Caina Amalas is the Ghost circlemaster of Istarinmul, the leader of the Emperor's spies in the city. She is a master of stealth and disguise, and faces foes of terrible power.
So when thieves try to burn down the home of an impoverished widow, Caina sets out to help the old woman.
Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
This short story is numbered 2.5 in the Ghost Exile series and presumable is meant to come after book 2 Ghost in the Maze, but some of the details don’t quite fit. However, it was a very enjoyable read.
I'm a sucker for a freebie and Mr. Moeller's offerings via Smashwords gets me every time. This isn't the first time that I've re-read one of these short stories. I think it may have been included in one of the Ghost anthologies. Not that I'm complaining but there are so many that it's hard to keep track.
Moving on, this involves Caina returning to Istarinmul to reestablish the Ghost network. She comes to the aid of an aging widow and encounters some possible recruits.
A short story from the world of the Ghosts. Enjoyable with a solid foundation, doesn't add much to the overall arc but a quick read to fill a few minutes with familar characters!
