The European Love Affair #2

My Italian Love Affair

Rate this book
When my boss shipped me off to Rome for three months to cover football - a sport I know next to nothing about - I thought it was going to be a disaster.

And then I met Matteo Rossi.

Smug, arrogant, and so infuriatingly full of himself, Matteo is the very definition of a walking ego.

Unfortunately for me, he's also maddeningly gorgeous and the star player everyone's obsessed with.

I should've brushed off his irritating smirks and infuriating one-liners, but the media caught onto our on-camera tension, and suddenly, the world is obsessed with the so-called ‘banter' between us - apparently oblivious to the fact that we honest-to-god cannot stand each other.

Now, my boss wants me to work with Matteo more often to boost views, Matteo is loving every second of my discomfort, and I'm stuck spending way more time with a man who pushes all my buttons...for better or worse.

But the more I get to know him, the more I is Matteo really the insufferable asshole I pegged him as, or have I been too quick to judge?

The lines between rivalry and something far more dangerous are blurring fast.

And when it comes to Matteo Rossi...losing might just mean falling.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Rome, My Italian Love Affair is a sizzling enemies-to-lovers sports romance that blends fiery banter with irresistible chemistry. Daphne and Matteo's story crackles with tension as they navigate their differences and find themselves in a forced proximity situation neither of them asked for.

Perfect for readers who love sharp wit, sizzling chemistry, and heartfelt emotional moments, this novel delivers detailed, steamy scenes alongside sweet and tender interactions. With laugh-out-loud humour, authentic sports journalism insights and the breathtaking charm of Italy as its backdrop, My Italian Love Affair is a must-read for fans of hate-to-love dynamics and unforgettable love stories.

This a nice slow burn with all the feels!!!

I loved the way both FMCs were wrote in this book and my Spanish love affair! This was a whirlwind, that had me very much laughing out like at times! I loved the banter between daph & matteo! Lovef that she touched on how women are still looked down upon in the work industry and definitely a male dominate one at that!

Definitely a good read if youre looking for something sweet and slightly spicey!🌶️🌶️

Before I talk about the book, a quick word about the author: Melissa Jane is a survivor of abuse who traveled around Europe after escaping her situation, and that’s where she found the inspiration to write. My Italian love affair is the second in a series set in different European countries they can be read as standalones, the first is My Spanish love affair.
This story is about Daphne, a determined journalist sent to Italy to cover football events. She’s stuck in a male dominated industry with a misogynistic supervisor (I have personal beef with Mark) but she’s tough and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Then, she meets him (no spoilers here, you’ll have to figure that out yourself!).
I don’t usually read sports romance I’m more into dark romance or romantasy, but this one was a breath of fresh air. It’s fun, light, and perfect for a beach day read. Daphne is the kind of girl I’d love to be friends with, she’s totally a “girl’s girl.” It gave me Emily in Paris vibes, but honestly, Daphne is way cooler.
It’s an “enemies to lovers” romance with funny teasing, slow burn, and lots of yearning. What I loved most is how he’s not shy about showing his feelings for her, no matter who’s around. It’s definitely a 5 star read, and I’m excited to check out more of Melissa Jane’s books!

A slow burn, forced proximity, spicy read!!

Melissa always creates such an easy, enjoyable read! Likeable characters, good plot and an MMC you could drool over! And of course great spice!!

Matteo Rossi, a football player with an ego bigger than a football pitch. A man like Matteo knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to get it, and it just so happens to be Daphne Sinclair, a journalist covering football in Rome.
As soon as she arrives she’s made to feel like she doesn’t belong in a world of football journalism by her mentor, the worlds most sexist man. Honestly the feminist in me was RAGING at Mark Chapman.
Matteo knows how to push every single one of Daphnes buttons. Daphne thinks he’s cocky and infuriating but also irresistible.

Thank you Melissa for creating Matteo Rossi!!

I loved reading this ARC! I couldn’t put it down and even when I did all I could think about was finishing it!

