"Fatal Greed" by John W. Mefford is the first book in his "Greed" series.
IT Manager Michael Doyle fears for his job when he learns that his employer is merging with an international corporation. Little did he know that this would be the last thing on his mind once he stumbles upon a mutilated body behind the building he works in. One of his friends and co-workers has been arrested for the murder and Michael takes it upon himself to get to the truth. His investigation leads him into a world filled with greed, suspense and mystery.
A great storyline with interesting characters, enough action and excitement and a satisfying ending makes you want to carry on with the next book without delay.

This book had me on the edge of my seat. Well, a couple of chapters in it did. At first, it was a little frustrating and I just did not like the main character, Michael Doyle. He came across as a real wimp and I just could not see what was so interesting about him that I wanted to read a full story about him - parts of it is from his point of view. It took me a couple of days just to get through the first six chapters, which is very unusual for me. Not being able to just give up on a book, I continued on.

Once the other stories started to come in and you could see how they were linked together in unexpected ways, I didn't want to put it down. In fact, I read from chapter ten until the end in one night, not wanting to go to sleep until the whole story was complete. Michael stops becoming a drip after a friend of his is put into jail, and he starts working with the newspaper to find out what really is going on.

The last couple of chapters, when things become seriously dangerous, were action packed and exciting. I came to really like Michael - and was quite intrigued by the bad guy (I won't tell you who that is because it'll give things away).

Some of the writing is choppy, and the end seemed a little too easy, but all-in-all it's a good book and I can't wait to read #2.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Please remember that this review is my opinion based on my personal impressions of the book.

Greed book #1

Something fishy is going on with this deal …does anyone knows the true intent of a corporate takeover? When a technology giant swallows up a private company for one the thought of layoffs comes to mind.

Michael Doyle a mid-level management is sure that he and many of his friends will lose their jobs when the top brass announces they have sold out to an international conglomerate. But his self-pity is cut short when he discovers the dismembered body of a co-worker, this gruesome murder gave him purpose to investigate the whodunit and the why.

This a deeply compelling crime drama that chronicles the live of Michael who finds himself on the corporate’s chopping blocks. The plot has a bit of everything: suspense, mystery, adventure, sex, love, corporate power, personal needs, murder, backstabbing, mischief, etc. and is masterfully created to hold our attention throughout. It mainly centers around a corporate sale and on the level of greed necessary to satisfy each personal goal. The author paints a bleak picture with a realistic touch of what could happen to anyone these days.

Lots of suspense builds up while trying to find who is behind the gruesome murder. This fast-paces edge of your seat mystery held my attention captive from page one till I reach the conclusion. I simply couldn’t put the book down and read it in two settings. Another well- written story played out by great characters.

Smooth style, easy to read and a unique storyline, what is not to like.

I began reading it and couldn't put it down. It's like being on thrill ride where you slowly reach the peak and all hell breaks loose as you descend at breakneck speed through hills and valleys and twists and turns until you breathlessly reach the end. Interesting characters and situations and engaging plot that begins as a routine corporate takeover and morphs into something much more sinister. I highly recommend Fatal Greed and look forward to the next installment.

John W. Mefford’s Fatal Greed offers a complex blend of raw sensuality, sharp violence, mystery, and even occasional unexpected godliness, all packaged around a seemingly meaningless murder. Corporate greed forms the background, with characters innocent and guilty drawn into a murderous web. The protagonist, with his job under threat and his girlfriend looking for commitment (possibly another threat), soon finds himself following the threads of loose ends, while some relationships fall apart and others draw ever tighter. Ecological, financial, social, emotional and corporate greed all claim their due. But one fatality points the way to truth.

The protagonist’s voice, humor and depth all feel pleasingly real. Fatal Greed is an adult novel, a fascinating puzzle, and a really good read.

Disclosure: I won a copy and I’m pleased to offer my honest review.

I downloaded this a long time ago, I think on one of those free first book/preview things. Started reading it for the 2023 TBR challenge but I... don't really like it for obscure reasons. I feel like the best I can describe why is the weird Male Gaze POV is irritating me.

I wasn't too sure how I was going to like this book. It's not something I would typically read or be interested in but I liked it. The characters were complex and some were even like-able. John Mefford has a unique way of writing that turned something I would normally not like into something that managed to grab my interest in chapter one.

Michael was a man that was afraid of commitment. He lived a normal life with a beautiful woman that adored him, until the day he learns the CEO's of his company sold out and the company was merging with some big wig company. Then Michael finds a dead body in the dumpster, the secretary of the company. He starts digging into the young woman's murder to help the local newspaper. Will he find out more than he should and put not only himself but the woman he loves into jeopardy?

I loved Marisa and Michael together, they were oddly good together. Even though he wasn't a commitment guy at first he still loved her and they lived together. They were perfect for each other and it showed through Mefford's writing. I look for romance in every book I read so I was glad this had a little romance to it.

