Only Mr Darcy: A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Once in a great while, one comes across someone who is exquisitely familiar, although a stranger...ELIZABETH BENNET IS ONLY TWELVE years old when she hears a prediction that will change her the name of the man she is destined to marry. That name is not Fitzwilliam Darcy, so when that gentleman arrives in Hertfordshire when she is twenty, she is determined to disregard him, no matter how much he confuses and intrigues her. The prophecy, whispered by her grandmother on her deathbed, was a certainty she embraced. So why has Mr Darcy come into her life?

DARCY, UNABLE TO HELP HIS OWN YOUNG SISTER find her footing in life, has come to one he needs a wife. Miss Jane Bennet, of perfect beauty and proper manner, fits his list of requisites admirably and yet, he feels no tug towards her. Instead he finds himself constantly drawn to her younger sister, the impertinent and unpredictable Elizabeth, a whirlwind of defiance and wit that both captivates and infuriates him.

SHOULD HE FOLLOW HIS HEART or make a pragmatic choice between the two sisters? And what if, at the end of all his turmoil, the sister he chose does not choose him?

Only Mr Darcy is a closed door regency romance and a variation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The romantic tropes explored include fated love, friends to lovers romance, and love triangles. The angst level is low.

Ms. Cooper is my go-to author when I want to read of an ardent, deep love without the writing going inside the bedroom. In Only Mr. Darcy, she fulfills that need and adds sparkling, witty, and hot banter between our beloved characters. I had a difficult time at the beginning of the story with Elizabeth's dogged adherence to the prophecy—instead of marrying for love and affection, she wished to marry to fulfill fate. The more she questioned that concept, the more engrossed I became in the story. As she let go of her ideals and matured, I found her character more likeable. I also found the repetition of Jane's perfection rather tedious. However, the interactions between Darcy and Elizabeth drew me back into the narrative, and by the end, both were as steadfast and passionate as ever. This is novella length, and I recommend it as a clean, low-angst HEA respite.

Loved the ending!
Going in, I wasn’t too sure about the prophecy angle of this story—Elizabeth hearing her destined husband’s name as a young girl at her Grandmother Gardiner’s deathbed felt a bit too ‘fairy tale’ for me, but by the time I reached the final chapters, our dear couple had me completely in their thrall. Julie Cooper’s romantic prose in those chapters is so moving and heartfelt, I thought it turned the story into something truly special.

The dialogue between Elizabeth and Darcy throughout the book is fantastic—crisp, honest, and full of that spark that I crave in a good variation. Their conversations felt more open than usual which was very refreshing. I’m not embarrassed to say that what I thought was a truly romantic ending had me all in my feelings. A scene on the misty bridge, with Darcy baring his soul and Elizabeth letting her wall down after having first been disappointed by him, is the kind of endearing moment I love. I loved the proposal too.

Grandmama’s prophecy never quite won me over, but Cooper’s knack for writing characters and great dialogue—in this case, prose that swept me away in the moment—made this novella a joy to read.

Recommend.

Grandmother Gardiner had the second sight and knew things. While on her deathbed, Elizabeth and Jane visited her. Elizabeth asked who her future husband was. Before she died, a frail hand grabbed Elizabeth’s arm and cried out, ‘Charles.’ What? There were two girls in the room. Was this for Elizabeth or Jane? From then on, Elizabeth had her eyes peeled for anyone named Charles.

When Mrs. Bennet exclaimed that Netherfield had been let at last, Elizabeth and Jane held their breath. Elizabeth asked if she knew his name. Of course, it was Charles Bingley. Elizabeth took special care when she dressed for the monthly assembly. This could be her night or knight in shining armor. Not all would work according to Elizabeth’s expectations or Jane’s.

This was a very different Georgiana. Bless her heart, she was having a hard time navigating society. Her social circle was rife with villains, rakes, scoundrels, and ne’er-do-wells. She suffered with trust issues as everyone around her had proven not to have her best interests at heart. The two exceptions were her brother and cousin, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam.

Wonderful premise, but....

