Teen anst - especially teenage girl full-on miserable angst - is something I can't say I'm especially keen on in literature, and this novella is absolutely flush with the stuff. 'I hate my body, I hate my parents, I hate the world, I hate school' etc ... was no doubt annoying enough for a male of my age, but throw in the idea of premeditated murder without any remorse shown, and I can see why it says on the cover that the narrator here could be Camus' sinister little sister - there even being a reference to L'Étranger later on. That's about the only reason I read this. I can't say I was really convinced by any of it to be honest, and it was way too clichéd for my liking. It's written by a teen - Anne-Sophie Brasme was sixteen/seventeen at the time - about a teen, thus more appropriate for teens - the sulky dark bedroom dwellers more so. I did like the spare writing style, which had a bit of the Marguerite Duras about it, and much preferred the latter chilling stages than anything that went before, but the whole toxic friendship, obsession, control, love/hate thing, was just not explored with any real depth. But look, considering how young she was, I at least praise her efforts.

Este libro debería haberlo leído en febrero xD pero tuve un gran parón lector y estoy intentando recuperar el ritmo de lectura. He decidido leerme 2 libros por mes (de este reto obviamente), hasta estar al día.
Respecto al libro, la verdad es que no sabría decir si me ha gustado o no, sólo sé que lo he pasado un poco mal leyéndolo.
Me gusta mucho como está escrito y he empatizado mucho con la protagonista, por eso lo pasé un poco mal. La verdad es que nunca me ha pasado lo mismo que a Charlène, pero he llegado a entender su obsesión, las cosas que hace y su comportamiento.
No quiero decir que Sarah mereciera ese final, pero si es verdad que era una persona terrible, manipuladora, egoísta y mala.
Le doy 3 estrellas.

Charlènne Boher, una joven con una personalidad de tintes depresivos, con problemas en la relación con sus padres, antisocial y sin amigos, era una chica más atravesando esa etapa tan crucial de la vida como lo es la adolescencia. O al menos hubo un punto en el que pudo llegar a serlo, antes de que sus días dejen de tener sentido y se canse de ello. Sin embargo, en el momento justo en el que había decidido bajar sus brazos, Sarah apareció ante ella y lo cambió todo. Charlènne se creyó salvada y se entregó por completo a esta. Ese fue el inicio de una amistad que pronto se volvería íntima, extrema, tóxica y por último asfixiante. Ahora, desde la prisión, acusada de asesinato, es ella quien escribe su verdad.
Tengo muchas cosas para decir y un gran revuelo en mi cabeza.
En primer lugar, y a modo de advertencia, en caso de que no haya quedado claro, este libro es depresivo, fuerte, tan corto como intenso. Está escrito en primera persona, generalmente en pasado mientras la protagonista recuerda los hechos, pero por momentos adopta el presente, con lo que consigue otorgar más vida a sus palabras. La redacción es buena, no se genera confusión. Te atrapa y te arrastra a lo largo del relato.
La historia es muy interesante y está planteada a la perfección. Los aspectos psicológicos se corresponden y quedan expuestos con mucha nitidez. Me parece que la descripción de la relación de Charènne de pequeña con sus padres fue un gran acierto para reflejar esto también, y quienes sepan algo de psicología creo que encontrarán muchos elementos para analizar. Ese estado de depresión, si no se trata, puede desembocar en una adicción o trastorno, según la personalidad, y la obsesión podría ser una variante de esto.
El desenlace me pareció algo abrupto, aunque en consonancia con sí mismo, suficiente.
Este tipo de relatos tiene la cualidad de que conocemos su final de antemano, lo que podría quitar la emoción de la lectura. Aquí no ocurre eso; por lo contrario, las páginas se avanzan rápido, y a partir de la segunda mitad parece que ingresás en una vorágine que no podés regular, a igual ritmo que la protagonista, tal como ella tampoco podía controlarse. Tal vez en ese pequeño instante presente, somos Charlènne.
Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue que, como ya mencioné, las descripciones del trastorno y las consecuencias del mismo se encuentran hábilmente conectadas, y eso es difícil de lograr. No sólo es coherente, sino fehaciente y lo transmite de forma acertada. He notado que esto es posible cuando la trama se basa en algo vivenciado por el autor, o si de alguna manera estuvo en contacto con un hecho similar. No pude confirmar lo primero, debido a que hay poca información sobre Brasme en Internet, así que me atengo a lo segundo. En esa misma línea, estoy segura que ese vínculo entre los sentimientos que afloran en la adolescencia y la narración traspasan las páginas, porque son cercanos y verdaderos, teniendo en cuenta que este libro fue escrito a sus 16 años.
Las enfermedades mentales me resultan tan interesantes, incluso con un costado poético y metafórico, y es lindo cuando alguien escribe una historia que lo tenga en cuenta todo.
Respira es el testimonio de una joven con una personalidad enferma, con muy baja autoestima, que cree hallar la razón para seguir viviendo en la amistad de otra chica. No obstante, al poco tiempo la relación se tornaría en una obsesión desmesurada, inviable, en la que ambas alimentarían las perturbaciones mentales de la otra y la locura se arraigaría en ellas cada vez con más profundidad. Así, como el carácter fuerte se impone sobre el débil, cuya miseria y ceguera lo agobian, lo consumen, también se abastece ese amor-odio ambivalente, que tarde o temprano explotará y acabará con todo.
Un relato agobiante, potente y que llega al lector, porque nadie está exento de cruzar alguna vez esa línea que nos define como personas sanas.

