Dear Publishers,
If the book comes in a series, PLEASE PUT A NUMBER ON IT. Otherwise poor, unsuspecting bystanders like me look at it in the library, see nothing about this not being the first book in the series, and end up with book 6. This is a very confusing experience.
Also, this is a very confusing book.
No, that isn't fair. This is a CRAZY TRAIN RIDE of a book, but not a confusing one. The author actually does a pretty good job keeping the uninformed reader up to speed without bogging the plot with details. At least, I assume it doesn't bog the plot down. I don't know what the informed reader knows already.
Like, can someone explain to me why there are so many hot guys floating around? Not complaining but kind of confused.
There is so much going on in this story, I don't even know where to begin. Some of it appears to come about from earlier books (breakup, maybe? missing housekeeper? issue with a cake?) and some of it appears out of nowhere (good cop being put on administrative leave...murdered baker...evil boss?) There are so many plot points. And then the heroine goes on about "work life and "personal life" but the lines keep getting crossed so often I spent most of the book along for the ride, barely bothering to keep track of who went where and how it fitted together. Which was fine because it all kind of blurs by the end.
Here is the thing. I love and hate Hayley Randolph. She reminded me of a Sophie Kinsella heroine, except Sophie Kinsella's heroines are literally the most annoying people on the planet. But you know how you love them anyway? That's Hayley. I want to say she has intelligence but I'm not so sure on that point. What she does have is personal charm - oodles of it - and you can't help loving her.
I love her but she totally drove the Type A perfectionist in me CRAZY. I felt physically ill reading about her leaving her job every day to avoid work and take care of personal business. Like, woman. What. Are. You. Doing. Focus on the task at hand! Do your best!
And then she kept adding things to her to-do list, like finding a housekeeper and running this weird fashion show, and she'd forget stuff she already had promised to do...
But trust me. I hadn't forgotten and it caused me great stress. Because I am an overachiever. And reading about someone underachieving causes me pain.
I may have a problem.
Despite my anxiety over her schedule, I liked this book because a part of my brain knew it would all work together in the end. She'll figure it out. But things don't all get resolved, do they? Certain elements do, but then other things get brought up for the next book. And it works. More than works, I'm hooked. In fact, I'm currently having an internal battle about going back to the library Right. Now. because I want the next one in the series.
This book was all over the place and had the most irresponsible heroine and yet...I want more. So 4 stars. Not even listing all the faults can destroy my enthusiasm.

2.5 stars? Maybe just 2?

The murder mystery was interesting enough, but I did not like the narrator at all and found her annoying. And there was so much going on with the plot, it was too much to stuff into one book when it was this short. I wish it had focused on the murder more. The characters all kind of felt like caricatures of people as well which I didn't love

The previous books in this series were funnier. This one seemed a bit "off". Lots of loose ends, lots of uneven plot changes.
It was just okay, previously I had really enjoyed this series, but it was rather forced this time.
Hope there is another book in the series and author is able to bring back the humor and the realistic touches. This one was just too "out there" to be enjoyed.

This was a fun way to pass a week. It's likely one of those books you could knock out in a day, but it made for great fun when squeezed in among activities of a busy week as well. I've enjoyed this goofy series in between books with a little more substances. They remind me a bit of the Janet Evanovich's characters, but I looked up Dorothy Howell, and that supposedly is the author's real name, not a pen name.

Hilarious Haley Randolph once again was without a boyfriend and once again was starting a new job. She's excited about her first day at the huge event-planning company L.A. Affairs, and then she meets her new boss Vanessa who has run off more assistants than Haley's mother has run off housekeepers. Vanessa threw the folder containing Haley's first onto her desk and told her not to ask any questions. It was to finish planning a huge fundraising event auctioning off priceless Beatles memorabilia by a well-known L.A. name. Though Haley, who knew next to nothing about the Beatles, couldn't be bothered to thoroughly read everything in the folder, her predecessor had done a huge amount of the planning. So, she set out in the afternoon to check in on the cake decorating company contracted to build the giant yellow submarine cake for the party. That this was the same company that Haley's mother had had a huge fight with fairly recently was something she hoped they wouldn't remember. Instead, when she got there she found only one person in the bakery -- the owner, shot dead on the floor.

