Rate this book
Dear Author,
He offers such a pure, unfettered submission to the man strong enough to tame him; he’s the best thing that ever happened to this powerful (read: spoiled) Dom. Still… even the best of Doms aren’t infallible, and this one almost lost his beautiful boy. He straightened his head out quickly enough, but by then his boy wasn’t quite so forgiving. If his stubborn sub is so damn resistant to reason, drastic measures are called for… right? What choice does a desperate Dom have but to resort to a tiny bit of kidnapping, and a wee touch of restraint and, well… I’ll let the author decide what else it’ll take to get them to their HEA.

Photo Description:
Two men spoon together on a white mattress with blue swirls. One man (the Dom) wears nothing but black work boots as he shapes the other man. The Dom is caught kissing at the sub’s neck whilst the sub holds onto the Dom’s hand. The Dom looks fully sated; the sub, with eyes closed, shackles around his ankles, and a soft smile, looks fully claimed. Both look completely at ease. Tattoos circle the sub’s navel.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Jack blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive.

~2.5~

The reviews for this story are a mixed bag, and I can see why.

Pyke has a very specific writing style; her sentences are longish, her phrasing flowery.

I found much of the story to be tedious and hard to follow.

I liked some of the earlier scenes between Dan and Tom, but as the story progressed, the BDSM turned darker, and that's just not my cuppa.

The last two chapters were a complete WTF. Seriously, there are better ways to apologize!

I liked the image and prompt, which stated that a "HEA is a must." However, I'm not sure I would bill this as a HEA.

The MCs are a long-term established couple but don't live together, and the plot consists of them fighting (over a lost pencil) and making up. There is no real momentum to their relationship.

I am also all kinds of put out that Dan's kilt kink wasn't fulfilled.

Kinktastic stamp of approval!

Well defined characters and background in this one made the smexy times that much more entertaining. Really great weaving of the real world into the story made this less fantasy and more contemporary romance. Pyke has a tendency to create doms that do things that make we want to stab them and while there was certainly a WTF moment here, I could believe the resolution and it felt reasonable. Hell, it was pretty darn sexy. Smoldering hot play with all kinds of toys, including some fun electro-play. And great use of tattooing and piercing in this one--nice. *fans self*

Side note:

Favorite quote:
They’d been together for so long, home should have been Tom’s first stop, not his last.

WARNING: KILT TEASE

If you're not already aware I have a teeny tiny little thing for kilts and a certain reviewer led me to believe there would be kilts. Well, I cannae resist the lure of a kilt so in I went with gusto! What did I find? Kilt teasing!

Say what?!?!
description

I know, B, I know. Only maddening talk of kilts. No actual wearing of the kilt.

However, despite the lack of kilting I thoroughly enjoyed His.

Someone's pierced. Always a win in my book.
Someone's a skosh on the sadistic side. Another win there.

"Then I'll fuck you until you can't cry out my name."

They categorize it as dub-con. Do I agree?
description
Dub-con can have such a negative connotation. I prefer to think of this as aggressive persuasion tactics.

Kink is pretty high and fuckhot. Meow.

I thought the whole pencil thing was going somewhere weird. I think it might be trauma hangover from Don't…. No spoiling. Just saying. I was expecting some freaky kink as only Ms. Pyke can deliver.

Nevertheless, His kept my attention from the get go despite the lack of this:

This.

Or, hell, even this.

I'm not picky! Put a kilt on it!

That FIRST scene....OH MY GOSH!!!!!>

Well, I’m already giving it 4 stars just for that. End of discussion. Hehehehe

I REALLY REALLY enjoyed this one. Jack L. Pyke has a very special style of writing/telling a story. Something I can appreciate when I’m into the “grey” areas of life.

This was not “Dark” but it was not Black and White. What I liked about it, was even though it’s short, and the “drama” therefore feels a little “Why that reaction?” from Tom’s side, I still got the feel that the relationship goes much deeper than we get to really enjoy in the little time we have with them.

From the get go I could feel their connection. Something deeper. And that made me really get into the story. Maybe even into a better understanding of the “drama”. I think you kind of have to read between the lines in some places. It’s about more than what you originally think.

I love how they “know” each other. I LOVE Tom’s way of bringing it all together again! It’s so special!

Yes, his method of getting there is something else. But even that, I could appreciate and enjoy. These guys are into kink. Domination and submitting, without being pathetic. So I got what he did and I appreciated Dan not just giving in that easily.

I could really do with a full length version of this one.

