The Affair Week Eight

Upon her return to the Breakers, Emma makes a bracing decision--her affair with Montand will end, but only to make way for a deeper relationship with the man she loves. But Montand's aunt Vera has plans, too. Vindictive, obsessive, and unsettlingly territorial, Vera insists that Emma leave the Breakers and never look back. And she has the weapon to make it happen: a final secret about Montand that even he doesn't know, one with such devastating implications that it would surely destroy him and ruin any chance of happiness he might have hoped for with Emma.

Loathe to plunge Montand into despair, Emma decides to heed Vera's warning. But as Emma first learned when she arrived at the Breakers eight weeks ago, Montand's family promised many surprises. And there is one more to come that could change everything.

The Affair is the latest serial e-book by author Beth Kery. Beth is hands down one of my absolute favorite e-rom authors. She was one of the first authors I read after FSOG, and I have been a loyal follower of all of her serials – not to mention her full length novels – ever since. I was so excited to hear she had written another serial e-rom, and I was absolutely ecstatic when I was offered an ARC of the novel in advance.

So, let me just say, I finished reading The Affair last night, and I have been on a serious book hangover all day. So much so, that I haven’t been able to bring myself to start a new book – I’m going in for a re-read immediately.

Vanni and Emma are two of the most original and refreshing characters I’ve read in this genre in a very long time. The story line is creative and compelling. Not cliché or overly predictable. Even when I thought I knew where the story was headed, the author surprised me, not once, but many times over.

Ladies, we have a new book boyfriend to add to the list. Meet Vanni Montand, the brilliant and uber sexy CEO of Montand Motorworks. Vanni’s good looks aren’t the only thing sexy about him, either. His confidence, sexual prowess, self-awareness, and dedication to his family make him completely irresistible. He’s also one of the saddest heroes I’ve read recently. Oh, there were times when his arrogance frustrated me, but just about the time I was ready to shake my head, the author would cleverly weave in some more of Vanni’s back story, and my heart would squeeze for him right along with Emma’s.

Emma is an utterly refreshing heroine. She is the perfect submissive sexual partner, and exactly what Vanni needs. Her sexy innocence is unlike anything Vanni has ever experienced, but her eagerness to learn and to please, coupled with a bit of a bold streak, leaves Vanni fixated to the point of distraction. Outside the bedroom, Emma is anything but submissive. She’s intelligent, strong willed, knows her own mind, and possesses a deep existential understanding of life and death that is exactly what Vanni needs. Vanni and Emma are indisputably one of my favorite couples of 2014.

In addition to creating extraordinary characters, Beth Kery tells an extraordinary story as well. Her voice is fresh and intelligent, her challenging (at times) vocabulary, and her ability to paint a scene are brilliant. She has an incredible gift for putting the reader right in the scene along with the characters – color, texture, taste, smell and sound – she hits all the senses remarkably.

Week 4 just released today (October 7). If you haven’t been following this extraordinary love story, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Five (I need to read this again) stars!

Part 8 includes Chapters 37-41, an epilogue, and an excerpt from Only for You.

So of course all cannot be well with Emma and Vanni. There has to be someone who interferes and tries to break them up. It was kind of lame and I'm really not sure why Emma fell for it.

Meanwhile, Vanni is beside himself. He realizes that he needs Emma.

And they lived happily ever after.....

Should you read this serial?

The Affair is only available as an ebook right now. Each part costs $1.95, so all 8 would be $15.60, which is the price of a trade paperback here in Canada. The writing quality is excellent and the writer does leave you wanting more, especially if you are a fan of the author.

Read this book if you enjoy the billionaire trope, a fantasy life jet-setting to the French Riviera, and steamy hot sex.

Received ARC from publisher that included all 8 weeks.

Beth Kery is one of my favorite erotic/contemporary romance authors. She just knows how to put the passion and intimacy in her stories. And while they’re steamy, she manages to capture the emotional ride her characters take in each and every book.

In The Affair (Weeks 1-8), she introduces us to Emma and Michael. Both characters are complex in their own way, Emma being a little more on the inexperienced side of complexities and Michael being an incredibly flawed and scarred soul. But their opposites are what make them work so well, and what makes their story so beautifully erotic.

I loved experiencing their story. Reading about their exploration of one another was a treat, and left me feeling romantically and erotically content. Which, in my opinion, means the author did exactly what she was supposed to do.