Slow burn, he falls first, and my favorite enemies to lovers 😫

Matteo the star player and Daphne the journalist who’s on contract to cover the Roma team for 3 months! The spice, banter, and forbidden love will have you in a chokehold!

“You're mine now, Daphne. And nobody is going to hurt you again." 💗

Wow what a ride!! I love a good sports romance and an enemies to lovers one as well....well lets just say it was a rollercoaster of a ride with plenty of angst and emotions thrown in!
Daphne, a journalist in London, is sent to Rome to cover the football series for 3 months.
A woman in a male dominated world, Daphne was up against the odds before she even stepped off of the plane.
Matteo, the star of the Roma football club was all that one would expect from an elite athlete.
Unfortunately for Daphne, being mentored by an older journalist, Mark, who despised women in his workplace, set out to make her life difficult whilst she was there.
Matteo first set eyes on Daphne at an end of match journalist meet. He could not take his eyes off of her and when he was in front of her waiting for a question...he could do nothing but give off the cuff one word answers...which made the tensions rise between them!
And so the story begins of an elite athlete falling hard and fast...oh and first, for a red headed journalist who did not bow down to him like other women...in fact he was certain she perhaps hated him!! which she did by the way!!
The chemistry is off the charts hot as Matteo woos Daphne, who refuses to give into his attempts as she is fed lies by her mentor on what Matteo is and what he thinks of Women in men's sport, especially journalists!
You just have to fall for Matteo, He is but a big teddy bear hiding behind a high wall as he navigates the world of professional football.
When things finally heat up between them, and they have explosive sex for the first time....Ah lets just say it was worth the wait!
A nice slow burn romance with all the feels by Melissa Jane does not disappoint and somehow Daphne and Matteo do finally reach their HEA!

Who doesn’t love a good sports romance? I truly enjoyed our FMC. Young professional, trying to make her way and then, boom, boss dumps her into soccer journalism. What could go wrong? A misogynistic supervisor and a grumpy player, that’s what.
This is set up to be a slow burn enemies to lovers, however, I have thoughts:

1) The enemies to lovers bit: it’s giving Wall of Winnipeg vibes from both parties. They both have zero personality at the beginning of the story. They barely grumble, it’s low angst and tension aside from her saying, “I hate you.” Make me FEEL it. More banter and wit please! Even after they combust they still don’t have each others numbers, nor do they communicate outside of work until page 350+. I would love some sweet moments, too. Also, the MCs have very little back story. I don’t know why I’m supposed to root for them or be invested in them for most of the book.

2) The slow burn? Giiiirrrrrllll. 🥵 We love a good “eff it” moment. This book delivers on the spice. I’m not mad about it. However, it isn’t until page 350+ that Daphne stops treating this like a casual hookup, which seems odd to me knowing there’s a HEA. Catch some sort of feelings for this hot Italian, please!!

I appreciate that Daphne is stubborn and willing to try to solve her own work issues, but I loved the white knight moment for Matteo.

I would have loved for the main characters to have had friends that were well developed. FMC has one friend she video chats throughout but it’s rare. I wished she was coming for a visit to size up Matteo the whole time. Developing secondary characters in a book this long to me is critical.

All in all I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the other one in the series. Thank you for the ARC opportunity!

✨Slow Burn
✨Italian MMC
✨Banter
✨Enemies to Lovers
✨He falls first

If I could jump into a book and become the FMC it would be this book. Matteo Rossi yes please! He has shot to the list of top book boyfriends for sure.

Daphne our FMC is a journalist who gets the opportunity to be "promoted" to go live in Rome for 3 months, to cover the Roma football team. She knew she was entering foreign territory and she would have to work twice as hard to make a name for herself in the mostly male dominated area of sports journalism. She didn't know quite how difficult it would be until meeting her senior journalist Mark, and who she thought was the egotistical rude star of the team she was covering, Matteo.

Matteo (MMC), Roma's star player; hates media time, that is until he sets his eyes on her. He has never been one to focus on anything other than soccer, but no matter what he can't stop thinking about Daphne. It starts with just banter during media time but slowly turns into more.

