A sweet and spicy, second chance romance is the story of Max and Stella. They were together in their late teens, broke up due to stuff we learn later and fate brings them together in the Love Hotel.
It’s a cute book. I liked the pace, the way they got to know each other again day after day and how Stella reacted towards the end. I would have liked a sign of angst before the end but overall I enjoyed it and had a nice time, with the Spanish scenery and all the songs mentioned. I wish the rating system had 0.5 stars because 3 isn’t doing it justice but 4 seems too much for a book that I probably won’t re-read and whose characters, despite being lovable, won’t be remembered after a while.

-Dual 1st person POV
-Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5

Overall: 3.5/5 ⭐️

Thank you NetGalley & Boldwood Books for providing this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I have read a few books lately where the initial cue meet for the two characters were enemies-to-lovers and some have felt forced. But these two, Max and Stella, everything worked. Miscommunication and silence led them to where they are now. On a love island, not like the TV show *shudder* but a paradise. From the second they meet up, you can feel the sexual tension, the sizzle despite their dislike for each other. But this book had a different feel to it, one I adored. Both are down-to-earth, flawed and just so loveable. They are people you know, love and respect. They could even be you, with their behaviour. None of this book felt forced, faked or unbelievable.

But one thing I have to comment on is that phone call at the end!!! Please tell me there will be more! I mean it seems crazy to include it. I kept looking at the timer on the audiobook, and it had 2 minutes left, there was no time for a resolution and now it's floating in the ether - WHAT CAN THIS MEAN!?!

I blitzed this audiobook in one day, yes that's right one day! I forgot that I was listening sometimes, more like I was watching, or a part of it....well maybe not for all the scenes - damn that sizzle! I have never read anything by Olivia before but Blimey, she knows just what you want without you even knowing you want or need it - I LOVED IT!! give me more!!!!

One of my favourite romance books this year!

I adored this book! The characters were so well-written, and I completely fell in love with them. The concept of the love hotel was so unique and made the story even more fun. It was such an easy, engaging read—I picked it up and couldn’t put it down until I finished it that same night. This author is now on my must-read list, and I can’t wait to get my hands on more of their books. This one has definitely earned a spot among my favorites!

Max & Stella are British 🇬🇧 made it even better 🤭

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for sending me this book! I loved the plot of this book, it reminded me of Love Island in a way (which I have never watched🫣) but I was so engaged. I loved how the MC’s were from England as not many books are set in the UK. This book has given me new songs to add to my own playlist which I always love! I highly recommend this book to everyone as it was a concept I have never read about.

(I received an e-arc from netgalley and am voluntarily leaving this review)
This was soooo good.
It was such a fun vibe.
If you like Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, you’ll probably like this too.
It had similar vibes even though the story was really different.
I would have given this book a higher rating but i felt like it got a little overpowered by the sexual explicit scenes. (Which i personally don't like)
If i remove all of that, it was such a solid read and again a FUN read.

Tropes:
● Second chance
● One hotel
● One room
● Fun adventure scenes
● "i never stopped loving you"

One of the best arcs i have read.

I absolutely love this authors books and when she releases a new book I just have to read it but know i am going to love it and this was definitely no exception - it was wonderful and everything that i wanted from a rom com story…

Right from the very beginning i was pulled in to this story and it had me hooked, i just wanted to keep reading so that i could find out what was going to happen between Stella and Max.

I loved that this book is mostly set in Spain as the author always has a wonderful way with words and describing all of the places and surroundings. I honestly feel as though i am there experiencing all of these wonderful things.

There were some very funny moments in this book and i found myself chuckling along in quite a few places.

I really warmed to both Stella and Max and thought they were both wonderful, well-rounded characters and they suited each other perfectly, the banter that went on between them was hilarious, i loved it. There were also quite a few side characters who i enjoyed getting to know and Stella’s mum was adorable and very funny too.

I also really enjoyed that there was a playlist within the story and now i am going to put a playlist together on Spotify so that i can play it and think about the story too, i do love a book with a playlist…

This was definitely an enemies to lovers trope and i loved it and all the will they won’t they added to all the angst between Stella and Max too.

