A stand alone book based on the bestselling Growing Pains Series. You do not need to have read the series to embark on this read.
Cassie thought she had it all—a great brother, a new soon to be sister-in-law, and a bunch of great friends. With her chosen family growing, and her life in L.A. going great, she never thought she’d ask for anything more. But when she sees the way her brother and his soon-to-be wife look at each other, Cassie realizes something’s missing. A love she didn’t think she needed suddenly becomes the one thing she can’t live without.
Unfortunately, her problems will have to wait. When Cassie is asked by her good friend, Peter, to be his fake-girlfriend for a family reunion, she can’t say no. She is now responsible for helping him keep a secret that could tear his family away from him. And if she didn’t think it could get any worse, she meets Peter’s brother. Tall and brooding with a sleeve of tattoos and a Harley, he’s a bad boy with an irresistible smile.
Jace has sworn away women. After he caught his fiancé in bed with his best friend, he can’t imagine ever trusting again. He sells his house and heads to his parent’s place in wine country, needing a retreat away from his life to get his head on straight. There he meets Cassie. Chaotic but so full of life, she has his head spinning. But his resolve to stay away from the opposite sex, not to mention his brother’s girlfriend, has him keeping his distance.
With loyalty standing in her way, Cassie must do everything she can to protect Peter by keeping his secret. But staying away from Jace turns out to be the hardest challenge of her life.

“That painting is called Love and Chaos. Ben got the idea after he had a dream about Cassie. He started watching her then. Noticing her. She’s insane most of the time. Limitless energy, all over the place—but she has an extremely deep and caring heart. She loves hard and chaotically, and Ben decided that any man strong enough, and steadfast enough, to return that love would be in for a wild ride. You’re the only person to step in front of it like this and stare. That includes some of her other…male friends. The only one.”
‘Love and Chaos’ was one of those reads that made me think ‘My, I wish I’d read this sooner’ because this is the kind of romance that pins my eyes to the pages, has my gears engaged and my attention diverted. Willow Summers is an author to keep any eye on in the romance genre and I’m definitely going to keep my peepers open for more! This is the fourth book in the Growing Pains series but can definitely be read as a standalone which was what I did because I haven’t read the three previous books which take place from Cassie’s brother’s POV. This book is abundance of fun, passion and camaraderie with characters to pedal a fantastically energetic story wrapped up with a big dose of love and chaos with love challenging the uncertainties of insecurity.
“And you never know which way the winds are going to blow. One minute, angel. The next, villain, laughing all the while. But she’s really fun if you just roll with it. She is absolutely the salt-of-the-earth. One hundred percent gold.”
Cassie McAdams is our female protagonist, sister to a protective brother and a friend to many - the crazy and gregarious alike. After being asked by her gay friend Peter to accompany him to his family’s annual get together masquerading as his girlfriend, Cassie takes the offer to help out a friend in need and visit Peter’s family in the wine country. Peter’s family don’t know of his sexuality, it’s been a secret well-secreted from his blood because he’s terrified of their rejection, suffocated with the idea of losing the love of his family. But it’s his father’s traditional, orthodox way of placement and values that has Peter quaking in his fashionable shoes, and afraid of challenging his dad’s habitual domain.
“There’s no one like a loved one that can make you feel as on top of the world. Equally, no one can make you feel so low your belly scrapes the deck. “
“My father tolerates me because I almost fit in his ideal role of a man. Let that crumble, and watch what happens."
Peter chose to live a lie with the expense of keeping hidden his instinctive identity which is also his biggest secret. But lucky for him Cassie offers a solution, also offering herself a chance to divert attention off of her own life. Charismatic, vivacious and wonderfully quirky, Cassie was a relatably kindred character to me - her ever-changing temperament was very much parallel to my own so it’s safe to say I loved her character and her characteristics as a protagonist because she presents something different. With a competitive sporty disposition, stubborn flexibility and a sporadic spirit that all span an individual woman who resembles the heart of a storm but in that core sits a tender heart that treasures love and wants acceptance for her singularity. Cassie is a bit of everything, she flies and rotates in every direction and is always up to challenge prejudiced opinion.
