An indentured starfarer, Rinn McCrea displeases her Chinese masters when the aliens of Delta Bootis attack her ship and she must seek refuge with the Soviets, who intend to use Rinn's telepathic powers to make peace with the aliens
Paula Downing King lived in Pinetop, Arizona, where she worked as a managing attorney of five Legal Aid offices and was also the Public Defender for the White Mountain Apache Tribe. She sold her first two novels, Mad Roy's Light and Rinn's Star, in 1989. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, cross-stitch and playing guitar.
Rinn's Star by Paula E. Downing is about a clash of cultures both human and alien. Rinn McCrea is a telepath who is despised by both the Chinese-controlled planets and the Russia-controlled planets who seem to be the dominant space-faring forces in this far future. The Russians proscribe telepaths completely and the Chinese reluctantly use them on their ships that contact alien species. When an alien contact goes horribly wrong for the Chinese and everyone but Rinn is killed she must depend on the help of a Russian ship's crew to save her. Many plot twists and turns will ensue in the telling of this story. It was an interesting read about the essence of human nature.
Who knew? The author lives down the block and is a new friend. She's a published author! Science Fiction!!! Right up my alley! I borrowed 3 of her books. Just finished this one. Loved it! And, I've already started another. Her knowlege of the heavens is amazing, as is her vocabulary. I'm thinking she might have a degree or two in science? I refered to my college dictionary quite often. It's been awhile since I've read something needing my companion dictionary. I love increasing my vocabulary, gestalt?(did they try to teach me that in education classes?) pyrrhic? enclave?(heard that one) imperturbable?(a characteristic I would like to have), etc. etc. Anyway, it's a fun read. Couldn't put it down. Adventure, romance, mystic, and intrigue in outer space.
