In Wicked Path: Book Two of the Daath Chronicles brother and sister are forced to opposite sides of Tarrtainya on a fast-paced adventure where the wildlife isn’t the only thing trying to kill them.

Three months have passed since Avikar defeated the Reptilian Prince, and he still can’t remember his battle with Lucino. On the hunt for answers, he returns to the scene of the fight and discovers a strange connection between his family’s dagger and the mysterious kingdom of Daath, and it seems only his distant father can reveal the truth behind it all.

Before Avikar can travel back home, Lucy assaults him in the market and forces him to flee to Nod Mountains—a place few dare to enter, and even less return from. With Raven and her childhood friend by his side, they must survive the treacherous journey through the pass with a vengeful Lucy hunting them. If they don’t, they’ll never see home again.

Jeslyn’s new life in Luna Harbor is the perfect remedy for her confused and broken heart. But when a group of mercenaries kidnap her beloved Grandfather, interrupting her daily routine as his jewelry apprentice, she's forced to join forces with the one person from her past she tried to forget.

And his assistance comes with a price.

His memory of the battle with the Reptilian Prince is still held captive within his healing mind and body, yet Avikar had defeated Lucino. When he returns to the battle scene Avikar discovers a connection between his family’s priceless dagger the kingdom of Daath and only one man may know the answers. Answers that Avikar must have and as his journey begins, Lucy appears, assaulting him and forcing him to flee to a land where few dare to go. At his side, under his protection are Raven and her friend.

Meanwhile, far away, Jeslyn has become a jeweler’s apprentice as her heart heals from her losses. Bur mercenaries will destroy her new life by kidnapping her grandfather forcing the last man she needs to see back into her life. While her brother is far off facing his own danger, Jeslyn must decide, should she accept the price of help or attempt to go alone? Torn between her feelings for Lucino and the horrors of what he did to her brother, how can she trust her heart to know its true feelings?

Eliza Tilton’s Wicked Path finds us back in the lives of young Jeslyn and Avikar where they are targets for death and more from the Reptilians.

Still a fast-paced tale, still told with the attention to detail that shows the connection this author feels to her story, still mesmerizing for readers! Will the Reptilians continue their attempt to take over the world? Are humans still targeted for death or enslavement? How can Lucino say he is in love with a human and still destroy her world? Is it his human half weakening his resolve? How can two pairs of brothers and sisters feel such polar opposite feelings?

So many lives are on the line, so much anger, so many tortured emotions and no one answer will rest the haunting whispers from within. Take the journey with Eliza Tilton and know you have truly left reality for another dimension.

I'm not always the biggest fan of fantasy, but I am a big fan of writer Eliza Tilton. This second installment in the Daath Chronicles series offered a lot of wonderful surprises as brother and sister Jeslyn and Avikar continue to cross paths with sinister brother and sister Lucy and Lucino.

A multiple point of view works great in a story like this, in which different characters are on different paths, even in different realms and worlds. We get all four characters' viewpoints in this story. Lucy's on a mission for her father the king, who needs to save some of his people from danger. Avikar is still in Daath. And Lucino is searching for Jeslyn.

There's a lot of conflict between characters, some great world building that fills in more details about this story world, and some very interesting developments, both plot-wise and relationship-wise. There are new alliances and relationships -- and a bird!

Fans of YA fantasy should definitely check out this series -- things are really getting interesting!

Wicked Path being the sequel to Dark Forest, I was prepared for the lots of first person POVs that shocked me earlier. Also, I was hoping that Jeslyn would finally stop being so terribly naive.

The story continues (mostly) with the same characters, and their goals are also mainly the same, although Avikar is no longer saving his sister (and in this book he seemed far less troubled with the death of his little brother).

There is more action and magic, and overall I liked the story better. Although, now I think of it, some of it doesn't make that much sense. Jeslyn takes some more action of her own, but in the end is still utterly helpless and easily influenced. If you're looking for a strong female lead, keep looking.

However, I find these nice snackbooks (easy, fast, no need to think to much books) so I just hope Jeslyn will learn from her mistakes in the next book.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This was another series where I read the first book and then jumped at the chance when I was offered the opportunity to read the second.