A Beatles Event

Haley Randolph, a purse connoisseur, and part-time amateur detective, starts a new job as an assistant event planner at an exclusive agency. The only problem is that her immediate boss, Vanessa, takes an instant dislike to her and gives Haley a job that Vanessa is sure that Haley will ruin – a fundraiser with a Beatles theme. Haley is determined to be successful and in her usual haphazard way gets things done. There is a slight hitch to the job, one of the vendors gets murdered and Haley discovers the body. Detective Madison, who has met Haley at other crime scenes, of course, suspects Haley since she had called in a complaint about the vendor. On the personal front, Ty Cameron has broken up with her, and her mother needs her to find a new housekeeper. Also, in a break-up coma, Haley agreed to run a fashion show at her part-time job at Holt’s Department Store despite her hatred of the fashions shown at the store. Haley makes an interesting hero because she seems so scatter-brained yet so on top of things. The plot is complex, but it all works out so well.

I’m not sure I can keep on...

...reading about Haley. She is coming off more and more like a lazy, egotistical spoiled brat. Her lack of work ethic is a bit off-putting, and once again, the lack of continuity makes it a hard story to follow. The poor editing is hard to overlook. One minute they are at one location and the next sentence they are back at another. How did they get there? Why? Can we have a new chapter, please? Or at the very least, a new paragraph?? I bought the series on a whim after reading the first one. I’m beginning to wonder if that was a mistake. I hope the next book is better or I may just delete the rest of them without even reading them.

A light beach read this mystery novel Is about an amateur detective named Haley Randolph .If you enjoyed Confessions of a Shopaholic this book is like that except with a mystery thrown in. If you like fashion you will love this book . I would have preferred a little more mystery and less clothes talk. The main character is also rather self absorbed with little concern for other people which makes her hard to like also you will hear a great deal about her ex boyfriend these things are brought up more than the main plot. It was still readable so I gave it three stars

I forgot to bring a book to the pool so I picked this up at a nearby Dollar General. The main character is rather vapid, there's no romance, and the mystery plot is rather uninteresting. I have no intention of pursuing other books in this series and struggle with whom to give this to. My son's girlfriend likes The Beatles but I don't feel good about sharing this book with anyone. Maybe I'll leave it on a park bench and let fate take over?

This is an interesting book in the Haley Randolph mysteries.
The later books briefly refer to events in the earlier books.
I had already read "Beach Bags And Burglaries", so I already knew the result of the contest and some of Haley's relationships.
I still enjoyed the details about these events and got wrapped up in the parts that were knew to me.

Surprisingly, I liked this book slightly more than all the other ones I've read so far in the series. The main character had a bit more depth, unlike her usual 'I don't care about anyone but me' schtick. So that was a bit refreshing to read about. On top of that, I enjoyed the mystery plot of this one too.

This entire series is a fun escape

I love spending time with Haley Randolph. She is hilarious and reminds me not to take life too seriously. Each book in this series is a fun escape from reality. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Haley is still self centered and lazy, but a tad less unlikable than in previous book. Still annoying with her fantasy visions though.

Synopsis (from amazon.com): Haley Randolph, newly-single fashionista extraordinaire and occasional part-time sleuth, has definitely landed her ticket to ride this time: a job planning events for big-deal Hollywood clients. Everyone likes a party, right? So what could possibly go wrong?

As it turns out, quite a lot. Haley’s nasty new boss sets her up for disaster by putting her in charge of a hugely complicated Beatles-themed charity bash. Before Haley can say, “Oh! Darling,” she’s on her way to look at the party’s custom yellow submarine cake. . .only to find the baker, Lacy Hobbs, lying in a pool of blood here, there and everywhere!

Of course Detective Madison–Haley’s occasional nemesis (though he does have a hunky partner!)–is eyeing her as the murderer, so she’ll now be working at least eight days a week to get to the bottom of the mystery. Of course the suspect list leads down a very long and winding road as Lacy had quite a few Tinseltown enemies, including a very unhappy bride–and a rival baker.

It’ll take more than a hard day’s night for Haley to both hold onto her job and keep herself out of those awful blue prison outfits while tracking down the season’s hottest bag: the Enchantress. And though Haley’s not one to run for her life, the killer may be much closer than she thinks!

My thoughts: Well here we are with the next adventures of Haley Randolph! How does one describe Haley: college student (sort of), employee at Holt’s department store (kind of, when she wants to but hates every moment of it), fashionista, handbag lover, ex-girlfriend of the always handsome and charming Ty, daughter of a high-maintenance ex-beauty queen, and now event planner at the high class L. A. Affairs. This right here should tell the reader they are in for a ride when it comes to Haley books.

Haley is one of those characters that I absolutely love to hate . . . kind of the like the main character in Sophie Kinsella’s shopaholic series. Part of me always gets really annoyed with her . . . her lack of motivation, her ability to somehow never hold down a job and yet afford exquisite fashion and to die for handbags (I’m think I’m just jealous :), her attitude of blowing everything off. Yet the other part of me of course thinks she is absolutely hilarious!

