“There are rules that must be followed, Maggie.” “Even in witchcraft?” “Especially in witchcraft. What someone puts into the world comes back to them.” “You mean karma?” “Like karma, yes. But for a witch it comes back threefold. Never forget that.” “That doesn’t seem fair.” “Who said life was fair?”
In the second installment of The Daughters of Dark Root series, Maggie Maddock and her sisters are back, training under their coven-leading mother Miss Sasha Shantay to take over as the new leaders of The Council. But life isn’t as smooth as Maggie had hoped it would be. Harvest Home’s taxes have come due, and her mother’s illness has returned, stronger than ever.
Desperate, Maggie and Eve devise a scheme to make money through witchcraft.
And that’s when things go terribly wrong.
The Magick of Dark Root is a paranormal Fantasy with true-to-life characters who just happen to have magical abilities. However, this is not just a story of witches, it is a story about life, relationships, sacrifice, and the healing power of love and family.
April Aasheim is the second oldest of six children. She spent her early years traveling the western part of the country with her mother and step-father. During this time she met a lot of interesting people and developed a love of 'characters'.
April is married and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and her cat Boots.
I am so in love with this story. I'm excited for the next installment. April Aasheim has an amazing gift for writing and story telling that make me want to read everything she's written. I'm definitely a fan
This book kept reminding me of that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman movie Practical Magic. This is book two in a series, or maybe trilogy, I'm not sure. When I read a series book from an author I have never read before I actually like to read the first out of order. So this was perfect for me!
There are a few grammatical errors that kind of had me rereading a few paragraphs because I thought I missed something. Some I'm sure are just scriveners errors like using her instead of he, but it was still a bit irritating. The first 1/3 of the book is very slow moving and it referred back to a great deal of things that I suppose were probably in the first book. For me it was just tedious and drawn out. A character was thrown out of nowhere, "I am calling Jillian." Uh.... okay. Who the hell is Jillian? She is explained later but at that point it was such a volatile moment in the book that it was like a knife to a tire. Fell flat.
Once the book picked up the story line was great and the last 3/4 of the book was really good. At that point I sat down and read the whole thing in one night. We follow Maggie through a journey to find herself and a secret object. I had a feeling that there was a lot more character development in the first book that we are suppose to just know, but you still get a good feeling for who each character is.
I would probably have given it a 5 star if I had read the first book, but this one does a fair job of standing on it's own.
I can't put into words how much I fell in love with this book and its characters. Maggie finally finds herself and a family member once lost comes home. The family finds themselves in a sticky situation; old enemies rear their ugly heads, but you have to read the book to find out what truly conquers all! It's amazing!
i absolutely loved all the books in this series. i read each book in sequence back to back. couldnt seem to stop reading them and when i had to take a break the story was always playing in my mind. i can not wait until another is published. i enjoy reading this author.
Maggie Maddock and all three of her sisters escaped their home town of Dark Root, Oregon years ago, but now they're all back, and they're on their way to bringing the town back to its former glory, too--as a tourist haven for all things "witchy," and a lot more, it turns out.
Book One ended on an up note, but the sisters manage to get into all kinds of new trouble in Book Two--boyfriend trouble, paranormal trouble, money trouble, sister trouble, mother trouble... Along the way we learn more about the history of Dark Root, and Sasha Shantay's mysterious past, too.
The sexual tension between Maggie and Shane is delicious, although I do want to smack them sometimes for being so dense.
April Aashiem weaves a good yarn that kept me spellbound. My only real complaints were the odd dialect that Aunt Dora's dialogue is written in, and some grammatical errors that are a personal pet peeve of mine (using "I" when the proper word would be "me," as in "They went with Eve and I," which should actually be "They went with Eve and me.") A quick pass by a professional copy editor would solve that problem in a snap.
I read the first book of this series and really enjoyed it, not being able to wait to read this second book! I love all of the characters in this book. They are so well-developed that I feel like I know them personally! It took me even less time to read this than the first one! I am hooked & can't wait read the next book!
I had rated the first book 4 stars because of grammatical errors. I was pleased to only see a few errors in this book, much less than the first!
I can't fall in love with this book, its too complicated and annoying.
I just don't love it. I find Maggie extremely hard to like and get, shes so stupid. Not intelligence stupid but common sense stupid, how do you not know if you deliberately do good karma you won't get good to come to you. Its sort of the basic law of the universe.
