Recently promoted to Rear Admiral, Rupert Buck’s flag flies aloft HMS Trident as his squadron is formed. Captain Sir Gabriel Anthony, England’s latest hero, has been chosen as flag captain. What was to have been a routine mission has suddenly been changed by the Foreign Services Office. American privateers have joined with the French to raid British convoys returning from the Indian Ocean. Buck’s squadron has to immediately weigh anchor and rush to meet this new threat. A sudden crisis develops and Gabe finds himself thrust into command of the squadron. I am most of the way through this recent title by Monica Ramirez. It is a very interesting read. In many respects it is a very good page turner and the quality of the story is laid out very well for the reader offering both of the main characters perspective. I always like that part because it gives you some further insight into each of their relative perceptions of the other. I especially was intrigued by the covert angle and what it would mean for the over characters in the story. What I found was a seriously broken man, one whose soul was damaged in a way that was not to be mended, but who through the opportunity to love is given a sort of half chance at change. Alex is extremely good at what he does. His level of precision is what has allowed him to remain at the top of his class for so long, but it is the influence of Alina a new recruit that changes his world in ways that he does not expect. While I am truly impressed at the depth of each of these characters in some ways it is their flaws that while a bit endearing sort of left me wishing they could get to the point. Now please don't get me wrong its not drawn out in any way and the telling serves the flow and ebb of the story well, but the essential issue is that due to the flashbacks and subsequent flash forwards you find yourself lost in their story with little understanding of what direction it is going to go in. Which in turn makes you anxious to finish. I am still recommending this title! It is a qualtiy 3.5 star read with great characters and I thank you Monica for the opportunity to read your book. I just wish that you might have started the story at a different point in the telling, but then that might have been the appeal of it after all. You decide what did you guys think of "An Unwilling Assassin"?

I received an advance copy of this book from netgalley.com
This book tells the story of Alina Marinescu, a young woman recruited into an intelligence agency against her will. It tells the story of her training and early missions. The book is told in a series of flashbacks and flash forwards. I found the chronology difficult to follow and at times it took away from the story, as I found myself going back to check when certain events happened relative to the event that was being discussed. Overall, the story felt forced and contrived.