I absolutely love the dynamic of these two. The banter between the two is next level and I love that it doesn't slow down throughout their whole time knowing each other. And the fact that Matteo is such a golden retriever for her but will also burn the world for her, absolutely everything.

Thank you so much Melissa Jane for letting me read this ARC early. All thoughts in this review are my own.

My Italian love affair is officially out🥳🩷

This is the 2nd book this the European love affair series and I love it so much. 5/5 ⭐️ Matteo has stolen my heart.. for now until the next 2 men come stumbling in 😏

Daphne is a journalist from London who gets the opportunity to travel to Rome for 3 months to interview and write about football and hopefully finish writing her novel. She’s stuck with these pr*cks of male journalists who know women shouldnt be apart of this world and she’s just there to be pretty. Then she sees Mateo Rossi at the press conference and both of their worlds flip upside down.
Mateo Rossi wants nothing to do with press but he has to keep up with appearances as any athlete does. He fakes a smile every time and says generic answers every wants to hear so he can leave, but since he spotted Daphne, all he wants is to go up to her and answer her questions. Once he gets to know Daphne, there’s no turning back.

“And now because you have the emotional maturity of a breadstick, you can’t stop thinking about it. “😂 I adore the side characters so much.

Oh how I would love to be in Rome drinking wine on my balcony with Daphne 🍷 Oh how I’d love to have Matteo stand up for me against those ahole men journalists who think I’m just a pretty face and spoil me rotten💚

Matteo Rossi 🔥
I devoured this book in the best possible way! Daphne is a strong woman who has been thrust into the male dominated world of sport’s journalism, specifically football. This was never part of her plan, but despite the challenging and somewhat awful men she meets along the way, Daphne holds her head high.
And then there’s Roma’s football sensation, Matteo Rossi. He doesn’t exactly make life easy for her either. But he has that whole Italian gorgeousness and charm about him and soon sparks fly. I have loved reading Daphne and Matteo’s story and in parts (many parts) I found myself just grinning along with their antics. There is plenty of spice, but there’s also a beautiful story. Rome is described so well by Melissa Jane that I can actually imagine it, taste it even!
This is a light romance book with lots of spice. If you enjoy heart warming and fun stories, then I highly recommend.
As an add on - I think the way Melissa Jane highlighted how woman are still fighting an uphill battle in the workplace, hits home. Despite being the hardest worker on the team, Daphne was overlooked by the vile Mark Chapman! I loved it!

As an ARC reader, I was thrilled to be picked and to dive into My Italian Love Affair, and Melissa’s writing did not disappoint! Her style is effortless and engaging, making this an easy read that pulls you in from the very first page.

One of the standout elements of this book is how seamlessly it weaves sports into the romance. As a sports lover, I appreciated how that world played a role in the story without overpowering the emotional depth of the characters. It’s a perfect blend that adds an extra layer of excitement to the already captivating

The enemies-to-lovers trope is executed flawlessly making it nearly impossible to put the book down. Their journey from rivals to something more is filled with witty banter, emotional moments, and just the right amount of drama. It was sweet but spicy!

If you love romance with a sports element and an enemies-to-lovers dynamic, My Italian Love Affair is a must-read! I can’t wait for more of the European Love Affair Series.

What a fun feeling to be in Italy to meet the most aggravating soccer player!

This slow slow burn romance gave me all the feels as the end! We have a man who falls first, who goes to bat for her, respects her boundaries and makes her feel like she is the only woman in the world. Daphne and Matteo are a true slow burn romance with dislike on her end and instant attraction on his end with a side of cocky.

Their chemistry on page is so good! Daphne is a journalist who is super smart and is on assignment for 3 months in Rome covering the Roma soccer team. Matteo is our soccer legend who is portrayed as cocky but really he is an overprotective, witty banter, hot Italian man.

Their story is told over the 3 months and we have a side story that really resonates with today and just the way women are viewed in society and just how awesome Daphne overcomes that.

If you love sports romances with a strong FMC and protective MMC. You will love this!