I will admit that this book in particular had some hilarious, laugh out loud moments and some great snarky lines that I wanted to write down! A great cast of characters and a decent mystery that will keep you reading!

A great, fun cozy series that always leaves me coming back for more. The end of this particular book of course makes me wonder what is up next. And I don’t have to wait to long as the next Haley Randolph book Beach Bags & Burglaries comes out in July 2014! Can’t wait!

And remember,

“Purses, Parties and Perpetrators”

Haley Randolph has had her share of ups and downs—first, losing her job as a corporate event planner, then breaking up with her “Totally hot” boyfriend, Ty Cameron. It seemed the only constants in her life were her love of purses and chocolate, her BFF Marcie Hanover and her part-time sales clerk job at Holt’s Dept. Store. With her 25th birthday fast approaching, she decides (while in “Break-up Zombie-land”) to enroll in some online courses, volunteers to be the Fashion Show Coordinator for Holt’s, (Much to her fashion-savvy dismay), find her ex-Beauty Queen Mother a new housekeeper and, last, but not least takes Marcie’s advice to go for an interview at “LA Affairs”, a very prestigious event planning company, catering to the rich and famous. She is also in search of the hot, bejeweled purse of the season, “The Enchantress”. Haley gets hired quickly—maybe, too quickly? She discovers she’s filling a position that is vacant due to the death of the former Assistant, Jewel, (Could this be an omen of things to come?) and her Supervisor, Vanessa Lord instantly hates her—with the feelings quickly becoming mutual. Haley’s only in the position for a day when nasty Vanessa plunks down a huge file for a party at the home of Hollywood Hotshots, Sheridan and Talbot Adams—and, not just any old party—a Beatles’ themed party—complete with 2 irritating experts named “Eleanor and Rigby”! She knows her future with the Company depends on the success of this event, You would think, all of this chaos would keep her mind off her ex-boyfriend Ty—Wrong! Thoughts of him keep creeping back, making her heart hurt. Haley goes through Jewel’s notes and finds that Sheridan Adams has requested a special cake from none-other than the “Bakery to the Stars”—“ Lacy Cakes”. She goes to the establishment to finalize details, only to find someone has been there before her—the murderer! Even though Haley’s the one who made the discovery, cranky curmudgeon/Detective Madison fingers her as a suspect. Haley quickly dons her sleuthing cap to clear her name and solve other crimes as well. I enjoyed getting re-acquainted with Haley, Marcie, the “Queen Mother”, Detectives Madison and Shuman, hunky PI Jack Bishop, ex-boyfriend Ty Cameron, and even scary but savvy, Mike Ivan makes an appearance. There are quite a few new personalities who we are bound to run into in the future. All in all, it’s an easy, enjoyable cozy--the only thing I didn’t care for is the repetition of some facts—it gets rather old and annoying. However, I’m looking forward to Haley’s next adventure so we get some answers to the story’s dangling questions. Nancy Narma

This is another Haley Randolph mystery. This time she has a job as an events planner at a firm called LA Affairs. The company is desperate to hire an assistant to a very hard to work with events planner. Assistants do not last long at this worksite. Haley is tough and she is not given up her job very easily. Her first assignment is to be the coordinator for a director's wife charity event. Its a Beatles theme so they had ordered a yellow submarine cake at Lacy Hobbs bakery. Unfortunately Lacy is found murdered.

So along with that trauma, Haley and boyfriend Ty have broken up. In a zombie daze, Haley has somehow agreed to be the fashion show coordinator for the Holt's Department store she works at part time. The store is involved in a fashion show contest to see which store can account for the most sales on a particular day.

Lots of crazy things are happening at once including her mother losing her longtime housekeeper, men coming out of the woodwork trying to kiss her and Haley trying to solve the murder of the baker. It was an average read. Nothing really to get excited about.

There's just something about a heroine who is shallow and funny all at the same time, and makes no attempt to hide it! Add in a couple of hunky men who pop up regularly in this series and some great characters who appear as the heroine's friends, along with a fine murder mystery, a lot of humor, and some tongue-in-cheek dialogue, and you have a winner!

DNFed. At Chapter 15 or 16. Pluse I miss countedhow long I had the Book on Hoopla and used up my borrows for the month. This cozy mystery is not for me at all and I love cozy mysterys. I found myself skimming the book & counted at least 20+ "it's a long story" MC is insufferable, no work ethic, and lame. The bad version of Legally Blond with -F in mystery.

It's too fluffy, it's too hard to believe, Haley is way too irresponsible, and it's too much throwing back to previous books - "long story". But still, I often enjoy a light-hearted book I can zip through.