I really didn't want to like Lucino in this book, but I found myself growing more and more intrigued by him as the book went on. I liked him and Jeslyn together and I found it easy to get behind their gradually growing relationship.

I'm still not a fan of the multi first-person POVs. I did get somewhat confused with who was narrating at times. I do think I would have found it much easier to read if the whole book had been in third person.

I did find most of the characters to be well-written and well-rounded, even though I really didn't like the love triangle there was. I was also really intrigued by Lucy's character. I would have liked to see a bit more of her... and get some glimpses into her motivations, similar to how Lucino's thoughts and mechanisms were shown.

I liked the fact that there was a bit more detail in this book, both about the human world and about the world Lucino came from. I did lose a lot of sympathy towards his people, though, considering what they planned for the humans.

I really liked Haddo in this book and I would have liked to see more of her kind and how she was there. It was also interesting to see more of the Order, particularly given that they clearly had a bad reputation in the previous book. I don't really understand much of their motivations, though, and there was really only one member of the Order that I really liked.

I did find this book a really entertaining, easy, quick read. The characters were engaging and interesting and I liked learning about the world. I would definitely be interested in reading the third book in this series at some point in the future, when it comes out. I think you do need to read the first book to understand what's happening in this one... but I do recommend this as a good, well-written young adult fantasy series.

Wicked Path: Book Two of the Daath Chronicles should come with a “buyer beware” label attached to the cover - because this story is highly addictive. Once started, I could not put it down.

Having not read the other book in the series, I was a little lost to begin with. Thankfully, by the time all the protagonists had been introduced, I soon caught up with the story and was ready to read on....what an adventure awaited me. Tilton writes from various points of view. This did not slow the story down in any way. Not once did I find myself wanting to get back to a favourite character’s POV -- I was happy to read about all of them. There was nothing about this story that wasn’t engaging.

Tilton has created a very vivid fantasy world that runs along side the human one. The creatures were believable, as was the landscape. It was very easy to visualise.

I really enjoyed reading the romance and, without giving away the plot, there is one very poignant moment on a beach which I think demonstrates the power of love so beautifully, and with so much grace, that the scene will stay with me for a very long time. Love is love – no matter what world you come from.

I have gained a new favourite author and I will definitely be purchasing the first book in the series.

**May Contain Spoilers**

I received this free copy from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.

So three months have passed now since Lucino was defeated by Avikar. Derrick and Jeslyn returned home while Avikar stayed behind in Daath with his new love Raven. But that wasn’t the only reason, as he stayed to try to remember battling the Reptilian Prince.
I didn’t connect as well with Avikar in the last book but he seemed a little more focused this book. He has lost some of his self-imposed guilt, having been able to rescue his sister as was planned.

I was shocked to find that Jeslyn had not married Derrick and had left home again. She moved to live with her grandfather in Luna Harbour and was learning to make jewelry, and trying to forget the boy/reptilian shape-shifter.

Lucy makes her presence known as well, to Avikar and Raven. Avikar decides it’s time to leave but Raven’s childhood best friend, aptly nicknamed “Blond Boy” (yeah this is because I can’t remember the guy’s name, it works! Ha ha!) encouraged Raven and Avikar to follow him up into the Mountains.
I enjoyed this part of the journey because I’m an avid Guild Wars 2 player, and damn ice spiders!

I loved this continuation of the Daath Chronicles. After reading Broken Forest, this one just naturally follows a few months later. Lucucino isn't dead as Avikar believes. He is very much alive and in his home world. There he plots and plans on how to get Jeslyn back. I like how he is confused about his feelings for her and if he really can follow through with his plan.

Avikar and his friends have a different saga all together. He and Raven are having to outrun Lucy and her spells. I liked watching their relationship grow, and even if he was annoying to Avikar, I liked Cael. He was a good guy, just in love with a girl he couldn't have. I enjoyed switching between storylines. It was great to follow each of them and see how different each of the stories are but happening at the same time!

It was a 4/5 for me. I'm off to read the next book now :)

Book 2 in the Daath Chronicles

An enchanted hidden kingdom. Magical creatures. Shifters. Family loyalties. Jealousy. Wit and humor. Lies. Deception. Rebellion. Sacrifice. Love.