After i had read this book I desperately wanted to find out what was going on between Jasmine and Alejandro, there’s definitely more to the story there and its been left on a bit of a cliffhanger and i need more!!!

This was such a sweet, romantic, spicy, funny, heartwarming story and perfect for a bit of armchair travel…..

🇺🇸 Oh wow, this was such a disappointment. The One That Got Away had all the elements of a story I thought I’d enjoy, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations at all.

The plot felt lackluster, and I struggled to connect with the characters or their journey. The setting, which could have added depth, felt flat, and the writing just didn’t draw me in as I’d hoped.

It’s always a shame when a book doesn’t resonate, and despite giving it a fair shot, this one left me feeling underwhelmed.

——————————————————

I was so excited to read this book as the blurb sounds sooooo good but this was a tough one for me to get through. Def didn't meet my expectations.
I was struggling with the characters, to me they were winy, annoying and not enjoyable. There was no connection. The whole thing felt forced and I just didn't enjoy it.
Dual POV by Max and Stella, which I was hoping to make the story better but it was ok, I guess much better than just one POV.
I am happy to have had the opportunity to read this book, even though it was not my cup of tea.

Please do not take my review as a reason not to read this book, just because one person cant get into a book or enjoy the characters doesn't mean all will feel that way. If the blurb sounds good to you, go for it and read the book. :)

This was an E-ARC.

Honestly, I DNF'd this one at 34%. I'm not sure why I couldn't get into it. I liked the idea of the plot. Not to mention, it has some of my favorite tropes, such as enemies to lovers and forced proximity. Not to mention, I'm also a sucker for second chances (as long as it's deserved).

That being said, it just didn't hit right with me. The dialogue felt weird and forced in some situations. Plus, I felt like there was an excessive amount of explanation points.

Part of me wonders if some of the issues are that the characters are from Loudon and I'm not good with the lingo. Most of my experience with books where the characters are from that area tends to be period pieces.

I didn't hate it, but I also wasn't invested. I still don't know how their relationship originally ended, and I'm not bothered by it.

Reading about Stella and Max’s time at The Love Hotel felt like watching a game show. The novel was fast paced and filled with multiple different tropes. Made it too good to put down!! During the epilogue we were left with a Jasmine cliff hanger 👀 does this mean book #2.

I dove into this book blind, drawn by the cover and title, expecting a lighthearted second-chance romance. What I got was a delightful surprise - a spicy, engaging story that exceeded expectations.

Stella and Max, both bullied into visiting the Love Hotel, embark on a journey of self-discovery and love. Their relatable struggles and witty banter made me invested in their stories. I rooted for both equally, eager to see them overcome past heartaches.

This romcom had me laughing out loud and cringing in embarrassment for the characters. The author's writing is effortless, making the absurdity of situations feel authentic. Beyond the humor, the story delivers heartwarming moments and swoon-worthy scenes. The perfect blend of spice, romance, and comedy makes this book a must-read for fans of the genre.

If you're looking for a lighthearted, engaging romance with a dash of spice, this book is for you. With its relatable characters, witty dialogue, and heartfelt moments, it's a true page-turner.

I look forward to reading all Olivia’s future novels and highly recommend to all spicy romance loving friends.

Olivia Spring's latest romantic comedy, The One That Got Away, is a delightful escape into the world of second chances and rekindled romance.

Stella, finds herself back home after a series of disastrous dates. Just when she thinks things can't get worse, her mother signs her up for The Love Hotel, a luxury matchmaking service. Reluctantly, Stella agrees to give it a shot, only to discover her match is none other than Max, her childhood sweetheart who once broke her heart. What follows is a heartwarming and hilarious journey in the scorching Spanish sunshine, where old sparks reignite and Max and Stella must decide if the one who got away is truly the one for them.

The chemistry between Stella and Max is palpable and electric. Their banter and shared history add depth to their relationship, making their journey all the more engaging. There were so many embarrassing moments that I couldn't help but laugh and at the same time feel bad for them.

The luxurious and picturesque setting of The Love Hotel in Spain adds a dreamy backdrop to the story, making it a perfect escape read. I loved the secondary characters, they made it more fun. Olivia Spring's signature humor shines through, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that balance the emotional beats of the story.

