Ok, scenario remains all over the place, not so much piraty rather than cloak-and-daggery on a pirate setting. I don't care much though, i'm here for the drawings that remain out of this world.

Une bonne coche sous le premier tome. Dans ce dernier, il y a beaucoup moins d'action, la piraterie est légèrement moins présente et la romance de plus en plus. Je décroche lentement, mais sûrement! C'est malheureux, car j'avais bien apprécié le début et le tout me semblait prometteur. Peut-être était-ce seulement ce tome qui était plus faible et que tout rentrera dans l'ordre dans le prochain, j'espère, sinon cela pourrait fort possiblement être le dernier.
Petites notes, plusieurs personnages ne sont pas sans rappeler ceux de la série télé Black Flag, je ne c'est pas qui fut créé en premier lieu, mais il y a quand même une ressemblance assez évidente pour au moins trois personnages.

Bello persino più del primo. Poetico e sanguigno allo stesso tempo. Disegni bellissimi, con inquadrature anche sorprendenti ed inusuali. E personaggi davvero notevoli. Una trama sui generis nello straordinario mondo dei pirati.

Dufaux continues to weave several tales of piratical wrath, lust and greed.
The castaway captain has returned to Spain to relate his tale to the king, who in turn offers the captain a chance to avenge the death of the noblewoman, giving him a pair of warships, and also instructing him to secure the diamond. Putting him on a collision course with Black Dog.
Emilio has engaged in a creepy gay romance with the weird nobleman, Flynn. When Flynn is murdered by the scar-faced Morkham after a duel, Emilio vows revenge.
There is a long and effective flashback involving Flynn and Morkham. The aim here is to establish a tragic past for Flynn and a deep hatred for the vile and conniving Morkham, who ingeniously framed Flynn for the murder of his own sister. It also explains why Flynn was smitten by the boy — he looks exactly like Flynn’s dead sister.
Maria has grown rich and has utterly dominated and humiliated the slave trader, who follows her like a puppy. She still plans to destroy him.
Raffy has spiraled downward after his abandonment and attempts suicide. But he is rescued by Maria. Initially, he attempts to kill her in retaliation for the shot which kept him from the Barracuda, but she charms him and the two begin a secret romance. What her true intentions are, who knows, probably not good.
A whore scorned by Raffy vows vengeance.
The Barracuda is somewhere at sea.

The art is still gorgeous and the story and writing are a tad better, so this gets three stars instead of the two for volume 1. I did pick this up mostly for the gorgeous art, and from an enduring fascination with pirates. It has some similarities to Black Sails, which I really like, and some twists, like the cross-dressing cabin boy that could cross over to delightfully weird. The former slave girl who has completely ensnared and emasculated her husband is an interesting character concept. i don't think its done quite well enough to be believable, but I get the idea.

He answers huge biggest double question that made the first outlandish. He answers without ceremony either- you had to remember what you wondered to get it. Solid. It's a Dufaux bro- it's juicy dramatic and it's even funny at times.
The return of Morghan (cover) to face his final duel with the enigmatic Flynn comes at a bad time for his transromance at the same time as another romance buds between two enemies. There's plenty of action and intrigue as well!

La historia avanza un poco más lento de lo que me gustaría, aunque sigue siendo un comic interesante. Esto segundo tomo abandona una de las principales líneas abiertas en el primero, la que da nombre a la serie, y se centra en el personaje de la portada. Es casi una historia auto-contenida. Veamos hacia dónde se mueve la trama a partir de aquí.

The story itself is interesting, the world building good, and the characters made me curious to know more, but the star of all is the art. I was going to give 3 stars, but I added one more star for the gorgeous art.. the drawings are extremely good.

The story is slowly building up.
And I have to say it again: This is a bit like the “Black Sails” -tv-series. Except at the moment this comic series has even less piracy going on...

May 21, 2015J'ai commencé ce deuxième tome, en lisant le résumé du premier, proposé comme un rappel à l'histoire. Là, une question à enfin trouver sa réponse. Souvenez-vous, je ne savais toujours pas après ma lecture qui était Emilio/Emilia. Et là, c'est chose faite : il est en réalité le serviteur de Dona et Maria. Je me demande pourquoi Dona, et surtout sa fille, on décider dans le tome précédent d'aider leur serviteur en lui faisant revêtir une robe, pour le faire passer au yeux de tous pour une femme, surtout que l'ont voit bien que Maria n'est pas très attachée à lui... Sûrement pour les besoins de l'histoire...
Bref, nous voilà trois ans après l'enlèvement et la vente de Dona, sa fille, et son serviteur à différents pirates de l'île Blanco Puerta. Les choses ont évoluées : Dona et morte de chagrin en ayant été séparée de sa fille, cette dernière s'est mariée avec son acheteur, Ferrango, uniquement pour profiter de sa fortune, et Emilio/Emilia devient l'amant de son acheteur, Mister Flynnt.
Tandis que Maria trompe son mari avec le fils de Blackdog, Flynnt voit son passé le rattraper, sous le personnage de Morkam, l'ancien amant de sa sœur, Virginia. Morkam le provoque en duel, et malgré l'entraînement de Flynnt, il ne parviendra pas à survivre, tout cela sous les yeux de son amant, Emilio...
L'histoire est moins plate que dans le premier tome, avec toujours ces beaux graphismes, mais je n'ai pas plus aimé que ça. On devine très facilement que Emilio va vouloir se venger, et donc sous l'apparence d'une femme ou d'un homme il se fera justice, ou que Maria va se venger de son mari, tout en se servant de Ryff, le fils de Blackdog. D'ailleurs, ce dernier... Nous ne savons pas ce qu'il devient. Il est mort ? Il a trouver son diamant maudit ? Et l'expédition des espagnols pour retrouver Dona et sa fille, sont-ils en route ? Bref, tout autant de questions dont il aurait été utile de renseigner le lecteur. Avec ses 52 pages, les auteurs de BD ne peuvent se permettre d'abandonner leurs lecteurs ainsi, surtout quand il y à un an de décalage entre chaque parutions des tomes. Vu qu'il y à cinq tomes de prévus, trois sont déjà publiés... Cinq ans pour juste une moyenne de 150 pages dont l'histoire n'avance pas, et dont on devine très facilement la suite, c'est moyen. Je ne pense pas que je lirais la suite de cette saga.

