Classroom-tested strategies to inspire true student learning
Meet Every Learner's Needs delivers research-backed techniques to transform classrooms into dynamic learning environments in which all students are appropriately challenged—and appropriately supported—every day.
Based on teacher and Modern Classrooms Project cofounder Robert Barnett's experience training thousands of teachers worldwide, this book provides a methodology for K-12 educators to design lessons and courses that respond to individual learners' unique needs and help every learner develop authentic understanding. This approach has empowered educators and students in all grade levels and content areas, everywhere from underperforming inner-city public schools to elite international schools, across all fifty states and over 150 countries.
The book includes highly practical tips and templates, which busy teachers can use to provide better instruction immediately. Throughout the book, readers will learn how
Make direct instruction accessible and engaging to all learners Develop strong personal relationships with and between learners Create efficient learning experiences that give learners ownership and autonomy Share this approach with their colleagues and communities Meet Every Learner's Needs will leave readers both inspired and empowered to redesign instruction in their classrooms and communities. It will help educators, administrators, and parents take immediate action to create learning experiences that help all students truly succeed.
Robert Barnett is a former teacher and the co-founder of the Modern Classrooms Project. He taught math, computer science, English, social studies, and law, from the middle-school to university levels, at public and private schools in the United States and abroad. He hopes his own children will learn in Modern Classrooms someday.
This fall I'll be transferring to a high school that utilizes the Modern Classroom approach, so I thought it would be wise to read this book and get a little background research done.
I'm going to refrain from giving this a star rating because it feels impractical at this point. I have not implemented my own Modern Classroom or put many of the strategies into place. What I can say is that upon finishing this book I feel excited. I'm one of the many, MANY teachers experiencing burnout from a number of things: class sizes, behaviors, increasing responsibilities, and decreasing support to name a few. But I don't want to give it up. I'm still passionate about literature and I still value my students and our interactions more than I can express. So...what to do?
Meet Every Learner's Needs throws a lot at you, it's true. However Barnett doesn't try to hide that fact. He repeatedly admits that starting one's own Modern Classroom (MC) will most definitely be challenging and mistakes will be made, but teachers of all people understand that any worthwhile endeavor tends to be so.
Barnett combines his personal experiences in the classroom with that of other teachers who have successfully applied the MC. He provides practical advice and step-by-step strategies as well as a ton of free resources anyone can access to get started (he directs the reader to his website throughout the book; in conjunction with reading this I also took the free introductory course online - yes, completely free).
Another constant throughout the book is Barnett's urging to educators to trust their own experience and instincts. He respects that every teacher has certain methods they're comfortable with, and encourages them to tweak or simply disregard whatever MC procedures don't work for them.
Again, I am a total novice at this. The true test will come when I put theory into practice and begin the journey within my own classroom's four walls, with my own unique group of students. Meet Every Learner's Needs has given me some optimism and the blueprints for a new way of lesson delivery.
Barnett’s book is a game changer when it comes to transforming education in today’s global society. His ideas on changing views on instruction is a must if we are going to compete in the global market and he makes a valid case and backs it up with effective strategies to revolutionize our perceptions on education. It is well written and makes for a great resource on educational practices to have on hand.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
