The Sorcerer's Ring #14

An Oath of Brothers

Rate this book
In AN OATH OF BROTHERS, Thorgrin and his brothers emerge from the land of the dead, more driven than ever to find Guwayne, and set sail across a hostile sea, leading them to places beyond their wildest dreams. As they come ever-closer to finding Guwayne, they also encounter obstacles unlike ever before, obstacles which will test them to their very limits, which will call on all their training and force them to stand together as one, as brothers.

Darius stands up to the Empire, boldly amassing an army as he frees one slave village after the next. Facing off against fortified cities, against an army a thousand times his size, he summons all of his instincts and courage, determined to survive, determined to win, to strive for freedom at any cost, even at the cost of his life.

Gwendolyn, with no other choice, leads her people into the Great Waste, deeper into the Empire than anyone has ever journeyed, on a quest to find the legendary Second Ring the last hope for the survival of her people, and the last hope for Darius. Yet along the way she will encounter horrific monsters, worse landscapes, and an insurrection from amidst her own people that even she may not be able to stop.

Erec and Alistair sail for the Empire to save their people, and along the way stop at hidden islands, determined to raise an army even if it means dealing with mercenaries of questionable repute.

Godfrey finds himself deep inside the city of Volusia and deep in trouble as his plan goes from bad to worse. Imprisoned, set to be executed, finally, even he can see no way out.

Volusia forges a pact with the darkest of sorcerers, and driven to even greater heights, she continues her ascent, conquering all who stand in her way. More powerful than ever, she will take her war all the way to the steps of the Empire Capital until she is up against the entire Empire army, an army that dwarfs even her own, setting the stage for an epic battle.

Will Thorgrin find Guwayne? Will Gwendolyn and her people survive? Will Godfrey escape? Will Erec and Alistair reach the Empire? Will Volusia become the next Empress? Will Darius lead his people to victory?

I've never done a review here but I figured it was time.

I enjoy this series. It's nothing highly original and sometimes there are lapses of logic but for a few bucks a book and the couple of hours it takes to read each one it's not bad.

But I hated this book

There will be spoilers ahead.

Outside of Darius and Volusia every story in this book bores me. The search for Guwayne is getting old and the logic of having Ragon having the baby on the same island as Thor but not telling him or making him wait until morning then having Thor leave before it's revealed is stupid. It's treating your readers like morons.

Erek and Gwen's stories both did nothing. From the first chapter of both stories it was painfully obvious where both would end and every chapter leading to that end just seemed to say "don't forget these characters".

And the ending of each story and each plot twist was obvious. I can handle unhappy endings and cliffhangers in a series but when every story ends on a bad note in obvious ways it's frustrating. Thor and the legion "dead" after a storm. Erek and Allistar sold out to the Empire fleet. All of Gwen's people and advisors "dead" in the desert. Darius has his army sold out. Godfrey tricked into selling them out and taken prisoner. Loti sold to a slave caravan.

Volusia got a good ending but how long til we get another anticlimactic villain death like the others. Andronicus dying should have ended a book and after all Romulus did his death comes at an anticlimactic point.

I miss the early books that explored the dynamic of the legion brothers. This book they are just faded into the background. Thor has been the best character but even this book he's just there. The only character I even seemed to care about this book was the Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) rip off Darius.

I used to look forward to these book each month but if this is what we have to expect going forward then I just want it to end. This series has lost something after the book Thor met his mother.

And sorry for any typos. Typing this from my iPhone as I try to work.

The usual again; although the editing was marginally better. I did get a kick out of a monster trying to sink its "clause" into a ship. Someone , obviously, needs a dictionary & thesaurus app. I now believe I am starting to understand why praise for Morgan Rice is always "select." Kissing up to somebody is as good as bribery!