It’s three years later and the youngsters left behind at Puerto Blanco have matured and adapted in different ways to the enforced changes of direction in their lives. Maria has married the abusive and wealthy slave trader who once terrorised her and now dominates him, exploiting his desperate need to be loved by her. Emilio is still passing himself off as female thanks to his feminine looks and physique, protected somewhat by the attentions of Flynn, while Raffy is bitter and temperamental at being left behind while his father seeks the Kashar diamond.
Maria has become a distant, controlling figure, taking advantage of her husband’s wealth as she builds a power base on the island. It was because of Maria’s actions that Raffy was forced to stay on the island, and when they meet again it is a dangerous moment that transforms anger into passion. Raffy was at the end of his tether, so the unexpected solace he finds in Maria’s arms goes quite some way to rectify his descent. Meanwhile, Emilio has grown ever closer to Flynn and the two of them begin an affair only for it to be interrupted by the arrival of Morkam, a heavily scarred black-clad pirate with a thirst to avenge himself in a duel. It’s not the first time he and Flynn have battled, but it has been some time, so Flynn seeks out assistance with his swordplay with an island recluse.
To be clear, an awful lot happens between the front and back cover here, with histories being filled in, new characters introduced, threats, missions, vengeance, not to mention a recital. The promise of the first book is rather overshadowed by the incredible amount going on in this one, and I can’t help but feel that it could have benefitted by giving the characters much more space to breathe and develop. As it is, the older versions of the three main characters come across as unsympathetic, which may well be the intention in preparation for the next act.
It doesn’t make for a bad book, but it does take the shine off what came before, so here’s hoping that some form of redemption warms the pages to come. So if you enjoyed volume one you should certainly still give this one a try, but bear in mind there’s another book to follow.

Je retrouve les personnages après quelques mois sans y avoir touché et le moins que l'on puisse dire c'est que le temps a passé pour eux aussi ! Chacun a mené sa barque avec plus ou moins de réussite (mention spéciale pour Maria qui est devenue plus garce que la pire des garces). Emilio quand à lui assume complétement sa fausse identité sexuelle ( en même temps ça fait une jolie fille, du coup ça m'a fait un peu pensé à Lady Oscar ...). Sa relation avec Flynn est bien menée et j'ai adoré les petits flashbacks qui permettent de mieux comprendre l'histoire. Grâce à eux, on sait pourquoi l'affreux Morkam en veut autant à Flynn (qui pour le coup n'est pas tout blanc tout blanc à la base : j'aime bien).
En ce qui concerne Raffy, le pauvre garçon et son bandana rouge sont en pleine perdition... Jusqu'à ce qu'il revoit Maria.et là... c'était couru d'avance...
Le passage sur le roi d'Espagne et la présentation du diamant, permet de mieux comprendre pourquoi Blackdog n'est pas encore revenu et ajoute du mystère à l'histoire !
Et je termine avec une mention très spéciale sur le fait que ce soit une gouverneure !
Pour le reste, les dessins, remplis de détails (le visage de Morkam ou du Frere espagnol sont des chefs d'oeuvre) sont parfaits. Et j'aime toujours autant la colorisation : sur le fond je trouve qu'ils utilisent peu de couleurs mais le rendu est vraiment beau ( mention spéciale une fois encore pour l'utilisation du rouge).
Ce que j'aime : que les jeunes aient grandis, que la bande dessinée soit clairement pour adultes (si j'en crois la nudité et les intrigues), les couleurs, l'ambivalence d'Emilio, la relation Raffy/Maria, le fait que le gouverneur soit une femme et toute la mythologie qui entoure le diamant
Ce que j'aime moins : la fin m'a dépitée, je ne m'attendais pas à cette issue pour Flynn, j’espérais encore découvrir de nouveaux secrets à son sujet
En bref : Un second tome où les enfants ont grandis pour mon plus grand plaisir, l'intrigue gagne en mystère et s'étoffe quand aux dessins et à la colorisation, ils sont toujours au top

Continuing the interconnected stories of Emilio, Maria, and Raffy from
Barracuda 1: Slaves
, this second album leaves the titular ship out of the narrative and shows the now growing youths and the separate lives they now have on the pirate island of Puerto Blanco. At the same time, parts of the wider cast of characters are expanded upon; for instance, we are presented with some back story of Emilio's benefactor, Mr Flynn, and this also introduces a new character: the abominably scarred Morkam.
All in all, this second volume keeps my interest and I am looking forward to seeing where the narrative goes from here.

La quête du trésor dont traitait le premier tome est reléguée à une quête secondaire dans celui-ci, de même que plusieurs personnages importants. C’est la vie à l’extérieur des bateaux et des folles aventures qui est montrée, ce qui donne peu moins d’action, mais qui approfondit la psychologie et le passé des personnages.
