Elvid Hunt in 1937 wrote "History of Fort Leavenworth 1827-1937" to commemorate the Fort's centennial. Cpt Walter Lorence updated the book in 1979-83 in cooperation with the Fort's Historical Society. The book is an outstanding reference for the history of the Kansas territory and the beginning of the Army Command and General Staff School. The book gave me a deeper appreciation for the role the Fort played in the early days of the Oregon and Santa Fe trails, Indian prairie conflicts, and Mexican as well as American Civil Wars. It is well referenced. (P)