The Affair was a very enjoyable book with so much to offer readers. Emma and Michael are wonderfully written characters, and I’m looking forward to reading more from Ms. Kery in the future.

8 part serial that should have been a book. It didn't feel like a serial. At all.
This all felt superficial and focused much on names and labels.
This one had a lesson in forgiveness. But otherwise I was left unsatisfied thru the whole thing. Writing isnt bad. Just a bit boring.

I’ve always liked Beth Kery books, well the you belong with me collection, but I feel like all her books always make it about a woman that is too below the guy in social status and they fall in love and all that. Also makes the women seem like bimbos lol idk what else to say, I forced myself to finish reading this book.

Yay, but damn

I love a HEA! But I really hoped to see the moment they exchanged rings. The new life in Vanni was beautiful to see rise in him. Emma's understanding of his nature made so much difference in his world. Great series.

3 Almost out of my reading funk stars!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy of Intermix/Penguin

I was given the opportunity to read the completed series in one book. One thing for sure, is that Beth Kery knows how to write steamy stories with sexy dominant males. This book was another nudge to get me out of whiny heroine reading funk but sadly still didn't push me free and clear of it. Why can't heroines ever believe in a positive HEA instead of always guarding and preparing for the shoe to drop. I know that is what makes most of the angst in many romance novels but lately I want more than this theme in romance books.

After reading it as a whole there are elements that make it a blessing and their elements that make it a curse. Reading it as a completed series at time it felt like too much sex and not enough substance but I think if you read it as it was originally as serials than I think you would be left with a different impression of the substance versus sex ratio. The other downfall of reading the whole series at once makes the book extra lengthy, where as reading the novellas week by week wouldn't have made it feel so long.

Since I was given an ARC, I assume most of the mistakes will be caught but there were quite a lot of timeline and detail mistakes that made it distracting to read at times. Fingers crossed they were caught in the final copy.

"It is awful at times. Painful. Scary. But one never sees life more clearly than when death approaches. And maybe that's the biggest gift of death - life's final gift - if we can accept it."

The premise of this series is that full of life hospice nurse Emma Shore meets the step son of one of her dying patients, Michael Montand. Even though he is named Michael he goes by his middle name Vanni, which is short for Giovanni. I'll be honest Vanni was brooding, sexy and dominant but the name Vanni kind of ruined it for me at times. It was hard to see him as this sexy dominant thing when you hear Vanni. Others will disagree with me for sure but sometimes names can make or break a character.

Emma sees the good in everything even death, where Vanni only knows the dark in everything with all that he has lost. Even though Vanni thinks he has nothing to give to anyone, Emma's light starts to change him slowly for the better. At times Emma was very strong and assuring but her self doubt and fear of getting hurt won over too much for me to fully embrace and love her all the time. Damn reading funk!

Emma and Vanni start with a sex only affair but it turns into so much more for them. As Vanni starts to heal in move forward, Emma too realizes that she may see the positive in things but doesn't always live to the fullest. Together they take a chance at something more even though their journey isn't easy. The story was good, some parts I loved more than others, and the steamy component was good but a bit too much at times. I do think if I read it as a serial with space between each installment I may have loved it more, but while I'm in this reading funk it is hard to truly tell.

Title: The Affair: Never Let Go
Author: Beth Kery
Publisher/Year: Penguin Group 11/4/14
Length: 78
Series: The Affair #8

Overview

Upon her return to the Breakers, Emma makes a bracing decision—her affair with Montand will end, but only to make way for a deeper relationship with the man she loves. But Montand’s aunt Vera has plans, too. Vindictive, obsessive, and unsettlingly territorial, Vera insists that Emma leave the Breakers and never look back. And she has the weapon to make it happen: a final secret about Montand that even he doesn’t know, one with such devastating implications that it would surely destroy him and ruin any chance of happiness he might have hoped for with Emma.

Loathe to plunge Montand into despair, Emma decides to heed Vera’s warning. But as Emma first learned when she arrived at the Breakers eight weeks ago, Montand’s family promised many surprises. And there is one more to come that could change everything.

My Thoughts

I was waiting for the other shoe to drop for a while and it seems like it certainly does in this final installment of the series. It's not 1 but 2 things that happen to put us in a bit of a tailspin for the last few chapters.

We're coming upon our return from France - and there's a fire at one of Vanni's factories which keeps him in France while Emma goes back to the US. While we never get resolution there as to what happens, although there's a point in the story where Vanni hints to complications and that he'll tell her about it later - it's still up in the air. part of me thinks sabotage - but since it's never resolved, i don't know that it really matters.

