Now, I don’t know what I was expecting from a cozy, feel-good fantasy book pitched as “Virgin River meets The Hobbit”, but safe to say that Z.S. Diamanti absolutely knocked it out of the park (or should I say garden?) with Guard in the Garden. This is more than just a feel-good cozy fantasy; it’s a soul-stirring tale of trauma, grief, healing, self-discovery, love and found family that will make you cry tears from both sorrow and joy.
What do you do when your entire life comes crumbling down in one single moment? That’s the question elite dwarven warrior Felton Holdum is brutally faced with when his leg gets injured in battle, forcing him to retreat and recover at his quirky aunts’ home in the quiet Garome District. He is dead set on getting back in the air on a new Garhawk to defend his country as soon as possible, but try as he might, he can’t deny and resist the charm of the quaint town and its lovely inhabitants. And when his heart gets captured by an alluring sunshine woman, he starts to wonder if there might be more to life than war after all.
If all that didn’t give it away, you don’t have to come looking for epic bloody action in Guard of the Garden, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t battles to be fought. The inner turmoil, the grief over losing your past self, the trauma flashbacks, the all-consuming loneliness, the scary feeling that you have lost your entire identity in purpose in life; it is all explored so beautifully and organically through Felton’s authentic emotional journey. Even without reading the touching author’s note (which I highly recommend you do afterwards btw), it’s clear from the very first page that this story is extremely personal to Diamanti, and I guarantee that you don’t have to be an ex-veteran for this tale to hit and resonate on a deep emotional level.
But as heavy and weighty as that all sounds, Guard in the Garden never felt like an emotionally draining read to me. Especially from part 2 (titled Fall) onwards, there’s so much heart, hope, and wonder infused into this narrative, and with every new chapter I found myself smiling and swooning more and more. From all the lush nature descriptions, to all the mouthwatering baked goodies (we’ve got a pie contest!), to the forging of new friendships, and of course to all the adorable romantic shenanigans between Felton and Tilli; who knew this grumpy dwarf could be such a suave prince charming?! Seeing how they connect on a soul-deep level and help each other heal was just entirely too wholesome, and then add to that the sweet dynamic between him and Tilli’s bubbly daughter Lili… no notes, just perfection!
To me, Guard in the Garden almost feels like Legends and Lattes as if written by Robin Hobb, and somehow it just absolutely works. This is simply everything a cozy fantasy is supposed to be, and I would highly recommend it if you want to escape into a breathtakingly epic classic fantasy world to go an intimate, quiet adventure that will soothe your soul and warm your heart. Just make sure you bring some snacks and some tissues, you are going to need them.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Z.S. Diamanti has done it again! Another amazing book to add to my shelf!
Guard in the Garden is a cozy fantasy set in the vibrant and magical world of Finlestia. It follows dwarf veteran, Felton Holdum, as he navigates a new life away from battle. Felton is written in such a powerful, yet delicate, way. Watching his growth with each passing season left me feeling hopeful. You can tell Diamanti really cares about this character and that he took his time to make him feel authentic. In fact, all of the characters, old and new, are well-rounded, unique, believable, and really help bring the world to life.
Diamanti did a fantastic job of weaving fantasy with an emotional journey of healing and finding oneself. It’s obviously a story dear to his heart and that really shows. It made me smile, it made me cry, but most importantly, it made me feel good!
The world-building, pacing, and writing style of Guard in the Garden is reminiscent of classic fantasy novels that are loved by many. Diamanti’s story is beautifully written, so I have no doubt that Guard in the Garden will be one of those books that’s transcends generations!
Okay.. I loved this!! Talk about a book that knew exactly what it was, and did exactly what it was supposed do. Big kudos to the author for telling sweet, tight story with SO much heart! This is a book I could recommend to anyone - fellow fantasy readers, my kids, or my grandma! I love how he was able to tell about story about learning to live with grief, trauma, loss, night terrors, PTSD without the book ever feeling heavy or dark. So uplifting and wholesome. I loved it!
Guard in the Garden is a cozy fantasy set in deep soil. From a budding romance to the thoughtful pruning of personal loss and trauma, this book is a slice-of-life story of an airborne solider dealing with the ghosts of his past, while coming face-to-face with the inevitability of... a tortoise. Guard in the Garden is Z.S. Diamanti at his finest—pulling heartstrings while cultivating a large cast of charactes you'll quickly fall in love with through the seasons.
Cute, low stakes, and cozy. Food lovers rejoice because there is a lot of eating in this book haha!
This book is short, warm, and has a lot of adorable moments. I appreciate the representation the author brings to the struggles of returning veterans. I think he could have gone a bit deep with some of the emotional themes, but overall the book is very uplifting and I believe that’s the point.
