Waverly holds the vial of red liquid in her hands. She doesn’t know what it is, or why it’s important. But she knows that the mysterious Shadowface wants it, and is willing to do anything to get it. Waverly hides in the settlement of Elkhorn with Ethan, but it seems that Shadowface has eyes everywhere. Now Waverly must use her power—the ability to see glimpses of the future—to try and determine when Shadowface may strike. Not only does she discover death and destruction ahead, but a betrayal among comrades. Time is running out and Waverly must find a way to save the only friend she has left—Ethan, defend the settlement of Elkhorn from annihilation, and stop Shadowface once and for all.
Jason D. Morrow is the author of the Prototype D series, The Starborn Ascension, The Starborn Uprising, and The Marenon Chronicles. He enjoys playing guitar, shooting videos, and spending time with his lovely wife, Emily.
Awesome! I almost never read the 2nd or 3rd book of a trilogy but I HAD to read this one. As soon as I finished the first (which I highly recommend reading before this one), I immediately purchased the second. Now I'm dying to read the 3rd. It said August of 2014 so I'm impatiently awaiting it! I almost never read books with supernatural themes (although I love zombie books) but if you aren't into them, this one will change your mind. You have to read this trilogy!!! Very strong character development. Tons of excitement and suspense. You won't be able to put it down!
I am taking time to say how exciting this second book in the Series was, before I hurry on to book three. Some are Starborn and have special abilities. Waverly hides a vital of blood that Shadowface wants very much. Weaver's views of the future don't tell her what is really happening or why. Well written, characters well defined. If you read the first one you know you have to read this one.
Wow. Let start with the ending. Holy crap. That last minute. I knew. I saw it coming. I hoped I was wrong. Talk about twisted and wrong and evil. I had to squeeze my eyes to keep from seeing it in mind, but no avail. One can't help but rush to the next book in the series. This story evolves with even more action and some back story for how the main characters came to be and how the "gray plague" as I like to call it, came to be. So we get a few more pieces of the puzzle.
Narration is done by the same narrator from book one and it's good. Now, back to that ending. Holy alien babies, Batman!
Book two sees further developments in the battles with the greyskins and standing against the power-hungry Shadowface.
I have the omnibus edition but wanted to say that this installment is an enjoyable read. It's fast-paced and a little different from the usual zombie stories.
The idea of the Starborn is intriguing. There are words of wisdom, however, it will always be the tragedy of humankind in that lessons are never learned.
I actually finished this a while ago and forgot to write a review. I’m still into the story, but it’s losing its appeal. I can’t help but blame it on the back and forth of the chapters again. It just doesn’t flow the same. Still a great read with nods to the original trilogy, which I love when authors do! Still enjoyed it and worth the read.
It's official: Jason D. Morrow is the king of the cliffhanger ending. I'm so glad I got this trilogy as a bundle because I don't know what I'd do if I had to wait for the final book. Sophomore books tend to suffer from Middle Child Syndrome: trying so hard to please, but inevitably falling short. This book is quite the opposite. So much was revealed and a lot of questions were answered, but left you wanting just enough to want to jump right into the final book. Which is exactly what I intend to do.
DNF. Good Reads need to add another option (besides read, currently reading, want to read). I didn't "read" it all the way, I'm no longer reading it currently, but I don't "want to read it" either, I'm giving up on it.
I borrowed the set (books 1-3) for my July Kindle Prime Lending Library choice. I made it through the first and started on the second (just because it was right there). There are new POVs introduced, and I had a hard time liking to getting into any of the characters (old or new). I put down my Kindle figuring I'd come back to this ... and I was just never getting back into it. I'm not even sure how far I got into book two (a problem with the "sets")
Just looking back up and reading the blurb here ... annoying! Just the name "Shadowface" felt so juvenile. I've returned the book now, but I believe it was present tense (as the blurb) and I really dislike present tense, especially when I'm so aware of it.
I'm not going to go into detail like I did the the last book because I need to pick up book 3 and start reading. This book starts just as the last book ends, which I like because I'm already invested in the characters and background.
Whereas the last book primary focused on Waverly's past, this one is mostly focused on Remi. It tells how the virus started, who is behind it and why. We get more detail on how Waverly and Remi's stories cross paths. We even learn more about Gilbert who was a jerk in the last book, but now I understand why.
We get more insight on Waverly's power to see into the future and it throws her into a future she sees but you can't imagine until the end what a shock is coming. And if you are anything like me, you will be on edge until the very last sentence once again!
Highly recommended and one hell of a twisted story!!!
Waverley and Remi reunite, a character well known to readers of the Starborn Uprising trilogy enters the scene, Shadowface's true identity is revealed, a new character joins the two sisters we've been following since the first book as a narrator... and a jaw-dropping cliffhanger guarantees that readers will be back for the conclusion of the series, which continues to provide fast-paced intriguing entertainment.
Book two of the Starborn Ascension series. A post-apocalyptic tale about survival after zombie apocalypse. It includes violence, supernatural powers, zombies, love.
Good story. I didn't understand Waverly's obsessive aversion to guns considering the violent world she lived in.
I'm normally not big on zombies but they seem to fit in here.
I recommend this.
More of his books, and other good books, can be found at Smashwords, Amazon and other booksellers.
...because I enjoyed the first. I do not think that I will be buying the next one. Several things frustrated me. First, the hop skip jumping through time forward and back was confusing and I felt unnecessary. Second, I dislike cliffhanger endings which have no purpose other than to lure me into buying the next one. Give me a straight forward ending and I am far more likely to buy the next one.
I have really enjoyed this series so far. I didn't think I was going too at first. The first book was just as good. I can't believe all the bombshells this book had. And the cliffhanger, my God! I really hope the 3rd book comes out soon. I really want to see how this ends.
Really great follow up. A lot of people complained that it was annoying how the first one ended and then you had to pay for the second. In my opinion the first one was long enough to get me hooked and to get me into the world. Totally worth paying for the second one.
I could only give this book three stars because A) I hate cliff hangers and B) I hate cliff hangers! All in all, it is not a bad book. Away From the Sun is not great either. I would like to know more about the star born and their history. Hope the third book clears everything up.
Simply put, this is the best "zombie apocalypse" setting I have ever read. It's built to be very possible even, and maybe especially, the way the world currently is.
This book picks up almost immediately where the first left off, which is remarkably important to the story.
Good grief! What a shocker ending. The story held me until the very end which was totally unexpected. I have no choice but to read book three, which I hope is just as good.
I couldn't stop reading. The storyline is so sad and tragic. The characters are interesting. I love Waverly's character, but she is so naive. It makes me want to scream.