When I got the opportunity to review this book as a ARC I was so happy! And OMG this book lived up to my expectations and more. I freaking love Matteo! I knew I’d love him as soon as I met him - what I didn’t expect was to love Daphne as much as I did too! She’s working in a male dominated environment and whilst this is a light fluffy romance I think it’s brilliant how Melissa Jane hints on the work place sexism that Daphne experiences. I don’t want to add spoilers, but Mark Chapman grrrrrrrrr! IYKYK!!
If you enjoyed my Spanish Love Affair - you’ll love this! I actually think I prefer this book because so much is going on - and Matteo Rossi of course is my new dream man! Plenty of spice but not enough to detract from the actual story - I loved it! 5 🌟 from me!

*I received this book as an arc for an honest review*

This is the second book in a fantastic series, I did get the honour to arc read the first book as well. Sometimes when a series isn’t interconnected but has similar aspects I find that they can be repetitive. The only thing repetitive about this series is that Melissa can create a fantastic book boyfriend. I swear each time I read a book from this series I get so envious that I don’t have someone just like her mmc. Pure gold! If you ever want to read a book that encompasses the daydream about living somewhere else and having a Lizzie McGuire moment (but sports) this is the series for you! I cannot wait to find out what is up next for this series!!!

Daphne’s dream assignment? Not quite. She gets shipped off to Rome to cover a sport she barely knows, ends up with a sexist boss, and is forced to deal with Matteo Rossi—the infuriatingly hot footballer with a smirk that makes ignoring him impossible.

Their banter becomes a media sensation, and now she’s stuck playing nice with the guy who pushes all her buttons… and not always in a bad way. What starts as forced proximity turns into flirty chaos, simmering tension, and one very inconvenient crush.

Melissa Jane brings the heat, the humor, and just the right dose of workplace drama. If you love sharp-tongued heroines, cocky heroes with secret soft sides, and banter that could light Rome on fire—this one’s for you.

I loved this! I am so grateful to have received an ARC. I could not put this down! This was such a cute enemies to lovers romance with spice in all the right places.

Daphne heads to Rome for 3 months to interview, and write about a football team. There is major tension between her and football star Matteo Rossi. The fans are eating it up so her boss makes sure there are more interviews and interaction between the two. While there are feelings there for Mateo, she is also dealing with the misogyny of working in a male dominating field, and how that might affect how she’s viewed as a new sports writer. The banter is great and really has you rooting for them the entire time.

I mean what’s not to love?! Sports, spice, he falls first, enemies to lovers and Italy! This book was fantastic ♥️

A dual POV, steamy slowburn, enemies to lovers romantic comedy.

I devoured this book like my soul depended on it. Reading My Italian Love Affair by Melissa Jane is like taking a deep intoxicating breath of air after being underwater.

It's fun, light hearted, sassy! The story flows beautifully, the relationship dynamic is gorgeous filled with relatable emotions without being borderline toxic.

Reading Daphne and Matteo's story has me itching for sequel!

PS. The spice is steamy, well balanced and overall 🥵.

OMG what a slow burn that was (In a good way) Who doesn't love a slow burn with yearning and lots of banter?! I love Daphne and Matteo and the banter back and forth they have and how their relationship went from 'enemies to lovers'. I also really enjoyed how Daphne held her own as a sports journalist in a man dominated industry, also finally finding her inspiration to write her book! This is the second book in the European Love Affair series (they are stand alones) and I love reading a romance that takes place in a romantic setting with romantic men 🤌😘

ARC Review
If you love an enemies-to-lovers romance packed with chemistry and banter that will have you smiling, My Spanish Love Affair needs to be on your TBR!

Our heroine is strong, intelligent, and ambitious — a journalist traveling to Rome for her latest assignment, where she crosses paths with Matteo, a world-famous, cocky soccer player who lives for soccer and now also to rile her up. Their back-and-forth banter is absolute perfection, and the enemies-to-lovers tension is everything I could hope for: fiery, slow-burn, and deliciously frustrating in the best way.