A heartfelt cozy fantasy about healing, self-discovery, community and purpose. Felton Holdum, an accomplished dwarven warrior sidelined by injury, is sent to recover in the peaceful Garome District, where he struggles with his lost identity. Felton slowly and reluctantly embraces a new way of life and his priorities, along with his sense of self, begin to change. Drawing from his own experience as a veteran, Diamanti crafts a touching story of transition and renewal, perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes and the cozy fantasy sub genre.
A beautifully sweet story with a strongly beating heart and carefully woven message, this was a hopeful and cozy palate cleanser between a lot of really serious stories.
I absolutely adored this book! This is a cozy fantasy to its very core.
This book embodies "high fantasy, low stakes", and I absolutely adored seeing our main character heal through love and community. Knowing that this book was written by a war veteran, also makes it so much more impactful!
I have read countless "cozy fantasy" books, looking to repeat the feelings Legends & Lattes gave me. This is the closest I've gotten so far!
This was such a sweet, gentle read! I really enjoyed watching the characters learn to love and heal together. One of my first cozy fantasies, but it won’t be my last!
The fantasy book that I didn't know that I needed!
What an incredibly wholesome story. This book hit every mark and was an excellent introspective look into a layered character. It is rare that I am able to empathize with a character in such a personal way. This is exactly what I've needed in fantasy. It is an amazing story, with distinct characters, told in a wholesome, edifying, and uplifting way. This is a story of hope when things seem hopeless.
I won't go into too many details, but even the romance in this book was absolutely flawless.
What a wholesome book!
I have already purchased all of Diamanti 's other books and will dive into them immediately, especially after reading this cozy fantasy tale.
Diamanti just set the standard for every other fantasy book that I read, showing us that you don't have to have explicit content, bad language, or all of your characters be morally gray to tell a compelling story. This immediately jumped into the running for book of the year.
Oh my goodness, this book is just so lovely. It's so cozy and warm, while still weaving in important themes and representation. It was a pure delight to read, and it was also very insightful to read a portrayal of PTSD written by a veteran. I will certainly be picking up the next book in the series, and any other books by the author as well!
If wholesome was a book, this would be it. I adored the message of hope and perseverance. I want every veteran to read this and dont leave out the personal authors note/message to his fellow brothers in arms.
The characters were charming and adorable. I didn’t even mind that this was a low conflict and low stakes story. It's a cozy fantasy, and it delivered.
THOUGHTS: I really wish we were shown more of his backstory as a soldier. This part of his past was too little and rushed for me.
OVERALL: This is a tender, cozy fantasy and it would cheer up anyone needing some happiness and positive messages.
A heartfelt and cozy fantasy that explores healing, identity, and community. Felton, a retired dwarven guard, finds new purpose in a peaceful town full of warmth and charm. The story moves at a gentle pace, focusing more on personal growth than epic adventure. A comforting read with emotional depth—perfect for fans of character-driven stories.
I was so happy to receive an ARC of Guard in the Garden from Z.S. Diamanti! I’ve been meaning to read his work, and when he announced a cozy fantasy about a dwarf forced to step away from his warrior’s path to heal, I immediately signed up. He mentioned that if I enjoyed Legends & Lattes, this book would be right up my alley—and he was absolutely right.
At just 283 pages, this book felt like a warm, comforting break between my heavier reads. It follows Felton, a dwarf who has spent his life training to become one of Gallium’s elite warriors. But after a brutal battle leaves him injured, he has no choice but to recover in the quiet Garome District, moving in with his quirky twin aunts. With his military career seemingly over, the only job left for him is that of a city guard—a life he never wanted. But when a woman unexpectedly barges through his front door and invites him to visit her garden, Felton is drawn into a community that welcomes him with open arms, making him question whether his new path might hold a purpose he never considered.
This book is a heartwarming, feel-good story that beautifully intertwines themes of trauma, grief, healing, self-discovery, love, and found family. If you’re looking for heavy worldbuilding, action-packed sequences, or grimdark storytelling, this isn’t the book for you. But if you’re in the mood for a soul-stirring, cozy fantasy that tugs at the heartstrings and reminds you of the quiet beauty in new beginnings, I highly recommend picking this up.
Happy publication day to this lovely book! I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to read it early.
This novel is a warm mug of tea. A cozy fantasy, with deep emotional characters and a small gentle world. Everyone wants the best for Felton, but he can't see it as he's deep in grief and struggles with the changes to his life, career and dreams. Slowly, so slowly, we watch as he gets the help he needs from those around him. The growth and blooming of his heart is just lovely to experience. The characters around him are wonderfully written, full of support and good advice. I loved them all, each is something special. I loved Lili best (sprout) because she reached Feltons heart first and in the best way possible. Tem is adorable and we all need a tortoise in our lives! Such a great read! My rating is 4.25 rounded for GR
Thank you to the author for the chance to read and review this ARC. My thoughts are my own.
