Sexy Kauai detective and part-time fire dancer Roland Sharpe rushes to Em's side along with the unpredictable Hula Maidens, whose detective skills are even more haphazard than their dance routine at the island tiki bars. I live on Oahu so it was fun to read about "my" island this time. One thing kinda bugged me though. Louis had his Booze Bible stolen and they act like the recipes are gone and lost forever. But wouldn't the bar have a record of them so the bartenders could make them? Or wouldn't the bartenders know the recipes after making so many of them? I can see that not all of the drinks would be remembered but enough that he would have something for the competition. That part made me go hmm, but other than that, it was another fun book in the series.

I'm not really sure why people rate this 5 stars. It was definitely a fun, easy read, but nothing spectacular. The mystery wasn't complicated, the characters themselves are pretty outlandish, but overall a fun island escape. I haven't read any of the other hula mysteries and probably won't, but this was still fun. A solid 3 stars for entertainment purposes only.

Fun in Honolulu

While Uncle Louie heads to Oahu for The Western Regional Cocktail Competition, The Hula Maidens decide to tag along. Soon Em is called to their rescue when they are all in jail, but the tables turn when Em’s Ex is found dead and she is declared “a person of interest”. Crazy fun in Honolulu!

Cocktail shake off

Uncle Louie, Em and the Maidens head to Oahu where Uncle Louie has entered a contest to see who makes the best one. The Maidens start dancing wherever they can attract a crowd, Uncle Louie looses his recipe book, Em’s ex-husband shows up and pretty soon the police show up. Just a typical day in paradise,,,

(E-Lib) I finished the 3rd book and was wondering what to read next. Surprise! This 4th book was available from the library!! I swear at the end of the last book, they said the Shake Off Regionals were going to be in LA, but it was still fun having the gang go to Oahu for this book. I'm glad Em and Roland are moving forward with their relationship.

I loved this and have ordered the first book in the series. it's just as cheesy as tiki bars but I really enjoy things that don't take themselves too seriously. this is the first book of the series that I've read but it wasn't a challenge as everything is explained well without being pedantic. the characters were well developed and individual, although it was hard to remember exactly who was who in the hula maidens zoo. my main problem was the monkey. I feel those are being overdone; surely there are other chaotic animals that can be used. not to mention, the monkey was apparently acquired from one of the Shriners days before their convention started.

Em Johnson and her Uncle Louie are headed to Honolulu for the Annual Cocktail Shake Off Competition, Western Division. The night before they leave, they are informed by Kiki and the rest of the “Hula Maidens” that they will be joining them. Although Em isn’t too happy about it, both her and her Uncle Louie are resigned to the fact that these catastrophe-finding women are going to join them.

When Em arrives, she tells Louie that her ex-husband Phillip called and wants to see her. When their marriage ended badly (due to Phillip’s over-spending and con artist ways), Em agrees, thinking that at least she will be able to gain closure. However, when she meets Phillip, he isn’t alone. He has brought along his plastic Barbie doll girlfriend, Felicity Duncan, who is younger and obviously high-maintenance. After an uncomfortable lunch, she tells Phillip goodbye and heads back to her hotel, realizing that the past is past and he is never going to change.

Shortly thereafter, Em and Louie discover his famous “Booze Bible” is missing, and purportedly stolen. Em is sure the thief is someone attending the convention, and decides to ‘go undercover’ at the costume party to see if she can find the guilty party. After she is nearly arrested for burglary (it’s a long story), Roland, her almost-boyfriend-police-detective from Kauai appears on the scene and agrees to keep an eye on her in return for her being released on her own recognizance. It turns out that Nat, another friend and neighbor on Kauai, had to leave for Los Angeles but called Roland realizing that Em needed help. So when Phillip is discovered dead the next morning, Em is on the suspect short list. With two mysteries to solve, the Hula Maidens are on it – without telling anyone.