If you're a fan of second-chance romances with a healthy dose of humor and heart, The One That Got Away is a must-read.

Grab your copy and get ready to be swept away by Stella and Max's enchanting love story!

Happy publishing day! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC read in lieu of my review.

The One That Got Away is a steamy-second chance romance that will hook you until the very end. What would happen if you showed up to The Love Hotel: a luxury matchmaking service for your perfect match is guaranteed, only to find your perfect match is your ex? Stella had just about given up on love until her mom convinced her to take the holiday. Max, who has prioritized his business over love was sent away from his best friend/colleague to take a break from the grind and find love. When the pair end up at the same dinner table their rocky ending is brought back full circle and will be put to the ultimate test. No refunds at The Love Hotel, but will there be love in the end?

Super cute second chance romance with entertaining MCs and a steamy holiday away! Such a quick and fun read, definitely recommend!

Tropes: second chance, matchmaker

Nestled in the heart of Spain is the Love Hotel where men and women can book a two week stay where luxury matchmakers will help them find ✨the one✨
Max, former footballer turned CFO of a beauty products company signs up at the insistence of his best friend, Colton. Unbeknownst to him, Stella, who Max dated 12 years ago is gifted a trip by her mom who wants her to break out of her funk and get laid, and they are matched together. Will they work through the past and fall in love again?

The One That Got Away is a really cute book with a unique storyline that I enjoyed! I wish it was still summer because this would’ve been a great read for lounging on the beach. The chemistry between the two MCs was perfect. Definitely recommend.

3.75 stars. The One That Got Away is an enjoyable read for fans of Elena Armas or Lindsay Kelk. Stella and Max are chosen as the other' perfect match at a resort that helps people find their soulmate. However, Max broke Stella's heart years ago, and she is not sure if she can trust him again. This is such a cute concept for a book. I liked both Stella and Max. The reasons for their separation were clear and not unreasonable. They discussed things like adults, and their relationship grew realistically. There was a fair bit of spice. The descriptions of the resort were very lush and gave White Lotus level luxury vibes. I liked that they bonded over Ted Lasso and supporting each other to push their comfort zones, not rushing the other to make leaps they didn't ask for and weren't ready for. This book was a quick read with likable characters. It was nice to see an interracial couple in romance. Also, amazing, quirky, and specific side characters from Stella's mom to their love consultant, Jasmine. I'm not sure that the epilogue was needed unless it was just to set up a sequel with Jasmine?

Would you trust someone else to find your love match?
This love service does exactly that, but it’s more than that. You sign up not knowing if you’ll ever get called and, if you do, you have to drop everything to go on a 2 week trip to a villa to meet the one that they’ve paired you with.

This book was great. I loved the banter, the swoon worthy moments, the spice, the times I wanted to just yell at the characters for being dumb, all of it.

A sexy second chance, dual POV, vacation romance that had a fresh premise where single people could sign up for a holiday wherein they get matched with a potential love interest and are forced to spend time together in a Spanish paradise to see if they might have real world potential. This was fresh, funny and steamy featuring two bipoc main characters by a new to me author. Worth a read or listen if you want something light-hearted and fun!

I love Olivia Springs. Her writing is so amazing. She truly knows how to set up a scene and give you all the important pieces. The One that Got Away is a prime example of this. This book was very well written and really showed her versatility in writing characters with differences. I loved it soooo much!!!

I just want to say that the “Love Alchemist” is so funny and cool. I thought this was the coolest name for Jasmine’s role.

Max and Stella where a match made in heaven. I found myself loving every moment of their story. I think the idea of a love hotel is so cute, and I really appreciated all the things that they had to go through during their visit. I think the cutest moment was when they were going on their hiking trip and he held her hand because he knew she was afraid of heights. That moment made me cry so hard. The funniest moment was when they went to their massages and I’m not gonna spoil it but it’s just so funny how that turned out. I think overall what I really appreciate it about this book was the different things that showed up. There was some grief and some loss on both ends. There was also some uncertainty about Love but I really loved how Olivia showcase how both characters deserved love from each other.