What I really appreciated is how Melissa Jane brings attention to the gender gap in sports journalism. The challenges our FMC faces in a male-dominated industry are portrayed so well, and I loved seeing how she holds her own with strength and grace, never backing down, even when faced with sexism or doubt. It adds so much depth to her character and the story.

And yes — the spice? Be spicing. Perfectly timed, steamy, and full of chemistry that leaps off the page.

This book is fun, fiery, empowering, and full of heart. Highly recommend!

This had all the ingredients I usually love—sports romance, hate-to-love tension, and snappy banter—but it didn’t quite land for me. The pacing dragged with too much inner monologue and not enough plot momentum, especially in the middle. While the last 20% picked up nicely, I was left wanting more agency from the FMC—particularly in how the workplace conflict was resolved. I also wish she had more personality beyond her career. That said, the Rome setting was charming, the chemistry was there, and I appreciated the absence of a third-act breakup. Just not the knockout I was hoping for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am not usually one who likes a lot of scene description, but I loved her description of Rome and its atmosphere. There is a lot of great witty banter between the main characters, Daphne and Matteo, along with steamy scenes. What Daphne has to deal with in a male dominated job/world is relevant and relatable, yet she perseveres and with Matteo's support, is the better for it. Great sports romance, definitely a good read.

The writing is very good. Some of the books on KU have me banging my head 2 pages in - not this one! The writing is descriptive - I love how she wrote about Rome. I could feel myself there.
Daphne is a strong FMC. Richard is awful and then we meet the asshole Mark! Thankfully, whilst working in the sports field, she meets another arrogant ass, who is actually the swoon worthy Matteo Rossi!
There is spice 🥵 and laughs along the way. Really enjoyed it!

I loved being an arc reader for this book!
A really great slow burn enemies to lovers and he falls first, and boy does he fall hard.
Not only the romance side of the story got me hooked, but also the journalist story line with shining the light on how females are looked down upon in the industry.
The banter between Mateo and Daphne had me laughing out loud at times which doesn’t happen often.
A really great and wholesome read. I’d love to see a sequel to this one!!

Melissa Jane had me sucked in right from the start. I love how she was able to show that both Daphne and Matteo are able to be the best at their own passions in life, but not diminish the fire that burns in the other person. It is how a relationship is supposed to be. Always supportive.

This is a slow burn and I don’t always like those, but it is worth it in the end to see how their relationship grows.

This adorable contemporary love story has a spicy side that keeps on giving.
We follow along on Daphne's journey to Italy to try her hand at sports journalism, allowing us to feel her excitement, anger, and frustration as she deals with learning the job and sexism. The hot and cold of her tension with Matteo and the struggles in her job kept me engaged and emotional the whole time.

The Italian setting provides a dreamy, charming setting befitting Matteo and Daphne's story.
The writing is easy, entertaining, and enjoyable.
The banter between Matteo and Daphne is hilarious and 🔥🔥. It ends with a satisfying HEA. It gave me Abby Jimenez vibes!

Second book in this series might be better than the first! I loved the tension connection between Daphne and Matteo! Made me want to be in the press room watching that built up sexual tension play out. Highly recommend this book, and while you can read the series in any order, I recommend going ahead and reading them all. Can’t wait to read the third installment!

I got to read this as an ARC.
It’s a great 2nd book in a series! It will engulf you with him falling first and the slow burn romance. A sprinkle of spice 🌶️🌶️ , and it made me laugh out loud in some areas. It’s a refreshing sports romance that does NOT involve hockey (😆, I think there’s too much hockey romance anymore). I enjoyed getting to know Daphne and Matteo. There was good character development and I enjoyed how they intertwined.

Daphne and Matteo were such a perfect match. Getting to go on another sports romance adventure with Melissa Jane to Italy was such a fun experience. I really enjoyed the fiesty FMC mixing with a playful but serious MMC. Plus being able to watch Daphnes growth in an industry that is skewed against her was wonderful. I loved the journey that they took to get to each other, and that there was not a heartbreaking third act breakup.