‘Jace chuckled and headed toward Peter. “Where’d you find her?” “In the aisle for psycho white women for hire.” Peter followed Jace. “I can hear you two idiots, you know that, right?” Cassie said, thinking pretty seriously about throwing something.'
On her first visit to the wine country Cassie swaps words with a handsome, gorgeous as sin, Harley-riding stranger, whom she soon runs into again when she realises she’ll be spending a lot more time in proximity and his company. Cassie’s reasons for being here tie closer to her one-chance encounter..because of course he just happens to be Peter’s eldest brother Jace. Cassie’s taste In men has thus far proved tasteless with little substance, and although Jace has the the perfectionist looks to match, is Cassie just rolling with the same wild motions and mistakes of romance? Is Jace just another pretty face, a man to resemble the ones before him who have carved Cassie and poured her into a cast of insecure reflex?
‘Peter rolled his eyes. “See? They like you, though. Think you’re a lady.” “Joke’s on them.”
Cassie doesn’t believe she has the qualities that most would want in a long-term partner - her history with men has only washed her with the brittle hands of self-doubt and dried her with the coarse washcloth of manifested vulnerability. Alas, Jace isn’t foreign to such feelings either. Along with Cassie’s presence brings forth revived passion for this stone-faced man of pensive conduct because when he meets a beautiful ball of turbulence named Cassie he’s trapped in her crazy and forced into the oscillating lull of her unpredictable behaviour… and he doesn’t want mercy. Jace is subdued, mellow, restrained but caging his nature by licking his own wounds and salving his own wounds.
“Uh oh, here comes my knight in scowling armor.”
‘He’d lost his faith in loyalty that day. Lost it in a big way.’
’He was so large and powerful, but so stoic. And that intent focus; it was like he had the power to wave away all other distractions and hone in on her individually; as if the world was a nuisance and he chose not to bother with it in favor of her.'
When Peter observes the obvious chemistry dancing idly and repressively between his brother and his friend he feels damned either way; facing the butcher’s block and potential shunning by unleashing this truth into the family home or keeping his secret and neglecting Jace and Cassie’s happiness. Jace is facing his own dilemma; how is he supposed to deny the natural chemistry already present and building between him and Cassie without hurting his brother’s trust? A powerful embellishing glow can’t go amiss or forsaken but a platonic distance has to be kept what with suspicious eyes following and watching.
Her gaze settled on his. “Are you a narc?” “What?” he asked, glancing around. “Why? What’d you do?” She shifted her weight. He ripped his gaze away from the shapely hip that jutted out. “If I hide this chocolate in selfishness, will you tell?” “Why do you need to hide it? Don’t like to share?” She stared. “No,” he assured her dutifully. “I won’t tell. We can always just get you more chocolate, though.” “Yes…we could. Or you could just keep your big mouth shut."
Is this Cassie plunging into her customary lets love fast and wild, or is Jace the real deal? But sometimes when you know, you know, and when you do you just might believe the words ‘insecurity’ and ‘caution’ have no place in your life. I like that Jace and Cassie are both morally considerate with relationships and they make a fantastic couple! Cassie is different, she’s individual and most would find it a stress and burden to find and cultivate the beauty in that. But Jace just fits with her as a thoughtful admirer, not scared to approach her pandemonium. Hesitancy is terrifying for Cassie because she’s been carved from it. Vulnerability plagues Jace because he’d been hurt by showing it. Cassie’s loyalty to Peter has to mean something but will love outshine loyalty…
‘Disorientation crossed his face first and in one moment his world tilted on its axis—he was so profoundly lost he had to reach forward and brace himself on the wall behind her—before everything cleared. Warmth filled his gaze then. Solidity. Assurance. His ever unbreakable confidence.’
‘Peter smiled that sad smile again, a man in reach of an angel, only able to watch it spread its wings and fly away.'
