The real secret is to not follow this bad advice...
After reading books like this I feel like the author has got information from other authors who know nothing about reality in this area. I'm a senior recruiter who ha seen thousands of job seekers, applicants and candidates. Yes, they are all different. I've screened their qualifications, interviewed them, tested them and hired them. The cold truth is that most of them are woefully unprepared to compete. Referrals are generally hired more often than not, but they have to be proven referrals and not some hack who got his name known by an insider through networking on LinkedIn. That's the worse kind. My performance is evaluated on the qualify of candidate. You bet I'm going to have a high bar for applicants and referrals alike. Also, telling job seekers to call HR directly is exactly what HR doesn't have time for. That is the kiss of death. Don't make yourself out to be a crackpot by following advice in this book.
