Balls have a core. Apples do, too. The Earth has a core. So do you! Everyone has an inner place made by God for welcoming Him and meeting with Him. Graham Blanchard’s newest Absorb book, inspired by Ephesians 3:14-19, appeals to the youngest readers with simple text and engaging scenes to convey an often difficult concept to grasp—even for many adults. In the Graham Blanchard book collection, Absorb books connect information about God with a child’s inner life. Children assimilate on a personal level who God is and how they are made to be with Him, trust Him and love Him. Graham Blanchard has board books grouped by section- Learn, Absorb, and Praise. Learn books are designed to help children to know the heart and mind of Jesus. Absorb books are designed to help children understand about their inner lives. And Praise books are designed to help children remember God in all they do.

The Graham Blanchard website has many resources for families- tip sheets for using each book, mom mentors that can encourage parents along the way, a guide with five tips for parenting during the first five years of life, and a prayer wall that parents can use to post their children’s names for prayer. The publishing company desires to come alongside parents and equip them for teaching very young children about God. They are also dedicated to giving back to the community through donations to literacy programs for children. They also partner with other nonprofit groups for giving back.

Your Core is a book about the soul. The book, written by Callie Grant, uses illustrations of a ball, an apple, and the earth's core to explain to children that their core is their center. The book explains the purpose of the core of a ball, the core of an apple, and the core of the earth. And then it explains that our core, our soul is made to be filled by God and to have a relationship with Him.

The concept of a soul is a difficult one to understand- even for adults. Your Core uses illustrations that children can relate to to aid in understanding. There are colorful illustrations that will appeal to young children. And the story follows a rhyming pattern that very young children will enjoy l listening to again and again.

Although I really like the concept behind this book, I think that many children within the 0-5 age range suggested may not grasp much about the book. Although some toddlers and preschoolers may understand the idea of the core of a ball or the core of an apple, most won’t understand at all about the core of the earth or how a compass works. And I’m not sure that children in this age range would be able to make the connection between a ball’s core and an apple’s core and an inner part of themselves. Even with illustrations, that’s a very abstract idea to be grasped by a child that age.

Having made that disclaimer, I would still recommend the book as a great teaching resource. Why? For the same reason that I had my children memorize Scripture when they were toddlers and preschoolers. They didn’t understand what the words meant. But they store God’s Word in their hearts. And, as they’ve gotten older and understanding has dawned, that information is there, ready to be revisited by them. And that is the real benefit I see in all of the Graham Blanchard resources I’ve reviewed.

When parents make time to read these books over and over to their kids, facilitating discussions about Who God is and how He works in the world and in our lives, there will come a time that it all clicks. And then they will understand. Reading the books to them provides a framework for them to begin to understand these deeper ideas and concepts. And that will lead to some great conversations with our kids about spiritual things.

I previously reviewed a couple of books in the Absorb books from Graham Blanchard so I was eager to read more! Close as Breath and All of Me That You Can't See, also by Callie Grant, were big hits in my house.

About Absorb

Absorb books connect studies about the facts of God with a child’s inner life – what Jesus cares about most. Children assimilate on a personal level who God is and how they are made to be with him, trust him and love him.

My Thoughts

Your Core is designed for ages 0 - 5 and I have two kids on either end of that age group. Jax is 8 months old and Paige just turned five. I also have a six year old but since he's learning to read, he's more into books that have more words and board books are now "babyish" according to him! No worries because I had a perfectly willing audience.

About the Book

This book does a very good job about first explaining what a core is, in terms a child can understand. For example, an apple core and a baseball are something a kid can wrap their brain around. Then it gets a little more complex with the earth's core. Paige had a couple questions on that one. And finally, with our core which she had a lot of questions about!

It's such a foreign concept that it's even hard for adults to explain to kids. That's why these books are so great! They really open the door to amazing conversations and also speak to kids on their level. Sometimes when we get on their level, it helps us to understand more ourselves by looking through a child's point of view.

The Pictures

The illustrations are wonderful and I love their style. They have an old school Sunday school feel to me and reminds me of the pictures I saw as a kid growing up. This helps me feel even more connected to my kids and what they are learning because it brings me back to that same time of innocence and learning and wonder.

