It is ideal for Sunday school use, since it includes suggested outlines and review questions for each chapter at the end of the book.

About the author

Jesse Lyman Hurlbut (1843–1930) was an American Methodist Episcopal clergyman. He was born in New York City, graduated at Wesleyan University in 1864, and held pastorates at Newark, Montclair, Paterson, Plainfield, Hoboken, Morristown, Orange, and Bloomfield, New Jersey After 1879 he was connected with the Sunday-school and tract work of his denomination. He was secretary of the Epworth League in 1889–1892 and for some time was associated with J. H. Vincent in the direction of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. From 1909 until his retirement in 1914 he was district superintendent of the Newark District.

Mi pastor que es de origen Estadounidense me prestó una copia de Historia de la Iglesia Cristiana de Jesse Lyman Hurlbut en inglés, la edición era de los 70′s y podías notarlo por la condición física del libro. Revisando rápidamente el contenido me di cuenta de que estaba bastante organizado en periodos y secciones bastante sencillos además de tener una guía al margen de cada página con títulos y fechas que facilitaban la lectura para una mejor comprensión.

Decidí buscar la edición en español ya que para mis fines era más práctica. Después de pasar los primeros capítulos me di cuenta que estaba redactada de manera bastante clara y sencilla, es un libro de 206 páginas así que no se puede esperar una explicación tan detallada o profunda de los periodos incluidos en el libro. La historia comienza con la iglesia apostólica y pasa por otros periodos como el de persecución, medieval, hasta llegar al periodo moderno donde describe diferentes grupos o denominaciones mas contemporáneos.

Después de haber leído Historia de la Iglesia Cristiana me di cuenta que muchas veces como cristianos desconocemos este tipo de información pensando que lo importante es el aquí y ahora de la iglesia y sin embargo ese pensamiento solo nos hace indiferentes ante esa historia que se sigue escribiendo, nos hace indiferentes a esos personajes que han sacrificado su vida a Dios transformando su entorno. Si eres cristiano (a) o si te interesa ver la institución de la iglesia desde una perspectiva histórica recomiendo ampliamente este libro.

Hasta la mitad, el libro va muy bien, explorando aspectos generales del cristianismo y dando una visión bastante clara de lo que fue la historia de la iglesia durante el primer milenio. Hace un buen trabajo en recoger la historia de la iglesia en la baja edad media y el periodo de laReforma. Sin embargo, al final tiende a enfocarse excesivamente en la historia del protestantismo en Estados Unidos y luego en el nacimiento y la expansión del pentecostalismo, presentando cifras que a todas luces hoy están desactualizadas. Sin embargo, este último punto puede llegar a ser valioso, como un registro histórico del tiempo en el que se escribió el libro.

An informative, brief, very general overview of church history that hits the main points. The best part about this book is its perspective and the amount of information it provides while being brief. The outline in the margins is helpful for quick reference.

The book is best for church history from the Apostolic Church to the Reformation era. The section for the Modern Church does not fully cover the 1648 - today time frame. It has more of a focus before the 19th century. The book was originally published in 1918. The mid 19th century and onward was probably too recent to provide much of an overview for. It appears that at a later time the book was added to.

The section on the Christian Churches in the United States is where the development of early denominations can be found.

This is a good book if you want the gist of church history without a lot of detail.

I'm finding that I'm faulting the book for what it has to be: a high level summary. It definitely connected a few dots, historically, but as a Catechumin in Eastern Orthodoxy, I was a little disappointed with the focus on the western church. The author all but acknowledges that he knows very little about the Eastern Church, but what little he says, then, ABOUT Eastern Orthodoxy feels highly suspect and inaccurate. His deliberate avoidance speaks volumes: an acknowledgement that he doesn't focus on TOTAL church history would be nice.

I tend to dislike books where the author tries to direct me to a specific conclusion. Allow me the freedom to think. Do not inform me of your impressions or the causation of a systemic breakdown. I enjoy drawing my own conclusions and coming up with a basis for such ideas. I may agree, but permit me the pleasure of doing so independent of the authors biases being woven into the narrative.