We know at the beginning of the book that Charlene has killed her best friend. What we don't know is why. In the beginning we meet Charlene in her prison cell. She admits what she has done and she doesn't seem to be remorseful. From there she begins the story of her life: from a shy child to a haunted adolescent. Sarah, an American French girl, comes into Charlene's life in high school and from then on Charlene's life is doomed.
This was an interesting novel. Short, but really long enough. What interested me was that the novel claimed to be about obsession and how that can take over one's life. However, it seemed to me that Charlene wasn't really obsessed; she was taken over by Sarah and as much as she tried, could not escape the hold that Sarah had on her. Sarah is not really an innocent in this story as you think at the start. She is pretty evil and knows it. She treats Charlene rottenly and finds it amusing. It's interesting. That's really the best word I can find to describe this story.

This is one of those rare times that I think the movie is better than the book. I’ve seen the film adaptation of Breathe a couple times and it’s such an engrossing story of a destructive friendship between two teenage girls. I was excited to read the book because I thought I’d get even more depth with the characters than what was in the movie. But… unfortunately that didn’t happen.
The book seemed extremely melodramatic instead of just dramatic. I felt like I didn’t get much additional insight into the characters, they almost felt less developed in the book. Also, I wasn’t really a fan of the way that the book started with telling you what happened at the end. In some stories that can really add to the reading experience because you’re interested in seeing how it gets to that point. But in this case I think the ending would’ve had more of an impact if it was a shocking event rather than something you were expecting.
I do really love stories about obsessive and toxic friendships between young women. But that as the overall plot couldn’t save this book for me.

Pues... se trata de una novela corta que me ha sorprendido porque no esperaba nada de ella. Quizá mi sorpresa se deba a que mas allá de la trama, considero que está muy bien escrita.
**Alerta Spoiler!!
1.-La historia. Una chica encarcelada que nos cuenta su vida y como la obsesión la llevó al lugar en donde está.
2.-Los personajes. A groso modo, una loca y una persona mala y manipuladora. Siendo amable, una muchacha con trastornos obsesivos y necesidad de otra. Y una manipuladora que no tiene problemas en servirse de la debilidad y necesidad de su "amiga" para conseguir el control y todo lo que se propone.
Son dos personajes centrales difíciles y contradictorios. Y luego hay alguno secundario para dar un poco más de sentido.
3.-La pluma, la narrativa y demás. Esta muy bien escrito y me sorprende porque se supone que la autora tenía 16 años por aquel entonces. Que barbaridad!!
La trama no está mal, es bastante corta, y relata a la perfección lo peligrosas que pueden ser la necesidad y la obsesión. Muestra sin tapujos como hay gente que siempre estará ahí para aprovecharse de aquellos que son más débiles. Quizá haya escenas que no peguen mucho debido a la corta edad de los personaje y que sean un poco difíciles de creer, pero en sentido general, eso se puede pasar por alto.
4.-El final. Precipitado. Ya sabemos más o menos lo que va a ocurrir, pero llega muy rápido, sin extenderse demasiado en el detalle, porque al final ese "hecho" en concreto no es lo importante en la historia, sino el cómo se llega hasta él.
En fin, 3 estrellas sobre 5 porque sin ser nada del otro mundo, fue una agradable sorpresa.

