Big fan of Eiji. He was awesome against Ippo and he’s awesome against Martinez. Morikawa does so well making him a deeply layered character with all the heart and all the flaws to make ya root for him.

The underlying drama of Date needing to beat Martinez on a personal level is so compelling. It’s just ludicrous enough to feel real, to make Date feel like any other insecure and fragile man. I love that the way he thinks his family perceives him, and not how they actually do, is so starkly contrasted and drives his character. This bout is as much about them as it is himself.

Martinez is larger-than-life. He oozes capability and confidence in a way that still has humility and respect for Eiji. He’s written to be a great representation of the WBA Champ.

The buildup to the fight is great, and as an MMA fan, tickled me pink. Morikawa being a boxer and fan himself bleeds through the pages, and the preamble to this super-fight shows it again. The media days, the interviews, the camp drama is all so markedly real. Funny to read a fictional story thats greatly exaggerated is still so close to the genuine article.

The match is great. It sucks and it’s great. Hate to see the “hero” get dominated, but it does a lot; it completes Eiji’s arc, gives Ippo a new goal, and builds Martinez up even more as a boogeyman.

A shocking conclusion to Date's match and Ippo's next opponent is revealed. Also, an old friend returns...

Really love Hajime no ippo!! Easily my favorite sports manga/anime, it’s a lot more than just the boxing! Great character development and story outside the sports part!😁👌🥊🥊❤️