The Price

These books are about $8.99 which is average for board books for kids. They are worth it to me because they teach my kids concepts I even still have a hard time with.

My Conclusion

Your Core is short and sweet and a great introduction for kids to a concept that's abstract and will be foreign to them. Starting to read it so young will hopefully answer some questions ahead of time for my kids, especially Jax who will grow up hearing it.

Great message inside this little book. It’s simple yet powerful. It asks the reader this question, “Did you know you have a core?” What’s that? A child may ask. Answer; “Every child has an inner place made by God for friendship with him. You can welcome God into your heart and soul today.”

The author gives examples of items that have cores. Apples, Earth, baseballs and so do Kids. Purpose of cores vary.

The Scripture reference in this book is from Ephesians 3: 16-17
“I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.”

This passage helps bring this scripture to life for young readers. It’s also helpful for new believers and a reminder to others that God created us to worship Him. There is a spot in us that only He can fill.

Lots of things have cores. Those cores serve a purpose. We have a special core inside of us that serves a purpose too. Our core is where God is. This little board book will delight young children with its colorful pages and rhyming words. It will delight parents with its message of God in our hearts.

The illustrations fit well with the theme and help tell the story. The spiritual message that is being presented will be understood by the young children, but is full of depth. The book ends with a Bible verse. I noticed that the book helped start a conversation about our hearts with my young daughter. My son, while a bit older than the intended audience, enjoyed the book and wanted to talk about what the words meant. This book would be a perfect start to a young child's library or would make a wonderful gift.

This board book is another in the “Absorb” line of books from faith-based family publisher, Graham Blanchard. This book offers an explanation to young readers about what one’s “core” and “soul” is. This book doesn’t go into much detail at all, but the soul is a very hard concept to explain to anyone, especially to young ones. The text stays simple and mostly appropriate for ages 3-5ish. Some of the lines rhyme and some don’t, but the content itself is fairly solid. My kids enjoyed the brightly colored illustrations. The book ends with Ephesians 3:16-17, great versus to focus on for this topic. Your Core can help spark discussion in families about the core and soul.

Your Core by Callie Grant is part of The Absorb series. With great illustrations by Missi Jay that coincide with the explanations, they provide preschool children sound teaching about God and their lives as Christians. Using the analogies of an apple and baseball, it shows how the core is an important part of the function of each thing, just as God within us is important to being who He created us to be.

My preschooler enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to other parents. I received this book from the Book Club Network and Graham Blanchard Inc. in exchange for my honest opinion which I’ve provided here.

Your Core by Callie Grant is another very sturdy board book my son and I have enjoyed. This time the pictures, done by another illustrator, have more of a cartoon look which was bright and fun to look at. This book touches on cores within apples, the world, and balls all leading up to the truth that we all have a core inside of us as well. Teaching the truth about our souls in a way any young child can understand. I am really enjoying this specific line of books and the simple yet truthful messages they include. I received a copy for an honest review from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

This is the second book I have read and also shared with my little one. This book explains to children in a way they can understand that God loves them from the inside out. My son being autistic said he was excited he had a core. :) I would share this with all my family and friends that have small children. It is also a reminder to adults as well that they have a core that God made for them.

I will be leaving reviews on several sites and once I figure out my password. I will also be leaving one there. I received this book free from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion, which I have provided here.

The Core by Callie Grant arrived at my house at the perfect time – my 1 year old and 3 year old grandkids came! The Core talks about what is on the inside of objects – an apple, a ball, etc. Then it talks about a person’s core and how God speaks into our core. My grandkids LOVED this book and carried it around the whole week. When asked what book they wanted to read, they said, “The Core”!! This book is small enough to fit easily into a diaper bag and is perfect for the kids to hold on to. This is a fabulous little book!! I got this book free through Bookfun.org for their honest review of the book. I am also posting on Amazon, CBD, Deeper Shopping and Good Reads.

This is a great little introduction book for young kids to learn about God and in this specific book (its part of a collection) to learn in simple, easy-to-understand terms what your soul is. I really enjoyed it because of its simplicity on a complex subject. It has fun, colorful pictures young children with love and be able to relate to. The only complaint would be the use of the New International Version to pull the Biblical quote from at the end rather than the less corrupt King James Version.