What to say, what to say! ‘Love and Chaos’ balances a faultless and ample ambience of family fun and powerful passion. I’ve always been of the steadfast belief that characters fuel and enrich any and every story and i remain unwavering in that belief - You’ll love this collection of fun and witty characters, and you’ll also thrive in a genuine, mutual, brewing intimacy between two people who admirably and bravely decide to jump in with both feet, deciding to crumple insecurity between their own embrace.
‘His gaze bored into her, pushing passed her barriers. Opening her up. Reaching into that place he’d found last night. That dark place of insecurity. The spot she hid, worried she wasn’t enough. Worried something within her was too deeply flawed to be loved.’
“Don’t be ruled by your fears, honey. Have faith and hope, the rest will work out."
‘Love and Chaos’ is a combination of desire, warmth, heat, the banter of a wholesome family with the pressures of familial acquiescence. With jostling jokes, playful competition and the kind of family idiocy we all feel and know, Summers certainly took a punch at convention while giving us a seat to watch what can happen when a sprightly ball of love and chaos chances love with a man who takes a shine on both.
“I am usually pretty level-headed—I didn’t appreciate that snort, Jason. Anyway, as I was saying, I am pretty level-headed—seriously, stop snorting, it’s true—but I can get a little…shall we say…” “Wild? Insane? Bat-shit crazy?” Peter smirked at them as they neared.'
Endlessly funny. This is a story of what can go right after so many relationship wrongs.
‘Two psychos hanging out together. What could go wrong?’
‘She glanced at the beer. Then at the wine. Then at her stuff on the ground. “He just got the last word.” Well, that would never do.’
Trigger Warning: Descriptive sex scenes and swearing. One scene depicts a character revealing his sexuality so if you have sensitivities to negative reactions to same sex relationships be mindful of this.
Haven't read the other books, and don't plan on doing so. Freebie on iBooks.
I could have done without the grammar errors and the scene about "what fantasies have you fulfilled so far?" and the past lovers talk more notably focussing on him.
But! They've both had their fair share of ex's, she's gunshy, and he's been hurt, she's intense, he's mellow, she's chatty, he's more silent and sweet. And somehow it wasn't "insta-love" but there was an immediate attraction which quickly became more with good character development and conversation. And he treated her so good from start to end, never failing.
I also really liked the conscious effect to accept the gay brother; when you've been raised in a conservative family - hearing about a gay family member doesn't warrant the "yay-gay! Everyone is happy" reaction. It can be uncomfortable, and unfamiliar but it's about adapting and effort. Our reactions and familiarities change with time. Personally, I found Jace's behaviour acceptable, suitable and honest.
Wow, K.F just doesn’t disappoint! I was looking forward to this story because Cassie is a fun and crazy character, introduced to us in the Growing Pains series. Cassie’s chaotic personality shines through right from the beginning and the anticipation of meeting her match is sparked. A match well worth the wait…
Cassie is skeptical of her ability to pull off her role as gay friend Peter’s girlfriend at his family gathering and that skepticism shoots through the roof when she meets Peter’s super-hot brother Jason or Jace as his friends and siblings call him. Jace is a sexy Harley riding bad boy with tattoos that catches Cassie’s eye instantly. He is dominant, protective, loyal, athletic, intense – everything a girls dreams of in her man, the perfect hero.
Their journey is not that of a typical romance book, K.F loves to break molds and fight tradition and I love that in her writing. I laughed, I almost cried and I had a great ride. K.F you’ve done it again!
This book was definitely wordy. It was meant to be a quick read but turned into a week of trying to finish because of the schizo main lead. She had some serious ADD issues. Jace was so amazing I loved him. All the male characters were a trip. Perhaps because I tried reading book one and DNF'ed it and then skipped to book four I missed a lot of the dynamics in the friendships. Either way the scenes of drinking were just beyond obnoxious. The only redeeming scene in the book is when Peter finally came out to his family. That scene was so heartbreaking. Best scene in the book and it wasn't even about the main leads. This is the fourth book I've tried reading from this author that isn't PNR. I don't believe I'll try any others. She should stick to the PNR genre.
pretty good character development, and relatable leads, but sometimes I got annoyed reading it. The wine tasting trip was too long winded and seemed inconsequential to the plot. Same with the part where he meets her friends. It wasn't terrible overall, but it wasn't amazing either. Just ok.