Oh, and don’t get me started on that cover!

Well, shit. I was convinced that this writer had the potential to make me bookgasm, but I guess not. You'd think that I'd enjoy Pyke's writing style; happily rolling around in word porn is not above me. However, I didn't enjoy this letter soup of impressively flaunty and lengthy sentences resulting in a hard-to-follow plot about young men, older men, tattoos claiming bum cheeks, gorgeous holes without the offer of fine hair, the sound of zippers being unzipped drifting over, some fuckery and many manly "fucks" on the side and crazy meltdowns over pencils.

This is a MNY case all the way and my rating reflects my personal level of enjoyment (zero). So when in doubt, please make sure to check out the rave reviews as well.:) In general, I'm grateful that I got to discover that this isn't for me by sampling a short freebie instead of enthusiastically ordering the entire 'Don't...' series at once. This is why the M/M Romance Group event rocks.

Sadder and more melancholy than I usually prefer, but I couldn't put this story down. And I cried.

Beautiful story, except for the dub con/non con part which made me angry. And I was very uncomfortable with what followed; I needed some talking before that scene.

In typical Jack Pyke style, Jack takes the reader on a ride through an emotional relationship between a Dom and his sub during a bad time in their relationship. She has an imaginative way of these two making up.

Dark read that Jack L.Pyke is known for, so be forewarned before you venture into another dark story in Jack's imagination. It's always my greatest love and pleasure to consult with Jack on her books. Please be aware that I was also involved with this book but I gave it a five star rating because it deserved one and Jack is very capable of changing directions on me at the last minute and I may not know exactly what the end piece is going to be like. So, you can take my review with a grain of salt.

DNF because I had to read each paragraph 3 times to stitch together what the author was trying to say in those overly long/illogical sentences. Well... I tried.

This one is Jack Pyke's contribution to Love's Landscapes, the Goodreads M/M romance group event 2014 and it’s freaking awesome! It's a well done, intense BDSM short that intrigued me from the first page. Definitely one of the best short stories I’ve read from this genre.

It’s dark…

It’s sad…

It’s sexy as hell…

Tom, a tattoo artist and a Dom, is in a loving relationship with his sub Dan, who is a mental health nurse in a care home where Tom’s dad is a long term patient. They have been together for five years and are used to the the ups and downs of an established relationship. But then something unexpected happens and suddenly things seem to fall apart…

I loved the depth of the relationship and that BDSM is used as a tool of love, it’s much more than a kink in the guys sex life. You can feel the deep love and understanding between Tom and Dan, their relationship is beautiful and a pleasure to read. And... it's scorching hot!!!!
Overall, the story is thrilling with twists and turns and edge-of-your-seat stuff, a brilliant emotional journey.

Yes, there are some dub-con elements, which didn’t bother me at all… hey, it’s Jack L. Pyke we’re talking about.

Three last words? Just. Fucking. Peachy! :D

Jack L. Pyke's contribution to the M/M Romance Group's Love's Landscapes is dark, sad and sexy. She knows how to write the Dom who just can't get it quite right *coughs* Gray anyone *coughs* and Tom fits that mold all too well. As wrong as Tom gets it, he just cannot face the possibility of losing Dan after so many years together.

Heed the warning if dub-con is not your cup of tea. Otherwise enjoy.

See, the problem with perfection is that when it finally cracks, it's far more devastating than something that was openly flawed to begin with. Tom, for all intents and purposes, is the perfect, generous, loving Dom who takes the responsibility of caring for his sub very seriously. Don flourishes under the care of his Dom, lovingly offering his submission with a trust and openness that Tom appreciates -- even if he does possibly take it a bit for granted.

But something happens that's beyond Tom's control. And Tom keeps everything within his control, somehow even when that shouldn't be possible. So the combination of a deep emotional attachment and a loss that should have, in his mind, been within this realm of control, really throws him off balance and he lashes out at the only other constant in his life that he believes in. And Don takes it - the loving, trusting part of him understanding and wanting to help... and he might have taken much more if Tom had fought and railed and worked his shit out WITH Don. But he didn't. He withdrew and punished Don far more painfully than any whipping would have done.

While Tom isn't surprised - once he gets his head out of his ass - by Don's anger, he is struck rather dumb by the fact that a simple, "I'm sorry, baby," doesn't fix it. In fact, several "I'm sorry, baby,'s," doesn't work and it really starts to dawn on him that this goes beyond simple hurt feelings or a petty tantrum. He's damaged the very foundation of their relationship, and it's not so easily repaired. But he can't fix it, either, if Don won't stop being so stubborn and refusing to to listen.

