In my recent review of Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man I briefly discussed one of the most dominant complexes of ideas in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Another and closely related complex is primitivism, of which probably the best known proponent was Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Briefly said, a basic position taken in this complex of ideas is that the set of gifts endowed upon all human beings by Nature/the Creator - gifts which suffice for all the matters of life that are actually important - are inevitably clouded and corrupted in advanced societies. The purest, most unadulterated set of gifts - and therefore the clearest and most correct view of life - is to be found among the members of the simplest - not to say primitive - societies. The text under discussion here is an appealing apologia for that complex of ideas in the form of a fiction/fable set in India.

Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a dreamer, botanist and writer best known now for a novel, Paul et Virginie, which might be unusual enough for me to read at some point. But I'm going to say a few words about another unusual text from his hand, La Chaumière indienne (The Indian Cottage, 1790), a satire on learned, advanced societies, on organized religion, on theory and science in which Bernardin de Saint-Pierre takes the position of what one could call a sentimental Rousseauist. La Chaumière indienne was reportedly a very popular book in its time, hence represented a point of view with a lot of appeal shortly before the worst of the French Revolution.(*)

In this amusing and spirited frame narrative, 20 British scholars are sent out into the world to find from the most learned beings and through direct experience the answers to no less than 3,500 open questions each (as well as to acquire ancient manuscripts). One of these scholars - the one sent to India - is ecstatic; he has 90 cases of books and manuscripts(**) and answers to all his questions. Then he realizes that he has 5 different answers to each question, and this dampens his pleasure a bit. Desperately wishing to resolve these questions uniquely, he asks along the banks of the Ganges after THE MOST IMPORTANT SAVANT. At last successful in this, he makes his pilgrimage to said savant and has a most bitter (for him, but entertaining for us) experience.

Disillusioned, the scholar takes steps to return to Europe, but a dramatic storm leads him to a simple cottage of rather remarkable construction that, it turns out, is inhabited by a member of the lowest caste in India - an Untouchable. His reception by the pariah is in all ways the opposite of that accorded him by the savant. And, because he is simple and close to Nature, undamaged by the errors and delusions of "advanced" society, the pariah also has the answers to the most important questions the scholar could pose. The scholar is fulfilled and transformed.

The embedded tale is the story of the pariah's life, and because at one point the pariah had ventured out into the margins of society, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre has further opportunity to criticize society tellingly. His solution - live close to Nature and have a wife (and a dog !) - may sound simplistic, but the satire is not.

Nearly sixty years apart, Alexander Pope's "Instinct" becomes Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's "simple heart"; both mistrust reasoning and both are very Christian. But the winds of Romanticism have begun to blow, and neo-Classicism, already passé in gardening/landscaping and architecture, is being challenged in painting and literature. In philosophy the dominance of Natural Law and the distrust of systems and theory are receding to give way to some of the most ambitious philosophical systems known to Mankind. And a revolution in historiography draws itself together for a leap into the future.

It's of interest to note that beginning in 1768 Bernardin de Saint-Pierre spent three years on the islands of Mauritius and La Réunion where, instead of finding wild island paradises, he spent his time trying to get the governor to put the brakes on the intense deforestation and agricultural development that was going on. In 1773 he published a two volume report on that trip, Voyage à l’Île de France, à l’île Bourbon et au cap de Bonne-Espérance, par un officier du roi. An environmentalist before the word was invented, a dreamer and adventurer, finally Intendant of the Jardin des Plantes de Paris (where the statue imaged above stands), Bernardin de Saint-Pierre is an appealing figure and his unusual and fresh fable is well worth reading.(***)

() All men sense/feel/perceive in the same way, and they reason differently, because the principles of Truth are in Nature, and men draw the consequences in their own interest.

(*) This longing for simpler lives in pre-Industrial Revolution Europe is striking. But I wonder how much of it was sincere and how much was comparable to the New Age fashion, which already seems to be receding. On the other hand, the social and political tensions in France were reaching the breaking point, so one could well understand a desire for tranquil simplicity.

(**) weighing 9,540 pounds... Details and numbers of all kinds (e.g. of the 3,500 questions in the scholar's charge, 378 concern the origins and flooding of the Ganges), specification of the duties of dozens of servants and porters, etc. - the author's tongue is pressed firmly against cheek and there is a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

(***) It is available online in multiple editions at Gallica and has been translated into English under the title The Indian Cottage.