*** MINOR SPOILERS *** This book is related to the Growing Pains trilogy which featured Sean and Krista. This book is about Sean’s sister, Cassie. The author also writes under the name K.F. Breene and I like the books under that pen name better. Cassie’s friend, Peter, asks her to pretend to be his girlfriend during a week long family visit. Peter is gay and has never come out to his family. He is afraid of his family’s reaction, particularly his father’s. The book was written in 2014, so it is interesting to think about how much people’s reactions to someone being gay have changed. More people now are accepting, though that is not universal. Peter’s concerns are understandable. Cassie is a mercurial character. Sometimes she is incredibly insightful, sometimes she is insecure, sometimes she is not. The author jokes that she changes her personality frequently. I found some of her remarks to be incredibly funny or astute. For example, Cassie notices Jace’s reaction to something and thinks “His woman must’ve done - or was doing - a number on him. He’d probably forced down all his joy in life so she couldn’t get to it.” I thought this was a great line and there were others. Jace, or Jason, is Peter’s older brother. When Cassie and Jace meet, they have an immediate attraction to each other. They are very honest with each other, which they both need for different reasons. The situation is complicated by Cassie acting as Peter’s girlfriend. Jace’s former fiancé cheated on him several times and is now hesitant to commit. Cassie, however, blindsides him and they fall in love in the space of a few days. The story has a roller coaster of emotions. Some of the story is too dramatic. There was a lot of giggling. So much giggling. There is a lot of s*x. Some words are misused in different spots. In addition, I am not sure the author uses the term ‘groin tightening’ correctly, as she uses it to indicate Cassie becoming aroused. I have never heard it used relative to a woman before as it usually indicates the tightening of muscles leading to a male’s erection. Note for some: Jace mentions that he has had a threesome and “back door” s*x in the past. Jace and Cassie have “back door” s*x as well as s*x with toys. Jace is frequently described as being dominant. It did not seem like a dom/sub relationship but he seemed to be more in charge which Cassie seemed to like and finds him to be an anchor for her. There is also a lot of drinking.
The secondary characters are fairly well drawn. There was one scene I did not care for when Cassie and Jace went out drinking with her friends. Her friend did not want to do a shot, and Cassie held his nose and made him drink one. This was not appropriate behavior.
I more or less liked the book but will probably not continue reading this author. The quality of the writing was uneven. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. I did like some of the funnier or more insightful lines.
Almost DNF’ed it. Cassie is weird with ADD issues. I don't have any problems with people with disabilities but she seemed over the top. If she’s real in real life, we wouldn’t have clicked. I would have hated or ignored her. Jace is great though! The wine tasting was too dragging and unbelievable. I felt the author prolonged it as filler. I thought this book is short but I got annoyed with those extra unimportant chapters. I was also irritated with the ‘photo bomb’ thing! Uggh! One or two is okay but the whole chapter or two is too much for me. The sex in H’s room was horrible! They should have been discreet! They can be heard all over the hallway with his brother and Peter listening! Who does that! I mean, even I can be discreet with a house full of people and I am happily married! I got a headache after reading this book! The only positive thing I can remember is when Peter came out!
wow i love this book you can so see the chemistry that there is between jace and cassie and its really nice and in some scenarios in the book, i was able to relate to the family upon their views of their father and although probably most of it was fantasy written, there was some parts that were realsitic hence why i was able to relate to them - so because of this i was fully engaged when reading because i felt connected in a way to the characters which is a nice feeling really good steamy romance in here and its even more nice when jace's fantasy becomes true of cassie on the sofa sleeping with their baby in her arms also sleeping when he comes back form work - which was really nice and romantic.
I read this book years ago for the first time and every once in a while I do a reread. It’s a solid contemporary romance where you feel like you really get to know the characters. Cass is chaotic and funny, Jace is silent and sexy. What more do you need? Definitely give it a try.
Without having read the earlier books in the series I can feel the deep relationships between the characters. Love this love story and can't wait to read how it all began for the other amazing characters
Overall I enjoyed Jace and Cassie’s story. Both characters are likable want only the best for the ones they love. The story did drag a bit in a couple of parts, which kept this from being a 5 star.
