In August 1986, Hal Roth set out to race around the 27,550 miles from Newport to Newport. This book is his intensely personal account of failure and triumph in his struggle against gales, flat calms, mountainous seas, gear failure, injury and illness.
I loved this book. The technical skills of single-handing a 50 foot sailboat around the world - through swell and gale - are abundantly displayed throughout the book. Any conception that circumnavigation is for the average sailor and weekend adventurer is erased as mechanical, environmental and mental challenges occur daily at sea. But the sea calls and I have set a goal of many long passages, so this book opened my eyes to the maritime experience.
