Published in 1968, this volume is an enjoyable compendium of stories and rhymes to be read to the very young.

It includes:
-lullabies and bedtime stories
-games to play with baby
-Mother Goose rhymes
-well-known folk tales
-animal stories
-stories about things that go
-classic children's poetry
-stories about a child's everyday life
-beginning reading and counting
-nonsense poems and stories
-fables and animal origin stories
-Christmas songs, poems, stories
-short prayers and table graces

The first in a series of story collections, this particular volume seems geared toward children ages 0-6 or so. We read it at age 3 over the course of several months, and it was greatly enjoyed by both the preschooler and the mama. Some stories were better than others, but overall it was a big win; we'll probably revisit it each year until kindergarten.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books together through the years, too; they look good! Volume 2 is titled, "Happy Hours in Storyland" and seems like a perfect book for kindergarten. 😊

Read the short story The Banyan Deer, a fable about a leader willing to sacrifice himself to protect a mother and child. Simple and brave (and fortunately has a happy ending).
