Wonderful anthology of very inventive, short, erotic, fantasy stories running a gamut of sexualities
A nice range of fantasy/supernatural/mythical themed erotic short stories that cater to a wide range of couplings, mostly male/female but also some male/male, and female/female pairings, as well as a couple of stories that branch out into more fluid and/or larger groupings. Overall, the writing was very inventive and enticing, with a decent balance of sizzle with enticing characters and stories.
1. Sacrifices to Ecstasy - 19 pages - James Wolf (mm, mf) 2.5 stars for an intriguing "virgin sacrifice" setting with an "o.k." sacrificial scene
There was an interesting set-up to this piece of explicit deflowering of virgins (or near-virgins) for a religious rite by otherwise celibate monks. Obviously the idea is very kinky and provocative, and the "virgin sacrifice" trope is no doubt the centerpiece of erotic fantasy settings, but this brief and eventually explicit story generally didn't work too well for me. The characters were intriguing, giving the center piece - the ritualistic deflowering - definite if brief context and setting. Still, it was so brief it really didn't provoke enough reaction (either character/setting wise or sizzling steam) to rate too highly for me.
The ideas and the initial writing were intriguing, but neither the sex nor the story were more than an quick, semi-interesting and a bit heated diversion for me. (Some readers, no doubt, may find the sizzle to be more enticing.)
2. The Thief's Dungeons - 8 pages - Madeleine Swan (mf, ff) 3 stars for a "secretly capture and ravish a virginal Lady on the way to her wedding" story
The core of this erotic short is an interesting, medieval setting for a young Lady's carnal education, a dangerous escapade where her status might not protect her. The f/f scene seemed added on to the primary "virginal Lady captured and ravished" scene (like it was added to make it Bisexual content to be included in this anthology). It's a decent, erotic short for those looking for a nice medieval flavor to a seize and deflower story.
3. Changing Flame - 45 pages- James L. Wolf (trams/fluid) 4 stars for originality, gender fluidity, and BDSMish (nonconsenual) medieval slave torture
This was an unexpectedly novel tale of magical/fantastical medieval gender fluidity, including hermaphroditism and gender shifting in a rather original manner. It also has slavery and non-consensual medieval torture (but mostly on the level of harsh BDSM play), so it's great for fans of gender bending Medieval slave/serf torture/BDSM-play stories.
I loved it for its originality, gender shifting, and nicely harsh BDSM/light medieval tortures themes (with an implied HEA).
4. Fools Rush In - 24 pages - Elizabeth Schechtner (mf, mm) 4.5 stars for a short but enchanting tale of licevious trickery.
I found this to be a enchanting erotic short fantasy story of greed, lust, drunkenness, trickery, and the dangers of dallying in a temple. It provided a great balance of fantasy setting, story, and character and a nice amount of gender-bending heat (include lusty male/female and male/male encounters).
A wonderful supernatural and smutty fairy tale of trickery, debauchery, and the fate that follows.
5. Milk - 9 pages - Claryssa Berg (ff) 5 stars for a very short but entracingly explicit and entertaining tale
A sizzling short, very erotic retelling of the story of Snow White, with an extraordinarily wicked "stepmother" and a magical masochistic theme that teases harsh pleasure from the tale.
I normally prefer relationship-centered romance (of varying degrees of heat) to physically focused erotica, but this short piece was expertly explicit while weaving a brief but entrancing fairy tale.
6. To Market - 31 pages - by Elizabeth Schechter (mm) 4.5 stars - for a ultimately sweet tale with some nice, fantastical twists and turns
Saving a friend, saving seed, and saving a love - Goblin style. A delightfully decadent short story of a bastard witch who needs to venture to a Goblin market to save his beloved friend. The writing reads like a traditional fairy tale, with nasty authority figures, young friendship and love, and a supernatural element. It adds some explicit heat and nicely naughty ingredients before winding its way to an ending.
Also includes a male witch and very fae-like goblins (and Goblin seed), which made it all the more tasty.
7. The Snake and the Lyre - 11 pages - by Annabeth Leong (f) 3.5 stars - trickery leads a bride to an eventful pre-wedding night
Although not usually my cup of tea, the treacherous road to hell is paved with ill-fated intentions wrapped in writhing, wedding bliss spilling too soon, a serpents tongue threatening the lyre and the lyrics.
8. Gods Among Men - 42 pages - by Jacqueline Brocker (mm) 4 stars - divine erotic struggles manifested in modern day Croatia
Excellent story idea and execution, but not for me. (I've clearly been reading romance for too long, as Ilya's wife and marriage ruined it for me, even though the theme is epic, mythic, and eternal.)
9. The Fair, Laudanum, and Passion - 12 pages - by Madeleiene Swann (mffm) 3.5 stars - Victorian propriety meets carnies
The story didn't do much for me until the very end, when everything suddenly made sense.
Gets that bisexual extra star! Some of the stories were quite well executed. For an anthology, the quality of writing was pretty high. A favorite was “The Snake and the Lyre” by Annabeth Leong. Elizabeth Schechter's work is also consistently good.