Elizabeth is eleven or twelve when she visits her dying Grandmother Gardiner, hoping to ask about her future prospects for a husband. Grandmother Gardiner is a crotchety old crone known for "second sight" and predictions. The old lady blurts out the name "Charles" before she dies. Therefore, Elizabeth grows up believing that the man she'll one day marry will have that name. When the Bingleys and Darcy arrive at Netherfield, Elizabeth is dismayed when she feels no attraction to Charles Bingley, but rather feels drawn to his stern friend Darcy. To make matters worse, Darcy has tentatively decided to pursue Jane Bennett, out of a misguided sense of needing some calm and serenity in his melancholy life.

I generally like these variations that involve some mysticism and mysterious beliefs. I also like this author. She's an automatic purchase for me. The romantic pull between Elizabeth and Darcy is lovely, and the circumstances surrounding their more special meetings are charming, magical, and superb. However, what knocked a couple of stars from my review was the silly stubbornness and stupidity of Elizabeth's pursuit of a relationship with Bingley, all on the strength of a name being uttered by a dying woman, and in the face of the most overwhelming evidence that it's just not going to work. I just don't like it when Elizabeth appears stupid. And then there was Darcy's fairly awful cruel words to Elizabeth before he got his head screwed on straight. I almost wanted Elizabeth to give him more of a battle before she capitulated, just to prove her self esteem and courage.

The book is very well written and well edited. I recommend this book for a romantic, and slightly mysterious story with an interesting premise.

When Elizabeth is twelve her dying grandmother tells her the name of her future husband. Therefore when twenty year old Elizabeth thinks she has finally found him she is determined to do everything to make him fall in love with her. But soon she questions her own feelings because she is drawn to the brooding and taciturn Fitzwilliam Darcy. But he can not be her future husband because it was not his name that her grandmother predicted.
Fitzwilliam Darcy must find a wife to finally get rid of the demands of his uncle. And he needs help to manage his melancholic sister. The beautiful and serene Jane Bennet seems to fulfill his requirements perfectly, but he nevertheless finds himself drawn to Jane's lively and impertinent sister Elizabeth.
Will Darcy follow duty or will he go where his heart leads him? Will Elizabeth cling to the prediction of her grandmother or will she follow her feelings? Or has fate completely other plans for them both?

The book was very well written by the author Julie Cooper. I always enjoy her stories very much and therefore her books are a must-read for me. This book was no exception, I was hardly able to put it down.

At the beginning Elizabeth is stubbornly clinging to the prediction of her grandmother. Her grandmother had not predicted Fitzwilliam Darcy as Elizabeth's future husband therefore there can be no love and attraction and certainly no future with him. I like that Elizabeth eventually realizes that her heart sees this matter in another way and that she, even if she doesn't like it, is in love with Darcy. I'm glad that she finally acts on it, but before the happily ever after she has to endure much heartbreak.

In this variation Darcy is as stubborn as Elizabeth in clinging to former beliefs, he may even be more stubborn. As always Elizabeth does not fulfill the requirements for a bride of Fitzwilliam Darcy and as always he is attracted to her. He even acts, in parts, on this attraction but he is not so violently in love that he thinks he can overcome all obstacles and propose marriage. Or his sense of duty is even stronger than usual. What a pity, things between them could have been solved so much easier - but then we could not have read this book 😉. I was so glad when he finally is no longer able to resist Elizabeth and can't imagine a world without her. It took him really, really long.

The book has many “oh no” moments for me. You finally have a book where Darcy and Elizabeth are both drawn to each other from the start - and then they both, sadly, have their reasons to not act on this attraction and interest. In addition there is Darcy's interest in Jane, a woman that is not meant for him but only for his friend (if I have a say in the pairings of Pride and prejudice 😉). Therefore I had many moments where I uttered this sentence because I wanted Darcy and Elizabeth to act on their attraction and ignore the prediction and the duty.
But fortunately some things in this variation were as they should be and Bingley and Jane are very much interested in each other. And while Darcy and Elizabeth still try to understand their feelings Bingley and Jane are sure of their feelings and are in love. By this some obstacles put themselves out of the way which finally leaves only Darcy and Elizabeth and they need to resolve what to do with their feelings and to find out how they envision their future and if the other should be a part of it.

