition, pollution, sunlight, irritating skin–care treatments, and stress, is the single most powerful cause of the signs of aging. Dr. Perricone gives you the knowledge and the tools to fight that inflammation from the inside out, while at the same time decreasing the likelihood of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and a host of other degenerative diseases.
There is SO much information in this book. Good information, but it's overwhelming. A lot of what's included here makes sense and I'm excited to try to make some of these changes. However, I can't imagine putting all of this together for a complete plan, and I didn't see anywhere in the book where it does that for you. Yes, there are meal plans and recipes, which are great. However, the author discusses many, many, many supplements and their benefits. I'm not much of a believer in supplements in the first place, but I really find it hard to imagine that if a person is eating a healthy, well-balanced, whole-food diet that s/he could possibly need that many supplements.
Perricone fits the ideologue version of what a good body & skin technician should be. He offers a mechanical procedure by which people can attain what is both normal, natural, optimal and good. The assumption that the cultural significations of youth are what the body would tend towards if left on its own motions forms the basis of this anti-drug 100% pure good. It is of course, unlikely that this narrow regiment of diet and exercise can provide such wonderous results that is everything people would find both bodily and culturally optimal.
Whenever you read upon any text that offers an approach to a 100% signifier-signified effect that has no risk you know that you are in the presence of ideology. Ideology will always appear to be in the direction of all that is good and true because ideology is among many things, mostly a directional vector for organizing human production... and Perricone does push that procedure quite well.
His writing even sounds like a patient, caring doctor. He is enthusiastic, but in a restrained way. His writing is clear, rational and measured. He is scientific without being jargony and medical without being dogmatic. This is a well written book.
I do find it amusing how in the comments people argue or find incredulous some of his remarks. What do they know about medicine or health? He's a doctor!
Over 25 years ago I was at the gym in the sauna when a girl walked in and began talking about this book and how it had changed her life in such a positive way. She looked at least ten to fifteen years younger than the age she was.
She talked so positively about this book that I immediately purchased it and began following Dr Perricone’s advice!
I have read a lot of books, but I can honestly say that this book is one of the most life changing books I have ever read that has had the most impact on my life and health.
I follow this about 80% of the time, however, actually I feel the difference when I make an attempt to follow his recommended 3 day or 28 day diets more closely.
He gives great lists for what to eat and what not to eat.
I have read every book Dr. Perricone has written and I enjoyed them all, this one included. After you read enough of them the information really overlaps but I just keep on with them! It’s packed with such great info and scientific backing and explanations. If your into skin care and anti aging I definitely recommend. P.s his books are to the point not fluffy
Urges low-sugar/refined carbs, no coffee but green tea. Urges salmon (which I haven't had in a while) as the top protein. Also promotes virgin olive oil as a health food, but that way of thinking is changing lately, isn't it, from when this was released in 2002? Perricone states that healthy diet is the best anti-aging tool, and talks about different food's effects. He strongly recommends supplements as necessary but I've heard a good diet is all a person needs until they're old. He's very knowledgeable and explains all the topical vitamins and ingredients for good skin. He talks about exercise (even just a brisk walk), sleep, and the Perricone 28-day wrinkle-free program, which is basically about all these things but mostly diet (protein with every meal) and washing the face. Lots of before and after pics.
I bought this book when it first came out. It's definitely a good go to reference book that you would want keep on your bookshelf. Its not a diet book, it's a lifestyle that's simple and basic on eating real foods. As a clinical nutritional counselor and an aesthetician I can say the recommendations can help with weight and skin. Even if you added just one thing to your life at a time, it can bring a good result. Of course always check with you doctor because supplements can interact with medications etc.
this book's pretty interesting..perricone tried to tell us that aging is a choice, and the control is in our hand. he prescribed us the best diets, suplements, and exercises to slow the aging and to have healthier and happier life.. for the diets, perricone prescribed that fish, esp. SALMON is the best anti-aging diet! High protein diet is highly recomended, fat is not something to be avoided (cz the body needs it), and watch out for the SUGARY food (including rice, bread, etc)!!
Read this on an assignment and not of my own volition. Basically: eat lots of salmon and buy Perricone products and you just might live forever. I think I'll just get wrinkly and die according to the originally scheduled program, thanks.
I am trying to live by this right now. I have had it for a couple years now and pull it out every now and then. I have a wedding on April 10th so this is my goal! I agree with pretty much everything he recommends. I have seen a difference when I have followed it before.
focus on food, 8water protein first 3meals/2snacks, salmon eggs sardines oatmeal broccoli berries green apples nuts, anti-inflammatory, vitaminC for sunburn, olive oil skin.
