Lisa has a secret lover, an escape from the pressures of caring alone for her son, who has cerebral palsy. Once a month she meets Jay, just for the weekend, free from all responsibilities. Their time together is perfect – until the day when Jay doesn't show up, and everything she thought she knew about him turns out to be a lie.
For Jay it was perfect, too. But he shouldn't have let himself fall in love with Lisa, because now the people who destroyed his entire life five years ago are onto him and he must disappear again …
Christine Poulson was born and brought up in North Yorkshire, England. She is now a research fellow at the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies at Sheffield University and chair of the William Morris Society. She has written widely on 19th-century art and literature, and her most recent work of non-fiction was a book on Arthurian legend in British art from 1840 to 1920. She lives with her family in a water mill in Derbyshire, England.
INVISIBLE marks a change from Christine Poulson’s usual setting of Cambridge, and her hitherto main character, amateur sleuth (academic) Cassandra. I loved the premise of this novel – spending a weekend with a lover once a month, no commitment, no responsibility. But of course things go wrong, and what follows is a gripping story. Poulson’s established strengths are the ability to imbue her fiction with a sense of place, atmosphere, suspense and rising tension. They are all displayed in INVISIBLE, and in this novel, there are also serious themes and she very engaging minor characters. I loved the book.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! For me this book was perfect, the right amount of suspense, family problems and love. Some books are overly slushy but this wasn't. It was raw and gritty. Lisa didnt beat around the bush when it came to what she was feeling and Ricky was always on her mind no matter what happened. I totally understood Jay being secretive as I got to the end, he was protecting Lisa. This si the first book I have read by read by Christine Poulson and it was one of the best I have read in a while! Definite 5 stars and high recommendation.
An entertaining thriller. The book starts in the middle of things so the reader has to figure things out, just as the heroine, a middle-aged mother, will need to do. There is a nice mix of real life issues along with the suspense. My only quibble is I’m tired of heroines who trip at the wrong moment. Surely, there are other ways of creating suspense—or for the sake of variety, maybe the hero could trip once in awhile.
Invisible is a great thriller. I can't say too much more about the plot because the twists & turns are the whole point of reading a book that wrong foots the reader at every turn. Christine Poulson kept me reading by giving out just enough information to intrigue & puzzle so that I had to read just one more chapter. That's why, in the end, I just dropped everything else & read the last half of Invisible in one sitting.
Enjoyable book. Easy to read, well written. Plot ok, and quite pleased nobody was killed off in the end, which happens way to often to make for an easy way out. Would recommend.