As nearly always George Wickham is part of this book. He has a nefarious plan but fortunately is not successful. And, you may not believe it, his plan is no hindrance to ODC way to a relationship, it rather helps them along. If Wickham had known that 😉

If you like to know if Elizabeth will follow the prediction of her grandmother or choose to pursue her interest in Fitzwilliam Darcy you should definitely read this excellent book.

I highly recommend it.

My goodness everything has been turned on its head. All because supposedly second-sighted Grandma Gardiner cried out 'Charles' on her deathbed, her last utterance before she expired, when a thirteen year old Elizabeth asked for the name of her husband. Elizabeth took that proclamation to heart. Eye roll.
This leads to an interesting twist to our canon P&P tale; all driven by Elizabeth who in some respects is very young (she is no younger than in canon) but that prophecy did stunt her and make her more reckless than canon I think.
As you can guess, it's opposite day in this Austenland as a result. Normally I have trouble with a non-ODC pairing, but it was just entertaining in this case as ODC is fighting for what they think is Fate while really fighting Fate. Darcy is first interested in Jane (but really they do not suit, they bore and intimate each other respectively) and of course Elizabeth is obsessed with Bingley (and the same could be said of this pairing - bored and intimated). It does lead to some frank and somewhat open discussions, banter and you could say verbal brawls between ODC couple though (who ironically are attracted to each other and recognize their own attractions early on). Another eye roll please.
It was, as Mrs Bennet might say, vastly entertaining.

As we learn in the author's story description, Jane and Elizabeth visit their dying Grandmother. Elizabeth (at the age of 12) asks her grandmother, who is gifted with foresight, for the name of her future husband. So it is with this knowledge that she and Jane,k years later, learn of a Charles Bingley being the man to lease Netherfield. (I am sure lovers of Pride & Prejudice can see where this is going.

Jane, with all her usual characteristics, does all she can NOT to succumb to Mr. Bingley's obvious attraction to her. While Elizabeth is dismayed by that lack of attention to her on Charles' part, she doesn't give up. And then we have Darcy who is looking for a wife as he (and several relations) believe that with the proper wife Georgiana's problems since Wickham's attempts to elope with her will be better addressed than by her brother, who is failing at bringing her out of her self-reproaches and withdrawn behavior.

There is much interaction between ODC and even physical attraction, which both try to deny has any meaning.

I enjoyed this story. Although there is a possible explanation for Grandmother Gardiner's prediction being wrong in the end, it was interesting reading of both Jane and Elizabeth looking at the "wrong" man to be their future husband.

This could have easily been a solid 3 stars for me, except that there was a lack of internal logic or coherence that made its way past through the author+editor+publisher team!

The whole story relies on 1) Elizabeth’s irrational superstition, 2) a prediction of the future that is supposed to be gospel truth for Elizabeth and Jane.

This presents a conundrum for the author and us readers: if Elizabeth thoroughly believes points 1&2, it becomes impossible for Lizzy to change her mind halfway through the book with no sound explanation for it, because it would mean that she is throwing away her entire belief system so far, OR that her decision for Darcy carries a heavy weight of bad luck, as she knows it supposedly happens when her grandmother was contradicted in her foretellings.

Elizabeth behaves (and thinks) like a child or an immature teenager throughout the book, and this moody hormonal behaviour is whitewashed by cheesy lies repeated ad nauseam such as “the sun, the moon and the stars” as romantic hyperbole (which leads me to believe this author recently re-watched Game of Thrones!).

Darcy’s banter was cute and fun to read, but his “obstacles” were also illogical and so easily overcome that even as a plot device his “prejudice” was feeble.