No sé si alguien con esa psicopatología sería capaz de escribir semejante confesión, pero como ficción hay cosas que están bien contadas. Es la historia de una obsesión, de cómo una persona puede sentirse tan insignificante que se vuelve servil hasta el hastío, hasta que se rebela contra todo eso que la mantiene prisionera. La protagonista mata. Pero lo interesante (que incluso asusta por momentos) es la incapacidad que muestra para valorarse y ante semejante poco autoestima, vivir como garrapata de la sangre de otro, de otro que o bien se cansa, o bien se aprovecha de esa debilidad. El texto te lleva por momentos de incredulidad, incluso por momentos se torna un poco repetitivo, pero acaso ¿no es eso lo que pasa con las obsesiones? Se vuelve a caer siempre en lo mismo, cosa que para "los normales" es algo bastante difícil de creer.

Obsession is a theme that I'm fascinated with in literature. A lot of my favorite books deal with obsessive narrators, such as The Secret History (big surprise here) (says absolutely nobody) The Virgin Suicides or The Girls. I could even mention The Dumb House, The Collector or Lolita—although you can't really empathize with these narrators, they remain fascinating and you can't deny that obsession lies at the very core of their perversions.
All of that to say that one of my last reads definitely belongs to that genre: Respire (or Breathe in English) by Anne-Sophie Brasme. First of all, can I pat myself on the back for finally reading in French? Thank you, thank you. *tips hat* Secondly, let me tell you a few things about it. Respire tells the story of Charlène, a young woman who's been in prison for the last two years for murder. Like a lot of the books that I have mentioned in the beginning, Charlène tells us about her early life, her rather sad and dull chilhood and her difficult teenage years.
But the real story begins when she reminisces about meeting Sarah, the magnetic new girl at her school who then becomes her best friend. And so begins a friendship that will turn unhealthy, sour and well, obsessive. Obviously, we readers already know how it ends —murder— but the real mystery lies in how Charlène was pushed to it.
A more twisted and destructive Bonjour Tristesse—forgive me for the easy comparison, Brasme wrote her novel when she was only 17. If you like tales of obsession and how far it can push us to do terrible things, I'd highly recommend this book.

Respire se veut un roman de l'obsession, thème qui m'intéresse en littérature, mais qui n'a pas été abordé en profondeur dans ce roman. On apprend dès le départ qu'il y a eu meurtre, et il s'en suit un récit rétrospectif des évènements ayant conduit au crime. Le suspense est écarté.
Il ne me semble pas que Charlène ait été réellement obsédée par Sarah, mais plutôt que cette dernière avait sur elle une emprise dont elle ne saisissait pas l'ampleur, ni les effets. Les deux personnages sont assez détestables, la narratrice un peu moins : torturée, son air pathétique arrive quand même à toucher le lecteur.
En soi, l'histoire est intéressante et a du potentiel : l'obsession, l'adolescence, l'amitié et la toxicité des relations sont des thématiques qui auraient pu être traitées d'une façon plus approfondie. On comprend peut-être mieux pourquoi, quand on sait que l'autrice n'avait que 16-17 ans au moment de l'écriture. Elle manquait donc de recul, et Respire est un roman écrit par une adolescente pour les adolescent.es.

This book suffers from a poor translation, or super crappy writing, and an implausible, unbelievable story. It's no great mystery, from the beginning, as to who has been murdered, but the narrator's descent into madness is ridiculous, as was her strange obsession with her bitchy friend. I rolled my eyes continually. The only reason I kept on, was the print was large, and the book was a slight 117 pages. I also hoped it would get to the part where she goes to prison, as she is telling her tale from the cell block. It didn't, which was annoying. I wanted the trial! If she was so mentally ill, and only 16, why was she in a regular prison? The book was written by a 17 year old. You can tell.

No sé por qué me gusta tanto este libro.
La historia es muy cruda, fea y deprimente pero me agrada, es diferente. Me encanta la manera en que esta narrado con tantas descripciones sobre los aromas, el misterio está presente y aunque es corto la historia te engancha.
Es uno de mis libros preferidos, lo he leído muchas veces.