I don’t want to say more than that, because I would be giving too much away. This book was truly hilarious. You have the “Hula Maidens,” six hula-dancing (or what they think passes for it) elderly ladies dancing whenever they hear Hawaiian music (including on the plane), and trying to avoid being arrested for the same; Little Estelle, the ninety-year-old mother of one of the women trying her best to ‘get it on’ with any available good-looking man and disappears for hours at a time; and a cocktail-taste-testing Capuchin monkey that hates women and loves alcohol (this is really funny and has a significant part in the book).

At any rate, this is the fourth book in the series and a must-read even if you haven’t read the first three. That shouldn’t stop you because it can be read as a stand-alone as need be; but I would recommend going back to read the others. Highly recommended.

Too Hot for Hula by Jill Marie Landis (Book 4 of The Tiki Goddess Mysteries)

5 STARS

I was waiting for this book. I love the Tiki Goddess Mysteries. They are full of laughter, wacky characters that are fun to follow,
mystery, some romance. You can't read the series without smiling.

Uncle Louie owns the Tiki Goddess Bar on Kauai. He is entered the Cocktail Shake Off. They had one season on reality tv filming of life in Tiki Goddess Bar. So he is well known. He has been mixing drinks and long tales for decades and hand writing them all in a binder he calls it his Booze Bible. His parrot helps him perfect his drinks.

Em Johnson went through a bad divorce and came over from mainland to help her Uncle Louie manage his bar. She is dating Roland.

Roland is Kauai police detective and part-time fire dancer. They met over a murder.

Hula Maidens perform for free at the Tiki Goddess Bar. They are terrible. Most of them are older women. They are famous from the reality show too. They have lots of fans. They get into trouble all the time. They love to perform wherever they can. Em tries to keep them out of trouble.

The Hula Maidens surprise Louie and Em by joining them in Honolulu to support Louie in the Shake Off. Uncle Louie gets his Booze Bible stolen with in the first half hour of checking into the hotel. Em's ex-husband calls her up and asks her to meet him for lunch. He is going to be in Honolulu the same time as she.

The book is full of the troubles they all get into in Honolulu. Rolland takes vacation to come over and help Em get out of trouble, clear her of murder, help find the Booze Bible.

If you like cozy murder with lots of good humor this series you will love. It is a clean read. I hope their is more books in the series I will want to read them.

Too Hot Four Hula by Jill Marie Landis is really a funny mystery with a touch of romance. And if you are familiar with Hawaii and Hawaiian culture or just like learning more about it, the book also provides for that in subtle ways. Bits of culture and words are sprinkled throughout and explained within context giving the book even more of a Hawaiian feel.

My synopsis:
Em's Uncle Louie, owner of the Tiki Goddess bar and master mixologist, has entered the Cocktail Shake Off Competition in Honolulu on Oahu. Em and the Hula Maidens have accompanied him from Kauai. Louie's "Booze Bible" was stolen. And to make things worse, Em's ex-husband was killed shortly after she met with him. Who has the drink bible? Em's alibi stinks for the murder. Will Roland, her lovely cop and part-time fire dancer from Kauai, be able to keep her out of jail? Will the Hula Maidens provide more help than hindrance as they take it upon themselves to solve the mysteries? Throw in a monkey and even more chaos ensues.

This is the fourth book in the Tiki Goddess Mystery series. Jill Marie Landis continues to write winners in this series. The characters that are most active are fleshed out. Both their virtues and their faults are visible and yet they are lovable. For example, the Hula Maidens wouldn't be the same without Kiki Godwin, who craves attention, to lead them and Pat, who is former military, but has no sense of rhythm, to keep them in line. The Hula Maidens also provide comic relief at times when the mystery is getting too heavy.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's a great addition to the series. All the characters act true to themselves. The book has mystery, humor, and a dash of romance - a wonderful combination. I would recommend it to people that like to read about the Hawaiian Islands and people who enjoy humorous cozies.

Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people. - King Kalakaua

The gang from the Tiki Goddess - Uncle Louis, his niece Em, and the Hula Maidens - leave the comfort of Kauai for the Cocktail Shake Off on Waikiki Beach, Oahu. It may be a quick 40 minute flight to Honolulu, but the Hilton Hawaiian Village is a world away as Oahu's premier tourist mecca. The gang are out of their league among the competitive bartenders, beauty product conventioneers, and fans of the Hula Maidens (from their ill fated reality show). Uncle Louis' effort to win the title is hindered by the theft of his famous Booze Bible, the Maidens' impromptu hula shows, and Em's unexpected lunch date with her ex husband.