I haven't read any other books in this series but I will be looking them up after this one. It was so good, a great story and fab characters, loved it.
OH MY EVER LOVING BISUITS I needed a good read! I absolutely LOVED this book. K.F. Breene is AMAZING and I love how realistic her stories feel. It's like you are one of the group just sitting back and watching their shenanigans, and in this book there are definitely some shenanigans!
This is a spin off from the Growing Pain Series, which if you haven't read them you better get on that train, but Love & Chaos can be read alone. This is Cassie's story after the series and she is put into a sticky situation that keeps getting worse by the second. Off on an adventure with her friend, Peter, she travels to his family's reunion as his date only to bump into some serious man candy...I'm not joking!!! Jace is freaking HOT and has an irresistible "bad boy needing mending" vibe that just tugs on women's wombs everywhere! I think he is giving some book boyfriends a run for their money!*wink*
So beyond my obvious like for Jace, there were also some VERY interesting characters that come up in this book that had me laughing, shaking my head and wanting to punch in the balls (you will all know what I mean when you read it). There are great light hearted moments but this book does get serious and touches upon a serious issue. Emotions are going to come out while reading this book I assure you!
There were no room for error! Flow was great, angst, sexual tension, comic relief, drama, and sex. What more could you want? ONE CLICK NOW!
I received an ARC from KF Breene and I was so happy that I did, If you are looking for a Romance (NOT erotica) novel that is NOT part of some long series this is it! This was so good to me that it made me want to start the Growing Pains series and learn all of the characters stories. You did NOT need to read the series to enjoy this book though.
I loved that this brought up some real issues - being yourself in the face of rejection, having your past hold you back from your future, family strife and unity, overcoming insecurities and fear, coming out to the people closest to you, and trusting yourself. This hit home and made me laugh and sigh.
I love Jace and Cassie. Cassie's friends made me want friends like them and Jace's family almost had me picking up the phone to call my own family just to chat. Cassie faces some real struggle when she poses as Peter's girlfriend and end up meeting and being attracted to Peter's brother, Jason. Peter still hasn't come out and doesn't really want to because his father is so straight laced. You get to see family alliances and unconditional love from Peter's family and you get to see Cassie blossom under such a large family. All of these characters in some shape way or form over come and achieve something.
K.F. Breene really makes the characters relatable and funny. She engages you to love these people and want to know more about them. This was a fantastic read and I am thrilled that I was given the chance. If you haven't already DEFINITELY READ THIS BOOK!

I've read a lot of K.F's work now, she never fails to please. Love and Chaos is certainly no exception. Her characters are always so refreshing, down to earth....normal, a trait you don't often find in romances. Cassie is just fabulous, the girl every woman wants to be and the woman every guy wants to...get to know "better" and Jace, her perfect man; tattoos, looks, personality, motorbikes....**sigh**. The storyline, although not completely unfamiliar, is still unique enough and realistic enough to make you want to read on until your matchsticks snap under the pressure. I like that you move from Cassie's perspective to Jace's throughout the book ( I really dislike when authors roll out alternate POV books!) I like that, even though Cassie has a little wobble, it is just that, a little wobble, a sentence, maybe two, not a whole God damned chapter about how her heart would be broken, her life over blah blah blah. I like so many things about this book. I'm not going into more detail, just pick it up for yourself and give it a go...in fact, even though it does work perfectly as a stand alone, I'd actually suggest you read the other books in the Growing Pains series first...or afterwards if you so wish !! You'll meet a lot of the players from this book, particularly Cassie and her cohort...I'm particularly hoping for a story about Ben sometime...boy, he intrigues me!