It might be a hail Mary, desperate act of a desperate man, but Tom goes for broke and sets the stage for a seduction that could only work for a sadistic Dom and masochistic sub. But, as wrong and twisted as his methods may seem to the outside world, they're beautiful and full of love and need and hope to these two men. And, in the end, they happen to be perfect, flaws and all. :)

I guess I am getting lazy, but other people usually say it before me, so I am not going into lengthy explanations. Check out Loe's review. It's perfect.

I think I missed about a third of the story because I couldn't get through the sentences. Few times I was so lost, I had to skip paragraphs.

This one, for example. What does this even mean? (Unless it's my English, which is not my native.)

"After hanging up his tattoo machine for paint and airbrushes, it was always the same when he worked body art at different venues away from the tattoo studio."

And then another thing, the kidnapping. Another big WTF? Den didn't know, couldn't have known about the knife. He also had a gag on. Could he cry Monday? I don't think so. Tom fails as a Dom in this book on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin.

2 stars.

Well written story of Tom, a tattoo artist and Dom, and Dan, his sub who is also a mental health nurse who works in a care home where Tom's father is a long term patient. The pair have been together for five years, but after an altracation at Dan's work things start to fall apart as Tom misreads the situation.

I enjoyed the first part of the story, but I really didn't like the way Tom engineered the reconcillation with Dan, probably because it didn't feel like consential BDSM at that point but a kidnapping/abuse and I wanted Dan to safeword out of it.

My only other issue with the story was the head hopping between characters.

Great story with some smokin play scenes. I definitely would not allow my dick to be tattooed though. Dan and Tom have a solid D/s relationship on several levels from being lovers to a tenant, an employee and finally Dan caring for Tom's ailing father. Not a relationship with easily defined lines but it works until Tom, our drunken Dom screws up. I wanted to shove that pencil up his ass because neither man could remember what they were angry about. A little communication and things slide back into hot play.

First off, that cover. HOoooleeeeeee sheeeeeeit. *dies*
Second, this is my first book by Jack L. Pyke, but it will DEFINTELY not be my last.
Third, two words: Cock Tattoo
Fourth, the story...

Okay, see, I've been kinda bored lately with the BDSM titles I've picked to read. Maybe that's my fault since they've usually been challenge books, maybe it's the almost repetitive feel to the plot/action. Sometimes they're either NOT actually BDSM (lacking at least one - if not ALL - of the SSC tenets) or they're SO very SSC that the story reads like a How-To manual with it's detailed, step-by-step instruction. I don't know. What I DO know is that this book read completely different.

My favorite BDSM books have been the ones that turn an expected trope on it's head. An older Sub with a younger, inexperienced Dom. A Dom that likes to suck cock and bottom. No pain play, only control. That kind of thing. Here, we have some inventive scenes and sex-play that was all really quite an emotional ride as well as being erotic, and I loved that change. Seriously, I felt exhausted by the end of this story (and not just my wrist) because I was tense along with the characters. I felt their struggle.

PLUS, be still my heart, a Dom that isn't perfect. He's got his own issues and accidentally let it bleed all over their relationship. What makes this whole thing work is that he recognizes how he fucked up and tries to fix it. When is Sub's reticence and unwillingness to talk so they can reconcile becomes an issue, he takes things into his own hands and WOW, I never thought I would find that particular scenario as hot as I did. Goes to show what a good author can do...

Don't get me wrong: There are still safewords and injury inventories and welfare checks and whatnot. They're just worked into the story so well that it all feels like a natural part of their interaction...just like it should be. (I only noticed them because everything about this book felt so different that I MADE myself look for them.) That Dom still expects to be called Sir...and the Sub does because, despite that OMG delicious "torture" it's his CHOICE to do so. He can call it all off with one word. But he doesn't...

One thing I do wish is that we get a little more of a peek inside these characters heads as to what motivates them, why they like the games & control.

Yes, the warnings are true, this story contains some strong/dark BDSM. It doesn't start out that way, though. The first two thirds of this novella gave me time to get to know both Dan, the sub, and Tom, who is a rather controlling but extremely caring Dom. By the time catastrophe hits this very loving couple, and Tom loses control for very understandable reasons and only very briefly, I trusted the depth of their love enough to kind of see why Tom chose to act the way he did.

