Young halfer Juhg, the new master librarian, is still growing into his job as Grandmagister when an ally from the past returns. The wizened wizard Craugh bears warnings of an ancient threat that may resurface, the so-called "Kharrion's Wrath," which endangers the existence of the world.
Juhg must unlock the secrets contained in the journals of his absent mentor Wick, the former Grandmagister and legendary hero known as "the Rover." He must also continue the Rover's documented but clandestine search for a trilogy of books, which brings Juhg through many different realms of their very dangerous world…and into conflict and contact with other races (elves, dwarves, and men) whose fates are all intertwined among the pages of the great book of Time.
The first stop on this quest is the realm of dwarfs. Juhg and his companions must secure possession of the legendary battleaxe Boneslicer before it falls into the hands of their darkest of foes.
Mel Odom is a bestselling writer for hire for Wizards of the Coast's Forgotten Realms, Gold Eagle's Mack Bolan, and Pocket's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel book lines. His debut SF novel Lethal Interface made the Locus recommended list . The Rover was an Alyx Award winner. He has also written a scientific adventure of the high seas set in the 19th century entitled Hunters of the Dark Sea. He lives in Oklahoma.
The story was well written and flowed well. It features a non-human main character, who is searching for personal growth and the secrets locked away in journals from the past. He is a "halfer" and a magician, and this quest puts him on the trail of a mysterious device. I picked up book 2 of the Trilogy.
Mel Odom is another author I pick up and remark upon how much I like his work. As a librarian, I particularly enjoy those of his books that feature grandmaster librarians like this one does.