ARC I read the first 3 growing pain books quite awhile ago, this is the 4th book but it is also a stand alone. I really like the fact it actually can be read two ways. It should appeal to people like myself who love continuing characters and those who want to read a book then bang! it's done. This is nicely written for those two audiences in one book. The story line is one I am starting to see more of theses days. KFB addresses the continuing challenges of the gay community, and how a persons family is usually the worse kind of judge. The ability to recreate yourself to suit both your family and your true individuality are sometimes not the same persona ... whether that be gay or straight. Both Peter and Cassie are at a pivotal point in their lives, what is more important their family or true love? I enjoyed Cassie and Jason, they are both struggling to find acceptance and not be judged just by their exterior or perceived qualities. They both find personal strength in each other which is uniquely odd and yet perfect for each other. The characters are all just quirky enough to be real, entirely lovable and believable. This book made me laugh and want to hang out with them as well. With friends like Cassie's and Peters who needs enemies anyway. A quick satisfying read, I read it twice.
Can Love trump prejudice Gay friend (Peter) and his boyfriend (Marcus) asks Cassie to pretend to be girlfriend to Peter for family get together. Oldest Hot brother Jason (Jace) and Cassie hit it off but she’s “taken”. Jace just got rid of a cheating fiancé. But Cassie doesn't know that so she thinks Jace is off limits as well. Peter ends up spending most his time with sister-in-laws and Cassie plays the sports with the brothers and spend even more time with Jace. Peter is afraid to come out to family because of his father. Doesn’t want to be ostracized by family. Cassie has always had bad luck with boyfriend. She goes for the unreliable bad boy type. But Jace is a bad boy type but is he reliable and trustworthy? This is a wonderful HEA with lots of twists and turns. Overprotective brother to Cassie come in to the picture in the end as well. Well written and very entertaining to read. It keeps you guessing what going to happen next. Will the one’s meant to be together ever get there? Will Peter tell his family and be Ostracized or welcomed? I received a free copy for an honest review.
I received an ARC copy of Love and Chaos and, as with all of K.F. Breene’s book, I instantly fell in love. If you want to read a true romance that will make you laugh out, has some hot sex scenes (but doesn’t rely on sex to create the story), with lots of strong personalities to keep things fast paced then you will love this story as well.
Breene creates characters that are real, so full of personality and I really relate to each of their struggles on some level. She makes me laugh, cry and love with each of them. Cassie is my kind of crazy and keeps everyone on their toes. Peter is desperately trying to be who his Dad expects him to be instead of himself. And then we have Jace who has been dealing with being hurt from his previous relationship and is hot, hot, HOT!!! Add in the rest of Peter and Jace’s family and you have a whole lot of laughs and love.
If you read the Growing Pains series you must read this one. This is the story of Cassie, i loved her in the Growing Pains series so i was really happy to read her story. It is standalone and very interesting. Dialogs betwen Cassie and Jace are so good, funny, sexy... Oh and the sex...well.. read it and you will see it for your self. In this story Cassie helpes her gay friend Peter whit familiy issues. His family doesn't know that he is gay, so he brings Cassi to play the role of his girlfriend. But everything gets complicated when she meets Peters brother Jace. She falls for him badly, but he doesn't know his brother is gay so hi thinks she is his girlfriend...it is hilarious at some time , really good read. Well that is all you will get from me.
If this is your first book from auhtor Willow Summers, i recommend you read her first book in Growing Pains series.
So happy about this book! Loved getting to see Cassie in a starring role, and getting into her head. Such a great story with tons of laughs, but enough drama to keep it interesting. This series is what really made me connect with K.F. Breene and her works. I couldn't be happier for this addition to the series. Just a fantastic read, and couldn't have asked for more with this one. Love Cassie and Jace...such complimentary personalities that just work together. Plus all the steam between them...needed a cold drink after some of the scenes! Couldn't put this one down once I started, so huge applause to K.F. Breene for hitting it out of the park again! Can't wait for whatever is next : )
This book was really really great. I need more of Jace and Cassie! The epilogue just wasn't enough. I haven't read the other books in the growing pains series so I don't know much about the other characters but it so didn't matter.
Jace was just the best everything about him I loved. I can only hope this author would put out a novella or something more of these two. I could have read about them forever.
Just the type of book I love. Low on drama, smooth fun loving relationships. It really was wonderful.
There was absolutely nothing I did not love. If I could give more stars than I totally would.