Chaos erupts when the Maidens search Oahu's questionable neighborhoods for the Booze Bible, the Shriners arrive at the hotel, and Em is accused of murdering her ex husband. Landis delivers the Aloha spirit in this cozy mystery with Hawaii's beauty as the backdrop. The Maidens stand out in TOO HOT FOUR HULA with their quick thinking at every challenge that comes their way. Their antics at the Aloha Stadium Flea Market is pure pleasure. The icing on top is Em's reward for watching out for Uncle Louis and the Hula Maidens - no spoilers here!

Recommended read for fans of cozy mysteries, laugh-out-loud adventure, and Hawaiian culture. TOO HOT FOUR HULA is outrageously funny, just as Jill Marie Landis intended.

The Tiki Goddess mysteries are my idea of perfect late January reading. Being mentally transported to warm, sunny Hawaii and laughing at the antics of the Hula Maidens does a great job of off-setting the mid-winter blues.

Too Hot Four Hula, the fourth in the series, is my favorite so far. Fresh from their canceled reality tv show, the attention hound Hula Maidens invite themselves along on a trip with Em and Uncle Louie when he goes to compete in a mixology contest. It is a hoot. The Hula Maidens can be a little self involved, but they are loveable screwballs. The scene where Louie presents his new cocktail recipe in the competition in particular is sheer brilliance.

I liked that Landis throws in a lot of tidbits about Tiki culture throughout the book. That helps the reader feel more immersed in the setting. It's so fun and interesting that I am having to fight off the urge to put a Tiki bar in my basement. Landis includes cocktail recipes at the end of each novel,so I've got something to start with.

As for the mystery aspect, we get a double dose of mixed quality. The key to one of the mysteries was frankly something that the cops should have thought of right off the bat. I can forgive that because the other was really clever, solved by acute observation and sharp thinking. Who knew that a Hula Maiden had Sherlock Holmesian powers of deduction?

I hope that Landis enjoys writing these as much as I do reading them, because I am already looking forward to the next one.

I received a free kindle copy of Too Hot Four Hula, Book 4 in the Tiki Goddess Mystery Series by Jill Marie Landis published by Bell Bridge Books from Net Galley in exchange for a fair review.

I gave it four stars because it made me laugh. It reminded me of Janet Evanovich's Grandma Mazur times five or six with the Hula Maidens who are a disaster waiting to happen.

Em Johnson is a crime sleuth who is called Nancy Drew by Kauai detective and part-time fire dancer Roland Sharpe. They have emotional sparks flying like his fire dance. Will she succumb to his sexy smile?

Em's Uncle Louie is going to a Cocktail Shake Off on the big island when his 'Booze Bible' is stolen. He is devastated because it's his life's work in one illustrated, alcohol splattered book. Can it be found before the Shake Off? Who was the base-ball hatted culprit who sneaked into Louie's room when he left the door ajar to get ice? Can he be captured by the Hula Maidens?

It is an entertaining & quite funny novel filled with hair pulling monkeys & a pirate costumed Em who is taken in by the police.

I don't know why I enjoy these books so much, but I do. Wacky old haole hula dancers, murder, the Hawaiian setting, and a very likable heroine combine into a fun time. That said, I had some reservations about some certain depictions, and the amount of typos in the print copy was almost criminal. I will read the next one, but I don't want to pay for the privilege.

Uncle Louie loses his Booze Bible just before the a National Shakedown. The recipes and the legends are gone. But the Hula Maidens are there to cheer on Louie, drink some Mai Tais, and go into detective mood, much to Em's and Roland's chagrin.

Loved it! Em and the Hula Maidens take you into trouble, mystery, danger and fun. There is a hint of romance and a good story, and it takes place in Hawaii, what more could you ask on a cold winter day in WI?