It's really what happens once Emma is back in the US - she goes to the Breakers as Vanni asked her to, and when she gets there Vera is there in full force. She tells Emma that Vnani's going to be further delayed - into the next day and then continues to spew her hatred onto Emma in the sense that she feels like Emma isn't suited for the family, isn't going to last with Vanni and should just high-tail her butt out of there. When that doesn't seem to work fast enough, Vera unleashes some dark family secrets in the hopes that blackmailing Emma to leave will work - and it does. Emma leaves, Vanni comes home to an empty house, and things go from bad to worse fast.

If that wasn't enough, Emma's trying to move on in her life, without much success, but yet at times still just a bit, and then there's a car accident. This is always the point in these types of stories when folks are forced to make a choice - do what makes them happiest or make the choice ot walk away - and i think that in this instance, what we see happen afterwards shakes things up. Secrets that were meant to be kept secret aren't / weren't - and relationships are broken up because of that.

Since it's such a short novella - i don't want to get into anything more - but i think that the underlying bit of this story is a really nice one about not just love, but about forgiveness and balance and setting yourself free. Vanni needed all of that and Emma seemed like just the person to do that all for him, or at least take him down that path to do it.

The one thing that i'll say is that Ms. Kery is very consistent in what she gives us. The way that she designs her characters and her stories always intrigue me and suck me in, and i can't wait to see what's next. In the case of this story though - i kind of wish that i had waited until more of the installments were out before reading - since i feel like they were a bit short in the mid-point, and there wasn't as much substance as i would have liked. but all in all, i'm very happy with this one. Enjoy!

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick

The Affair is an eight part serial by Beth Kery. I was lucky enough to get the entire serial at one time to read, rather than have to wait for each installment. Serials have been huge lately, and I will admit that I am not the most patient of people. So for me, I was glad to have them all available at one time. If you have been holding off on this one until they were all released though, you are in luck because Week 8 is the conclusion of Emma and Montand's story.

Emma Shore first meets the handsome Michael Montand when she begins working at his mansion helping to care for his sick stepmother. Emma is shocked by things that she witnesses, but can't help but find herself drawn to him. She is afraid of what she sees, but yet she also finds herself wanting to open herself up to the possibilities that Montand offers her. Montand knows that he can only offer a woman sex, but for the first time he begins to want more with Emma. She agrees to see where things between them will go, but she will determine the length of time their affair will go on. They compromise on five weeks, and things between them start to get complicated. As both Montand and Emma find themselves developing deep feelings for one another, there are truths and secrets revealed leaving them both to wonder what the future holds. Can they possibly have something together beyond the agreed upon five weeks, or will there be too many things standing in the way of them being together?

I liked Montand a lot. He was sexy and mysterious, and I loved getting to see as each of his layers was revealed. He had moments when he was so sweet and caring, but then he was also protective and alpha. He had been through so much, and you could really see the effect it had on him. I loved seeing him show Emma that she was more than she ever thought, and he never let her get away with thinking that she wasn't good enough or pretty enough. He was exactly what she needed, and I liked how encouraging he was. Emma was the same for Montand. She showed him how to loosen up and what it was like to really live. Because of everything that he had been through he was often serious and seemed stoic. But she was able to bring out another side to him, and I liked seeing how perfect these two were for each other. I thought that they were really hot together, and I loved how Montand was patient with Emma and eased her into his lifestyle and what he wanted from her. But these two had such a strong emotional connection, and I really enjoyed seeing that develop between them the most of all.

Overall, I am so glad that I was able to read all of these parts without waiting in between. I really think that if I had been forced to wait in between installments that I wouldn't have enjoyed the story as much. We really got to see both Emma and Montand grow and change over the course of The Affair, and I think it wouldn't have been as noticeable had I read these separately. I liked the characters a lot though, and I felt like this story was unique and different. The characters were deep and I really felt like they were real. I highly recommend this one, and I think that fans of romance will really enjoy this story. It has everything I look for in a good romance, and I enjoyed the steamy parts just as much as the emotional ones. I look forward to more from Beth Kery in the future.