4 out of 5 stars! ⭐ Un roman d'une vérité hallucinante écrit par une jeune fille de 16 ans. J'ai beaucoup aimé la manière comment l'histoire a été racontée. C'est le premier livre d'Anne-Sophie Brasme que j'ai lu. Cette histoire de l'obsession et de la perte de l'identité m'ont vraiment fascinée et je le trouve hyper cool qu'une fille de 16 ans ait écrit une telle oeuvre.
Voilà donc ce dont le roman de jeunesse parle: Charlène est une enfant comme les autres, qui vit sans trop se poser de questions, prend ce qu'on lui donne et ne demande rien. Elle habite un immense appartement à Paris avec ses parents, pas très aimants ni très amoureux. Charlène souffre: elle est asthmatique, se sent incomprise, mal aimée. Avec l'entrée au collège commencent de longs mois difficiles, de solitude et d'attente. Jusqu'à l'arrivée de Sarah, brillante, magnétique. Une amitié naît, qui pour Charlène est un don inespéré de la vie, un émerveillement. Avant les petites déceptions, les souffrances, la passion puis le désespoir. 💔👌🏻✨

Pour ma part, c'était la première fois que je lisais un livre sur ces amitiés si particulières qui peuvent néanmoins toucher tout le monde. La plume d'Anne-Sophie Brasme aborde ce thème avec une justesse incomparable. Chaque moment de la vie de Charlène depuis sa plus tendre enfance, chaque pensée, chaque émotion est décrit parfaitement. Cela rend Respire d'autant plus passionant pour le lecteur. J'aimais aussi beaucoup que l'histoire commence in medias res, l'auteure a choisi de dévoiler la fin de son livre dès les premières pages et cela m'a vraiment poussée à vouloir lire le livre afin de savoir ce qui s'est passé dans la vie Charlie. 🖤🖤🖤
Je ne saurais définir l'obsession. Je crois qu'on la porte toujours en soi. Souvent, il suffit de presque rien pour la déclencher. Elle s'immisce en vous, silencieuse, attaque lentement, tortueuse, chaque partie de votre être ; mais elle est rusée et terriblement manipulatrice, car elle se fait passer pour votre amie mais ne manque pas pour autant de vous trahir. Voilà donc ce dont le roman de jeunesse parle: Charlène est une enfant comme les autres, qui vit sans trop se poser de questions, prend ce qu'on lui donne et ne demande rien. Elle habite un immense appartement à Paris avec ses parents, pas très aimants ni très amoureux. Charlène souffre: elle est asthmatique, se sent incomprise, mal aimée. Avec l'entrée au collège commencent de longs mois difficiles, de solitude et d'attente. Jusqu'à l'arrivée de Sarah, brillante, magnétique. Une amitié naît, qui pour Charlène est un don inespéré de la vie, un émerveillement. Avant les petites déceptions, les souffrances, la passion puis le désespoir. 💔👌🏻✨

La adolescencia es brutal, creo que no hay manera en que alguien pudiera contradecir eso. Son cambios drásticos que suceden sin compasión alguna, sin darnos tiempo a respirar, sencillamente cambiamos sin notarlo.
En esta etapa, encontramos personas que pueden dañarnos, siempre tenemos esa oportunidad de elegir mejorar y como hacerlo, pero hay veces en que resulta tan complicado que decidimos irnos por la salida más sencilla. Creo que son muchas ideas las qué me trae este libro, con la voz narradora de por medio tenemos la confesión de un asesinato, no obstante, sus motivos dan mucho de que pensar.
Sabemos que la única ley natural inquebrantable es la vida, pero en ocasiones, nuestro cerebro decide torcer esto y justificarnos. Hablamos de una posible justificación, algo que sin derecho leemos, rompiendo cada uno de los parámetros morales habidos y por haber. Porque sabemos que la asesina hizo lo que hizo, pero al final se termina con un nudo en el estómago pensando que quizá existen justificaciones para actos tan atroces, o quizá no, puede que solamente se trate del efecto que tiene esta gran novela.
Impacta, destroza y desmorona, es demasiada brutalidad dentro de la vulnerabilidad.

There are parts that are well done but others are just so repetive and badly written... several passages start something like this: "From then on, I..." and what follows is something the narrator introduced in the very same way just ten pages ago.
There is of course the spiral of obsession and (self) hatred that accounts for some of the repetitiveness, but overall... meh.