* As soon as I read Darcy’s mention of a ghostly appartion at Pemberly heralding the birth of a healthy child, it rang a bell in my head. I went back to check the ending of Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale, and as I was not surprised to see the same plot device appear again in the Epilogue on this book, I was surprised to see this author made her “nod” more literal by picking up a direct paraphrased quote mirrored between Darcy and the Duke in Kinsale’s story, about recognizing a miracle when they see it.

Elizabeth's grandmother causes lots of unnecessary angst with her deathbed prediction. Because of her pronouncement, Elizabeth pursues the wrong man and falls hard for the forbidden one.

In reading the story, I wanted to grab Elizabeth and Darcy by the shoulders and shake some sense into them. It all works out in the end when Darcy finally gets a clue. His smoldering intensity catches fire and destroys his doubts. 4.5 stars

overall, a diverting read

Angling fits Elizabeth’s personality so well. It’s a wonder no one has depicted her that way before. I also liked the new layers of Georgiana’s tale. We frequently hear of how governesses and maids in great houses were used; Ms Cooper shows us a new dynamic to consider, that of teacher and student.

As for the rest of the tale, Ms Cooper keeps the pace tight and doesn’t let her characters run away with the plot.

An adorable portrayal of our beloved couple, somewhat following the original plot but granting them different traits and a novel approach to falling in love. I will read this story again for sure.

Based upon her grandmother's dying words, Elizabeth Bennet believes her destiny lies with Charles Bingley, while Fitzwilliam Darcy has set his sights on Jane Bennet.

3.5 rounded up. Julie Cooper is a talented writer and this book was a well written and interesting Pride and Prejudice variation. It was a unique premise that brings some superstition and ghost stories into the mix.

Elizabeth has a grandmother that was known for making some accurate predictions for the future. As a young lady’s security in that time was dependent upon making a decent marriage, Elizabeth turned to this possibly clairvoyant personage to give her the name of her future husband so there would be no doubt when the time came that she was choosing the right man. Grandmother Gardiner’s last word was a name that Elizabeth believed was that of her future husband and . . . It was NOT Fitzwilliam or Darcy or anything remotely connected to our beloved Mr. Darcy. As an avid JAFF reader, this, of course, is troubling and keeps you reading to see how the situation will play out and how we can get to our happily ever after for our favorite couple.

Elizabeth and Darcy have an unconventional and unusual courtship in this book. I enjoyed the banter and opportunities they had to get to know each other in this story. The book kept my interest and was well paced. The characterization of Darcy and Elizabeth felt a little off to me in this one. I won’t say that I didn’t like them as characters, but they also did not really familiar or feel much like the Darcy and Elizabeth that I know and love. It wasn’t bad, just different and not quite as compelling as their original counterparts. I found some of their actions and even thoughts to be out of character and not fitting the image I have of them in my head. With that being the case, I didn’t really feel as strong of a connection to them or feel completely invested in their romance. I did still enjoy the book overall and still look forward to this author’s works.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a part of the Obstinate, Headstrong Girl series. This is a closed door, low angst regency romance and the romantic tropes explored include fated love, friends to lovers romance, and love triangles. Once in a great while, one comes across someone who is exquisitely familiar, although still a stranger.

Elizabeth Bennet is only twelve years old when she hears a prediction that will change her life, the name of the man she is destined to marry.

Darcy unable to help his own young find her footing in life, has come to one conclusion, he needs a wife. Miss Jane Bennet, of perfect beauty and proper manner, fits his list of requisites admirably and yet, he feels no tug towards her. Instead, he finds himself constantly drawn to her younger sister, the impertinent and unpredictable Elizabeth, a whirlwind of defiance and wit that both captivates and infuriates him. Should he follow his heart or make a pragmatic choice between the two sisters? What if, at the end of all his turmoil, the sister he chose does not choose him, only Mr Darcy? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

Julie Cooper is one of my favorites in the Austenesque space. Needless to say I was so excited to read her latest P&P variation, Only Mr. Darcy. To say that I devoured this story is an understatement...I read it in 1 day and I so enjoyed it!