I'm not going to lie, even though this book got my interest early on, it almost lost it a couple of times. I thought it took a little too long before he found Tiffany's body. Then the whole middle of the book was kind of dull to me, thankfully it picked up around 65% through. It was almost like a roller coaster ride, it had my interest and then it lost, then it had it again and then it lost it and then it had it again and then it was over.

The ending was great! Other than Chucks part, I know this is a series so some things have to end that way but I always hate cliffhanger endings. Not sure if you can call that a cliffhanger though...I hate loose ends not being tied by the end of the book.

WHAT WON’T GREED MAKE YOU DO!

I love John Mefford’s books and I think I’ve read almost all of them. This book is no exception. It’s a prime example of what the high corporate officers will do to make themselves richer. When money and the chance of making more and more of it enters the picture, most people will do just about anything to get the big payoff. This book is an excellent example of how they do it and there’s a lot of excitement along the way. John has done an excellent job with all the characters and has fleshed them all out really well. The roller coaster ride you go on with this book is definitely thrilling. You will be on the edge of your seat for most of this book and reading late into the night. I loved it and highly recommend it. Start this series today!

"Nothing visible to the public eye."
Mr.Mefford has decided to republish all of his books, starting with this, the first in his Greed series. I have very much enjoyed a large number of works but this is a new series for me. What a treat. His characters are always well developed, sometimes quirky, sometimes just a little bit accident prone but always real people. And the scenarios are always very atmospheric, with a weak of humour to lighten the tension.
So a good read, easy and enjoyable, recommended to all who enjoy thrillers which go beyond mere constant action. I'm looking forward to following the whole series.

This story is a 'draw the reader in' type that keeps the pages flying by. John W. Mefford has a way to write a story that gives the characters their own lives and have the reader wondering where it is actually headed. An awesome thriller that is John's 'trademark'. I have read many of his books and am NEVER disappointed in them. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I really liked this book! The characters were interesting and it kept me reading well into the night. I did not realize that this story had been rewritten but since I had not read it before, I was pleasantly surprised by the story line. I felt it was well written and it had lots going on. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Murder, big company take over, reporter, bad guys---what could go wrong? Plenty. The book was interesting and the story line kept moving along. The story makes one wonder what really goes on in big companies and rich people. The reporter kept on digging and was a bulldog going after the real events, good read.

What a way to start a series! Michael, a run of the mill guy basically trips over a dead body and then we're up and running. Corruption, criminals and corporate take overs, how much is connected? Quite the page turner, I can't wait to read book 2.

Vivid Scenes

In the beginning, it was just me, my new laptop and a story swirling in my head. The narrative had minimal shape, spastic rhythm, and a smidge of substance. From a scientific perspective, this book, FATAL GREED, barely existed at all.

Fatal Greed by John W. Mefford is a 2014 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The title of this book is certainly apt. While the story does get off to slow start, you will want to stick with it.

This story is one so many can relate to. Michael Doyle is blindsided when his company is bought out and a new regime will soon be in charge. If that weren't enough to grapple with, Michael stumbles upon a the body of a young woman who worked with the company. But, it gets better. Michael's neighbor, a married man with a young family is arrested for the murder. Something in Micheal makes him want to find out the truth about this young woman's death and hopefully reunite the young family with their father .
In the background of the story is Micheal's commitment issues. He has difficulty in that department in several areas of his life, but the main problem is with his longtime girlfriend, Marisa. By all accounts the relationship is pretty solid, even though Marisa really wants him to put a ring on it.
As Michael begins digging into the murder at the request of the local newspaper, he becomes close the the deceased woman's mother, Rosemary. His work life is getting more and more murky as he becomes the hatchet man for the new boss. Between trying to solve a murder and laying off long time loyal employees and dealing with his personal life, Micheal has a lot stress in his life. But, he rises to the occasion determined to come out on the other end with his integrity it tact.

This story was all too real on so many levels. The takeover and the ruthless layoffs and greed of top management was depicted perfectly. It wouldn't surprise me if these tactics weren't practiced in real life. Why not? Maybe not with an actual murder, but all the rest of it was spot on. While this may have been just a crime story, it still left me feeling a little queasy because it was just so realistic. Yes, greed is one of the worst sins , but it is the vice which eventually causes so many downfalls. It will come back to haunt you, you can count on it. While the crime in this book is solved, the story is not finished just yet. I loved the way the story played out. Obviously the author put a great deal of thought into this one and let it all play out in real time with the characters developing as the story progresses. Marisa and Michael are a great couple and made a good team even though they went through some rough patches. I have the other book in the series all queued up and ready to go.

Favorite Quotes
“I heard the news, Michael,” Marisa said. “I’m so sorry Jeffrey and William sold out.” My shoulders sagged and my spine slumped, carving at least a couple of inches off my six-foot one-inch frame. I dropped my keys on the nearest table and put my head on Marisa’s shoulder, like an innocent child clinging to his sympathetic mother. “I know, I know.