3.75 stars

I was gifted the series as a set. This is a review for the entire 8 part serial- 3.75 stars

Innocent yet unconventional hospice nurse Emma Shore has secured a new position at The Breakers, the sprawling mansion of enigmatic and dangerously handsome racecar billionaire Michael Montand. Hired as caretaker for Montand's stepmother, Emma expects few complications. But one night, lost in the mansion's maze of corridors, she comes upon a woman and a man she can't identify engaged in a raw, naked interlude of sexual subjugation. Silently, from the shadows, Emma watches - shocked, appalled, and unnervingly aroused.

But Emma wonders... if this mysterious stranger is not Montand, then who is it? And what other surprises are in store for her? Night after sleepless night, she's considering the possibilities. And for the first time in her life, she's not going to run away from them.

3.75 stars--THE AFFAIR is the latest contemporary, erotic romance serial by Beth Kery. Released as an eight part serial THE AFFAIR focuses on hospice nurse Emma Shore and billionaire/racecar owner /developer Michael Montand.

Told from close third person point of view, the eight part storyline follows the building relationship between Emma and Michael. Emma’s position within the Montand household has an expiry date-hired to care for Michael’s dying step mother, Emma ‘accidentally’ witnesses Michael and another woman in a BDSM scene. Both turned off and turned on, Emma will come face to face with the man who would eventually bring Emma into his world. When Emma walks in on her boyfriend of two years having sex with another woman, Emma is free to explore what it is she truly wants.

The relationship between Emma and Michael begins as employer and employee but soon develops into something more. When Michael tells Emma he doesn’t do relationships and the only thing he can offer is sex, Emma offers Michael five weeks of sex and adventure then she will walk away. Michael will soon realize that five weeks with Emma is not enough-he wants a lifetime. The sex scenes are numerous, intimate and provocative.

THE AFFAIR is also a story of family, betrayal and letting go. There are moments of heartbreaking sorrow for a man who has lost everyone that he has loved and in return was rejected by the one person who should have been there from the start. Michael’s family is the epitome of dysfunctional and in this he is a man who will not commit to something more.

The world building brings the reader onto the racecar circuit and Grand Prix tours of Europe. The secondary characters include both Emma and Michael’s extended family members, friends and frenemies. Everyone has an agenda or a connection to the past.

The writing style is simple. There is no over the top angst or anxiety as the outcome is predictable. The BDSM premise is secondary to the storyline but it does command a good portion of the story. Michael’s persona did not scream Dominant but more of a need to control the world around him. The billionaire Dom and inexperienced sub is a familiar scenario. There are no hardcore BDSM scenes, no safe words, no anxious moments or questions of consent.

THE AFFAIR is an erotic romance storyline with a happily ever after. Fans of Beth Kery will recognize her signature BDSM storyline trope and you can’t help but fall in love with her leading characters.

Rating: 3.5 stars

This was an intriguing story line about a nurse (Emma) sent to a rich man's (Vanni) home to care for his dying stepmom. An "arrangement" of sexual nature is made as they both set their limits. The most exciting part of the story for me was the armoire scene because I thrive on angst in a novel and this was the epicenter of that angst for me. I felt The Affair was lacking in character build-up regarding Vanni. Vanni was a mystery and I think the weekly separations in the story drug out our ability to connect with him. I was pleased with how Beth showed Emma and Vanni's growth as they didn't remain stagnant in their self-exploration and forgiveness. Vanni was stubborn in this regard until the end of the book, so this was frustrating as we didn't what I felt would've been his "prime" without those burdens weighing him down. It was also pleasant to see that Emma is a strong, independent, and courageous woman as she was a crucial aspect in Vanni's growth, instead of the typical struggling girl meets rich man and rich man turns caveman. The break up into weeks also had me feeling a climax of sorts in the storyline didn't come till near the end of their "arrangement", which was then resolved followed by the completion of the series being nearly over. (Please keep in mind I read this with the complete series in hand and did not experience the "break" between Emma & Vanni's weeks). I was overall pleased and it was a HAWT read, but the mystery without angst left me with a lacking feeling. Give this a try and find your next book crush!

NOTE: REVIEW IS FOR ALL 8 PARTS IN THE SERIES

There is something to be said about an author who isn’t afraid to take risks in her writing. For me, I see Beth Kery as fearless. In this eight part serial story, Kery weaves an intricate and intense romance that touches on several things that are sure to make readers hot.

Emma Shore is the newest addition to the Breakers, a majestic mansion owned by racecar billionaire Michael Montland. In the first part, Emma witnesses an interlude that both shocks and arouses her in equal measures and this kicks starts the story in a big way.