Max is a great book boyfriend. He really did know Stella, and I felt like his character really grew. I’m sad that he felt like he had to break her heart to uphold his family. He pigeon hold himself into being a person that he didn’t want to be, but when Stella was in his life or around him, he was the person that should have been. And I just felt like his character development was really great. Stella was also just adorable. Her internal monologues really had me laughing so hard, because I knew that this girl was not going to be able to give up Max. By the end of the book all you want to do and continue to see them progress. Even though it takes them a second to fully get everything going, by the end of the book you are not disappointed. Also shout out to her mother lol she’s probably the funniest person next to her friend Sammie.

Something that really tugged at my head was when Max was scared of watching Football again and Stella went through lengths and stages to help him feel comfortable. I bawled like a baby. It was so heartwarming. I love books that showcase how with time, we all can heal.

The plot was amazing and the spice was just right! I really want to see Jasmine find love as well !!!

Thank you, Olivia for allowing me to read this book. I have loved your work so much and also thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to review this

As always, my reviews contain spoilers, don't read further if you don't want me to spoil the plot for you.

H dumped h a decade back, forgot about her and moved on as usual, the book starts with him signing up for a match making thingy and they end up matching him with his ex. Ofc after seeing her he's all sad and sorry and wants to apologise badly cause he screwed up. dude had 10 years to do this but noooo

she wants to leave the hotel after finding out it's him but is forced to stay by the hotel folks and him to do the entire match date activities with her ex

how he dumped her? during an interview on national tv

You’re a handsome young man,’ she’d said. ‘You must have lots of women throwing themselves at you.’
‘He’s got no time for women,’ his dad had jumped in.
‘Rumour has it that you have a girlfriend back in London?’
At that point, my heart had bloomed. I was that girlfriend and Max was about to tell the world about us.
‘That’s all over now,’ his dad had said.
‘Good news, ladies!’ the presenter had grinned. ‘Max Moore is single!’
I’d slumped on the sofa, but then I’d told myself it was fine. Any minute now Max would tell his dad and the presenter that wasn’t true because he was in a happy relationship.
Except he didn’t.
‘I’m committed to football,’ Max had said instead. ‘That’s my focus. I’m determined to be an important member of the Manchester Athletic team.’
And just like that, my whole world crumbled.

I’d cried for hours. When I tried to call Max, he didn’t answer. So I got the train to Manchester. I had to see him. I needed an explanation.
Max’s dad had opened the door and told me Max didn’t want to see me. But I’d insisted. I wasn’t leaving until I’d spoken to him.
When Max finally appeared, he couldn’t look me in the eye.
‘I’m sorry,’ he’d said. ‘I’m finding it difficult to manage everything. I think it’s better if we… break up.’
Even though I’d already seen him dump me on TV, I still refused to believe it.
‘Where’s this coming from?’ I’d pleaded. ‘Is it your dad?’ He’d never liked me, even before Max got signed.
‘It’s for the best,’ he’d said. His gaze was still fixed to the floor. ‘Please. Don’t make this more difficult than it already is. There’s too much riding on this, Stella. I have to make this work. I have to focus. I’m sorry.’
I ran out of there, crying. Hoping Max would follow. But he didn’t

I really was hoping she'd stay strong and make him grovel and work hard for the second chance but she gives in so easily. He saves her from a bikini top malfunction, takes care of her when she's drunk like any decent human being and boom all is forgotten and forgiven, they bang and its hea 🙉

The One Who Got Away by Olivia Spring is a captivating and heartwarming tale that explores the complexities of love, loss, and second chances. The story follows the journey of Emma, a successful career woman who seems to have it all—except the one thing she truly desires: a lasting, meaningful relationship. When fate unexpectedly reunites her with James, the charming ex-boyfriend she never quite got over, Emma is forced to confront her past and reconsider the choices she’s made.

Olivia Spring does a brilliant job of weaving together humor, emotion, and romance in a way that feels both authentic and engaging. The characters are well-developed and relatable, with Emma’s internal struggles and James’ mix of confidence and vulnerability adding depth to their dynamic. As the story unfolds, readers are taken on an emotional rollercoaster filled with moments of joy, regret, and hope.