In this unique take, Cooper takes us on quite the twist from Austen's original story, where Darcy and Elizabeth start out their acquaintance thinking that Jane and Bingley may be the right partner for them, respectively. Let's just say, you are in for some major shennanigans! Don't worry thought, all paths eventually work themselves out.

After her grandmother known for having a gift of sight, tells a young Elizabeth that her destined husband will have the name Charles, she grows up waiting to meet this destined man and hoping hers will be a match of romance and mutual respect. Needless to say, things get interesting when the amiable and availabel Charles Bingley joins the neighborhood, accompanied by his handsome but quite prideful friend, Mr. Darcy.

I really loved that Darcy and Elizabeth had so many opportunities to get to know one another through the various situations that Cooper creates for them throughout the story. As Elizabeth and Darcy try to get their hearts in line with their minds, they are slowly laying the foundation for strong feelings that cannot be ignored. I adored watching them each realize that there really could really only one way forward. It was also lovely to have an opportunity to see how Elizabeth embraced her early friendship with Georgiana.

This was such another unique and fun Pride and Prejudice read from Cooper. Definitely take a read if you are looking for an Austen tale that you can breeze through and smile all the way through!

4.5/5. Even though this starts with a fantastical premise of fated romance, it works in service of the relationships and drama and doesn't get bogged down in fate as a real attractive force like I thought it might. It's used purely to explore how incompatible Darcy x Jane and Elizabeth x Bingley are, and thus how compatible E&D are by contrast. Honestly, I think E&D are more attracted to each other in this book than they are in Austen.

The desire between them is intense (though it's basically a clean romance) and they deny their feelings for a number of implausible reasons, though Cooper makes them seem reasonable in context. Darcy's resistance to acting on his feelings, in particular, felt absurd to me. He proposes to Elizabeth at Easter with 1/100th the encouragement he gets in this as well as more scruples than he has here. I didn't believe his reasons for not proposing, but I did like how Elizabeth was more in charge and active in expressing her feelings than normal. Variations, given the structure of P&P and the mores of Regency society, typically center on Darcy falling first and Elizabeth coming around after Darcy betters himself (after expressing her right of refusal). However, here Elizabeth is grasped by primal, passionate, but also comprehensive, attraction to Darcy. She is basically magnetized to him and, though he likes her too, the story implies her feelings were greater than his. I found that approach pretty interesting, since usually he's the one sure of his feelings for her. Elizabeth falls first is pretty rare and I'm glad I found another good one. Cooper is also a great writer.

When one believes in predictions instead of following their heart, blunder is the result, and this is what happens when 10-year-old Elizabeth Bennet asks her grandmother, who is on her deathbed, and was known for her ability to see the future, who her husband will be. The result is agony and heartache for both Elizabeth and Darcy. They are very much attracted to each other, but try to deny it, each for their own reasons. Each is making excuses why the other won't suit as a partner, but they are unable to stay away and seek one another's company.

I love Julie Cooper's writing, which is moving and precise. The build-up of the attraction and growing love between Darcy and Elizabeth kept me on the edge of my seat. It was so palpable. I was very much excited to find out how their story would end. I loved Elizabeth and Darcy in this story. Darcy is swoonworthy. He is reserved, buries his true feelings, witty, has a wonderful sense of humor and is honorable, among others. Elizabeth is witty, lovely, adorable, independent, opinionated and unconventional. Only Mr Darcy is a captivating and stirring P&P variation that gave me a book hangover. I hope other readers will enjoy it as much as I did.

Elizabeth Bennet's rather terrifying grandmother was dying.
She was said to be gifted with second sight and Elizabeth wanted to ask for a prediction on the name of her future husband. So twelve year old Lizzie drags her older sister Jane to the lady's bedside.

Knowing that name, colours her relationships with the men she meets in Society, as she grows to womanhood.

When a new tenant arrives at Netherfield Park, excitement rises. Could this be the long awaited future husband?

Unfortunately, Mr Bingley has the right name, but is only interested in Jane. His friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy views Jane as an appropriate wife for himself and seeks to woo her.