Maar niet teveel woorden aan verspillen. Gelukkig zijn we bijna aan het einde van de serie, maar of er een echte afsluiting komt, geen indee

Why am I still reading these books? Fortunately, I checked them out from the library and haven't wasted money on them. Filled with typos and grammatical errors, these books will leave you in agony as you continue to be befuddled by the lack of character development as the primary characters continue to make one poor decision after another. They don't learn from their mistakes, and thus we are left with few characters remaining from the beginning, and few characters worth caring about. A series that grabbed my attention early, with much promise, has me now feeling that Rice has no idea where these stories are going and no concept of plot and character development. Please, God, let me resist the urge to read the next one, as I'm sure it will only further frustrate me. Please stop writing these books. Do your characters and readers a favor and mercifully end this series!

This is the series that never ends, and it goes on and on my friend! Someone, forgot to edit it and let it wander on, but I'll continue reading it forever just because... This is the series that never ends...

I agree with what so many other readers have said: The lack of character progression is maddening. Thor, especially, just keeps forgetting he has special powers, even after all he's been through, and just makes the same mistakes over and over. How many times do we have to hear Godfrey's inner monologue about how he's not a hero, only to have him miraculously step up once again and save the day. Why does he never think, "Oh, I did that courageous and brave thing just last month, I can do this"?

Plot holes or just lack of any creativity is rampant (spoiler alert): The part about Ragon having Thor's son but not telling him, "saving" that news for the next day - are you kidding me?! That's just ridiculous! And then you want me to believe that someone as powerful as Ragon couldn't stop them from sailing away? Or couldn't even scribble a note on paper and have the dragon deliver it (or an owl, after all, he's a wizard:), or a pigeon)? No, let's just have the dragon circle a couple times over their heads and screech, I'm sure they'll get the message. It's not like they're sailing into mortal danger, or losing his son once again. Come on!

And don't even get me started on all the editing mistakes in this whole series. Spelling, grammar, even saying the wrong character name - on almost every single page there is an error. In every book in the series.

At this point, I'm only reading these to see where it all finally ends, hoping it does. finally. end.

Three more books and I will finally be rid of this horrible series. We get more new characters in this book. Everyone is in peril. The demons from the previous book are causing havoc. Thor was so close to getting his son back, but one of the demons made him leave the island and go to the land of the lepers. There he adopts, I mean saves a 10 year old. Mind you, he's still 15 in this book; only one year has passed since book 1. Gwen and her people are roaming around lost in a desert trying to find the second ring. Some of her people are big mad and try to kill her which means there are barely a dozen of her people left. And when she finally collapses nobody is anywhere near her. Darius was led into an ambush because Godfrey was betrayed. Eric was also betrayed ans has had to surrender. So, everyone is in peril. I can't wait for this series to be over.

The story continues to expand, where characters old and new face terrible odds...

I have the bundle, 13, 14,15 but wanted to post a short review for #14. It's filled with action and imaginative scenarios and I can only hope that all the storylines will converge so the tale can be laid to rest.

Good writing style and tone but in serious need of editing and proofreading.

I am enjoying this epic fantasy, however, I hope it ends well.

Recommended.

So many mistakes

I thought the entire series was a good read. However did anyone bother to read these books for. Typos, mistakes as to which character was speaking or doing the actions? pretty poor editing or proof reading. It made it hard in places to know who was actually speaking or doing the action Did anyone bother to proofread any of these books?if they did they should be fired.

Horrible Editing

So many errors in this book.

My favorite one has to be when the word "salve" was typed instead of slave....clearly we need an editor besides spellchecker

Ugh it's sooo annoying....every single book

Some plot twists, but some are pretty predictable. Just a few more books in the series, then I can move on to another one. There are a number of the wrong words used at times...some better editing perhaps.

Will anyone survive?

It seems that their lives are in peril at every turn of events. I am looking forward to the next book to find out what happens.

