Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Οι ερευνητές λένε ότι το παραμύθι αυτό ανήκει στον Χανς Κρίστιαν Άντερσεν και ίσως να αποτελεί την πρώτη του απόπειρα. Αν και είναι αρκετά απλοϊκό στο σύνολο του, προϊδεάζει ωστόσο τον αναγνώστη για τα όμορφα παραμύθια που θα ακολουθήσουν και θα μεγαλώσουν γενιές και γενιές.
Το σπαρματσέτο περικλείει ένα συναισθηματισμό, συμβατό με την ηλικία των 18 που γράφτηκε και που εμφανώς αντικαθίσταται στο πέρασμα του χρόνου από διαφορετική ματιά.

This one somehow does not leave a strong impression with me, but it does have a valuable message of how the world can tarnish and soil us, but having the right person [people] in our lives can renew us and bring out the best in us so that we are not ruined or defeated.

Just as the candle of Andersen's story is more than meets the eye, this short tale tackles deep philosophical questions of existence.
On the surface the story is about a candle that doesn't understand its true purpose until meeting the tinderbox, who lights the way for the candle to spread joy and happiness to others. Underneath, lays a labyrinth of complex philosophical questions. The candle's pondering echoes foundational question of humanity, "why and to what end (am I) created"? (1). With the aid of a friend, the tinderbox, the tallow candle can only answers these questions for itself, leaving the rest of us to continue our own pondering. Ultimately, The Tallow Candle is a somber story that offers a bright ending.

As a holistic physician this tale rings true with my practice experience, we must have hope for our patients when they feel all is lost! The deepest foundation of medicine is love. I found this by happenstance as I asked for a Tallow Candle at the hardware store and the young man said he had never heard of a Tallow Candle, so I Googled it and discovered this 2012 publication by HCA! Great connection!

It's an interesting perspective of abuse and depression. The world, false friends, real ones.
The confusing part for me was the sheep mom and melting pot dad.
But then, my mom pointed out that candles used to be made from sheep fat and they probably used a melting pot to heat and shape the fat. It actually made me laugh to realize I was being so straight forward in a fairy tale.

This is a short story, but a meaningful one. True friendship is at the heart of this story, along with this beautiful desire to help others. It’s amazing that Andersen could express so much with so few words.

I don't know why they say that this book is not as mature as Andersen's other works.. Maybe it's not as polished but it's so wholesome and inspiring.. A beautiful story :-)

Ένα άγνωστο πρωτόλειο παραμύθι του Χανς Κρίστιαν Άντερσεν, βρέθηκε σε ένα κουτί στα Εθνικά Αρχεία της Δανίας, κοντά στο σπίτι του μεγάλου παραμυθά.
Πρόκειται για μια σύντομη ιστορία («The Tallow candle») που αναφέρεται σε ένα «μοναχικό» κερί φτιαγμένο από ζωικό λίπος το οποίο μένει ρυπαρό και παραμελημένο, μέχρι να αναγνωριστεί και να αναφλεγεί η εσωτερική του ομορφιά.
Το χειρόγραφο, γραμμένο με μελάνι, έχει την εξής αφιέρωση: «Στην κυρία Μπάνκεφλοντ, από τον αφοσιωμένο της ΧΚ Άντερσεν».
Η κυρία Μπάνκεφλοντ λέγεται ότι ήταν μια χήρα, οικογενειακή φίλη, την οποία επισκέπτονταν ως παιδί ο Άντερσεν για να δανειστεί και να διαβάσει βιβλία. Το χειρόγραφο των 700 λέξεων έχει μπει στο μικροσκόπιο των ειδικών αφότου
ανακαλύφθηκε τον περασμένο Οκτώβριο από τον ιστορικό Esben Brage στα Εθνικά Αρχεία της Δανίας, στον πάτο κουτιού που ανήκει σε πλούσια οικογένεια από την ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα του Άντερσεν, το Οντένσε.
Η ημερομηνία συγγραφής τοποθετείται γύρω στο 1823, όταν ο Άντερσεν ήταν 18 ετών, λόγω του απλοϊκού στυλ γραφής που δεν συγκρίνεται όπως επισημαίνεται με τα μετέπειτα ώριμα έργα του και πιστεύεται ότι πρόκειται για αντίγραφο του πρωτότυπου χειρόγραφου που έχει χαθεί.