This sci-fi fantasy book is written in multiple POV's. The adventure continues across different worlds with different species. Avikar and Jeslyn find themselves yet again in danger and at times allied with the enemy. Eliza does a great job with character development and growth, as well as providing intricate world-building. Excited to read book 2.5.

Very different worlds

Slow start but picks up with twists and slow burn romance. Lucino and Jesyln have rocky history, but are forced to work together. They even pick up an unusual companion.

Since I received the novella, Deadly Dance, in exchange for a review, I will be focusing this review on that book rather than the whole series. I will, obviously, touch briefly on the first two books as well.

Moving along: the first book started off a little slow – I actually considered putting it down because it was going so slowly and I was also busy with some other books. However, I’m glad I actually finished all three books to the point that I’m looking forward to the final book in the series. Personally, I found the second book, Wicked Path, much better than the first book and the novella mainly because the characters have developed by then and the plot becomes a little clearer.

There are many main characters in this series with multiple POVs specifically: Avikar, Jeslyn, Lucino, and finally Derrick in the novella. To be perfectly honest, I did not find Avikar to be that great. He was supposed to be this brother, Jeslyn’s brother, who went out to find his kidnapped sister and save her from the clutches of an evil king, Lucino. However, to me he was a tad wimpy and confused. He was also immensely jealous during the second book with Raven’s childhood friend. There were just so many negative traits about him that I did not care for.

Jeslyn, the kidnapped girl, was also not what I had expected; however, she certainly did grow in the second book. She went from a young, immature female in the first book and once learning more about reality and life, she became more realistic and mature in the second book. I definitely found her more likable.

Lucino was a surprising twist. I went in expecting to dislike him and I did, in the first half of the book. However, towards the second half and definitely by the second book, I actually realized that I enjoyed his character. It was obvious how much he had changed from the cold, unfeeling prince to someone who actually learned how to have emotions and ultimately, feel love.

In the novella, it mostly focused on Derrick and Lucy but the book was written in Derrick’s POV. He was originally a secondary character in the first book with no mention in the second book so I was surprised to see him show up in the novella. Perhaps he will become more important in the third and final book. The same goes for Lucy. She was possibly a bit more important than Derrick in the series because she made a few appearances in the second book but, to be perfectly honest, she didn’t seem that important either.

To me, the novella seemed odd. It didn’t really follow the main plot and instead, followed two secondary characters on a path that seems out of the blue. From my experience, novellas either play a part in between the actual books or they go into detail about an incident that was described in the one of the main books. The latter seems pretty much out of the question for now since it occurs after the second book in the series so I’m banking on the first theory. Either Derrick and Lucy will become more important in the final novel or this novella was a waste for both time and effort. That being said, I do hope that Derrick and Lucy will end up together. That will be perfect for Lucy who made her opinions on humans quite clear.

Overall, I enjoyed the series. I’m actually looking forward to the final book mainly because I want to see the relationship between three couples develop (!!) and also because I just want to find out the end result. Also, I want to note that the Reptilian species was actually not what I had expected. I was definitely expecting some sort of lizard man with a tail and everything but in the second book and in the novella, Lucino and Lucy actually transforms into their other look and they actually sound quite pretty.

Following on from broken forest, we continue with the adventures of Avikar, his sister Jeslyn and against all odds, Lucino.

Jeslyn has gone to stay with her grandfather next to the sea and fills her days searching for shells and making goods to sell, however, she can’t let go of the necklace given to her by Lucino, which she continues to wear secretly. Avikar prepares to take a treacherous journey with Raven and her old friend Cael, across the mountains, bringing him face to face with creatures he could never have imagined all whilst being chased by the vengeful Lucy.

Lucino pines for Jeslyn whilst back home in Mirth and sets about defying his family to see her, the necklace she covets becoming a beacon for Lucino. Can she forgive him or learn to accept him for his true self?

A kidnapping leads Jeslyn to embark on just as treacherous a journey as Avikar’s, and whilst both strive to reach their goal the threat of an oncoming war shakes them to the core.

