This is a very touching and moving love story between two most unlikely subjects. Loki, a product of a scientific experiment, a splice of animal DNA with human, and Captain Sawyer, a strict military man, whose job it is to keep Loki in check. The splicing has left Loki with shifter tendencies--- a cougar’s. As a result, he was held in captivity and treated to all sorts of mental and physical abuse. On the verge of death after a severe beating, he was released into the keeping of the strict Captain. Captain Sawyer felt sorry for Loki and showed him the first kindness he had ever known, and of course, poor Loki falls in love with the Captain. When Loki realizes his feelings for the Captain was returned, he was beside himself, although a bit skittish at first. But under the gentle coaxing of the Captain’s more experienced hands, Loki came to realize true love and fulfillment. The author did an excellent job of drawing the reader into the story with great pacing and flow that kept me rapidly turning the pages.