One of the standout aspects of this book is the way Spring handles the theme of "the one who got away." It’s a concept that resonates with many, and she explores it with nuance, allowing the reader to reflect on their own experiences with love and missed opportunities. The chemistry between Emma and James is palpable, and their journey towards potential reconciliation is both believable and satisfying.

Overall, The One Who Got Away is a delightful read that will appeal to fans of contemporary romance. Olivia Spring has delivered a story that is as much about self-discovery as it is about rekindled love, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-told romantic tale with a touch of realism. This book is a testament to the idea that sometimes, the person who got away might just be the one worth fighting for.

The One That Got Away by Olivia Spring

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

What if the one who got away is really the one?

When Stella finds herself back home with a string of disastrous dates under her belt, she's certain she’s hit rock bottom. Until she discovers her mother has signed her up to The Love Hotel: a luxury matchmaking service where a perfect love match is guaranteed! Stella is adamant she'll have nothing to do with this nonsense! But then a match is found faster than she can say 'Not.A.Chance!' So, how bad can two weeks in the scorching Spanish sunshine be?

Very bad, actually. Because when Stella arrives, she’s mortified to learn her date is no perfect stranger. In fact she knows him a little too well. Because Max is the childhood sweetheart who broke her heart, who her heart remembers and who is more gorgeous than ever.

With no refunds, Stella reluctantly decides to stay and enjoy the holiday - all she has to do is keep Max at an arm’s length...right? Easier said than done when Max is impossible to ignore. And as the Love Hotel begins to work its matchmaking magic, Stella can't deny that the sparks still sizzle between them. And maybe, the experts were right after all...

My Opinion

I am going to start by saying that this is not my usual read but the cover really appealed to me. This was actually quite a fun book to read. Max and Stella were both great characters and I really enjoyed the way that the pair grew throughout the book. Whilst I didn’t love the idea of the Love Hotel, I did enjoy the way that Olivia wrote this second chance romance.

Olivia Springs’s books are just like her name: bright, refreshing, warm and sparkling. Readers can enjoy these sensations in her vibrant new book, The One That Got Away. After some changes in her life, graphic artist Stella has moved back home with her mother and spends most of her time helping with her mother’s lingerie business. Stella has little time for socialization and even less time to find a significant other. Watching her daughter all but wither away, Stella’s mother signs her up for a stint at a “Love Hotel” where she is guaranteed to find her perfect match. After much prodding, Stella arrives at the hotel only to find that her perfect match is Max, the boy who broke her heart years ago! Seeing Max again is bittersweet, when they parted, he was young and seemingly easily led, now he is all man…gorgeous, handsome man! Like Stella, Max has been coerced into attending by his best friend. But unlike Stella, he views their unexpected meeting as an opportunity to explain his actions in the past. Will Max be able to justify why he pushed her away all those years ago and make peace for once and for all? Ms. Spring uses the tropes of enemies to lovers, forced proximity and second chance love to move the narrative. I enjoyed all aspects of this book, Stella and Max made a stellar couple (pun intended). In addition, I always like it when I read a book and the author gives me a hint that I will see this couple again, perhaps as a part of Jasmine and Alejandro’s story!?

Stella has been on a string of bad dates and is in a rut helping her mom run her business after having her heart broken by Max ten years ago.

So when max’s buddy signs him up and Stella’s mom signs her up to the “ Love Island Hotel” the last thing either expect is to be paired with each other.

First looks can be deceiving. After much convincing, Stella arrives at the Love Island Hotel and almost instantly sees a man who is a 10 out of 10, tall, broad shouldered, a swim goddess. This may turn out to be not so bad after all. If her date looks anything like the guy she just saw accompanied with the drop dead scenery, how bad can these two weeks be?

Little does she know it is none other than Max. The one and only dreadful, bast*ard of an ex who broke her heart years ago. First impressions, or rather second first impressions are not good when Max shows up late on the first dinner date.

Neither of these two want to be paired together and both want to leave. After being told to stay one week and try it out, the sexual chemistry is strong. Can these two come together for a happy ever after? Does the Love Hotel really find your “Perfect match?”

Through spicy scenes, cute emotions and funny moments, Olivia Spring brings a romantic comedy of exes to lovers.