It made for some very intense moments as I followed their final scene of the story, glued to the pages and half-horrified what Tom had come up with and half-fascinated. It certainly made for some very hot reading - all with the understanding that Dan may have struggled, but that what Tom needed to do was send a very strong message. I wouldn't call the BDSM extreme, there is no slavery involved, no permanent harm done, and Dan, the sub, has every opportunity to use his safeword. Yet. he doesn't and that goes to show the depth of his trust despite all the crap Tom has put him through.

If you like emotionally intense stories about men who play hard, if you enjoy reading about a sub and his Dom in deep crisis and want to know how they manage to work their way through it, and if you're looking for a read that is as hot as their love is deep, then you will probably enjoy this free novella.

I thought that was such a tender love story. the dynamic between Dan and Tom was so perfectly established in the beginning that when the argument begins, and then carries on too far, Tom has to get creative to grab Dan's attention. Dan's love for Tom is clear throughout the story, and though he holds himself together, I was really wishing for Dan to have a good cry at some point. his love and complete trust for his Dom is what sees them through. Really lovely, wish there was more coming out about these two - Tom is an especially interesting character.

Really enjoyed this one from this year's LL event on GR. Quite a complicated tale, also featuring mental illness as a subject. 4 stars.

A non-fraternisation rule applies at the mental hospital where Tom's father Chris is residing, but Dan who is one of the nurses involved in caring for Chris, has formed a Dom/Sub relationship with Tom, and obviously even though they've been seeing each other for 5 nearly 6 years, things have to be kept under wraps.

After a particularly bad day with his father, Tom goes a little off the rails, and treats Dan appallingly. Understandably, Dan is pissed off with this treatment and rebels. As far as I'm concerned, Tom thoroughly deserved a little rebellion from his sub in view of his offhand and disrespectful attitude, but he was so frightened of losing Dan altogether that once he'd come to his senses, he couldn't stop apologising. Dan was SO angry with him that the 'let's kiss and make up overtures' were well and truly rebuffed...for a while at least hehe. [Yes, we Brummies CAN be rebellious!!]

Loved the significance of the links....read story to get meaning.

How fortunate was this the story requestor to have Jack L. Pyke to pick up the prompt?

This is an intense BDSM short that was very well done - one of the best I've read from this genre. You can tell while reading it that the act of BDSM is used as a tool of love in their relationship rather than a kink in their sex lives. The depth of their relationship was touching and I would be so happy for this to be expanded into a full length novel because I loved reading about these two characters. The conflict was handled very well as it wasn't about misunderstanding rather coping with hurt, which everyone has experienced.

I'm not necessarily a fan of established couples but this story was in such capable hands that I really grasped the deep well of love and understanding between the two MCs and it was such a breath of fresh air in this genre. Definately give this one a try. While the kink might not be everyone's cup of tea, the relationship between Dan and Tom was beautiful and a pleasure to read.

I love Jack's books, and now she has proven herself as an author that can write a short story that doesn't leave me wanting. Don't get me wrong, I would love a full size story about these two wonderful men, but this left me happy and with a smile on my face.
Jack writes wonderfully flawed Doms, and Tom was just perfect.
This is nice and steamy, a little dark, but to be expected with this author, and I adored that I was given such a well rounded story in so few pages.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

So, I have this fairly short list of authors who I absolutely love. Love their style and reading something from them is like a big relaxing sigh of content. Jack Pyke is at the top of that list. I can always count on my buttons being pushed, in good ways and bad, skating the edge of darkness. This tasty treat was a freebie from the MM Romance Group’s Love’s Landscapes event.

Of course, I wish this story was longer, but to be able to grab a picture and make a story out of nothing, making it your own, is always fun to watch regardless of how long it is. Here, we get little nibbles of everything Jack’s stories are known for and look forward to.

Tom and Dan have a bit of a taboo relationship to start with. Dan is the caretaker at the facility at which Tom’s father resides. Therefore, Tom’s dad is technically a patient of Dan’s. But, Tom and Dan have managed to maintain a relationship and keep it under wraps for about five years now. They also have a unique relationship in that Tom is the Dom to Dan’s sub.

Things happen, the guys’ relationship is tested, and there is quite a bit of action packed into this short story. Tom goes to some fairly drastic measures to set things right with Dan, but it doesn’t take long to see his intentions are good and that these two really need each other.

The sex scenes are smoking, the twists and turns edgy and exciting. This was just a glimpse at a time in Dan and Tom’s lives. I would love to see them again in a more drawn out story but quite enjoyed this one either way.
