Other than feeling like at time needed a translator, or closed captioning at bottom of the screen if it were being watched on television rather than being read, this story was an okay introduction for me into the second adventure for character Ted Higuera. I did not miss reading the first one as it was pretty well covered in conversations and flashbacks during this one. Actually for me it was kind of distracting here and there because when caught up in the action happening at the moment it was kind of off putting to stop and have Ted relive his worst nightmares and then things go back to real time later on down the page.
I felt each and every ethical/moral quandary right along with this young man and in the end applaud his convictions on what is right or wrong winning the day, it really was a hard decision to make for a lot of reasons which Ted mulled over long and hard.
The family scenes were endearing and the suspenseful moments well played out so all in all it was interesting to immerse myself in a technological world that not only do I not really find appealing but some of the methods of business used were beyond my understanding as a caring human being as well.
That said the book would not have been as realistic without some of the more unsavory practices employed by the villain and the questionable ones employed by the good guys.

I would have given it four stars, but as a female reader, I took offense at the constant juvenile remarks about knockers and asses. It would not have hurt the storyline to leave that out. Especially if you want women to become fans.

I liked it. Good premise. This was the first book I’ve read by this author. Very pleasant surprise. The book was well written, had good character development, and flowed well. You feel for Ted and want to help him make his decision. Don’t let the fact that this is number 2 in the series stop you. The events in book 1 are brought up enough that you know what happened. Perhaps a little too much. But that is a minor complaint. Not only do I recommend this book but I’m going to read more of the series.

A great story with plenty of ethical questions
I love a story where life isn't just a series of black-and-white panels. All the good guys need to have flaws and all the bad guys need redeeming qualities. This, the second in the series of Ted Higuera's and Chris Hardwick's young careers, meets all my requirements for a tale worth reading.
Ted gets his first job in the world of computer security, does well at what he must do, but feels uncomfortable about the sleaziness of client he was assigned. Doing a job well isn't enough. He wants to protect those who couldn't protect themselves. At just that point, he meets Cat Flaherty who offers him what he wants--an opportunity to do good. But even Cat bends the rules more than Ted can tolerate. Along the way, another good person who lives on the edges of the law gets killed, and three persons who live well beyond the line Ted is trying to toe are also killed.
I look forward to more Ted and Cat adventures.

Another GREAT mystery thriller!
HACKER FOR HIRE, the second book in Pendleton Wallace's "Ted Higuera Series" is just as good as the first book. The the characters are just as vibrant with some familiar while others are new. It was interesting experiencing Ted's maturation over the course of this adventure is striking. A total MUST-READ!