This is a story which is very much a prelude to bigger things to come, although there are set pieces throughout, there is a lot going on to set things up as the story continues. It’s by no means a dull read, plenty of information to take in and friendships and bonds are forged. Lucino and Jeslyn’s tale continues to captivate, and I have to say that although Avikar’s journey is clearly crucial, I found myself wanting to get back to the chapters between Lucino and Jeslyn. I love that Jeslyn is becoming a force to be reckoned with and Lucino continues to be the antihero you just can’t help but love

That saying, there is clearly something about Avikar and his family which is special, their heritage in this regard is silent but all roads point to something greater in my view

Another great read and intriguing follow up to Broken Forest.

The Ties Of Affection

Avikar needs to leave Daath but he can't leave Raven! First of all he loves her... And second he promised to never leave her again. Unfortunately the return of her childhood friend Cael has complicated matters. Will he be able to convince her to leave with him? Is he going to lose her to Cael? What deep dark secret from her past is causing her so much pain? Will anyone at home believe the truth about Luciano and his true nature? Can they stop the invasion?

Jeslyn is torn between what she feels for Luciano and what he did to her brother. The way he was with her was completely different. Living with her grandfather and becoming his apprentice at the jewelry store has given her a bit of peace. She misses her family but the memories at home are too much to deal with. Which was the real Luciano? Are her instincts completely flawed? Does she really love him? Did he truly care for her or was he just using her? What was her purpose in his schemes?

Luciano is driven to reclaim Jeslyn no matter the cost!. Conflicted between his need for power and his feelings for her makes obtaining her a true obsession. Being half human and half Reptilian has its an special torments. Are his emotions truly a weakness? Or a hidden strength? Can he win Jeslyn back to his side? Or will he have to reacquire her through force? Can he slip his guards and get back to Daath? Will the Reptilians be able to take over the human world before their planet dies and exterminates their species?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy a bit of SciFi and aliens in their fantasy action adventures with plenty of intrigue, mystery, suspense and romance :)

You often have high expectations and low ones at that as well, when you jump into a series and then know you are missing a #1 of a series. I had the same goinginto Eliza Tilton's novel Wicked Path, yes, the #2 of the Daath Chronicles (NOT Death, Daath!). :) However, I reminisced about the television series "V" when I recognized a civilization of reptilian society - and yet...

There were so many chances for Tilton to go crazy with the descriptions and emotions of characters and she does not. She is able to rein in what we expect to visualize and then reins in on giving us details that let the reader imagine on their own, while letting the plot unfold and involve you - which is GREAT WRITING. The plot is definitely fantastical, however, not so much that the plot runs away from you, AND being able to be a part of the current plot says much about her ability as an author. Having won this in the YA Scavenger Hunt, I always approach novels with the 50/50 expectation, and always approach them with a higher expectation than I should, but in this case was rewarded.

The characters appeal to basic human emotions you or I would embody, and nothing is so fantastical that it is unbelievable. The magic, characters, plot, settings, and descriptions work, and I find elements of Star Wars, The Hobbit, and many other adventures combined, without embodying one specific tale and ruining the ability for this series to reach out. Pleasantly surprised is an understatement and allows this to continue to be worth picking up, going back and catching the first one, and advancing to the next!

Wicked Path, by Eliza Tilton made for an excellent second trip to the world of Tarrtainya. Brother and sister Avikar and Jeslyn are once more split up, each trying to come to terms with the events of the first book, each running into one spot of danger after another.

The story progresses nicely with great action and just the right amount of hints to understanding the big picture, but enough left to learn to leave you determined to read the third book when it’s available.

The scenes are vivid and detailed. Eliza does a great job showing the richness of this world and the race planning to invade and destroy or enslave humans. Luckily there are a few chinks, and both Avikar and Jeslyn have a chance to save everything.

The cover of Wicked Path is fabulous – it caught my breath each time I opened it on my Kindle.

I highly recommend Broken Forest and Wicked Path. I give Wicked Path 4/5 stars. My only nits are a bit of passive voice and some weak or unnecessary words, just stuff I notice as someone who loves editing!

Recommended purchase - and don't forget book 1 - Broken Forest if you need to catch up.