Immediately I was taken in by the harrowing story of the dwarf-veteran Felton Holdum and his journey on the way back to himself. A story close to his own heart, Z.S. Diamanti paints a picture of loss and trauma paired with wonderful world building and scenes that had me in literal tears. This book is perfect for anyone who is or has a veteran in their life, or someone who just needs an uplifting story to get them through a hardship. The characters are likeable, well-rounded, and brought life to what could have been a tragic story for Felton. And don't forget the absolutely mouth-watering depictions of food! Can I jump into this world just to have a bacon hash scramble??
From the bloody end on a battlefield to the inspiring rise of a war hero who was down in the dumps, Diamanti took me for a rollercoaster of emotions that I won't soon forget. There is so much hope woven into this story that it would be hard for anyone to not feel its glow. This is the epitome of cozy fantasy and I highly recommend it!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC of this book.
First of all, I want to thank Zac and the team for allowing me to read this and be part of the team! It’s a great opportunity.
As with his other books, to no surprise I loved this one just as much. It was refreshing break from high fantasy into a cozy fantasy style novel. I thought the way he broke down the characters and world were fantastic and really got you into that “cozy” mood. I loved returning to Finlestia!
Again, I really think he has a great writing style, he creates empathy and new characters really well and puts a lot of his own emotions/experiences into his writing and it makes it more personal. This should be enjoyed by everyone!
I read this book before its release as part of the author's ARC team. I overall enjoyed this story. It's a heartwarming family-friendly tale of a warrior veteran dwarf who has to re-integrate himself into normal life after sustaining a severe injury that leaves him chronically handicapped.
While I enjoyed the story, I wanted the writing style and the world to feel slightly more whimsical. There were times when the writing style felt very flat, and there was more telling vs. showing. I also wanted the world to contain more magical elements. Sometimes while reading I would forget that the story was set in a fantasy world.
I've seen this a lot in cozy fantasy novels, where the fantasy world feels like a one-for-one parallel of the "real" world. And I think cozy fantasy novels (and their authors) sell their stories a little short by not including a few more unique elements in their fantasy worlds.
An emotional journey that perfectly blends cozy fantasy, healing, and growth!
This is one of those books that had me actively looking forward to reading it throughout the day, and I'm already looking forward to re-reading it.
Injured in an epic battle over the city of Galium, Felton must find a way to live life outside of the ranks of the fierce dwarven warriors. He knows nothing about why anyone would want to decorate a street with flowers, or why a pie eating contest might be so important.
This story has an incredibly complex and emotional healing journey for veteran Felton, showcasing that cozy fantasy isn't all just about the "cozy". It's about the characters, and Diamanti does an incredible job.
This book will leave you smiling (and maybe even crying) with joy.
Wow! I've never read cozy fantasy before this, and I must say, I'm a fan. This book was everything I never knew I wanted. It was like Virgin River meets The Hobbit. And I loved every page of it. Bonus points for all the mouthwatering food sprinkled throughout the story. Definitely made me want to go on a pie baking spree.
The best cozy fantasy I've read to date! Guard in the Garden by Z.S. Diamanti captures everything that makes a story cozy while grounding it in meaningful explorations of loss, struggle and hope.
Set in the world of Finlestia, this story follows Felton, a dwarven soldier who has dedicated his life to fighting. During a bloody battle, Felton is left badly injured and his military career seems to be over until the captain of the guard gives him an opportunity. With few options Felton agrees and is stationed in a small, quiet town filled with quaint folk. As he patrols and serves the people of this town, he meets a human woman with a passion for gardens and finds himself wondering if he will ever find purpose again.
Guard in the Garden is the warm hug I didn’t know I needed. As Felton deals with PTSD, and physical injury causing pain and mobility limitations it was both heart wrenching and warming to see his journey. While he may not see his own worth, there are plenty of people who did. Giving him the chance he didn’t know he needed and the opportunity for something far greater.
On a personal note, the aspect of physical pain, mobility limitations and mental/emotional struggles that go along with that hit close to home. As someone who deals with chronic pain and all that comes with it, Felton’s experiences felt accurately represented. It’s clear the author tells Felton’s story from the heart making this a purposeful and meaningful read.
Another aspect that makes this work is the “day in the life” storytelling as we follow Feltons day’s from the fateful battle that left him injured to his mental and physical recovery after. This gives the characters a grounded feel as themes such as PTSD, grief, fear of the future, shame and so much more are explored through not only Felton, but the side cast as well. While I am not a soldier and can never know the struggles they face day to day, Felton’s experiences are expertly explored giving depth while maintaining that bingeable feel.
Guard in the Garden blends realistic human experiences through cozy fantasy in a way that strengthens its tale.