Though the story has been initially released in eight parts, I read it all at once. I’m not the most patient of readers and found that this is the best way to make serials work for me. Serials can be tricky to write, and read for that matter, but so far, I’ve come to realize that Beth Kery is among the best who do it.

The buildup staggers which really helps in keeping the reader engaged to the storyline. While I can understand the reasons why Kery does the things she does and the characters make the decisions they do, I can imagine that it may not suit everyone. However, as I read, I remembered that writing a serial is quite a different experience than writing a novel. Something needs to bring the readers back for each installment. I believe Kery achieved that well with this book.

REVIEW:
Seriously hot romance! I love erotic romances with stong alpha males and Montand is one of the ultimate alphas. He's a powerful billionaire use to getting anything he wants and Emma is a nurse that draws his interest and fascinates him. This story was fast paced and kept me up all night reading it. I couldn't put it down. This was a well written romance filled with mystery, suspense and scorching hot romance. Beth Kery described the characters and delivered their story in such a way that made me feel their emotions and experience their story along with them. The Affair is an eight part serial that I read all at once. I recommend getting them all and reading them back to back as one story. This book is on my favorites romances of 2014 list and I really hope Beth Kery will be writing about another character in this book. I think Montand's cousin deserves his own story.

Okay, here is my review for all books....

Book 1 - started of amazing since the H and the h were just being introduced...
Book 2 - liking it....
Book 3 - still liking it....
Book 4 - still liking it....
Book 5 - still liking it....
Book 6 - okay... i am now sinking...
Book 7 - do I want to continue reading this.... ahmm sure just for sake of finishing it....
Book 8 - I don't even know what I read in this book...

I am giving this entire series a 3.5 stars to cover all the effort that this author put....

The story line is really good until the last couple of books... seems dragging... the sex scenes are not that great.. I mean I read better... The chemistry between the two main characters is just OKAY.. I didn't feel the chills or the goosebumps when you are reading a really good story...

But because I finished all the 6 books, I thought oh, why the hell not... just finish them all.

I will say this though, our Ms. Beth Kery is a really really good writer.... she knows what she wants to write and delivers it... therefore, I am going to read more of Ms. Beth Kery's work...

Until next reading.. :)

I'm reading Week 6, 7, 8 back to back. I have to say these books are not my favorites at all. I will read them to find out what happens but they are not up to par as compared to her other books. It appears that the author may have written these books in a great hurry. There are a few grammatical errors which is disturbing. Sexy scene are good just still not up to authors standards. I would review these books and just bring them all together in one book so that new readers will see here real ability.

This is most definitely not worth a weekly series. This is not 'The Green Mile'. The Green Mile was a series written by Stephen King and each book in the series was issued on a monthly basis. Now that was a great read and although I suffered waiting for each book to be released it was worth the trouble and caused a lot of conversations even with strangers. This series would not have been worth my time. The cost of the books is not worth it. At this time the books are going for $1.99. That is $16.00 for all 8 books. That is a rip off. So, I say review, correct and combine all books into one really good book and try again.

I do not recommend this series.

Once again thank you to Headline Eternal for approving me for a copy of this via NetGalley.

Ah! The final instalment in this whirlwind romance! I have really enjoyed this little series and I really hope it all gets put together into one novel because I think it’s definitely one that I will be re-reading!

The holiday is over and the return home hits both characters with a bit of a bump. Being back in Chicago is like the equivalent of the bubble bursting and reality starts to set back in – along with a meddling housekeeper!

I was not anticipating week 8 taking the turn that it did and it really threw me for a loop! One thing that is completely evident though is how deeply both characters feel for one another and I love a happy ending so I was really rooting for them to come to their senses by the end of their affair!

This series has had me hooked but I also have found a new author whose writing style I love! I will definitely be looking out for more from Beth from now on!

YAY!!!! I am so happy how this book ended, I was really worried Beth Kery was going to break our hearts and not make it a happily ever after. I am glad that wasn't the case because I just loved Emma and Montand together, they were each others other half. It was really beautiful how Emma was able to help Montand with his deamons and transform him into a better man. I mean what girl doesn't want to try to fix a broken man and know she is the glue holding him together. I loved it.Great Series!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed & looked forward to each weekly installment of The Affair. Wish it didn't have to end. Each week I never knew what to expect but rooted for Vanni & Emma, their growing relationship and what they brought out in each other. It was a wonderful ending and once again, Beth Kery does not disappoint! This entire series is a must read! BRAVO BETH!