In this episode Morgan continues this very entertaining saga. Thorgrin leaves the Land of the Dead with his companions, but one of them decided to stay behind. When they leave, some demons are also released with them. they continue their search for Guwayne and they reach very close to find him. In the meantime, Darius start to build an army by freeing one village at a time from the power of the Empire. Gwendolyn goes with her people to the Great Waste, trying to find the legendary Second Ring, looking for help. Erec and Alistair depart from the South Isles and try to raise an army with the help of mercenaries. Godfrey is fighting for survival inside the city of Volusia. And Volusia wants to become the next Empress and marches toward the capital of the Empire to face all the Empire army.
Packed with action, this book will keep you entertained for hours. And there is not an idle moment until you turn the last page! Get ready for another very entertaining episode of this incredible story. You will not get tired of following Thor, Gwendolyn and all our heroes in this new episode. Just be aware that in order to savor every moment of this episode, I recommend that you start reading from the first episode to better understand the dynamics among the characters, as well as have a full idea on the environment of the story.

I read this book and had to get the other 16 in the series. Not a stand alone book, part of a series and should be read in sequential order...worth the read! I just could not put it down. Some days i read for 8 hours straight. What a great fantasy ride. So much is happening in these books but the author writes it so it is easy to follow, like several little stories happening in one book. The characters I found to visualize, like and or dislike quickly. Descriptions were intense and in depth enough to make me feel as I were there in the story as a character myself.

If you like action, romance, fantasy, magic, castles, knights, battles of good and evil and valor then you will love this series. There is gruesome killing but the author does not go into a deep description and make it gory. There is great love and romance but nothing even pg rated. Lots of fantasy but not to extravagant. It amazes me how creative this author is and I constantly wondered "what in the world will happen next?".

To me a perfect story, a perfect read, and i think it would make a great movie! Reminded me a bit of the "Lord of the Rings. I would highly recommend this series and this author to anyone that even considers these mixed genres.

Brothers do not abandon one another!

Brothers do not abandon one another!

Volusia is building a army. She has killed the Prince of Maltolisan, taken his army and now marches to Dansk. Her goal is to capture the capital of the Empire. Then all will bow to her Goddess of the Empire. Thorgrin is still in search of Guwayne and Gwendolyn is searching for the second ring. Darious has rallied the slaves and are fighting. Eric, Alistair and Strom are heading for the Empire to assist Gwendolyn. Godfrey and his companions are betrayed and imprisoned. The Battle for freedom is mounting and also the Battle for life. There is deceptions and betrayal on all sides. This story is so incredibly moving you must read on.

Good Sequel

In the fourteenth installment of author Morgan Rice's Sorcerer's Ring saga, Thor and his companions depart the domain of the deceased in continued search of his lost son Guwayne, along the way taking a girl named Angel under his wing. Meanwhile, Darius faces off against the Empire with an amassing army of emancipated slaves. Furthermore, Gwendolyn leads her people into the Great Waste in continued search of the fabled Second Ring in want of a new home for her population, whilst a power struggle occurs within the Empire, this entry is largely on par with its predecessors, a good thing, although this reviewer became slightly confused in the final chapter, given the occasional long breaks between character perspectives, a cliffhanger terminating the tale.

I really enjoy this series. I would recommend it to anyone. I thought this book was interesting because Thor and the Legion went into the Land of the Dead. As Thor emerges from the Land of the Dead he is more drive then ever to hide Guwayne, and set to sail across hostile sea leading them to places beyond their wildest dreams. They have came close several time in finding Guwayne but always fell just short of getting him. At times Thor was losing hope but never gave up the fact he would find him. Gwendolyn had no choice but to take her people to the Great Waste, deeper into the Empire than anyone has ever journeyed on a quest to find a legendary Second Ring.

Disppointing.

The story advances ... but the chacracters don't. There is no apparent logic behind their actions.

Thor being king of druids and yet not using it's powers enrages me. Sometimes I feel like the author forgot about Thorgin's special powers.

I basically read this serie to know how it will end. I hope it will soon conclude.

Bravo