The support cast and their voices lended to the cozy vibe while building a realistic support for Felton. This mixed with the visuals, delicious teas, foods, rustic settings and themes made this the perfect mix of a cozy story for me. In addition to meaningful character developments, character driven and day in the life storytelling, delicious foods and found family? Yes, please!
I listened to the audiobook performed by Peter Leppard and he gave a spectacular performance..
Suffice it to say, this was the strongest cozy fantasy with most meaningful character developments I’ve seen in the genre. A must read for anyone looking for their next cozy read.
4.75/5🌟 *Guard in the Garden* is a beautifully crafted cozy fantasy that beautifully intertwines themes of trauma, healing, and self-discovery. The story follows Felton Holdum, an elite dwarven warrior whose life takes an unexpected turn after a leg injury in battle forces him to recuperate in the charming Garome District at his quirky aunts’ home. This setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Felton’s journey of growth and reflection.
What stands out in this narrative is Felton’s internal conflict between his longing to return to the battlefield and the undeniable charm of the quaint town and its warm-hearted residents. The introduction of a captivating love interest—a "sunshine woman"—adds a delightful layer to the story, highlighting that there is indeed more to life than just war and conflict. This aspect of the narrative encourages readers to explore the beauty of connection and personal fulfillment.
The similarities to Robin Hobb’s storytelling style enhance the reading experience, evoking the same sense of emotional depth and rich character relationships that fans adore. The whimsical elements, hinted through phrases like “legends and lattes,” create a lighthearted atmosphere that perfectly complements the more profound themes at play.
The writing is engaging and reminiscent of classic fantasy novels, inviting readers to immerse themselves in a world that feels both familiar and refreshing. The world-building is skillfully done, making it easy to lose oneself in Felton’s journey. This story truly embodies what cozy fantasy is all about—an intimate adventure that soothes the soul and warms the heart.
Overall, *Guard in the Garden* is a delightful read that offers an escape into a beautifully imagined world filled with love, friendship, and self-discovery. It's a book that promises to resonate with readers of all ages for years to come. Just be sure to have some snacks and tissues handy—you'll want to savor every moment of this heartfelt journey!
WOW! Now I usually do not like to open a review by naming a completely different book by a different author, but in this case I really need to. Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes more or less introduced or at least cemented a new subgenre to fantasy – cozy fantasy. But not only that, it also set the bar for this genre immensely high, because it’s such a great book. Now, I came upon Z.S. Diamanti’s Guard in the Garden more or less by accident, it was a recommendation in kickstarter. And since I have found some rare gems there and the synopsis really sounded like my cup of tea, I bought it without knowing the author. But then other books happened, and I only now found the time to read it – and I’m absolutely and positively floored! That bar for cozy fantasy I talked about earlier? Guard in the Garden passed it with flying colours, if not completely obliterated it. Yes, I enjoyed Guard in the Garden that much!
Main character Felton Holdum dedicated his whole (still rather young) life to becoming an elite warrior, a garhawk rider, for the Dwarven empire of Galium. He only wanted to serve and protect his people, his home and always gave his very best to do so. But then during a battle, he becomes severely injured. Felton cannot just go back on duty, cannot go back to his old life in the Dwarven military. So, he moves in with his aunts and tries to find a new occupation and a new meaning in life. Felton becomes a guard in the rather quiet Garome District. Sounds boring and ordinary? For Felton, it is. But to him, it is only temporary until he gets fit for battle again. We follow the somewhat grumpy dwarf on his journey through the Garome district, getting to know all the people there, and we are also taken on his very personal journey to find a new purpose in life.
Author Z.S. Diamanti also served in the military, so Guard in the Garden felt like a very personal story, probably the reason why it felt so genuine. Dealing with PTSD and grief and trying to find a new reason in life are not typical fantasy-stories. But on top, it is excellently written, has lots and lots of heart and warmth and the characters are simply adorable. Heck, I want to move to the Garome district now and meet all these people!
I cannot recommend Guard in the Garden enough; it is a truly wonderful and heartwarming book that I henceforth declare a must-read!
This is a cozy fantasy that I can get behind. It’s guaranteed you’re going to feel good reading this book. My dad was in the Coast Guard for 20 years and decided to retire. I was 7 at the time. I remember he was not thrilled with his new career and decided he wanted to go back to the Coast Guard. I remember how disappointed he was when they said he should stay retired and not return. I thought about my dad reading this book.
I think you will like the plot, the characters and how a person can move on in life and find joy even when at first they doubted it could happen.
I want to thank the author for providing me an early copy of his book. My review is voluntary.
I was given this free ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was the first of Diamanti's works that I've read and it won't be the last! This was an enjoyable cozy read with fun characters, the exploration through trauma and healing, and some really great food descriptions.
