Started watching Na PD's 1N2D Season 1 sometime in 2009 which was the so-called golden era with high ratings. Every Sunday was a joy as the program not only offered laughs but also meaningful themes such as the foreign workers SP. Of course, the way it ended wasn't that pleasant and subsequent seasons tried to replicate the same formula but with varying success. Personally, I think the current Season 4 is doing very well in a different way from Na PD's era.
Na PD then moved on to tvN where he churned out various successful shows - some seemingly mundane and silly but turned out to be very interesting in the end. I think the only show which I didn't like was Little House in the Woods which was too slow to my liking. I accidentally read about this book of his where he talked about the behind-the-scenes stories about 1N2D and his trip to Iceland after the program ended so I decided to get the Chinese version since my Korean is not good enough to understand the whole book.
The behind-the-scenes stories about 1N2D were very funny and interesting especially how the program was never expected to become a hit but they accidentally struck jackpot with it. I would have preferred more about this section but this had nothing to do with the Iceland part being boring though. In fact, the Iceland trip wasn't a typical travelogue - it was more about his intention to take a break from his busy life and reflect before deciding on what to do next. Since I'm around the same age as him when he embarked on that trip, I could understand his thoughts which resonated a lot with me. At certain ages, we tend to think a lot more about our lives and wonder if we should continue with what we are doing or do something different. It takes a lot of courage to change especially when we get older so this is a timely reminder that sometimes we shouldn't confine ourselves within a self-set boundary and we should step out of our comfort zone with courage.