“Oh, Doyle, you going to play that way?” She turned and wrapped one leg completely around my lower torso and kissed me passionately. She was a phenomenal kisser. Never once separating our bodies, we moved to the bed and continued our lovemaking. I gently kissed the erogenous spots across her entire body, generating goose bumps from her athletic shoulders down to her long, shapely legs. Unselfishly, she relieved my tension, and we cemented our loving bond. Spooning each other, Marisa drifted off to sleep.

Michael Doyle was an IT manager. When learning that his employer would be merging with an international corporation, all he could think about was losing his job. But for Michael losing his job would be the last thing on his mind. Especially after just finding a dead body. Will he be next? Or will he be accused of it? Only time will tell.
This is not normally my type of story. I am a romance kind of gal but when I was asked to review his series I figured I would give it a try. I am glad I did… This is a thriller story that has a greed, mystery, suspense and really excellent developed characters. There are some twists and turns. Just when you think you figured it out something else comes up. I loved the characters and their interaction with each other.

Greed is a terrible thing! This mystery/suspense novel by John W. Mefford the first in his Greed Series will take you on a journey to right several wrongs perpetrated by several very greedy individuals. They will stop at nothing to form the merger of a giant Indian company with a small North Texas oil company. Michael, a laid back kind of guy with definite commitment issues (just ask his long time girlfriend) has just found out about the merger and steps out for a breath of air where he finds someones arm sticking out of a black garbage bag. From that moment forward Michael knows he has to find the killer which for some reason is not being covered very well by the local press and one of his friends and co-worker has been arrested for the murder.

More and more strange things keep happening and Michael ends up working with the newspaper to uncover the real story. Meanwhile he and his boss have been told that they will have to fire 15% of the workforce so that the new company can make more of a profit. How this all ends--of course I can not tell you--what I will say there is a direct link to the next in the series! And yes, I really enjoyed this book-it kept me guessing and entertained and now I have to wait to get the second in this series.

I’m a fan of John Mefford so I looked forward to reading another of his books. This one didn’t disappoint me either. It’s about the corporate world and takeovers which leads into murder. There is a lot of mystery with a twisting plot and interesting characters. The main character, Michael Doyle, is well written and likable. As the takeover and layoffs begin you really feel for the guy and the name of the book is perfect for what happens.

I may have gotten the book for an honest review but another great book by author Mefford.

I have read the book again and my review changed a little but still feels like the first time.
Like all of the author’s books, you are held in suspense page after page. He has a way of grabbing your attention and keeping it till the very end. But when you are done, you just want to read more. That’s the way it has been with me from the very beginning of reading his books years ago. This book is no different. The main character Michael Doyle finds a dead body and becomes an amateur sleuth wanting to know how she was killed. He also has some issues in his personal life from the past that doesn’t let him move on with his girlfriend, Marisa. In the story, we follow Michael digging in to find the truth while working for a company who is being bought out which just didn’t seem right to him. Great book and I look forward to more in the series.

This is an awesome book. It has mystery, adventure, lies, who dunnit.....name it, it's in here. This is an adult book and for some people, there might be triggers. Please read the synopsis and warnings first. Readers safety is the most important.

Greed is exactly what this is all about. As you read this, you can see how this occurs in real life. Board members, directors, police, company heads, rich investors.....all for more, all for money. The adventure starts from a quote about greed. Chapter One: Meet Tiffany detailing her present circumstance with a man and her emotional state.(3 pages long) The detail is incredible. You feel like you are there seeing, smelling, touching and feeling what she says. The rest of the book is written with the same details and trust me, this is just the beginning to everyone's story. Chapter Two: Meet Michael. He will be the main male character unfolding the story. Marissa is his girlfriend. J&W is the company Michael works for. PCH is the company buying J&W by surprise.

Get ready for a great book. Thank you Author Mefford. This was a wonderful story to read. I cannot wait to read more.
This can be a stand alone. This is also the first book of a series. Enjoy!

Michael Doyle was an IT manager at J&W Technology Services. After learning that his employer would be merging with PHC, an international corporation, he accidentally discovers a mutilated body in the alley outside the office. The victim is a business acquaintance of his.

When his neighbor, who is also his coworker, is arrested and confesses to the murder, Michael tries to understand what is happening. With very little being published in the local newspaper, he meets with the editor, and Stu, a reporter. With their help, Michael starts finding clues. As he gets closer to solving the murder, he discovers connections to his employer’s looming merge.

This is the first book that I have read from this author. It won’t be the last. I thought it was very well written. I like that Michael new his coworker as a friend and neighbor, but found out that he really didn't know him like he thought. That is convincing because that’s how it is in real life. Just like the more he investigates, the more secrets he finds. It’s these little things that bring the characters to life, and makes them convincing.
