Remembered Dryden chiefly as a dramatist, and this collection rather light on plays. Not a huge poetry person but I did enjoy much of Dryden's verse - particularly "Alexander's Feast" and "Absalom and Achitophel" (liner notes very helpful for the latter). Still do not have a clear grasp of "Essay of Dramatic Poesy" - would probably be helpful to have any grounding at all in non-Shakespeare Elizabethan authors or the ancients.
Quality and relevance of Frost's commentary varied - phrase and vocabulary clarifications were placed at the start of sections, which took some getting used to. Wished he had provided more context notes (particularly for the sections of "songs" and prologues/epilogues) and fewer bibliographic references to ancient authors. Then again, this appear to be a volume targeted for academic use and I am a lay reader, so the book may not have been designed exactly with me in mind.