I think the idea behind this novel is really good- a young teen's obsession with another teen leads to murder and prison. I did think that the obsession part was handled well, but the ending was abrupt. It ends with the murder and the discovery of the body, but doesn't explain how she is caught and exactly what her sentence was. This is not a book that answers the questions that it raises with the reader, which isn't always a bad thing, but for me it kept me at a distance in this book. Overall this is a quick read about obsession, which teens in particular are prone to, and it's worth reading just for the subject if it's something that interests you.

Interesting short French novel about a young French girl’s (Charlene) obsession with an American French girl (Sarah) that is awful to her. There's no surprise in the book, but only an unraveling of the obsession. The writing is good and very interesting.
Something is missing- after all Charlene appears to have a mental illness that pre-dates Sarah. But maybe that’s the point? In law, you take the defendant as you found them. And Sarah knew in advance that Charlene was suffering from depression.

Respire est un roman coup de poing. Parce que la haine, l’amitié et l’amour sont parfois si forts qu’un rien les sépare. L’écriture de l’auteur est incroyable et cette descente aux enfers, ce mal-être et cette jalousie maladive que ressent Charlène plongent le lecteur dans un état second. Une magnifique découverte. A ne pas louper.

The title is a good reminder to the reader, especially when reading the last chapters. My god!
This is a fast paced story about obsession and control. I'd seen the movie adaptation by Mélanie Laurent a few years ago and re-watched it over and over again because this story speaks to me on a deep level. I've been in many toxic relationships in my teens and I think a lot of young girls end up in similar friendships, all encompassing, with little to no boundaries. The type of friendship that revolutionises your world and takes all your time, like first love but without the sex. It can get very intense, the highs are high the lows are very low, I've screamed and weeped and been pushed aside and totally ignored (and I'm sure I've been horrid sometimes too). There can be fierce, unspoken competition between young girls, we are pushed to hate each other by society, to try to take the upper hand any way we know how. I can totally see how it could take a darker turn. Most people thankfully just learn to let go of one another, aknowledge the friendship isn't making them happy and somehow move on, but I've dreamed about causing as much hurt to some people as they've caused me and I can imagine the relief of killing those people in writing.
The author perfectly encapsulate what it's like to be an insecure teenage french girl, dying to make herself a place in this world and to be loved any which way. To want control over yourself and the whole world too. To love so hard you start to hate.
Loved it with my entire soul. I haven't had much luck with my reads lately but I couldn't stop turning the pages with this one. Gorgeous!

...Trop aimer, aimer jusqu'à la haine, c'est sacrifier son honneur, aliéner sa propre liberté, c'est se faire mal, forcément...
Adapté au cinéma, il y a qq années... Respire est l'histoire d'une amitié toxique entre deux adolescentes, écrite à l'époque par l'auteur âgée de dix-sept ans, seulement. Rien que pour ça, je dis Bravo.
Alors, si j'ai trouvé ce petit roman intéressant dans l'ensemble, avec une écriture simple mais touchante, je reconnais surtout qu'il est assez troublant. Personnellement, je ne me suis pas sentie si proche que ça des personnages dont Charlène, l'héroïne, complètement paumée dans la vie, en mal d'amour de ses parents... et qui m'a énormément agacé par toutes ses faiblesses face à sa meilleure amie, Sarah : la manipulation et la perversion incarnées (même si je comprends tout à fait l'emprise sur autrui).
Dès le départ, on sait que Charlène est incarcérée pour meurtre et qu'à travers ce livre elle relate son histoire, sa difficulté à passé à autre chose, malgré une petite histoire d'amour qui aurait pu l'aider à s'en sortir... Mais cette nana est trop obnubilée par Sarah, même si elle est réellement consciente de son attitude et de son état. C'est complètement malsain, puisqu'on voit le truc venir à des kilomètres tout comme elle, et pourtant, elle y va tête baissée et nous, on reste spectateur de ce désastre. Y a de quoi faire grincer les dents !
Du coup, tout devient agaçant au fil des pages, et plus on avance, plus cette amitié à sens unique se révèle destructrice pour Charlène, et étouffante pour le lecteur (moi) jusqu'au point de non-retour, la mort.
C'est une histoire tourmentée qui fait réfléchir sur le comportement, l'âge ingrat, et le côté psychologique des ados que je recommande, bien évidemment. Ça vaut le coup de le lire au moins une fois dans sa vie.