I'm not going to continue on this series I struggled through book 2
The story continues in this 2nd novel, where the first one left off. I loved it. It made me laugh and cry. Little bit more of adult content and situations in this novel, but Dang it was good. I highly recommend it. There are a few grammar mistakes in this one, but my mind easily corrected it as I read. It's not as bad as I had read in 1 lady's review. Get this book, a box of tissues by your side and enjoy :)
When I read the first book I don’t think I was that impressed with the story. I liked the aspects, witches and such, just not the story. I went back and re-read the first book and immediately went to book two. Maggie’s developing magic, along with her sisters is really starting to move things along. Also, interesting developments with Shane. Can’t wait for #3.
This dragged for me in the middle and I wasn't sure I was going to finish this one, much less the series. It just stalled out and I felt like it was too much like Practical Magic. But it pulled it together finally and ended well. I like how she lets every story have an ending so it can stand alone, much better than those series that force you to keep reading.
So I did this weird thing where I accidentally read book two first. I have to say, I was not lost at all! April did a wonderful job writing this book, it has a great setting, awesome characters, and a superb plot. If you enjoy books with realistic story lines that include a bit of magick then this series is one for you!
This book is the continuing story of the witches of Dark Root. I liked this book, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. Maggie became extremely annoying. She is supposed to be this all powerful witch, but she is acting like a middle school student. In addition, the introduction of Shane's past story line is just ridiculously stupid.
I really enjoy this series. It is written to be believable not that magic is the answer to all. The characters are flawed and have issues to deal with. The world they live in is believable and everyday problems that you can relate to. The book has a good pace and keeps your interest until the end and wanting the next in the series. I am a fan.
I love this book series because I think April has a great writing style that totally soothes the story, and I really enjoy everything I learn about witchcraft throughout the novels.
In this book I'm still not completely fond of Maggie, but I see that in this book she has changed a bit and is going on a good track. I think the book had a good flow of events and I can't wait to read the next one!
The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2)
The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2) am loving 💓💕💞💖💝💞💜💙💚💛 this series! I am glad to have found it. The story is mesmerizing every page takes you on an imaginative journey. I can't wait to read book 3.. definitely recommend reading 📖 this book / series 📚
A really good read and gets you all in the feels. I think the author did a good job on this story and we got to learn more background on dark root and Miss Sasha.
Proofreading could have been better
It was a happy ending no cliffhanger, so definitely wondering what the next story will be about.
Well, it was ok. It's a bit frustrating that Maggie isn't communicating well with Shane when they're supposed to be the love interest. The whole secrets theme is a bit meh, but I suppose it's because I'm not really one for holding things in! I'll be carrying on the series but I wasn't blown away by this one.
This was a pretty decent read. I like the characters and while the story lines are not especially exciting, they did keep me engaged. Everything had a nice steady pace to it so it was never boring or dull. I'd read the next one.
I have really enjoyed this series to this point. Good story development. Characters are enraging, endearing, lovable and we'll rounded people. Great paranormal series.
I think the story has gotten better as I read! The characters have a depth to them that I love. The family element is so strong. I look forward to the next book and delving deeper into this family of witches!
I love fantasy books especially books about witches. This is the second book and it keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out what is going to happen next. Definitely a must read for the fantasy and witch loving readers out there!
This book could serve as an end to the series, no cliffhangers here. I, for one, am very glad that it doesn’t. I feel like Maggie has come into her own in this book, and I am excited to see what she does next.
It's an interesting series so far with a few twists I didn't see coming. The writing is pretty good but there are a lot of grammatical errors in the Kindle version. There is a third book in the series which I will read.
I just love Dark Root and all its Magick it holds. Makes me want to start my own little town like that. I’m so caught up in this family, I even shed a few tears at the end, I’m not talking about the books end either. Can’t wait for the next book to read!!
I loved this book so much because it shows the characters growing and learning and maturing. Most importantly it shows them leaning to live as a family again.
Very exciting parts to this story! Read it all in just 3 sitting!
Here I thought I was reading about the early 70s until we progress rAther quickly into a very old powerfully magical town that you or if driven right past well told characters that come alive excellent
I am loving this series! It's not my normal read and I am glad to have found it. The story is mesmerizing every page takes you on an imaginative journey. I can't wait to read more.
Not as good as the first book, but still good. The Leo subplot was annoying, boring and cliche (Twin Peaks mixed with Practical Magic). But the characters are otherwise just as likeable and interesting. I'll give the next one a go, but I'm thinking they are losing steam already.