Darcy and Lizzie agree to help each other to reach their goals, but an attraction between them causes them confusion and vexation.

The novelty of Darcy pursuing Jane, and Elizabeth thinking she wants Charles is well handled, with a pleasing denouement.

The Sun, The Moon, The Stars. THE ONE.

What could be built/damaged by a fortune teller? What would be the cost when the future was already planned for you? Would you keep yourself on the track or try to fight for your own path?

The author has the gift in manipulating our readers’ heart. The dilemma Darcy struggled in, the internal debate played in Elizabeth’s mind, the wrestling of will suppressed by Jane; all of these were the diamonds of the story. When one tosses a coin into the fountain, does one make a wish? When one goes to a friend’s show or an exam, does one offers, ‘break a leg’ or ‘finger crossed’ ? Is it superstitious or just pure chances? Is it supernatural or merely common habit?

~Spoiler~
I did wish for Elizabeth to have more backbone and to accept Darcy’s what-take-you-so-long recognition/epiphany after more doubt and interrogation. The proposal scene was lovely though.

I was expecting that Mr Darcy had an interesting middle name or sth like that, but I was wrong…

This was such an amazing read. The passionate romance of Darcy and Elizabeth just burned off the pages (but in a very chaste manner).

As a young girl Elizabeth hears from her dying grandmother (who is considered to have the second sight) that she will marry a man named Charles. Jane is with her at the time and both grow up wholly believing this prediction to be true. It seems her grandmama was absolutely right when a young man named Charles Bingley comes into the neighborhood. So why is Elizabeth essentially indifferent to the young man she believes she is fated to marry and obsessed with his friend who seems to be considering her sister, Jane?

Darcy desperately needs a wife. Someone who is calm and appropriate to help him launch his sister. Georgiana is lately unruly and ungovernable and Darcy has no idea how to reach her. Jane Bennet seems to be the answer to his prayers, so why does he, and his sister, react so strongly to the unconventional and inappropriate Miss Elizabeth Bennet?

Prepare for a romance invoking the sun, the moon and the stars!

A delightful blend of with and romance, with just a pinch of mystique.

A well written book from a very reliable author. It is a given that books by Julie Cooper will be well edited and that the use of language will be rich and entertaining. The sugar-on-top is the gentle romance and delicious badinage between Darcy and Elizabeth.

The plot was an interesting one and the struggles which Darcy and Elizabeth both endured as they sought to do what they thought was right rather than what they wanted were portrayed well. I very much appreciated that there was little interference from other characters on the page, or indeed off the page. This was about two people coming to understand that what they wanted was not wrong but was, in fact, very right.

And what a lovely cover.

For those who believe in dreams

A strong and witty Elizabeth struggles to fulfill what she believes is her grandmother's dying prophecy and chaos ensues when she and Jane think that Bingley must be meant for Lizzy and not for Jane. Darcy is distant, confused, and stuffy, Jane is perfect, Georgiana is troubled and innocent, and Wickham is nasty. Very satisfying happy ending after a little angst and a few small touches of magic.

ok this is definitely a new variant

I absolutely loved this one. I’ve read a lot reviewed few. This one though. The plot is completely different than others I’ve read. Completely believable and fits in with the original characters development. It has a slightly superstitious underlay which I enjoyed. Nothing crazy. Nothing you would find in a supernatural book. Just hints of fate showing up and tales of things to come and past.

Julie Cooper is among the JAFF authors who reliably bring wonderful stories to those of us who love the genre. I was so happy to see that she had a new story out and read it right away - I was not disappointed! I loved the creative story and the versions of E & D that the author brought to life in the story.

I recommend with enthusiasm!

A Hard Fought For Love

This is a wonderful story that had me laughing and crying in turns. Elizabeth and Darcy quickly fall in love with each other but they both fight against their inclination towards the other person because of a variety of reasons. It is heartbreaking to see them deny what is so obvious. Thankfully, the story ends happily, as any tale of ODC should.

Julie is an amazing author and I can’t help but recommend her books. Can’t wait to see what she puts out next.
